She still has her voice. She could fill an auditorium. She had a huge fan base. Nobody can perform covers of her songs correctly. She has a style that was totally original. I couldn't get enough of her songs back in the 70s.

I was introduced to her music in the mid 90's by a depressed camp counselor going through a breakup. He was a really great guy and I was just a sad teenager looking for someone to talk to. It's kind of weird how just one conversation late at night with a person I never saw again still holds some meaning for me. I listened to Rickie Lee Jones for most of that year. But my favorite song is the one she hates. I love hearing her talk because it reminds me of Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds". I just love her voice and her accent. It's so unique. I listened to that song endlessly in my 20's. I could listen to her talk all day. She has such a soothing way of speaking.

I was a 12 year old girl when this song came out l loved it the first time l seen her sing it on tv. I loved her the way she sang it l loved her red beret hat. I asked my mother to buy me a red beret like the girl who sings chucke in love. She got me a black beret instead but l wanted a red one. As l wanted to look like the girl that sang that song l love. I was very disappointed. My mum said black goes with more. But l just loved this song and the girl who sang it l thought she was beautiful. I use to sing this song on my record player in my room l would do the actions like she did and sing in my mirror with my hair brush as a microphone. Such good memories of this song. It's a shame we have to grow old, I still see her fresh faced old soul, that bohemian chick with the beanie hat lighting a hand rolled cigarette and I always will. That first album is still one of my all timers, it sets a mood, it has a flow emotionally that weaves the listener in and out of. Just a brilliant collection of great storytelling, and the musicians that populate the sonic landscape within are the best of the best. The album will never diminish or degrade, it holds up today as well as if you're hearing it for the very first time. To me it's like an old friend come to call when I hear it.

@@Sheerkat7 Hi There, I fully agree, but I'm old. My dad used to say no one wants to get old, but no one wants to stop having birthdays either. And The Who famously once sang "I hope I die before I get old" aren't we lucky that didn't happen? Here's something you might enjoy about raging against the dying of the light as we age. The Who just put out a brand new album (both members in their 70's) and there's a brilliant line from the song Rockin N Rage. "I'm Rockin Rage well past my prime, denying the curtain, wasting no time" it gives me the chills just to hear that. Never stop fighting! I'll post it for you, check it out and see if you like it. If you get a chance let me know what you think, I'd love to get your take on the song. ua-cam.com/video/49fVOODLUy0/v-deo.html Cheers!

Damn it! Who recommended this Rickie Lee Jones video to me?! Hell, now I’ve wasted my entire day listening to every song a million times over on her album of the same name. I first heard in it 1983 as an unsettled young boy from New Orleans that damn 1979 album, holy shit, it was like valium. I’ve been moved by the pain of Joplin, felt Chaka Khan’s unrelenting and unforgiving fire (talking to her album I did tell her that I loved her) and as the wall flower of every house party as a teen I turned into “The Party Animal” by Tina Marie’s square biz. But Rickie, thank you for you, your album Rickie Lee Jones you channeled that performance from some other-worldly spiritual realm. I still shade through every emotion listening to it.
By the way I still haven’t found a Jukebox that goes “Doy’t, Doy’t” and I still think of Last Chance Texaco when my female friends complain of not being able to find a good man. But Rickie’s song “Company” always leaves me fighting with all my manly strength to hold back the tears remembering my sister and best friend, damn you Rickie! I recognize the area of New Orleans you live, my grandparents lived near there. I can pass on now when he calls me home cause Missy Rickie Lee Jones you completed me long ago baby girl, big kiss.

When Rickie Lee got to the chorus, I knew that I was in for a ton of feedback from my friends, because at that time I, Charles Edward, was (and still am) in love with her. 42 years of marriage. I still have the lp and I still love the song. Coincidentally, Van Halen had a minor hit around the same time, so my friends loved saying, "Chuckie's in love and Jamie's crying."

Am now a fan here 💙
Had to explain that while I dug this talented artist b4 this took me 2 another level of appreciation. My eldest daughter is a huge fan and now I get it. We actually attended a multi stage event in Portland Oregon in the 90z where we got to see the likes of Lenny K Dave M and yeah RLD too‼️
Needless to say it was awesome but I was in shrooms so missed out on a few moments here n there overall~lol
Was still a very good trip indeed~*

Cool, I learned something today. I was a big fan of Ricki Lee Jones back in the day. And have discovered Tom Waits in the recent past. However, I didn't know that they were an item back then.

I love Rickie Lee Jone's music. Saw her at the then, Universal Amphitheater. In the 80's I met Chuck and we had a brief flirtation he invited me to watch him & his band Chuck E. Weiss and the Goddamn Liars at the Central, which is now the Viper Room (rip) I saw Tom Waits in while in college. It all came full circle when several years ago my son was selling lemonade with his friend in a rural neighborhood in the Santa Monica mountains off of Kanan. Rickie brought lemonade from them. She was a neighbor.

1979 when this album/record/vinyl came out, it epitomises 'Cool' attitude. i would spin her records often as an undergrad uni student.
Her songs r especially memorable because the friend who first introduced me to her songs has since passed away, leaving us a few YT videos of our times together w RLJ songs as the background songs to his videos.

That appearance on SNL was what catapulted her to stardom. She also sang a very sultry version of Coolsville. While the album was charting nicely, "Coolsville" on SNL made her an overnight sensation

What a great guy by all accounts is Chuck Weiss. Ricky Lee Jones has such a repertoire of brilliant tunes my favourite being the album Pirates where she worked with Becker & Fagen with superb results. Like to see her discuss working with them. Great video and thanks for posting.
