You've obviously done your research and I applaud you for it hahaha I highly recommend you take a gander at Brian Sibley's biography for the Reverend. He explains in there Percy is based off the model Awdry made without any basis kit or engine class in mind
@@WaltsNephew Explains why Percy's such a kitbash in design. Also thanks! I'd like to think two decades worth of following the series, and decade of learning about its development and real British locos in general helped a lot in that regard
Exactly; not only by amateur film makers or home footage but also from official sources such as the BBC documenting the railways during the very first years of preservation
I find it odd how through his entire life,Gordon never got a corridor tender like the flying scotsman,it just struck me as odd because at some point in Gordon's life he would have to get a3 modifications at Doncaster which included a corridor tender,i Maybe awdry didnt want to for design purposes.
Interesting idea! I think since Gordon belongs to the NWR and Scotsman is LNER (eventually BR and private ownership) they would be subjected to different protocol. Furthermore, since Gordon's express is a stopping train that does not last all day, he wound't need more than one footplate crew
Well, I think the in-universe reason is the fact Gordon never got a Doncaster rebuild. He was rebuilt by Crewe instead, so would've gotten a 6-wheel tender anyway. Don't particularly like a Fowler tender on him, but a Fowler tender makes _slightly_ more sense for the size of Sodor's mainline compared to a LNER 8-wheeler. It's pretty likely Gordon would've arrived on Sodor with a GNR-style 8-wheel tender (with the coal rails) but we never saw that in the books. There's a theory (could be a canon explanation but I'm not sure) that the reason certain engine's are drawn so differently in the early books compared to their basis is because the illustrators were going off how the engines would've looked when the books were _published_, not when they took place. Gordon doesn't look like a "proper" A1 not just because he's the prototype, but because the illustrator would've been using Gordon's rebuilt form as a reference! It's the same reason Edward looks a bit bigger than a real Furness K2, because he would've been rebuilt at least once by the mid-40's, or why Henry's old shape is so inconsistent because they only had descriptions to use Sorry if I overexplained, I just find it interesting how little inconsistencies work into the lore of the series
Exactly! Since this is focusing on Awdry's RWS in book form, I had to include 4-4-2 Henry since the early illustrations depicted him that way (at least from Awdry's perspective as you said haha)
@@WaltsNephew I can see a bit of that but seeing that I’m a kid born in 05 who grew up watching older Disney movies (Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, and jungle book, etc) I hear curella’s theme
You're very right! My initial intention was to include each individual's leitmotif but since their screen time was so short, I figured I would have the Skarloey Rwy. theme throughout for all the engines
A few problems here: These aren’t railway series characters in real life, they are their basis Edward was and always has been a furness railway k2, of which not much imagery exists Due to the various screw ups throughout illustration, Henry was never portrayed as a 4-4-2 and was always a strange A1 missing the rear trailing wheels or a black 5 following his rebuild
Right, they are the basis. But, if you've ever taken a marketing class, you have to use more congenial language that is adaptive to a broader audience where the subject is more clearly recognized based on the simple title. As you noted, there is very little in the way of images for a Large Seagull from the FR so I substituted the other partial basis engines for both the Railway Series and the Reverend's model. In terms of Henry, he was always intended to be an Atlantic to make it remarkably easy for Christopher to differentiate between the three railway engines easily and it is for that reason the Ivatt Atlantic is featured here
@@FlyingFoxProductions8995 In the first published version of the book the illustrator made the mistake of having Henry be a Pacific just like Gordon, yes. But in Awdry's sketches for Christopher and the illustrator he portrayed Henry as an Atlantic to help differentiate Henry and Gordon visually

Walt's Nephew this video is totally amazing, I didn't know that you would dedicate the memorable characters from The Railway Series and of course Thomas and Friends, by showing their real life counterpart locomotives. I think you really did a good job on this video, however I spotted one mistake. The tram engine that you featured on this video, are sort of the wrong steam trams. Because those were not the same trams that Toby was based off. I forgot the name of the steam tram of what Toby is based off, but the kind of steam tram that Toby is based off. Is a wooden type of steam tram. Like the first original interurban red cars of the Pacific electric, because if you can remember those trolley cars. They look like trolley cars made by pullman, which I believe they were made by Pullman. But anyway those old cars were made entirely out of wood. And so the steam trams from England, one of their first original steam trams that they made we're made entirely out of wood. And they had like four windows, two windows on the right side of the steam tram and two windows on the left side of tram locomotive. And of course they had cow catchers on both the front and the back of those locomotives, and of course they even had side plates covering the wheels. I wish you could have found old video footage of those old wooden British steam trams, the ones that Toby it's based off. Even though you kind of made a mistake from there, because this video didn't show the real life counterparts of what Toby is based off. I still say you did a great job on this video, dedicating the characters from Thomas and Friends and The Railway Series, and showing of what the characters are based off
I tried so hard to find the J70's of the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway but, remarkably, nobody filmed them! So instead of showing just a photograph I found a steam tram from a nearby village of Wigan and a better alternative
@@WaltsNephew yeah that's okay. But there was a question that I asked you on one of my comments from me for, and I haven't got an answer yet. Are you a huge fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, along with all of his friends and the others from the island of sodor ?
I actually did respond with an answer but I will reiterate; yes I enjoy Thomas and Rev. Awdry's "Railway Series." I enjoy some of the television series (roughly the first 4 seasons) and from then onward my enjoyment decreases
@@WaltsNephew well that sounds cool to hear. And just to let you know I enjoy the classic Thomas show as well, mainly from season 1 to season 7. I enjoy the show, from the Britt Allcroft era. I even enjoyed the CGI show, from season 13 to season 20 or 21, I forgot I have to look it up again. Because I'm sure it was season 22, when Mattel started to make it into Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures, which is the CGI show that I dislike the most. So the classic era of the CGI show from season 13 to season 21 or 20 are the only ones of the CGI show that I like. And just to let you know I have the original 26 Railway series books, written by the original author the Rev W Awdry. I even have the first Thomas the Tank Engine complete collection book, that contains all 26 really series books in one big book. Also by the original author. So 26 + 1, which is the Thomas the Tank Engine complete collection. Would make it 27 books of my collection by the original author himself. Just to let you know I even have three other railway series books, written by the author's son Christopher Awdry. I'm hoping to collect the other books written by him, the other railway series books that is by him. And his new Thomas the Tank Engine complete collection book, which contains all of his Railway series books all in one big book
Yes indeed! I think the Railway Series does an excellent job at exposing the world to a wide variety of engineering feats with the several different designs for steam engines (and some diesels hahaha)
What's Nephew just to let you know, my mom would always tell me that it was Thomas and Friends that got me into trains. Which was true in a way, but what really got me into trains at the same time since I was a kid, when I visited the Southern California Railway Museum and when I visited Disneyland and saw the trains from there. It was really Disneyland, the Southern California Railway Museum and Thomas and Friends that got me into trains. And even VHS video cassettes about trains that got me into trains as well, and just to let you know I still have some of those train VHS cassettes. One of them that I have dedicates the Santa Fe Railroad, the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific. I even have another one called there goes a train starring Dave Hood. But for all my life I've been a huge fan of Thomas the Tank Engine and all of his friends from the island of sodor, I've also been a big fan of the American spin-off TV show that introduced Thomas to North America which was known as Shining Time Station. So I'm not sure, are you also a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine. and are you also a fan and do you remember Shining Time Station as well ?
I never know Thomas was a television program until a few years ago, I only knew the Tank Engine through DVD releases; I enjoy Rev. Awdry's series and enjoy the first three to four seasons of the television series but I think it has taken a turn for the worst due to corporate greed, lack of original thought and adhering to railway regulation
@@WaltsNephew yeah you're right, I'm sure you heard about the new 2D Thomas show that will be coming out soon. When I saw the trailer for it, oh my God I thought it was really terrible. He kind of reminded me of the wacky sensation, and more cartoony type style like the old Mickey Mouse cartoons when they were in black and white and transferred into color. Those cartoons from the late 1920s, the 1930s and 40s. If you don't know the company of Mattel now owns the rights to Thomas, and they are taking the show way out of hand. And they really making the show to be like almost like the old Mickey Mouse cartoon, but all in all they're trying to compete with other wacky TV shows out there such as SpongeBob. They don't realize how great the show was, when it sticked to more of Railway realism or Railway practice as the Rev W Awdry had described it. Or Railway regulation as you said to me. I hope Mattel will realize that the show will fail, and that nobody will watch the new 2D Thomas Show. At first they made it worse by doing the previous Thomas series which was known as Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures, along with the animated movie as well. They added too many crazy Cooks for both the movie and the show, whenever they would talk they would move their bodies, which I thought was really unnecessary and uncalled for. They introduced the two new characters Nia and Rebecca in a very odd way, they were always making fun of Sir Topham Hatt giving him lots of trouble and so forth which I thought was unnecessary and really uncalled for. And above all, they had to do very unnecessary and uncalled for daydream sequences, which I thought we're really a nightmare to watch, really unnecessary and really uncalled for. So anyway the previous Thomas CGI series Thomas and Friends Big World Big Adventures and even the movie we're really something that myself and the other Thomas fans didn't expect, and Mattel definitely ruined the show at first from there. So if they failed with that show previously, I hope they'll realize that the 2D show will fail as well. Because I really predict that the new 2D animated Thomas Show will fail completely
I never knew footage of this even existed. Despite the fact all the E2s were scrapped i believe they managed 2 rebuild a replica of Thomas 4 the Thomas and the U.K trip event.
Thank you! Usually when I look for a compilation of Awdry's engines, most people just show photographs. So I took the liberty of garnering footage together of the engines
I thought it would be wrong not to have the engine motifs from the television series. Initially I was just gonna have the engine sounds, but that seemed a bit dull for the situation, so I had the music and some of the whistles overlaid and I enjoy the result
Thomas was originally an e2 with wheel arches with his chassy set lower then his siblings, and different brakes he somehow make it to sodor during World War one, got his boiler replaced for a better one, he got his smoke box straightened, and his bunker Atwell, at some point he crashed into the station masters house and got his running board straightened.
My initial thought was to have a cutout image of a J70 moving across a background, but I figured a genuine steam tram in motion would be the only good thing. So I had to improvise with footage of a metropolitan steam tram from Wigan c.1900
I love this video, but one gripe. When it shows Toby, you used the Kensington Steam Trams, aka, Flora’s basis. Did you mean to do this? Or could you not find any j70 videos?
Correct, there appears to be no footage available of a J70 in motion so I had to make due with a metropolitan tram from Wigan. What's funny is that shortly after making and publishing this compilation I found footage of a LNER Y6/GER G15, an 0-4-0 cousin of Toby's basis. If I had found that bit of footage sooner, it would've been used here haha
LBSCR E2 Class is the Same Size to GWR 1340 Trojan LYR Class 28 is the Same Size to Furness Railway K2 Class GNR A1 Class Pacific is the Same Size to LMS Stanier Class 5
Honestly in The railway series I think Thomas is a mix of an E4 and an E2 tank engine he has the boiler dome and funnel of an e2 as well as the coal bunker but is given a more flat running board and less detail much like an E4
I understand that the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway historical society is in the process of raising funds to construct an 0-4-0 tram engine to operate in the future

Unfortunately I couldn't find any footage of a J70! So I made do with footage of a metropolitan steam tram in Wigan (which is better than looking at a still photograph if you ask me hahaha)
It's a very good point you bring up here. It does seem a bit arbitrary that I would include engines from the Arlesdale or Culdee Fell railways and not include those other engines as you mentioned. With the exception Bear, I wanted to include only the characters Rev. Awdry included in his books that were mainstay characters (hence the lack of City of Truro, Flying Scotsman not associated to Gordon), Captain Baxter, and others. But I do have another Thomas-related compilation in the works!
Believe me, I tried SO hard to find a J70 in action but, remarkably, nobody bothered to film them in action. My initial plan was to crop a J70 and move it across a background of the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway but then I found these steam trams near Wigan and figured that this would be better than a stagnant photograph
Because of budget at the time, Smudger utilized Rheneas' model simply painted green (you can see the red livery underneath and in the corners of the model). In the Railway Series, he's more of a WWI American-built trench locomotive that worked in France
Seeing this footage accompanied by Mike and Junior’s music really shows how well they were able to capture and personify each engine’s personality. Gordon feels really grand, Percy feels very squat and cheeky, etc.

@@WaltsNephew Explains why Percy's such a kitbash in design. Also thanks! I'd like to think two decades worth of following the series, and decade of learning about its development and real British locos in general helped a lot in that regard
Wow, so well informed! Thank you for your thorough insight.
Kind of ironic, because Thomas's physical shape in the illustrations is closer to a Jinty than an E2, if you look at the front proportions.
11:57. At first, I thought it was just the Breinz Rorthorn Bahn railway. But I later found out that it was the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
Yes indeed! The bizarre little cog railway of Wales
The skarloey railway ones are easy because there are tons upon tons of footage on a certain Narrow Gauge Railway in Wales Stepney as well
Exactly; not only by amateur film makers or home footage but also from official sources such as the BBC documenting the railways during the very first years of preservation
The Tallyllyn Railway In Wales, Yes I've Heard of that
I find it odd how through his entire life,Gordon never got a corridor tender like the flying scotsman,it just struck me as odd because at some point in Gordon's life he would have to get a3 modifications at Doncaster which included a corridor tender,i
Maybe awdry didnt want to for design purposes.
It's the same reason Edward looks a bit bigger than a real Furness K2, because he would've been rebuilt at least once by the mid-40's, or why Henry's old shape is so inconsistent because they only had descriptions to use
Sorry if I overexplained, I just find it interesting how little inconsistencies work into the lore of the series
I like how it is Awdry’s Henry
Exactly why I put the Atlantics in here!
I like how you used an Atlantic for some of Henry's moments. I'm guessing that's a nod to how Awdry originally wanted him to be one?
Exactly! Since this is focusing on Awdry's RWS in book form, I had to include 4-4-2 Henry since the early illustrations depicted him that way (at least from Awdry's perspective as you said haha)
@@WaltsNephew yup
Now this is a clever mash up
Well thank you! I share the same sentiment hahaha
For anyone wondering why the D40 was used for Edward, there is no footage, at least not any that I know of, of the K2s in steam.
Yes indeed! I would LOVE to find a K2 on film, but so far my research efforts have come up empty

The start of daisy’s theme gives me cruella de vil vibes

@@WaltsNephew I can see a bit of that but seeing that I’m a kid born in 05 who grew up watching older Disney movies (Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, and jungle book, etc) I hear curella’s theme
A bit sinister with a flair egotism; I can see that

Rusty and Duncan have their own theme you know
You're very right! My initial intention was to include each individual's leitmotif but since their screen time was so short, I figured I would have the Skarloey Rwy. theme throughout for all the engines
A few problems here:
These aren’t railway series characters in real life, they are their basis
Edward was and always has been a furness railway k2, of which not much imagery exists
Due to the various screw ups throughout illustration, Henry was never portrayed as a 4-4-2 and was always a strange A1 missing the rear trailing wheels or a black 5 following his rebuild
In terms of Henry, he was always intended to be an Atlantic to make it remarkably easy for Christopher to differentiate between the three railway engines easily and it is for that reason the Ivatt Atlantic is featured here
No I think he was supposed to look like Gordon I think
@@FlyingFoxProductions8995 In the first published version of the book the illustrator made the mistake of having Henry be a Pacific just like Gordon, yes. But in Awdry's sketches for Christopher and the illustrator he portrayed Henry as an Atlantic to help differentiate Henry and Gordon visually
OMG Big nolstagia From Tv Show!
Absolutely! Although I only focused on the engines from Rev. Awdry's books hahaha
Even with design differences, different contexts, and no faces, every locomotive from this vid is without a doubt exactly like the original books

For anyone who is wondering why flora,s basis was used for Toby there is no footage of a J70 in action 😮
Thanks for sharing all the cool locomotives That was awesome video to watch. Love the old video of the 20s &. 30 s
Yes indeed! I think the Railway Series does an excellent job at exposing the world to a wide variety of engineering feats with the several different designs for steam engines (and some diesels hahaha)
Yes

Because of budget at the time, Smudger utilized Rheneas' model simply painted green (you can see the red livery underneath and in the corners of the model). In the Railway Series, he's more of a WWI American-built trench locomotive that worked in France
I also say MrMeepzMax has the same basis as rheneas cuz
