  • Working on the Q50, checking to see if any oil has made its way to the throttle body after installing the z1 intake tubes. Considering installing the PCV delete by EPS Tuning

    I personally don't worry about blow by in any NA platform since it's usually going to be pretty minimal, at least in my experiences. Even in turbo platforms that are known for having lots of blow by like subaru EJs, eliminating the blow by has negligible performance benefits. If I were going to do anything, it'd be an AOS and not any sort of plumbing delete.

      I've never worried about it either, but it seems to be a topic of discussion for this platform. I'd worry more about it if I was running at constantly high rpm, but that isn't the case. However, after eliminating those baffle box things from the intake tubes, my concern was that blow by (no matter how minimal) would be coming directly into the intake tubes. There hasn't been evidence of that, but i'd be interested in preventing it if there was another way to do it other than putting those boxes back in line somehow.

      @@SpeedCultureStudios when I had my WRX, id take the intake tract leading to the throttle body out and it would sometimes be dripping oil there was so much blow by, and the tubing had caked on oil from just under 10k miles and even that wasn't much of an issue, just to give a frame of reference. Yours looked very clean and I personally would just leave it. If you had blow by issues, you'd know. Just my two cents.
      If you're dead set on some kind of solution, why not just a standard in line catch can(s)? You'd have to empty it but judging by the look of your throttle body you'd probably hardly ever have to empty them.
      Also, are you sure those boxes are for filtering out oil and not some other purpose?

      @@butts4653 You're right. I had mentioned in the video that if I was having blow by issue that I assumed I would see at least SOME evidence. And again, I'm not going to be racing the car on a daily basis or probably not even on a weekly basis so consistent High RPM driving will be minimal.
      I considered catch cans, but my goal is to document for folks a quality project without making unnecessary expenses. If catch cans were truly necessary, I'd go for it, but at this point they seem like they'd be a waste of money--despite the fact itd be a fun video to make!

      @@SpeedCultureStudios have you thought about something like the Z1 plenum or manifold for future mods? Would make for some interesting videos. Can't remember if you got Dyno tuned or not yet

      butts I have thought about that as an upgrade. I haven’t seen any real significant gains in terms of power tho so it’s hard to justify. When I see dyno numbers after the installation of their complete kit only hitting 340-345 to the wheels and then seeing guysbwith my mods hitting 330-338, another $1000 to get 5 or 6 hp doesn’t seem worth it.
      I haven’t gotten tuned yet-March 4th!!
      It would be interesting to see what adding that manifold, plenum and headers would do for me in comparison tho! If I could get z1 to give me one or “sponsor” the video I’d do it lol-I don’t think I’m at that level yet though!

    I also have the Z1 tubes and have eliminated the PCV collector, i would assume putting it back on would take care of any oily residue

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  5 років тому

      afzal mohamed Of course. I assumed I’d find some residue, but was surprised that I had none. If I had found some, my first plan was to find a way to put the collectors back in line. I’m going to keep it as is for now.

      @@SpeedCultureStudios im going to modify mine and put it back on, down the road oil may end up in the throttle body. Keep up the good work, mods are coming along nicely

      afzal mohamed I’m with ya. I don’t like the idea of oil mist collecting on the throttle body. And just because I didn’t notice any residue doesn’t mean it’s not working it’s way up there. Just have to figure out exactly what I want to do. They say catch cans aren’t necessary if you’re not forced induction or if you’re not constantly running at high rpm, but they certainly wouldn’t hurt anything. We will see! Thanks again for your kind words and I’m happy you’re following along!

      Change all of the spark plugs. Not just 1. Also could be a coil pack issue
