- The Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) is a small, peaceful South American fish that makes an excellent choice for planted desktop aquariums. Featuring a deep orange color, it looks striking when kept in tanks with darker substrates.
lots of information compact and clear in a short time span so that people can learn a lot about these fish quickly and easily - Perfect video
Embers are quite long lived & very hardy too, mine being over 5 years now but no longer breed.
Superb information thankyou.
I have 17 Ember Tetras.
Oak leaves also provide beneficial tannins. I just go out to the local woods and pick up a good handful of somewhat decomposed leaves and add a portion to the tank and the tetras are blissful.

Thanks and welcome! 😊
Since Fluval makes the Spec 3, may I request a Species Spotlight on the micro fish species known as _Boraras_ specifically the _brigittae_ rasbora?
With such a small tank size, finding suitable fish is near impossible. I find that the Chili Rasbora fits that role perfectly. Keeping only shrimp in the Spec 3 gets dull rather quickly.
Keep up the good work my friends.
Bert thank you, we totally agree B. brigittae is a knock out, we will eventually get to it.
I like easy to care for fish that isn't shy. What do you recommend? Ember tetra or brigittae rasbora?
Both species prefer planted tanks and given their originating environments it would be normal for them to prefer cover. That said if you keep either species in a good sized group of at least 15 to 20 in a well planted 30 to 40 gallon aquarium, you should enjoy their beauty. If you really prefer out and about fish 100% of the time then most barbs and livebearers might be a better choice for you.
Yeah I left the other video with the robot voice 🤣
Got mine a few hours ago.. around seven pieces.. add on my fire red shrimps... with tank mates.. nerites and horned ones too.. 😊😊😊😊
Very nice fish, thanks.
How about neon blue stipho goby or African butterfly? We've been getting curious customers in the pet store where I work, and I just don't know enough about these fish.
I LOVE these videos by the way! So helpful!
Awesome video
Can’t get my 10 embers to color up, any ideas? I do have a dark stratum as well as background. Lots of plants.
Try feeding them Bug Bites! The high inclusion rate of insect protein will simulate their natural feeding habits and bring out their best colors: fluvalaquatics.com/us/shop/product/bug-bites
Nice thanks
I got 12 of them in my 29 gal. after 2 month they bread and now i have 30 to 50
Karen, excellent achievement! Thanks for letting us know, if you wish to share any details about the set up you have we'd love to hear about it, include as many details as you can!
I'm very much wanting some embers in like a 20g long or 29g. I live in FL with hard water and ph about 7.8. Knowing these fish prefer softer water do you think they'll acclimate well and show good color? My first fish in my first tank, a 15g flex, were Celestichthys Choprae and those glowlight danios were beautiful when they got here to Florida from Oregon, The Wet Spot....great place to buy fish online...customer service is fantastic. But after acclimating it only took 24 hours for their colors were muted and the colors never came back. I don't want that happening with embers. Your thoughts? I can certainly add some almond leaves but I don't like manipulating ph as I think it can do more harm than good
Hi there! If your tap water is naturally harder and more alkaline, keeping species like Ember Tetras will be a challenge! We'd recommend instead opting for fish that naturally prefer those conditions. 🐟
@fluval see i totally agree with you. Another UA-cam channel said it wouldn't be a problem at all, so I'm glad I asked. I have praecox rainbows in in my 55g, but what about furcata rainbows in that 32g flex
Thank you for the informative video! What is the foreground plant in the tank?
Staurogyne repens.
Could I keep 1 betta (saying it's a calm one) with 7-9 ember tetras and a few shrimp and snails, in a 10 gallon long tank?
Depending on the betta he may bother the shrimp and will certainly predate any shrimp fry.
How well do they school together do they have clear direction?
The tend to school pretty tightly. Including a peaceful but slightly larger tank mate encourages that tendency.
Have a school of 13 they school really well and do not mess with the Amano shrimp have around 10 and all in a 13 gallon tank
Mine schooled the first day. Now they're all over the place. I have 8 in a 20g hex
Would these guys compliment the green neon tetra? Thinking the 2 of these in my 125 blackwater tank
Kevin, we certainly think so. That said, they should be kept in schools, in a 125 gallon 20 would be appropriate, given the current population allows for it.
I have an American flag fish male. Would these little fish be good tank mates?
Hi Dianna, American Flagfish prefer cooler water than Ember Tetras, so we wouldn't recommend keeping them together! They also have a tendency to be a bit more boisterous, which shy fish like Ember Tetras won't appreciate.
Thanks
Unrelated to the video, but I have a question for you. I’m getting a 150 gallon tank, and I am going to move my comet goldfish (as well as 3 or 4 eventually) into the tank. I was hoping to began a community aquarium, with maybe some mollies, but all the sources I’ve seen say not to. Would the size of the tank give them enough space to live with each other?
Comets kept in larger tanks can get close to their full size, about 12 inches in length...based on that and their habits, temperature preferences etc., mixing with tropical species would not make for the best community aquarium. Our recommendation would be a community of comets and perhaps some fancier varieties, such as Ryukins.
Fluval Aquatics thanks, I think your advice would enrich the lives of both my comets and the mollies that can be adopted by a tropical owner.
Kind of an unrelated question but I have the plant in the back of that tank, the tall one. If I trim it on the top will it grow back nicely? It’s just gotten a bit too large for my tank, thanks, I’m new to planted tanks!
Ciara, absolutely.
Like the ones in this tank mine seem to be drawn backwards so i'm concerned the pump in my 60l Fluval Spec is too powerful. Should they be drawn backwards like this?
Ours have always behaved that way! The 60L Spec is a great tank for Ember tetras.
Can I keep them with neon fish?
Lets say 20-20 each in a 160l aquarium
In a well planted 160L and starting with neons that are young, yes, we see that working well.
I'm planning on getting some of these on my 20 long but my dkh is at a 12. What's the best way to get it down and keep it stable?
Adrian, our preference is to invest in a small reverse osmosis filter, pricing has dropped dramatically over that last few years. You could dilute at 50% to achieve significantly softer water along with increased facility in dropping pH values. As for keeping softer water stable, the best way would be regular water changes and verification with the appropriate test kits.
Hard to find in Toronto :(
Try talking to a few of the better fish shops in your area of Toronto, wholesalers do import this species, it is a matter of timing and putting in requests with shops and regular follow up...keep up the search, you will find them! Keep us up to date, we see them regularly in Montreal at some of the bigger aquatic shops.
try Shrimpfever in Scarborough, they stock embers from time to time
Hi, I have seen them in Big Al's North York
Would about 10 be good with my betta fish? I have very small food that would be good, or would green neons be a better betta tank mate choice?
We would not recommend Ember Tetras with a Betta, they are really small and there is a chance the betta would bother them. If the tank is planted then you could try green neons, yes they are a better choice but the number depends on the size of your aquarium. For example, in a planted 10 gallon, yes you could try a school of 10 with a betta. Do watch and observe, especially in the beginning as some male bettas are much more aggressive than others and have a much lower tolerance for other fish, make sure to be prepared to move the male betta into isolation if necessary.
Fluval Aquatics Awesom! Thanks!! And I have a 5.5 gallon with nothing else in it exept the betta, so would it even be good to put other fish in? I am planning to deck it out with live plants soon, but I might just get some sort of shrimp
@@FishinMichigan1 don't know if you tried it already but try rasboras if you don't do the tetras. I was recommended to do the former with bettas. One of my bettas is docile, he has rasboras in his tank with him (he's in a 7.5) and he doesn't mind them. My other betta is aggressive, I tried adding him to a tank established with rasboras and tetras and he tried to kill them. Also, I tested out with 3 rasboras (because they school) and also because the tank was small.
Can I have 6 or 8 of them in a 5 gallon with one or teo shrimps. Also, I have dried banan leaves. Can I use them for staining?
Muhammad, we recommend Tropical Sea Almond Leaves (Terminalia Catappa) or aquarium peat pellets for this purpose. We have not yet tried banana leaves.
I’m looking at buying a Fluval Edge 46 litre Aquarium and I was planning on putting a Betta Fish in the tank. I’ve heard that the Ember Tetra is a good community fish that can be kept alongside a Betta as long as the tank is big enough. I just wanted you guys opinion on whether or not the Betta and Ember Tetras would get a long with each other in a tank this size? And if not, what other types of fish would be okay to keep alongside a Betta. Thanks guys.
That really depends on the male Betta spendens, if he is an aggressive specimen he may chase the tetras, Ember tetras are good community fish, comparatively most Betttas are not, in our opinion given the small size and demeanor of this tetra species it would not be an ideal tank mate for a betta.
Fluval Aquatics thanks for a speedy reply, could you recommend any tank mates for a Betta then just assuming that the Betta I get won’t be too aggressive.
We usually prefer slightly larger tetras if you are keeping them in a 5 gallon or larger aquarium, neons, glowlights, some rasboras are good too, such as Hengeli for example. Dwarf to small corydoras are great too.
Fluval Aquatics thank you Fluval, that’s given me some ideas to start up my first tank. Also whilst I have you here, what size heaters would you recommend for your Fluval Edge 42l, I’m going to guess a 50w heater but I’m new to the hobby so I’d rather have a professionals opinion.
Sam, you are most welcome. Yes, your guess is correct, a 50W Fluval M heater will work and is reliable.
I THINK THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO SEE A SPECIES SPOTLIGHT ON THE NEON TETRA AS IT IS THE MOST POPULAR TETRA!!!
Craig, apologies for our low output with species spotlight, you've been heard!
I cant keep neon tetras they seem to die.
would a small group of say maybe 5 be ok in a 5-6 gallon tank ?
Ben, yes, these are very small tetras, make sure to include some live plants.
How many tetras I can put in a 2.5 gallon?
how many in a 12 gallon with eheim 2213 filter? answer please!!
If they are the only fish you could keep a dozen, they are tiny.
7 ember tetras, 1dwarf gourami, 6 shrimp. ten gallon long. is it ok?
Muhammad, yes that sounds like a suitable population.
I'd love to see a vid listing fish that only get to about 2cm big (I think that's just under an inch).
There are a number of interesting nano species, we will be presenting more of them going forward. Yes it is just under an inch, 1 inch equals 2.54 cm.
@@fluval awesome. I tried looking up nano fish species but listed fish grew to 5cm. These guys were the only ones I found other than a pea puffer which isn't available in Australia.
There are other species, for example, one that we really enjoy is E. annulatus, commonly known as the Clown Killiefish. They usually list between 3 to 3.5cm and that would include the long filament on the males' caudal fin, females are typically about 2 cm.
@@fluval Thanks. I'll have another browse through your vids see what's what.
Can this fish live with goldfish.
Hi there, goldfish and Tetras are unfortunately not compatible tank mates. 😊
where should I buy these Ember Tetras?
While not common we do see them in more knowledgeable fish shops from time to time. We suggest discussing availability with your local fish store, the are a great nano fish and certainly a very popular choice for planted tanks.
No fish or plant video for over 3 weeks.
What's up ?
Rick, thanks for the reminder, we have been occupied with annual trade shows at this time of year....the marketing team works hard here at HQ! Thanks for the patience, coming soon, stay tuned!
Fluval Aquatics thanks I am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
How will they do with a Betta?
Chrissy, they are quite small, they might be attacked by an aggressive specimen. We would advise a slightly larger species, adult neons or cardinals in a well planted tank are usually ok.
How bout with bettas will they be ok
There are better slightly larger tetra species to try with bettas, Embers are very tiny.
I have them in my cherry shrimp tank i was told by some folk on facebook that you should not kèep them in a shrimp tank
We have them with very small shrimp in a planted aquarium of course and have not experienced any issues, do you recall the reason it was suggested not to keep them together?
Random people on the internet know everything.
I once read one bright light claiming that the MiG25 was a copy of the F18.
The MiG25 was produced first btw.
What about betta fish?
Ember tetras are quite small, there are far better choices as tank mates.
Fluval Aquatics are they smaller than tetras?
Betta splendens are quite a bit larger and they can be aggressive towards smaller species such as these.
How to see females and males, i have them in my tank but after a year still not breed, i think they are all male hahaha, even the fish seller dont know which is females or males.
The differences are very subtle! Adult males are more intensely-colored, especially when in spawning condition, while females are noticeably rounder-bodied.
Very interesting, I thought it was very interesting how you come on saying that the ember tetra should be kept at 6.0 to 6.5 with tannin stained water with dKH of like 2,.. and looking at the water conditions you have them in there I don’t see any tannin in the water and probably doubt that it’s at 6.0 pH in your aquarium. Your visual does not match what you are saying.
Charles, the tank we are housing those Embers in was set up as a planted aquascape and used for the purposes of showing the fish for the video. In regards to the "Species Spotlight" information it is optimal to keep this small tetra in tannin stained water within the pH range we mention. This is not to say it is not possible to keep them in clear water at a neutral pH but it does mean you will not observe their best coloration and they will tend to use the plants for cover somewhat more.
Fluval Aquatics ; 👍
Who disliked this video?
Competitors?
Telling me to keep them at 5.5 pH.....im gone
This not what we stated, there is an acceptable range of 5.5 to 6.5, with 6.5 being perfectly acceptable, around the 2 minute mark of this video.
😎
Green fire tetra species
The conditions for keeping these beautiful fish happy and healthy in water stained by tannins, as explained in the video, is not what there in the tank shown.
This guy has quite a few videos where he talks BS. 🥊🏴
Hi John, Ember Tetras are ideal for biotope aquariums with tannin-stained water, or in planted aquariums, as shown in the video. Tom has half a century of fishkeeping experience - he knows what he's talking about!
You look like Drew Carey. Congratulations
