I really love your prints! I've been wanting to try gouache for a while now. I might just have to bite the bullet and buy a set. You're quickly becoming my favourite artist to watch on YT, thanks for the upload !
That's really kind - thank you! Gouache is a joy to mix, so you really don't need many to get started!
Zoe was a uni friend of mine and i'm thrilled to see you go through her book. She's an absolutely lovely person!
This is so lovely!!
Your artwork is beautiful!😍 You are so talented Helen!
That's so nice of you - thank you!
I love painting birds! This made me want to get out my gouache and have a play.
I'm really glad!
Beautiful
This is so good, I love the additional little pencil details, Ive been starting to do that too ☺☺
It's really fun to do, and almost feels like cheating!
Your artwork is stunning, the pencil details are always the cherry on top. It's so wonderful watching the details unfold. Keep up the amazing work Helen!
Thank you! 😁
Your gouache paintings of your village are beautiful!
And I appreciate you flipping through the book, there are so many on the market it’s hard to decide if one is going to be worth the investment. I really liked this one.
Thank you!
The pigeon is one of my favourites of yours
Thanks!!
I love 💕 it!! Gorgeous color matching gouache, the colored pencils details, & the soft textured background of the pan pastels combined nicely for this finished painting. Thank you for sharing this piece!🥰
Thanks ever so much!
@@helencryer You’re welcome 😉!
I think it turned out fantastic. Really nice. Thanks.
Thank you!
Love your paintings ❤your sketchbook looks amazing 😊
Thanks!!
I would have been delighted if I’d turned out a pigeon like that,it was great! It really came to life when you painted the eye in. I don’t have any gouache (yet!) but am going to try painting birds with my watercolours. Another great book btw.
Thank you! I don't know why, but I think birds are so much fun to do!
I thought your pigeon was fab! I like the textures you got laying the coloured pencil on top of the gouache. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you!
I love your pigeon! You are so good at birds. x
Amazing!
Thanks!
I buy my gouache and other art supplies online as there are no art stores in my small town. I've struggled a bit with trying to pick colors from the Winsor and Newton printed brochure. Even the color chart in the online store is deceptive with the colors so I'm trying to pick up colors I see other artists online use like you and Sarah Burns.
Most of my supplies are bought online too - I've definitely used UA-cam to help with colour selection a lot, and it's a large part of why I started this channel - because I'd built up a lot of supplies and wanted to add to the online info.
Me too, and I agree…the WN color charts are terrible! I wish they made dot cards for gouache, but they[d probably crack and/or break off entirely. @helencryer, do you ever use a dry palette for gouache, and if so, what brand would you recommend for minimal cracking/breaking? Also, do you ever use acrylic gouache? I’ve been wanting to try some (mostly for use with watercolor when I don’t want areas to reactivate), & have decided on Holbein, but have no idea what colors to get. Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you for all your lovely videos. 💕
Thanks! Yep, I've put together a gouache palette, with W&N Designers Gouache, and it rewet fine. I'll find a video with it in and link to it below.
I have Holbein's Acryla Gouache, and it's lovely, but I can't remember if watercolours would go over the top OK, or would repel them. (Sorry, I'm away from home for a while so can't experiment for you). The other similar matte finish acrylic-type paints I really like are Flashe Paints. Pencil definitely sticks better to that than to the Acryla Gouache.
Just primary colours, black and white is plenty, though I think I've got a gouache mixing video too, which I'll link to as well.

Lovely painting! Nice to see a gouache video… I love using gouache 😊. It seems like I might even be using it slightly more often than watercolour this year.
Thanks! Whenever I use them I always think I should use them more!
I love your pigeon, however I was hoping you were going to do that puffin in the book! 😄
Haha - sorry!
I loved your pigeon! Birds are my favorite animals. This is inspiring me to try more bird art.
Thanks! I don't know why, but I love drawing/painting birds!
beautiful gouache paintings Helen! The prints are superb - could you please share whether you scan or photograph your originals for printing? greetings from Sydney :-)
Thanks! I just take the originals to the printers and they do it - I think they scan.
First I've seen gouache used in mass tones. I have been using it as watercolors for decades. My high school art teacher taught us both. We did our underpaintings as watercolors then added details in mass tone. I don't think we did entire paintings in mass tone. I would just use acrylics as my opaque medium. As a poor indigenous person.
I've never been taught with gouache at all, so I just do what I please! This is interesting to hear though, thanks! Although I do use acrylics occasionally, for some things I definitely prefer the matte look of opaque gouache.
I really like your work but I never use gouche paints
Thanks!
I think you did a major disservice to the artist by showing every page of her book. Nobody needs to buy it now, because you just showed everything in it.
With respect, I disagree with your comment. As someone who owns a LOT of art books, I find flip-throughs like this immensely helpful. Your statement that “nobody needs to buy it now” because Helen did a quick flip through of each page overlooks the actual *content* within. It appears to have a tremendous amount of information, in addition to the project tutorials further on, none of which is visible nor accessible from the viewing. Rather, one can see some of the images, the layout, and what’s covered overall…an invaluable tool in determining whether it’s a good option for them. I found it extremely helpful, as it allows one to get a feel for the contents, including the determination of whether it’s at/above/below the level one’s at in their art. Many of the books I own are extremely redundant…especially in the sections prior to the project pages. This book was one I’d seen online, but hadn’t purchased, fearing it would fall into that category. On the contrary, thanks to Helen’s flip-through, I’ll be purchasing this book as a result. 😊
My intention is actually the opposite, and I'm grateful to @DanniGeee for putting it better than I could!
