Daniel trujillo that’s the point. That’s literally half of the process to get a steam engine to start besides water. It’s called a firebox because it’s supposed to be where the coal is burned.
Yeah same here I just don't understand why they put a hydraulic arm on a locomotive. I know that in the scrap handling industry many claws are used with special ones for shearing, crushing, and sorting. I just have never imagined one on an engine. If someone knows why they made this design choice and if it's based off of a real life thing, please fill me in!
I always loved the actual trains and the imagination they created. Once it went to all CG it became both unrealistic and too literal at the same time. The CG took the magic and imagination away. There was one I saw that still had the real trains but with CG faces and that wasn't too bad. Also, nobody beat Ringo as a narrator. Thanks for the informative history, I always wondered what happened.
Talking about Season 12 of the show, the season that featured both a mix of animated faces and models from the eighth season, yeah, I remember watching that season on my grandparents' living room TV and on several Season 12 DVDs and no VHS tapes were found for that season as the DVDs featured a lower tone version of the opening, Roll Call, and closing to the show, besides that, the first season inspired me to make my own series called "Thomas Trackmaster Revolutions and Classic Adventures," a series of remade stories from every season of Thomas & Friends, from Season 1 all the way to Season 24
Pretty much after Hero of the Rails and until Andrew Brenner took over, The Show stopped existing. Now Thomas is starting to die once again because of Big World Big adventure

Britt Allcroft just passed away recently. If I told her anything, it would be “Thank you so much for all the memories.” This documentary really hits hard now.
Michael Brandon who narrated the last live-action episodes of Thomas and Friends was a great describer. Since Alec Baldwin did a handsome English and Australian accent for Oliver the Great Western Engine and Stepney the Bluebell Engine, the late George Carlin and Michael Brandon did a wonderful Dutch and Scottish accent for Duncan the Golden Beige Narrow-Gauge Engine and Donald and Douglas the Scottish Twin Engines.
Man, it's so weird to see how the Thomas sections in the Shining Time Station really stuck with me. George Carlin told a great story without "baby talking" the plot. The modeling and special effects inspired me to start the modeling hobby as a kid, but never had the luxury of doing it or knowing how. I return again to it in the form of Warhammer, terrain building, and 3D printing... and it feels almost like it did when I watching the show as kid. But I wondered why I remember Thomas being something I held dear, but never knew the origin or what became of it when Shining Time Station was taken off PBS. Thank you for making this video!
Very nicely done. I grew up loving the classic Thomas The Tank Engine show, and it still holds a special place in my heart. Even The Magic Railroad is special to me because I loved it so much as a kid, even if it does have problems. This documentary was cool because it had some information that I didn't even know about, and now I'm interested in learning more. I haven't really watched the show that much the last few years because of the things you discussed, but if the show has been improving somewhat, maybe I'll have to take another look at it.
7:08 Finally that familiar song that summed up why I have a love of trains from my childhood.

This video brought back so many good memories for me when i was 5 i broke my leg on a trampoline and couldn’t walk or do much because of the full leg cast so my mother went to the attic and pulled out my older brother’s thomas and friends vhs tapes dvds and toys which i still keep close to my heart to this day thomas was my first friend as a child and i still love him to this day as a full grown adult
I still have it on VIDEO TAPE! and I don't own a VCR player anymore! either way i would agree eternally with you, I used to love The Magic Railroad and has always been my favorite in the series of films made. (but to be honest, the films from the CGI era were all just bad and when it came I hated it.)
I watched Thomas and the magic railroad so much even when the case was slightly broken got stuck in a DVD player scratched a few times I still watched it.
For me personally the classic era (seasons 1-7) will always be the best in my book and while I still enjoy Thomas and the RWS books for nostalgic reasons, I'm not involved with the fandom community because the majority of them are either immature or just down right anti-social. The problem is they take it far too seriously there's a lot more to steam and railways than just a children show such as the documentaries by legendary steeplejack and steam enthusiast Fred Dibnah, never keep your eggs in one basket as the old saying goes.
When I was 11 years old,I can back to the Thomas fandom because I found my old toys in a box, this video was the first one I watched when I came back to the fandom,I can’t tell how much this video impacted my own style when writing my own fan stories,I genuinely feel thankful that I was reintroduced to the fandom with this video,So Thank you😊
I for one *loved* the movie It was one of the first movies I had ever seen in theaters as a child I'm surprised to hear it's so disliked Fantastic documentary btw!
i see why it's not well liked but i don't care. that movie was a big part of my childhood. i had a blast watching it and even years later i still get a big kick out of it

Technically Season 22 is kinda decent :/ People these days are so quick to judge and make fun, the episodes weren't even out yet. I'd rather you watch "An Engine of Many Colors".
Season 1-4: Awdry Era (they used RWS stories) Season 5-7: Britt Allcroft Era Season 8-16: HIT Era (First Dark Era) Seasons 17-20: Renaissance Era Season 21: Okay, good episodes Season 22: Okay, kind of hit and miss
I always felt Thomas was best during the model era and I still look back onto them fondly as I watched them a lot when I was a kid Very nice documentary mate :)
I mostly love the part where you talked about Wilbert Awdry and his books, I think it's nice that Wilbert created the talking engines to cheer up his son while he was ill with measles, he was a very good father and Christian.
Excellent documentary. Excellent. It just popped up as a suggestion and because Thomas & Friends was a huge part of my childhood, I immediately clicked. I shall be showing this to the next generation of Thomas lovers in our family....my little nephews. It’ll be great for them to see where it all started. Thank you
Very very well done mate, extremely happy to see someone like you do something like this. I think almost every should across the world understands what it’s like to feel loved for who you are because of Thomas so thank you so so much, very proud.
I really like Journey Beyond Sodor! In my opinion, the plot is new and action-packed, the songs are amazing, and the new characters are there for a reason! Frankie and Hurricane are some of the co-protagonists and the experimental engines help Thomas save James from The Steelworks. In my opinion, it is the BEST Thomas and Friends movie!
Despite people saying it was the worst thing since mold on slice bread. But I agree with you, it does show action! That’s what people want; ACTION! It’ll be pretty boring if there’s no drama and action.
I remember watching this back around late 2019 and not to long after I remember getting back into Thomas thanks to this. All I wanted to say was thank you man :) happy 2023.
Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends will always be a part of my childhood Forever and honestly once in a blue-moon I watch an episode to bring back all of the memories of the smiles and laughs that I had and still have today. R.I.P Rev. W. Awdry & George Carlin.
When I was 4 years old in London in the 1960s, I had almost all of the small hand size Thomas The Tank Engine books with the great artwork by Reginald Payn. Although I could not yet read, I would spend hours and hours looking at the beautiful pictures. God Bless the Reverand W. Awdry for creating this iconic method of moral storytelling! The model Train version was of course after my time, but i would have loved it! The CGI Sucks!
So your a boomer that agrees that the cgi is bad? When I first came across this comment literally just now I thought: I like this one Also it seems like you had a good child hood where times were simpler.
I absolutely loved and still feel fond of Thomas and the Magic Railroad. There's something special about Lady, I really love her design and I still find it sad she's not been used more.
all enngines go you mean? yeah,, seems like britt alcroft needed a legacy for when she dies, because she's 79 years old now, but now she created something that in a short matter of time had a video on youtube that was called "50 Things Wrong with All Engines Go", and the hate for all engines go is crazy, she's ruined my favourite childhood show, and lots of other people's favourite show too.
The old series of Thomas and friends really has a special spot in my heart. It’s just a great era of the franchise and it feels so good even at my older age right now just to watch an older episode because of the beauty in the story’s told and just how great they tell them
I grew up on Thomas the tank engine mostly the older ones. The shining time movie wasn’t that bad I loved, and still do the show was so relaxing to watch and usually very peaceful. also it had great music.
In my opinion, everything past 2005 kimda sucked. I liked the old Thomas with the models. HIT entertainment has ruined a lodt of shows I like to watched. Bob the builder no longer has his football, but instead has a more realistic shaped head. What the hell HIT
i have tons of dvd of episodes of thomas put together to be the length of a movie, more or less, and, with some of them, there were activties in the episodes, like connect the dots to make an engine, help the engine find where their supposed to go, and, with other ones, there were activites with the main menu, that you could pick to do, or there were pick an episode selection thing, and, i think as well as with some of my thomas movies, there'd be these info option things that you could select, there'd be info option things that you could select that would tell you info about characters like toby, thomas, percy, gordon, henry, mavis, spencer, bulstrode, etc. and it was just so fun, the classic thomas was the true thomas, and it was just beautiful ❤❣😍❤❣❤
This is wonderful, I'm thirty years old but it brings back the best memories, being brought on a steam engine by my dad and read to from the ladybird books. I still know the signature tunes from the original 2 series. It's a lovely story of how the Reverend wrote stories for his son, the illustrations and books are something I'd love to own. Of course for young children, but thomas's voice became shockingly babyish. They had certainly dealt with previous stories and plots twenty seasons earlier.
The old series was the best. I don't like the CGI but I like the fact that they have made it more appealing for today's children. I do think they are running out of ideas.
It's so nice of you, cuz you appreciate it so well..the others just see it as a silly kids show..but they didn't know how the work, history and the passion of this pure childhood..TYSM..😘💕😍 *ALSO HIS FIREBOX WAS ON FIRE* jk
The crashing sequence in most of the show's episodes just like the books really did carry on for lesson learning on the characters so they would learn better at a future momentum but we don't like it when the trains crash; it's too dangerous. That's also why I want the show redone without the characters crashing, having an accident or featuring drivers and firemen.
When I heard the ending, Rev. W. Awdry, that was so beautiful it made me cry, You will always be remembered in my heart, for starting some show about trains crashing, learning, you’ve made something wonderful, it’s sad the models went to waste and they no longer to models, you will be a remembered author in my heart, Rev, thank you for letting me love trains.
It’s so great this video came out pre-2018. Then the show proved that the Sharon Miller era was not the worst, not by a long shot. Then AEG broke that record for worst era and then some. The show is dead in the eyes of fans, which is why the fans have gone nuts since then, popping out GOOD, REALISTIC, CHARACTER DRIVEN stories and projects
Thomas & Friends will always be apart of my childhood. I'm 17 now, and I still watch an episode once in a blue moon, just for memories sake. I liked the models, the CGI version of Thomas and friends wasn't that bad, in my opinion. Thomas will always be a part of my childhood and in my heart cause "His stories are worth telling and worth remembering." Well said, man. Well said. 👏 R.I.P REV. W AWDRY, George Carlin, and everyone else who worked on this masterpiece.✌
This show was my favorite. And still remains my favorite children's show of all time. Growing up my grandparents read the books to myself and my sister. We would binge the VHS tapes and play with the wooden railway line of toys for hours. The shows light hearted nature was a very comforting thing as a child. Though I digress. The more darker themed episodes gave this show a whole new meaning. It was never too scary for children. It isn't all rainbows and butterflies. New generations are being taught that loss and sadness isn't a thing. Cartoons and animated shows now a days are focused on the money. Not the viewers enjoyment and what rhey can take away from the show. Today its almost as if any emotion that isn't happiness is something to be left alone. Im rambling now but this documentary was stellar and definately a must watch for Thomas fans young and old.
I watched thomas since i was 2, i stopped watching it when i watched stepney gets lost, it creeped me out so much i was like " I HATE THOMAS" but when I was 9 i started watching thomas again and when i was 11 i discovered the YT Channel "James is Here"
Thomas and Friends was made with passion. And this documentary was made with passion too. Both ending in great success and well made! Good job on this documentary!
The show was never that realistic on railway practice since the 5th season. Heck there was bouncing was in MRR when Gordon shuddered at the fear of Diesel 10 and no one went up in arms because of that.
It was still movement though to express emotion, like what the CGI series is doing now because kids actually like it and even if they were years apart it is still movement.
It's 1990, a 5yo kid refusing to take his afternoon nap, rushes to the TV to quickly turn on PBS. Many shows at this time piqued his interest (Sesame Street, Mr. Rodgers, and Reading Rainbow to name a few). However, one show would then, and forever, remain the crown jewel of his youth, Shining Time Station!
Gotta admit, Donald & Douglas’ theme is a tune I hum to myself when I’m pushing busses around when they breakdown or when they need a push around the yard when they can’t start (something I like to refer to as ‘shunting’)
this video kept coming up in my recommended so i decided to watch it and i'm glad i did. this was amazing is looks and feels as if you spent a lot of time working on this. i want to thank you for so much information and can't wait to see what comes next for you on youtube.
Ever since I was born I loved Thomas and friends. To this day I still like Thomas but don’t remember most of it. After I watch this it made feel emotional 😭 I Actually like the Magic Railway
My first time being introduced to Thomas was the episode Edward's Day Out. Sometimes I look back on the early days of Thomas and feel amazed at how his stories was told.
Watching this documentary makes me really glad I had a good childhood rented the original UK and US VHS’s at Blockbuster non stop when I was a kid and my mom ordered one of the original books of Thomas the Train books all the way from the UK. Well looks like I’m gonna have to rewatch the series again I just turned 21 a month ago and watching this makes me feel like a kid again
Tatarawr 8 years old? I was still watching it till I think 10 or 11 I slowed down on watching it at that time but I’m guessing you were pretty upset that your mom got rid of em or I mean I’m sure there were other reasons for it
When I was little, I always believed the island of Sodor was real and you could go there if you got to the isle of man.

I told my parents I wanted to go there and then a few years later realism crushed my dreams
Same!
It was based on real places, but exaggerated for the series
I did too I thought it was real
The end touched my heart alot because I've been through alot, and this little blue tank engine has gotten me through ups and downs

I think a lot of people really don’t appreciate how beautiful this video is.
NathanielRoarkProductions I feel the same way 4 every last word u said =).
Same because I’m a teen that loved Thomas back in 2005

This video brought back so many good memories for me when i was 5 i broke my leg on a trampoline and couldn’t walk or do much because of the full leg cast so my mother went to the attic and pulled out my older brother’s thomas and friends vhs tapes dvds and toys which i still keep close to my heart to this day thomas was my first friend as a child and i still love him to this day as a full grown adult
To be honest as a child I absolutely loved the magic railroad and I’m from the UK and didn’t find it confusing as a four year old!
charlietrumpet96 the only thing for me was that talking to a fake bird is creepy.
I loved it as well!
Im pretty sure we got that thing aswell stuffed somewhere in our storage
Seasons 8-11 (2004-2007) of "Thomas & Friends" were the episodes that I grew up watching.
Andrew Ortiz I grew up with the Miller era :P
I grew up with Thomas from 1984-2007. Loved that show and I still do.
ii grew up with the original few seasons on VHS
Me too, I loved that era
For me personally the classic era (seasons 1-7) will always be the best in my book and while I still enjoy Thomas and the RWS books for nostalgic reasons, I'm not involved with the fandom community because the majority of them are either immature or just down right anti-social. The problem is they take it far too seriously there's a lot more to steam and railways than just a children show such as the documentaries by legendary steeplejack and steam enthusiast Fred Dibnah, never keep your eggs in one basket as the old saying goes.
When I was 11 years old,I can back to the Thomas fandom because I found my old toys in a box, this video was the first one I watched when I came back to the fandom,I can’t tell how much this video impacted my own style when writing my own fan stories,I genuinely feel thankful that I was reintroduced to the fandom with this video,So Thank you😊
I for one *loved* the movie
It was one of the first movies I had ever seen in theaters as a child
I'm surprised to hear it's so disliked
Fantastic documentary btw!
People talk shit about magic railroad

Season 17-20: Renaissance Era
Season 21-24: Post Renaissance Era
Season 25-27: All Engines Go Era (Second Dark Age)
Technically Season 22 is kinda decent :/ People these days are so quick to judge and make fun, the episodes weren't even out yet. I'd rather you watch "An Engine of Many Colors".
Season 1-4: Awdry Era (they used RWS stories)
Season 5-7: Britt Allcroft Era
Season 8-16: HIT Era (First Dark Era)
Seasons 17-20: Renaissance Era
Season 21: Okay, good episodes
Season 22: Okay, kind of hit and miss

Better? Yes, it's better, but Season 22 isn't THAT bad.
I always felt Thomas was best during the model era and I still look back onto them fondly as I watched them a lot when I was a kid
Very nice documentary mate :)
Seasons 1-9 will always be the best!!

Don't forget Ringo Starr and Michael Angelis!
When I first came across this comment literally just now I thought:
I like this one
Also it seems like you had a good child hood where times were simpler.

There's something special about Lady, I really love her design and I still find it sad she's not been used more.
I love Lady and Stanley. Lady is so colorful and so awesome!!
It’s so underrated! It’s my fav movie!
It’s beautiful how fans are keeping the series alive
Whilst Mattel is making a terrible reboot
all enngines go you mean? yeah,, seems like britt alcroft needed a legacy for when she dies, because she's 79 years old now, but now she created something that in a short matter of time had a video on youtube that was called "50 Things Wrong with All Engines Go", and the hate for all engines go is crazy, she's ruined my favourite childhood show, and lots of other people's favourite show too.
Heres Johnny
Its great to see that u appreciate it unlike others seeing it as a kids show.
In my opinion, everything past 2005 kimda sucked. I liked the old Thomas with the models. HIT entertainment has ruined a lodt of shows I like to watched. Bob the builder no longer has his football, but instead has a more realistic shaped head. What the hell HIT
Mattel's to blame for Bob.

It's not HIT entertainment but SHIT entertainment!!
The future hit my childhood hard (;U;)
I also agree with what u say

FREAKING THE MODELS ARE SO MUCH BETTER
funtime graham my childhood Thomas not cgi crap
To be honest I Like the Book Ilustrations more than the CGI and Model
100% agree that model of Thomas and friends seasons were better
No I miss the old ones
When I was younger, my parents bought a DVD of Thomas and the magic railroad. I used to love it.
same
same, really a shame I learned the flops of the movie
i have tons of dvd of episodes of thomas put together to be the length of a movie, more or less, and, with some of them, there were activties in the episodes, like connect the dots to make an engine, help the engine find where their supposed to go, and, with other ones, there were activites with the main menu, that you could pick to do, or there were pick an episode selection thing, and, i think as well as with some of my thomas movies, there'd be these info option things that you could select, there'd be info option things that you could select that would tell you info about characters like toby, thomas, percy, gordon, henry, mavis, spencer, bulstrode, etc. and it was just so fun, the classic thomas was the true thomas, and it was just beautiful ❤❣😍❤❣❤
Beautiful video, genuinely cried at the end. Wilbert Audrey impacted my childhood more than he could imagine. I loved this series when I was a kid ❤️
Great funny and emotional
This is one of the best thing I've seen
From drawings to CGI what you had done is amazing my friend
Edward and James production Agreed
This video was bueatyful
This is wonderful, I'm thirty years old but it brings back the best memories, being brought on a steam engine by my dad and read to from the ladybird books. I still know the signature tunes from the original 2 series. It's a lovely story of how the Reverend wrote stories for his son, the illustrations and books are something I'd love to own. Of course for young children, but thomas's voice became shockingly babyish. They had certainly dealt with previous stories and plots twenty seasons earlier.
"It's definitely back on the right track."
[Rimshot]
The old series was the best. I don't like the CGI but I like the fact that they have made it more appealing for today's children. I do think they are running out of ideas.
Like when they put a ROBOT IN THE SERIES SET IN THE 50s/60s
I prefer the model series for the stories, even though CG has better graphics. Everything was just morals with that.
Shut up. I think they are both better!
Kris John Mendoza What is your problem?
@@jaydabomb2510 my problem?! Just read man. I have no problems. I just think they are both good. Toy version and animation version.
It's so nice of you, cuz you appreciate it so well..the others just see it as a silly kids show..but they didn't know how the work, history and the passion of this pure childhood..TYSM..😘💕😍
*ALSO HIS FIREBOX WAS ON FIRE* jk
uh the emojis are offputting
The crashing sequence in most of the show's episodes just like the books really did carry on for lesson learning on the characters so they would learn better at a future momentum but we don't like it when the trains crash; it's too dangerous. That's also why I want the show redone without the characters crashing, having an accident or featuring drivers and firemen.
I used to love this series when I was a little kid , But I always wondered the backstory behind it. This feels like closure to me
I was 5 when Thomas and the magic railroad came out. Honestly I don’t even know how many times I watched it. I loved it.
"All it took was a little effort"
Sharon Miller: What's Effort?
This show has make me joyfull and hopefull.this show will remain in my heart forever
Thomas and Friends were FIRE .🔥 So much better than CGI and mostly everything else.
True, Remember this franchise is 80 years old and also debuted during World War II when Britian was being bombed and America was at war as well
When I heard the ending, Rev.
Same!!
I wrought this with my plea for quality
To be fair to the Miller era movies, HOTR is a good movie and especially BMM, which is on the same level as SLOTLT
What about TGD
@@2SINISTER57 ok that too
that ending, that will hit you right in the gut. Especially with the choice of music
Anybody think a movie about the rev. W awdry and the creation of the railway series? Im surprised it hasn't been done
Brenner might take it into consideration if he sees this
You predicted the mister Rodgers movie
A film with a retelling of the original stories in-between. Either live action with real steam locos or models. That would be amazing!

Thomas & Friends will always be apart of my childhood. I'm 17 now, and I still watch an episode once in a blue moon, just for memories sake. Nice work, man. Y'know, I've been attached to Thomas the Tank Engine since I was 2 years old now I'm 18 and I still love him.
16 years here and I can't get the theme song out of my head!
Me too, mate. Me too.
Cartoons still feature sadness and tragedy.
I actually cried. I remember watching Thomas when I was sick for the first time in my life.
“Tank Engine Thomas Again”
We’re really working overtime on these titles.
Now we're in the Chuggington era of bouncing engines, Tumblr the Tank Engine, unrealistic situations, and no character development.
Cardboard Silver yes I do not like how they did that to Thomas
Don't worry they are giving life back to Thomas and now I believe it's alit better off.....at least its not the older CGI series right?
@@robertspringen1524 the Miller era...*shudders*
