Matt missed the point of Grand Torino.
As an Asian it was one of my favorite movies
They “slurred” EVERYONE in that movie-Asians, Blacks, Whites and broke it down even further with Polish, Italians, Irish and Catholics. EVERYONE got their turn in this movie. The whole context of the movie is lost and twisted. Matt and Zach you guys really have the best automotive podcast. Seriously it’s important to a lot of us.

@@David_Journey What are you talking about? Zack has been on the podcast since the start when it was all "Shut up Darla!" and Nino on the sound board. There has never been The Smoking Tire without Zack and he brings a great deal to the table.
It irks me to hear Matt talk about excess while he drives a FUCKING COUNTACH. No wonder the dude has anxiety and depression, he’s a hypocrite and he’s trying to be a woke liberal while he’s a rich guy with a Countach and a huge freaking house while he’s simultaneously bitching about human excess. That’s enough to make anyone anxious. Complaining about excess while trying to open a second multi-million dollar car storage place that caters to other rich folks 😂
Not intended to bash Matt, as I like the guy I think he’s insightful and generally well spoken, and I love cars, and I love his take on them. But man, to hear a countach owner complain about human excess just gives me a headache. If excess bothers you and you want to be a woke liberal- give away all your excessive possessions. I’ll take the countach lol
Classic american liberal elite mentality. Drive gigantic SUVs, own a house that uses a ton of resources, then consume even more stuff that is marketed as eco to make themselves feel good and embrace woke culture to pretend they're good people.
I couldn’t agree more. I would say that a good amount of people who have a truck will use it until it dies and it will be their only car. Matt owns a lot of cars and buys new cars which is bad for the environment. It seems like he is talking down from his throne when he goes on these talks about excess and it makes me not want to listen to him anymore because why does that matter to how the vehicle performs. If Matt really have a shit about the environment he wouldn’t be going out on that boat he has, he wouldn’t own a bunch of cars, and he sure as hell wouldn’t own a business which enables and encourages people to buy more cars. Needless to say I miss the old Matt that was true to himself.
Same. I've listened to TST forever, and will continue to. Matt is GREAT. But going so overboard on the TRX for being useless and excessive, while simultaneously taking a AMG GT Black Series on a rally and praising it...when it's literally good for almost nothing except on a race track is wild to me.
A TRX can at least be an "only car" for an enthusiast. It can do anything except get good gas mileage. Fast. Off road. Tow. It's got a huge cab. Tailgate. Looks cool. Sounds great.
I'm waiting on some link to vaccination status at this point.
He was fine until he started hanging around purple hair'd Facebook employees from the Silicon Valley. I use to be an avid listener but tapped out during the 2020 election season after injecting too much politics in his content.
Dude, it's uncool to call Clint Eastwood an a-hole racist just because of what his CHARACTER said in a movie.
The fact that he also died for the people that he once hated seems like a guy who went woke. I think that this woke logic needs to stop because it treats everyone like a toddler all of the time. The real world has some shit in it and you can’t be soft your whole life or toy will be taken advantage of.
Stopped this episode to watch the Blackwing Icons video. Holy shit.... Possibly the best car content I've seen on UA-cam. Legit rivals anything old Top Gear ever did.
The gr86 video was amazing
Love how the ID4 got 4 and 5 star reviews from so many other review outlets 😂 Camisa's a real one
I seen one the other day and it looks and sounds like a total recall car, its like rolling security architecture
Matt, you're a gem brotha' - thanks for the Garrison love, and we were just stoked you got to spend a little time with him 🙏
Sorry for your loss Mike. You’re a gem too, been a fan since you and Matt were coworkers.
Regarding the apology (which, while listening to said episode did get my attention...like....wtf was that??), Clint Eastwood is NOT a racist; he was portraying a bigoted Korean war vet in a film that won multiple awards. It's a redemptive story about a man trying to atone for horrible things he did in combat that he brought home and has held onto before he dies.
Great, now I'm the preachy one!
The video exposure...😵😵
RW: the rant about halfway through on the excesses of T-Rex & EV Hummer
They both bring up totally fair points about the car being asshole-ish. But, Matt getting preachy about not wanting to be excessive is a stretch.
The irony of a guy claiming to not be a fan of excess when his father made the family fortune literally overseeing the creation and sale of the excess lifestyle while Matt makes his living indulging/facilitating the excesses of others (long term storage and maintenance of collector cars, reviewing primarily high end automobiles and watches, and all the boats) is almost comical.
As someone who, by and large, enjoys Matt's work and aspires to a similar lifestyle I'm not trying to be holier than thou. But, since Woke California Matt is all about acknowledgement and growth, can we at least have an acknowledgement of this hypocrisy/irony? I mean, it's like saying getting drunk on Bud is worthy of criminal prosecution, but if you drink single malt Islays, you're good...
I'll make fun of you guys...You don't like excess but have 8 cars. Some people chose a big Truck instead of 8 little ones. Same shit different delivery hole. Thanks for the entertainment. The ICON Blackwing was legendary,. Almost made me cancel my C8 order.
I think he was speaking more to the fact that the big truck has to be equipped like an s class, and thats why he gave the raptor praise because if the thing is as well equipped as Mercedes, having side by side shocks and being able to drive in the most fucked conditions is a luxury, its the fact that the grandpa truck is a dying breed to me is the problem
Great podcast as always, even if I watched a super over exposed podcast 😉.
Jason Camisa is such a legit honest car journalist, Thanks guys!
Not the beat podcast imo.
Talks about cars being excess yet owns a lambo, and a Ferrari, and a bunch of other shit. That’s my problem with the whole whole idea. No matter how much you preach you always have blood on your hands. Personally, I don’t think that it’s the car manufacturers responsible to see if their cars are socially acceptable or not. That is something that the free market can decide. EV’s are going on the same path as gasoline powered cars. Right know they just go fast in a straight like and that’s it. I think of it as the 60’s American cars.
Virtue signalling to the masses, while doing the opposite in private. Nothing new.
These guys own old classic Ferraris and Lambos. There's something about classic cars that makes them seen in a different light, gives them allowances in how they're judged. I think one of the things that makes a car obnoxious is it being appealing to douchebags who want excessive things for their excessiveness. Countach has been a douchemobile in its day; however, in the present, the majority of douchebags would get an Aventador over a Countach. This means Countach is no longer a douchemobile, it's no longer an excessive car in a way that excessive enough for today's douchebags.
I tend to lean in favor of Farrah’s views, except on this. Owning more than one car can be seen as excessive. One’s flavor of excessive can be seen differently. If I owned 1 TRX ( I don’t btw) how is 1 vehicle more excessive than owning 6? What’s the basis we are grading this on. Because of parking or driving lanes? What about having to build or retro fit buildings to store something that was designed to be used and then recycled when done. If I own 3 TRX’s from here on out. It’s still less excess than owning 6 cars including an old Ferrari. I’m sorry I just down see how one can judge based on such different principles.
@@MPPJ1931 exactly. It's the same with some politicians and celebrities preaching about Climate change, while using a private jet.

Self-driving car giving time back? It's not like you can do anything you like with that time -- you're still stuck in that container for a duration of time. You'll end up just wasting that time on the internet waiting for your commute to end. Let's be honest here: most people won't be making business calls or working on their business; most people will just be killing time on their self-driving commute. So TIME is not an argument for the majority of people. That'll just mean a win for the internet companies because they'll get even more of your attention (and data).
I'd say driving a car may even be HEALTHIER than staring at a screen watching youtube or scrolling through your so-called "social" media "feed" for that amount of time:
1) your eyes are not staring at a screen from a short distance (bad for eyes)
2) your brain is focused and you're constantly making mental calculations (rather than being brain-dead watching youtube)
3) your neck is in a better position because most people tilt their head down when using a "laptop" or phone.
Sure, self-driving stuff may save lives, but I'm just saying you'd be sacrificing yourself for the "greater good" thinking that you're the winner here.
“I hovered around in between just being fat and kind of worthless” you are hysterical Matt 🤣🤣🤣
Seven minutes of ads? Jesus man.
I love the discussion on excess, particularly about half-ton trucks.
Growing up in Texas, it is almost expected that if you are a guy, you need a pickup. My first truck was a 1991 Mazda. My grandpa originally purchased it to flat tow behind his RV. I loved it, but I caught absolute hell from my high school friends for it not being a real truck. That truck was vandalized, dragged across the parking lot, and even picked up by hand by a few of the football team dudes.
I was desperate to get a real truck and ended up in my uncle's 1991 F-150 which improved my social standing considerably. Ended up in a couple Toyota Tacomas through college, but went back to full size trucks until recently.
Other than being great highway vehicles, full size trucks suck as dailies. They handle like garbage, are a bitch to park most anywhere, and even a 6'1" person such as myself needs steps to get in a 2wd half-ton (trucks weren't this bad 20 years ago, tbh).
Mid-size trucks aren't much better other than being easier to park. They are still too high off the ground, get nearly as shutty mpg, and ride/handle no better than half-tons.
I finally did what I ahould have done 15 years ago and bought a Ridgeline. It's a crossover with a bed and I don't care. It handles nice, rides good, carries my motorcycle and mountain bikes, and I don't need a step stool to get inside. I don't feel the slightest bit cool driving it, but damned if it isn't the perfect daily.
or you could've gotten an 07 tsx and an actually better 1st gen honda ridgeline used. Would cost about the same and you wouldn't have to drive a fugly and big crossover/trucc around town.
@@thehumanoid6543 You don't think the 1st gen Ridgelines are fugly? For the record, I have been a fan of the Ridge since it came out, but I find the 2nd gen much more attractive and the latest facelifted model pretty handsome. I've not driven a 1st gen, but there seems to be a general concensus within the Ridgeline community that the 2nd gen model provides a nicer driving experience. You could make the argument that the simpler mechanicals are less trouble prone, but that's an argument anybody will make when comparing older and newer vehicles. I'd rather have a new vehicle with a warranty.
The Ridgeline isn't a small vehicle, but it's manageable and drives smaller than it is. I've owned two vehicles before. I had an Accord as my daily and an older Chevy Silverado for when I needed to do truck stuff. I got tired of keeping up with 2 vehicles (not including my wife's). I also started having pain sitting in the Accord. I'd drive my truck and the pain went away. My right hip can't tolerate sitting low to the floor, so cars are a no-go. I need to be in either a crossover or a pickup, so might as well have a pickup that drives like a car. The Ridgeline gets nearly the same mpg as my wife's small crossover, so I drive it longer distances. I drive her vehicle when I am parking in crowded areas.
Only thing I would change is replacing the wife's car with an EV, but at $40 a month we spend on gas for her vehicle which is paid off, that makes 0 economic sense. We both work from home. I drive a bit on the weekends, but that's it. Both our vehicles are paid for, will be very low mileage, and should last a long time.
@@aaronbehindbars Well Id say youre partly right. The first gen ridgeline is like a f150 with a tundra nose. It doesn't sit right. But atleast its not a Honda passport with a bed. And I just figured used ridgeline cause I thought that you'd like to have some fun too. And nothing says good quality, high revving and great handling sedan like a 1st gen 6 speed tsx. I'm in college and I have one with michelin as3+'s, some good brembos and a k&n cold air intake and I gotta say, having driven a fk8 type r, this is way better in the way it drives. And yknow the old adage, one car always better than two(until it's not true, that is 😂). But yknow i think you have more knowledge about your situation than I do, so it was probably wrong for me to comment.
@@thehumanoid6543 The Ridgeline has always been a crossover with a bed. Both gens are based on the Pilot/Odyssey platform. The 2nd gen models have the same AWD system that Acura uses that has a torque vectoring rear diff. It handles extremely well and with the paddle shift ZF 9 speed gearbox, it's a lot of fun in the twisties. Most people have no clue how these are built and what they can do. They're truly impressive vehicles.
@@aaronbehindbars sure. I just am fundamentally opposed to new trucks. They just don't do anything for me. That's just me, the 24 year old with an opinion on something I haven't even sat in 😅😆

Still prattling on about a truck that's no bigger than the typical 1500 or 2500 with big tires on it that everyone encounters EVERY day...geeze..
I’ve listened to this show since the beginning like 10 years ago. I respect Matt’s opinion on vehicle dynamics and engagement. I appreciate the many hours of quality him and Zack put out. All that being said, the American Excess discussion could not be more hypocritical. Let’s look at some facts. This entire argument boils down to “impacting others on the road” because if you park next to someone else in a TRX they can’t open their door. Inconveniencing others on the road you say? How about the countless times Matt basically boasted on the show about shutting down the street with like 150 concrete trucks to pour the foundation for WCCS? Did that inconvenience anyone? Not to mention that concrete production is one of the most intense carbon emitting sources on the scale. Wanna talk about excess? Tell me again how owning a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and several other cars is reasonable, but a guy from the Midwest shouldn’t own a 1500 pickup if he wants to? My man literally built this building for the sole purpose of enabling other wealthy people to own more and more cars. Oh and he is expanding to another building to do the same for more people? Matt I don’t blame you for being out of touch with most of the country because of where you live, but don’t pretend like your choice of excess makes you a morally better person.

Matt, I’m a big fan, listen to almost every episode, watch every video… But honestly the first half of this one was hard to stomach. The first 50 minutes talking about excess, being woke, etc., all from someone very very well off who commonly wears $30,000 watches and owns ridiculously expensive cars… I debated for a whole day on even leaving this comment because I don’t want to be one of those keyboard warriors. And I don’t even disagree necessarily with most of what you said, just doesn’t seem like you have much of a place to preach at people for buying a raptor or an EV hummer from the point of excess when you are wearing a Vacheron overseas and driving a vintage Lamborghini. Like I said, I’m a big fan, and enjoy your content several times a week. Perhaps a bit more taste is necessary when covering these topics in the future. All the best.

In italy is the norm for years. You cant drive old cars in cityes. Sucks.
It’s so dumb to be so afraid of being considered a racist just for making a joke that was clearly meant as nothing more than that.
It is very important to consider the humanity of your audience. Very important.

You won't get car people to like EV's until there's no chance for range anxiety... period. Those that live in dense urban environments with abundant charging networks will be the early adopters... and they are. But for everyone else that have limited charging options, drive longer distances, and/or live where it gets really cold or hot... no... NO... EV's do not work. Not when you can spend $10-$20-$30K less for a gas powered vehicle of comparable features, luxury, etc. Battery Density on EV's have to improve at least 50% (you'll get lighter EV's that can go 300+ real-world miles anywhere in the country)... it's everything.

You guys are slightly off about Wranglers. Around here in the south, it is the vehicle of choice for toxic masculinity and yuppy-deplorable. Obviously there are exceptions, but its sad what has happened to Wranglewr crowd, or what crowd has started buying Wranglers.
The only thing worse than acknowledging criticism for making a joke is calling the guy you're quoting a "bag of shit" just to regain popularity amongst the sensitive. #toolbag
Matt you need to let your guests finish talking you just have talked over Jason 20 times .
Forward to 1 hr 19 mins and see what I’m talking about
Fun fact, the black bumpers on the Navajo were the explorer sport "exclusive" ones lmao
Please please please put the mic on not on the table next time, like on literally anything you’re not banging every 10 seconds ❤️ love you guys
While Matt scrabbles to gain every bit of excess for himself, he goes on about how wasteful and excessive we are as a culture. Matt you have an integrity problem.
Oh, but he hands out $20 bills to the homeless while driving around in his Ferrari. That makes up for it all?
I thought I would add to this comment, Matt is the reason that I have my current Porsche fixation. I have enjoyed his videos for a long time. I find his social commentary to be way out in left field, literally. His left wing perspective is way out of balance with his lifestyle. And unfortunately that grinds on me. But I do enjoy Matt’s car content immensely.
All he said is he's trying to do better, not that he's looking down on others for not following his footsteps. Also it's his channel is he has full right to voice his opinion. If you can't get behind that it's your loss.
Seriously people just need to relax on the senstivity towards a comment he made .. #5
I agree with Jason about the BRZ/86. If it had a usable hatchback I'd buy one tomorrow. Seems like both Subaru and Toyota don't need to supply the same car..one of them should switch to a hatchback version. Think Z3 coupe.
Just words who cares ... I don't think Clint Eastwood is racist, he's old, has no filter from brain to mouth, and doesn't care what others think of him... some day everyone becomes that way...
1:26:32 the problem is when they sell out of a limited supply for a higher profit. Thats when companies start rolexing their products, if you can guarantee a sale because its more difficult to get then the re sale value allows you to to adjust the MSRP accordingly, and plus in an economy where who has your particular product really does matter it only incentivizes company's to limit supply to people that are willing to justify the hoops and expense for the product because they themselves can profit off it, even if it makes the company millions in free marketing.
Not much discussion about how pavement will handle so many powerful, instant torque cars in the electric future. Will they have to change the formulation of pavement? Switch to concrete?
Not just the G wagon do you become a butthole, it's the same with people who drive BMW's and the Lexus.
lol @ Model Y for $45k anytime soon
I didnt know Camisa before this podcast, this guy is cool, hope he becomes a regular
