@@thedangersofoxygen135but is just a way that need training more, but... The song is amazing at the studio, they do what is not Impossible do live as like studio
I think the Vocals are great. Its just that on the album they use a huge amount of reverb and other vocal effects like that. Its how they get that really ethereal type of sound. They could have used it live if they wanted though.
David Eastwell Dont forget that studio is a studio.. you can record vocals 1412451 times and pick and merge the best parts.. and they sing without playing on the same time.. they concentrate only on singing. Love these live vocals, Its something that only Mastodon have.
This is actually one of the better vocal performances of them live. They're getting better. Brann's voice is the best, but it doesn't always work with the music. Bret's voice on the albums is brilliant, and Troy is the metal vocal powerhouse of the group. Needless to say, great band, great performance.
Eh Brann has plenty of "soul" and can still sing the correct notes. if this was rock band or something, Brett would be failing out of his own song. this is NOT tough to sing, and Brett's guitar part during the chorus is really easy to play.
Don't know what the crying's about, the performance is solid for a live setting. You can't expect a studio replication. If you want to hear a studio version of the song, then listen to your CD version.
Can I share a moment? When I first heard this song in 2009, I felt shivers and instantly felt ....entranced. I have seen a few videos of them performing this song live on UA-cam, and was somewhat disappointed. This is the first time that I have heard the Chorus and felt that same feeling in 2009. I fucking love these guys, I'll be picking up a copy!
It’s amazing but definitely not, Roskilde 2011 and live in the kpit with Scott Kelly are king. The kpit one didn’t exist when you commented tho. The videos from bloodstock 2016 are amazing too.
I never said anything about Brann being a bad singer live, I was talking about Brent, the guitarist. And I also saw Mastodon live earlier this month, and I was totally blown away. They have really improved their live performance. Brent totally proved my comment wrong.
At least they're singing like they actually sing and not hiding behind a bunch of effects processors or lip syncing; that and they are playing at the same time. Nothing but love and respect.
this is probably one of the best all-around group of musicians in the world. i have been listening to mastodon all most obsessively for the new album CANT WAIT FOR EMPOROR OF THE SANDS!!!
I love the way the song starts so small and works up and hits it's climax about 3/4 of the way through the song then slowly declines back down. Favorite song to play on guitar, Mastodon is my biggest influence and my favorite band. \m/ Mastodon for ever!
For everyone wondering about the audio quality for the DVD, it's not UA-cam. I was at this concert and High on Fire, the band just before them, messed the audio up. This is the first song so the audio hasn't been adjusted yet but it doesn't improve greatly. Regardless, Mastodon put on a good show. Thumbs up so people know.
Epic performance, epic lighting, epic shit going on in the background, epic mix and all people seem to care about is that the vocals ain't perfect. Give it a rest, they fucking slay like no one else in all other aspects. Sure it ain't perfect but perfect wouldn't be the live, human, experience.
Sean Dark Bollocks. If the vocals can't be pulled off live then they shouldn't sing and perhaps play instrumental. I thought Brent sounded sweet in this video but Troy and the drummer couldn't quite get there.
Mastodon are seriously, in my opinion the best group around, i just saw the Rush documentary, so i listened to the early 74-81 Rush, and for sure these guys have to be huge fans, it's like really progressive music, the vocal harmonies and the lyrics are amazing and of course the music, like Patrick Swayze said, they are the greatest rock band.
I'm truly happy that i bought this album. It's one of those masterpieces that you hear from begginning to ending without skipping anything, because you never know when Mastodon pulls off something kick ass. Whole album is epic, takes your mind to another realm. Truly fucking sick
I can appreciate the album for what it is.Mastodon make great albums. Live cds are always hit or miss,if you hear love albums & you dig em,then you know the band is good. He'll I'm not a huge fan of live audio, unless I'm a die-hard fan. This I bought for the DVD so me & my dad could watch this while trippin' on acid & weed Needless to say he digs em He digs em.
I don't know why everyone is bitching about the vocals. They're actually much better than alot of other videos that I've seen of them. They actually did a really good job, not to mention how much pressure they were under because they were being filmed. That shit is forever.
Got to see Dethklok + Mastodon on tour for such a fucking epic show. Both bands performed live while using the MASSIVE screen and lighting to drive the narrative of their sets. Essentially a whole animated Metalocalypse! episode played live with the animation running in-sync for their set, and then for Mastodon's set they came on and performed the entirety of Crack the Skye with the tale being told via black-and-white silent film. Just a phenomenal show.
@27sevenSToFo great for you, man. I hope you guys go big. In the mean time, I'm going to go back to what really matters- the fact that Mastodon is a wonderful band. I'll be listening to their albums again. See you. :)
I just really want to point out the fact that the drummer is doing both singing AND drumming. At the same fucking time, at that. Even the guitarists' are holding their own. I'm going to have to ask you all to govern your sated opinions for a mite bit of a minor second and enjoy, as well as revel, in this wonderful bands hungover-from-the-week-before's glory. I don't see you up there doing that. Obviously, they are bankin' more than you, my friend.
+Trenton Cook Everyone in Mastodon contributes to vocals and can rip the fuck outta their respective instrument.... This band is laden with talent thats why their my favorite band...
Honestly, none of that matters. I absolutely LOVE Mastodon, but fuck me, they suck live (vocally that is). I think they don't see their own live videos, and therefore don't understand the issue. If they did review their own live footage, maybe they could work out why it doesn't sound great, or at least know what to do about it. They deserve to sound so much better live, but they just never seem to do so. As much as i try to support them when i see them live, cheer them on and so forth, i also have to be honest with myself. It's cringeworthy to watch them on stage in my opinion. I get this sad, stand-offish feeling that they don't give a shit about sounding great live, seeing as they don't seem to improve that greatly... I know it's hard to do what they're doing, but making it too hard for oneself is also a big mistake. The sound that comes out is the most important thing, not how hard what they're doing is.
@brutelements depends on your speaker system. This song was not mixed for like a basic 2 speaker system that came with your computer, whoever mixed this mixed it for HD tv's and better quality speakers.
I realize your comment was 2 months ago, but Brent just has a really different singing style, I personally love it, so different from everybody else in the metal universe
People don't realize how hard it is to sing while playing an instrument, especially when you're playing stuff as technical as Mastodon!!!!
Exactly
Especially when the drummer is playing 30bpm faster than what the song should be at
@@thedangersofoxygen135but is just a way that need training more, but... The song is amazing at the studio, they do what is not Impossible do live as like studio

Brent's meowing is strong in this one. Love it.
Meowstodon Rulz!
Wow, Troy and Brann nailed the vocal harmony in the "How can I tell you that I've failed? Tell you I failed" part
Brent and Troy remind me of good old Alice in Chains
I think the Vocals are great. Its just that on the album they use a huge amount of reverb and other vocal effects like that. Its how they get that really ethereal type of sound. They could have used it live if they wanted though.
About say something like this! God bless you!
David Eastwell Dont forget that studio is a studio.. you can record vocals 1412451 times and pick and merge the best parts.. and they sing without playing on the same time.. they concentrate only on singing.
Love these live vocals, Its something that only Mastodon have.
seen them 4 times now, vocals live are rough, but the musicianship is unparalleled, so good, good vibes live.
I prefer mastodon live over their albums,
i hardly even listen to their studio stuff
For being able to still pull off those vocals without the reverb, and while playing their instruments, is just so admirable about this band.
This is actually one of the better vocal performances of them live. They're getting better. Brann's voice is the best, but it doesn't always work with the music. Bret's voice on the albums is brilliant, and Troy is the metal vocal powerhouse of the group. Needless to say, great band, great performance.
They've come such a long way
In my opinion, Brent's voice has this certain soul like he's meaning every word he sings, it's the best thing in my opinion :D
i agree i just love his voice theres something about it and just the feeling he puts into it when singing
Zach Northey I was just about to say I like the parts brents singing better cause there's more passion in it
Eh Brann has plenty of "soul" and can still sing the correct notes. if this was rock band or something, Brett would be failing out of his own song. this is NOT tough to sing, and Brett's guitar part during the chorus is really easy to play.
SpookyApparition yeah but good thing it's not fucking rock band, its a REAL rock show where you don't have to be perfect.
actually, in my opinion, his voice in live performances is kinda shitty, but... whatever :|
I can really listen to the bass now
and damn, that's one fine bassline
Don't know what the crying's about, the performance is solid for a live setting. You can't expect a studio replication. If you want to hear a studio version of the song, then listen to your CD version.
There are actually some bands that are able to sound exactly as good live as on the album. Look at Rush.
Whovian1029 the differences in rush and mastodon skill level wise is unprecedented...
true bro... it gives the live version a certain soul
Bhiner1029 go watch rush then
@jc cloud Hey man i love the Dead but comparing them to Mastodon is pointless, very defferent musical styles
He's getting better, even though it isn't necessary. A+ for effort.
how someone can drum like that and sing at the same time is beyond me.
I just remembered. I fucking love Mastodon.
Me but I just realized😂 (I’ve only heard a couple songs here and there)
Seeing them live was probably the best concert experience I've ever had.
me too
Best chorus of the last ten years.
Yeah if youre expecting the same production as the album go away 😍
He probably wouldn't care. That dude is so chill
I'm so glad that Brann had more vocals in the new album, his singing is brilliant.
He is a fucking beast drummer too. Dude is so damn good.
my ears came all over me. MASTODON!
I was at this show. Both the mix live and on the dvd did such a disservice to the band.
This is no doubt the best live Mastodon performance
It’s amazing but definitely not, Roskilde 2011 and live in the kpit with Scott Kelly are king. The kpit one didn’t exist when you commented tho. The videos from bloodstock 2016 are amazing too.
I never said anything about Brann being a bad singer live, I was talking about Brent, the guitarist. And I also saw Mastodon live earlier this month, and I was totally blown away. They have really improved their live performance. Brent totally proved my comment wrong.
Hinds for president
They kept that together really good, for as fast as they were going.
Mastodon is the greatest.
At least they're singing like they actually sing and not hiding behind a bunch of effects processors or lip syncing; that and they are playing at the same time. Nothing but love and respect.
Brann Dailor is a beast on those drums ! And finally you can hear the drums so loud ! Mastodon
Thank Mastodon for beautiful music.
Best gig of my life.
Gotta say, this is like twice as fast as the actual song. They are on crack lol.
Holy shit they are on crack hahahahahahahahaha
Crack the sky...
This is one of the few bands that brings hope to my heart for heavy metal.
Ahahah! I love watching Brent's head bobbing while singing.
Nice performance as usual, by the way. Outstanding solo!
this is probably one of the best all-around group of musicians in the world. i have been listening to mastodon all most obsessively for the new album
CANT WAIT FOR EMPOROR OF THE SANDS!!!
I don't ever wanna hear one bad fucking word about Mastodon.
I love the way the song starts so small and works up and hits it's climax about 3/4 of the way through the song then slowly declines back down. Favorite song to play on guitar, Mastodon is my biggest influence and my favorite band. \m/ Mastodon for ever!
This fucking blew my mind this band is so tight rhythmically it’s actually extremely impressive to be able to lock in like that
I must say maybe not even I can do guitar/bass/drums at the same time with vocals. These guys are talented.
The bass is so loud in this version...I love it.
Those vocal harmonies give me goosebumps...
I've never heard anything like it..! Breath of fresh air. Brilliant..!!

The vocal harmonies are solid!

the chorus is just soo..beautiful...makes me wana cry
A Bateria do Brann é Sem noção !
frenética demais!
Excelente!
What an incredible live performance. Chills everytime.
I wish I was there sooooo badly. Mastadon are the saviers of metal. The greatest metal band in the world by miles at the moment
since when Zach Galifianakis playing on guitar for Mastodon? :D
beast band!
looks more like the late Ryan Dunn if you ask me
I just love the Gilmour'ish solo! It's so freaking epic!
Brann Dailor is an awesome drummer! Dude nails it, hard, WHILE SINGING!!

still one of my all-time favorite songs by Mastodon 👍🤘🤯🤘
Un morceau extraordinaire !!!
I thought it was not as good as the album at first but this live version has its unique twist in presenting this song that I learned to like.
I can appreciate the album for what it is.Mastodon make great albums. Live cds are always hit or miss,if you hear love albums & you dig em,then you know the band is good. He'll I'm not a huge fan of live audio, unless I'm a die-hard fan.

Needless to say he digs em
He digs em.
i hear ya! and they nailed that song at an insane tempo on top of that! hats off to these bad asses!!!!
As a group, these guys are ah-fuckin-mazing. Everyone sings a part while playing all fuck out
a masterpiece is born...
Aragon Ballroom is an awesome venue. I have seen so many great bands there. It is great they chose this place to record the DVD.

os vocais compõem o som da banda...
ajudam a criar toda essa atmosfera sonora...
tem que ser assim mesmo.
fantástico!!!!!
Can't wait. I was so happy when I saw them back in 2009 and got to meet them in 2010.

I didn't know their drummer was one of the main singers!!! Fucking cool!!!!
In fairness he has only sang in their last three albums.
+Connor Bestwick Thats because its the only albums he has made with the band
+Casper Pedersen He played on all the albums, he only sang on the latest three.
Oh my bad.
I just finished watching this dvd... My head was smashed by an epic wall of sound and my mind was subsequentially blown to Oblivion o_O
best live performance ive ever watched! i love the skreetching sound of the vocals
One of the best songs ever!
Great song and fantastic live version. Very solid
1 of their best performances 4 Oblivion on the web
Everytime I have seen them play this, including this video, Brents solo has been nearly inaudible in the mix. Its like one of the best solos ever.
una de las mejores canciones de MASTODON sin duda alguna.....
@quicksilverstew yes. we were informed at that concert that mastodon would be filming for their live DVD
Beautiful.
Already preordered the limited edition, cant wait!
the best concert ive ever been to
Mastodon make great music.
Love how for a music dvd it isn't over produced sonically .
man trust me. this is a 5 star vocal performance from all of them right here considering some of the times ive seen them live lol.

Granted the levels in the live mix could be a little bit tweaked.
But this is live. This IS awesome
You clearly haven't seen them live in person. you don't even notice this. They're mindblowing
God, Mastodon is amazing. Everything is amazing... Though i have to admit, i'm not a huge fan on their vocals live, but besides that... Perfect
@SuperBanti EXACTLY!!!! Ghost of Karelia sounds AMAZING.
What a band!!!!🇧🇴🤘🏼💯
Melhor banda!!!!!
I agree with you, Brent has a sui generis vocals, love it.
I doubt that anyone could sing less intense, flailing with his arms and legs of the drum at high speed.
i only got around to lisetning to mastodon just recently....I got chills, these songs OMG XD
And....attending a Mastodon show went on my bucket list.
awesome performance
cant wait for the dvd
wicked, I love Mastodon
Cannot wait to see them April 19th...
I really like this song!! Thanks!!
Brann is a beast on drums!
i was gonna share this video on FB cos ive had it in my head all day, but after hearing Brent sing, there goes THAT idea. haha!
anybody else see Billy Howerdel at 4:33 on the back screen
