Understanding the nitrogen cycle was the hardest part for me when I set up my first tank. Thanks to Cory and peanut butter M&M’s I got the hang of it and have several tanks that are doing great 😄🙂

Was for me too but it was back in the 90s and the information wasn't as easily available as it is today. Although I managed, it probably wasn't until a few years later when I truly understood it. Having access to UA-cam channels like this has truly enhanced the hobby 😊

Just thought I'd let you guys know we just got 2 of your new lights and two heaters. We love them and it's so nice to be able to get co-op stuff here in newfoundland Canada thanks to April's aquarium.
Something helpful I read online, is that if you have your heater set up then keeping the water temp at 80 or above while starting the nitrogen cycle will help the beneficial bacteria grow.

We have a 25 gallon planted tank. We had a small group of pygmy cories who were doing great but as soon as we added 8 green neon tetras the cories became unhappy, hiding all the time and not swimming in the mid water like they used to. Thought these would go well together! Bummer. Anyway cool tank :) hi all. ✌️

If the Cory's don't finish the sinking food, do you have to remove it so it doesn't cause too much bacteria in the tank?

Ok, so I have a question. I have a 13 gallon tank. I want a honey gourami ( a male) as my centerpiece fish. Then a schooling of 10 blue teras coz I absolutely love them. They are truly the fish which I mostly want in my tank. My question is for my cleaning crew. How many pigmy corys can I add to the above mentioned team to match the requirements of the 13 gallon tank?

good for beginners but test strips are okay for quick checks, you shouldnt use them to ensure a cycle is done though, far to often even your version of them, they are wrong. no argument here but I wish you at least included you should do a liquid test kit for at least ammonia and nitrite, or 50 percent waterchanges everyday for the first week after adding fish if only using strips

If I wanted to add a feature fish, like a dwarf honey gourami, would I need to reduce the other two types of fish added? Mine is 10 gallons as well.
I would, rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish pre gallon.
@@anthonyscavone5856 This rule is antiquated and does not compensate for bio load or fish temperament. I'd be hesitant to recommend this as a guideline.

where was the ammonia coming from?

My habrosus keep dying as much as i acclimate them. They're so hard to keep alive is like i buy 10 because i know they'll die and 2 survive and im wondering if it's the store because no other fish i but from anywhere else died but they're the only one that sell those cory. The other chain stores around me said they can't order them because of their mortality rate. Any advice? And good video
I also stopped buying fish from them because they die off quick and pop up with diseases some I've never heard of until I shop at that store its just I really want habrosus lol
And they only have a 48 hr guarantee so I feel like they know something wrong. The other stores have 4 days and up to 30 days
Hm, I would stop buying from that source too and maybe check online/auctions/local clubs if you're looking for that specific fish. Testing your tank water might be helpful too in case there is something you aren't seeing ~Lizzie

The fish are smaller so it's ok. 1 inch of fish per gallon is the basic rule..
With the live plants, it should be fine.

I don't understand why every company puts nitrites on the regular test strip. It would be much more useful to have a cycling test trip with ammonia, nitrites and nitrates all on one strip. Then have only nitrates on the general strip with other useful metrics.
The reacting chemicals used in the ammonia tests cannot be kept with the other tests. This is why they are always separated. ~ Zenzo
This was a very ADSM to watch. SO many steps left out that as a beginner I would have liked to know. How did you plant your plants & create the landscape (btw it is beautiful). There should be a more detailed process of acclimating the fish when you bring them home/add water to the bag/ release the fish into the tank. This is where despite the best instructions/intentions I lose fish. Also your measure by pouring the bacteria doesn't seem exact... does that matter?
This video is the second part of two :) The first part of this video came out a couple weeks ago & it shows how to build and plant the aquarium. Also - when pouring in the bacteria, I personally don't measure, it's safe to add 10x the minimum dose (1/2 cup per 10 gallons). I try to add more just to make sure there is plenty available. ~Lizzie

Never put shop water in your tank.
Funny how you all compicate everything. If your water smells bad then you know you water is bad. I think the biggest problem with a lot of new aquarist is really over feeding. Then everything goes downhill. But good way to explain the process😀
Perhaps the title of this should be something like 'Setting up a new aquarium like everyone else'. There was 3 minutes on the nitrogen cycle, didn't explain anything except relying on chemicals, and already adding fish after a month or so. So sad. Not saying your products are bad. The foundation in setting up an aquarium in this video is unfortunately, flawed. Too many good people out there to demonstrate this that you could incorporate your products to. This was just silly.
I watched this video twice thinking I had missed the 'chemicals' the first time. I saw bottled bacteria being used, I sure wouldn't call that a chemical and bacteria is what the cycling process is all about so yeah, speeding up the process with bottled bacteria is a great way to go, SILLY not to 🤗
