Love this collaboration! "Vincent" is such a great song by Don McLean! He originally did it in 1972. What a great remake with Home Free! Rob's voice is perfect for this song. Such a beautiful tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.
A huge statement has been reinforced numerous times over the last half dozen years when notorious artists have collaborated with Home Free in singing legacy hits and in several cases have reached out to Home Free. Home Free has shown extraordinary respect to these artists to the point there is mutual respect and admiration that is very visible both ways. Home Free is a very humble group of guys who know how to pay their respects as they showcase these well-respected and well-known artists. Just wow, and we are the benefactors of this wonderful trust as they deliberately give each other and us a chance to enjoy once again a freshness to the decades that gone on before us with a wonderful tribute. Home Free is showing the industry a strong core value of High Regard, Strong Consideration, Attentiveness, High Opinion, and Due Regard for those who have set the stage for the music we enjoy today. Thank You Home Free, for your leadership by action that we all admire and appreciate doing things the right way!!!!! Notice the portrait at the end the center one has Don and Home Free amongst the ones hanging on the wall they are looking at. The warmth that Home Free brings to the song backing up Don is simply so pleasing to the ear!!❣
So gorgeous! I agree that scene needs to be on a shirt. Adam would love your shirt! I think this should win an award…for beauty of song lyrics, performance and the video itself. It’s stunning. Don sounds great for 78! And Home Free backing him up?!…just outstanding! Good one DJ!🤩😄
Truly phenomenal!🥰 What a voice Don McLean still has! And of course Austin also sang great, but Rob's voice is just perfect for this song. His voice so warm, soft as silk and full of emotion. The quiet, not overwhelming background vocals and guitar playing complete it for me. It's the same song as my youth, but with the Home Free twist it's something different. A beautiful song where I, of course, as a Dutch person, know the history of Vincent van Gogh well. I lived not far from his birthplace a while. If I could, I would have given Don McLean and Home Free a bouquet of sunflowers in memory of Vincent. The sunflower one of his most famous paintings 🌻...... 💖 💖💖💖💖💖
Loved your reaction! I was a kid when Don released this in the early 70s, and like you, I heard it but had never really HEARD it. Now having been through many losses, conflicts and my own battle with depression, the beautiful lyrics of this song and the way it was presented by Home Free and Don have given me a small glimpse into what Van Gogh may have been going through. Although I'm afraid I still don't understand his paintings, I admire what Van Gogh was able to do with the thoughts and feelings which overwhelmed him. And Home Free - these boys have yet to get one wrong, adding gorgeous vocals and backing to this touching song. Wishing these 5 could go on forever.....
McLean will be 79 in October; yes, he's still in amazing voice. I've been looking forward to your reaction. Tim Foust commented somewhere that he thought "Vincent" was one of the best lyrics ever written. And of course, the beautiful diction that makes every word draw you in.
This is so gorgeous. I have always liked it. Like it even more now. It's sort of amazing that Don invited Home Free to back him on the re-release of his two most iconic songs. Tim was quoted on the website Everything Nash as saying that this may be the most perfect song ever written, both musically and lyrically. They also backed him on the title track to his new album, American Boys. There is an audio-only video on Don's channel. It's a bop.
Not to ignore or dismiss this gorgeous collab....but seeing your t-shirt, you absolutely have to watch the "home away from home, Adam Rupp's home edition". ❤❤
It is very strange to me to think that this wonderful song, that I have listened to hundreds of times in its original iteration, can sound so similar and yet so different and still be so stunningly beautiful. I'm so glad that this one won the poll this week...stunning song to get to hear. Thank you for this reaction DJ
Don was truly a poet with his lyrics. He wrote it in 1970 at the time he was singing in classrooms with his guitar, He was reading a biography about Vincent and realized that Vincent was misunderstood and was not crazy but had an illness and he wanted others to know that so wrote the original lyrics on a paper bag and that paper bag with lyrics sold in 2020 for 1.5 million dollars.
It was a stroke of genius to use just the guitar without additional percussion. It is interesting to watch the shifting paintings in the background. Rob rises to the occasion. Great reaction.
There are a number of places where in the melody line, Rob has the lead and Don is singing harmony along with him. There is already respect shown in asking them to sing along, but to take a supporting line as our guys sing lead is a remarkable gesture.
Thank you for bringing up Dr. Who. I rewatch that clip over and over again. This version made me cry as much as the original and the Dr. Who clip does. Thank you for this wonderful reaction.
Don McLean doesn't write lyrics, he puts poetry to music. Home Free have proven to be perfect collaborators with other artists. They always highlight that person and remain true to the concept of the music. Their harmonies & singing are incomparable. BTW, I so want a copy of the picture in which they're literally absorbed.
This is so very beautiful. This collaboration is so very awesome! It amazes me how good Don McLean still sounds after all of these years. Love your reaction!
The emotion from them all comes through loud and clear. I was only 7 years old when the song came out; I agree with you that going through my own struggles makes me appreciate the song so much now.
❤ Thanks for this reaction I love my Home Free men and their collaboration with Don McClean is stunning. I was 8 years old when the Album American Pie was released This brings nostalgia tears it was what I call my first big girl album a Christmas gift from my brother and I love it
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Such poignant lyrics set to such an exquisite melody. The intricate guitar and rich voice of Don McLean combine with the song to form an incredible musical experience, which is only enhanced by Home Free's amazing collaboration. This song always brings me to tears, and this version does the same as the original. Don's voice is as beautiful and expressive as it was in the 1970s, and this is just magnificent. Thanks for a great reaction! ❤
This song was on the American Pie album, released in the early 70's. I bought it when I was a teenager and every song on it is a gem. This was my favorite. But here is one of the rare instances where the remake is better than the original. By the way, Don is 78 years old. I saw him in concert a couple of years ago and he was incredible.
The first time I ever heard this song it was sung by Josh Groban. But I love this collab too. Home Free really does know how to sing with people and make sure everyone gets a moment.
This song just gets you in the feels, doesn't it. I absolutely love how Rob's tone is so very close to Don's. And when you get Don, Rob and Austin together it is so pretty. They have actually done one more song with Don and it's on his new album. I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this beautiful but sad song.
I was a junior in high school when this song first came out…… Don still sounds amazing, Rob was perfect for this and Rob and Austin’s harmonies were magical! Perfection! ❤
Yes a print of that painting would be ace, the only way to get a Van Gogh!! I'm 70, and this beautiful song has travelled thro life with me. An amazing version sung with such respect as always, all 6 did it such justice. Thank you. (Anyone know if Adam R is ok, he looks very gaunt).
Someone commented on a different reactor's channel that HF had had a very long day doing videos, and this was the last one of the day. Every one was tired.
I am so happy you did this one! I am a lot older than you, and have loved this song ever since it came out. It always makes me cry. I am a huge Doctor Who fan, & that was one of my all time fav DW episodes!! It always makes me cry as well! Love you DJ! You are always in my thoughts & prayers! 💜🙏💜
The story goes (and I don't know if this story is true, but it sounds good) that Don McLean wrote this after he read a biography of Vincent Van Gogh. I think it would be difficult to understand and appreciate the lyrics of this song without knowing something about Van Gogh's life. Home Free (and Don McLean) knocked this one out of the park, as usual. And as talented as Adam Rupp is, I'm glad he was singing in this one instead of beat boxing. The beat boxing would have detracted from the beauty of the melody and the story told by the lyrics--just my opinion.
Read the book, “LUST FOR LIFE”. Don, I’m pretty sure read this (it’s a biography of Vincent VanGogh&, was so taken about 😮his life. So, Yes…a very true story of his sad life. He was bi-polar $, schizophrenic, &, back then, there were no medications for this. They said he was Crazy 😢😔‼️ Now, does the song make a bit more sense ?
Don Mclean still has it when he sings. Don Mclean and Home Free sings great together. The harmonies are great. Rob and Austin did great. I love Home Free and they are my favorite group. 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
LOVE this song. Don McLean is a masterful storyteller, and Home Free are wonderful vocalists that blend perfectly together and with Don. I also love the Doctor Who episode that features Van Gogh. It is my absolute favorite episode ever! Beautiful!
That is one of my all time favourite Doctor Who episodes! Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve watched it, I ugly cry every single time and this song does pretty much the same thing. Rick Astley did a really beautiful rendition too.
Home Free has been a group I respected for their vocal talent and have wanted to like. But my indifference to country music has always made me pass over them if I had the choice. This song may have just tipped the scales for me to earnestly check them out with more receptivity. (Then come back for all your reactions.) Thank you for putting this out there and catching my attention @DJ_410!
SO MUCH of what they do is NOT country. (I don't like Country Music either.) Just look at their video list and try some of the non-country songs you recognize. They do everything from humour to heartbreaking.
Not just Rob and Austin. Don was singing too. It was a trio.

When Don picked Home Free to do American Pie it started some lovely songs together
Truly phenomenal!🥰 What a voice Don McLean still has! And of course Austin also sang great, but Rob's voice is just perfect for this song. His voice so warm, soft as silk and full of emotion.

It was all six of them singing. Austin and Rob were highlighted with Don, but it was an effort of love from all of them.
HF and Don!! Magical

The combination of Don & Rob's voices is almost magically!! They fit together so perfectly

This came out in 1971! And he does sound almost the same! I did grow up with this in my house. ❤️🎶

So well done!
Of course I love this! Don, Home Free, and ROB!
This is one of Rob’s favorite songs. Loved everything you picked up on in the lyrics and video! Great reaction ❤
Rob is Awesome!
Loved the way Austin & Rob blend so well with Don on the several trio parts in the song.
Loved the Van Gogh image of them at the end was AMAZING ❤
Thank you for bringing up Dr. Who. I rewatch that clip over and over again. This version made me cry as much as the original and the Dr. Who clip does. Thank you for this wonderful reaction.
That episode of Dr. Who was wonderful and one of my favourites. The scene in the gallery is a genuine tear-jerker.

Never heard him sing this. I can hear it though. Home Free did an amazing version here with Don's beautiful tribute to Vincent Van Gogh
@@marylee7467it was on his 2001 album. It may have been titled “Starry Starry Night” even

Exceptional 😊such a beautiful song and tribute to Vincent. If only he could hear it he would be soo proud. ❤️🐇
Don is 78 yrs old and this song came out in 1971
Dude, your D&D shirt is reminding me of being in the Navy during the early 80's a large group of us would gather in the galley at sea and play 😂😂😂

Beautiful song, beautifully sung. Great reaction!
Yes, I need that framed painting on my wall!
Don is 78 now, and sounds the same as he did when he relased this song in 1971.

What songs sound like when the poet sings them..
People dont understand that people didnt think he was a good artist, back then, didnt like his style and the loud colors.
