Why Monks Received Male Prostitutes’ Service | Who Yūjyo, Kagema, Oiran, and Tayū Are

- I’ve made a few videos talking about the history and culture of yūjyo, the prostitutes in Japan.
And in the “omake” talk of the video I made about oiran, I briefly introduced the male prostitutes, "kagema."
You might have heard about yūjyo or oiran through anime and manga, but I believe most people do not know about the male prostitutes.
I have to be honest, before I started this UA-cam channel, I didn’t know about them myself.
But they actually have their unique history and culture too which is worth studying about.
So today, I will explain about the three main differences between yūjyo and kagema, the female and male prostitutes.
I have received many questions about “tayū” as well, so I’d love to talk about who they were, and how they were different from oiran at the end of the video.

Thanks for another great video! I am very curious about whaling. Is it a controversial issue in Japan? And could you enlighten us on what the public debate looks like?
Shogo, can you give us insight into the history of the Male Geisha??
As a deaf person from Singapore I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for adding English subtitles although I notice from my lip reading skill that you spoke in English . But reading English subtitles really enabled me to enjoy the content of this video. Thank you very much
@NO MERCY.! allow me to emphasise that lip reading skill is not 100% accurate.
Wish I could something for you either than praying:(
Yeah, as a deaf person myself with no lip-reading skill, I'm really grateful for those English subtitles. Without them, it'd be way hard for me to understand anything. Any videos with manual subtitles are instantly better than those with automatic captions. So again, I'm glad they used a bit of their time and effort to add in the captions.
@@octo4276 yes not all deaf people know the lip reading skill. I rather not be too dependent on reading lips all the time. I prefer to understand the full contents from the subtitles in a positive way

I'm a historical archaeologist in Japan, and I remember doing research on Takeda Shingen a few decades ago. He actually had a male lover who was among his 24 generals. Kosaka Danjo
How was this found out? Was there written documents about his favourite general like journals or letters or paintings?
Now paintings would certainly have been an interesting secondary source.
May I ask on who is Takeda Shingen?
@@learoynotjenkins5514 The Unitversity of Tokyo's historical archive has the written pact/agreement signed between Takeda Shingen and Koasaka Masanobu (one of Shingen's 24 famous generals), where both agreed to enter into a love pact. Takeda Shingen still had a wife and a duty to create heirs, but the homosexual relationship he had was a common tradition in pre-Modern Japan.
@@wallaaby5907 One of the greatest generals during the Sengoku period and a major threat to the three great unifiers of Japan (Oda Nobunaga, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi). It's honestly one of the best periods of history to learn about and i highly recommend you learn about it, amazing history.
There used to be male geisha too, and they were called taikomochi? They were more like drinking buddies, joke tellers and so. At least that's what I read in Lesley Downer's book about Geisha. She also mentioned oiran and tayu.

I honestly think that Yukaku should be seen as a black mark on Japanese history not a point of pride. When even the government allows girls (as said in previous Shogo videos) who are 10 years old or younger to live and train in an enviroment to be sold off is absolutely disgusting.
Saddly, prostitution was and is present in almost all societies, both in the east and the west, and the notion that child prostitution was bad (and child labor in general) is quite recent... sexual slavery is as old as dirty...
I think we shouldn't apply our modern moral standards into history. People in the past had a different view from us, and their living conditions were different. They were busy trying their best to survive, so human rights came second. Children who were sold into prostitution actually had more chances to survive into adulthood than children living in poverty. At least, they were fed and received education, unlike other children who died from hunger and diseases. Children mortality rate in the past was really high. There were years with famine, and parents had to abandon some of their kids so they could feed the others.
@@miyako1909 btw I think Shojo did say that this used to happen in the Edo period which is the most peaceful period that Japan has ever been in, so your point about people trying to survive doesn't really hold. Besides I don't think that just because people were trying to survive justifies putting children into prostitution.
@@miyako1909 I feel like the fact that the world historically sucked more than it does today doesn't really excuse the fact that it, well, sucked
Yes, even the young boys who were only training to be Kabuki... I was so shocked
Let us always appreciate Shogo for discussing even things about his cultural history that might be found distasteful, because educating and acknowledging even the bad or questionable aspects of history ensure that we do not repeat our wrongs.
The information is interesting...seriously though, Shogo has gorgeous eyes.

"Sacred prostitution."
Well, that explains why all those shrine maiden-themed doujinshis and other hentai materials are a thing.
my guess is that they are the eastern counterpart of the Roman temple harlots
Sacred prostitution was a thing in the west too, before christianity.
@@Pdor_figlio_di_Kmer and during Christianity
@@dylanotto1675 The first centuries, yes. Then, in 380AC, after the Forgotten (by me) Roman Emperor made Christianity official religion of the Roman empire, it was moved inside monasteries where the nuns did it for the sole use of the elder friars and only under the direct supervision of the abbot. :P XDDD
I -bet- know half of these miko-themed doujins were Reimu yuri.
Damn. Oiran had to pay off student loans the rest of their lives too.
Since their life span was age 25, no paying off...
ikr🤣🤣🤣
@@daniby9894 Actually, considering how expensive they were they would have had a lot fewer customers (and the right to refuse sexual services to certain clients) so they would have been exposed to fewer STDs, and had much better living conditions than the lower ranked prostitutes, and thus probably lived a lot longer.
@@Amy_the_Lizard Yes, Oirans were expensive and ranked the highest but that didn't mean they had the "freedom to refuse." He talked about it in the video too. Also, dont forget that rich bandits/thiefs could also be carrying STDs that they can transfer to the oirans. So rich doesn't necessarily equal being free of venereal diseases! :(
Excellent video!
sounds like your kind of video

Hey look who's here it's Linfamy!
Hey Lin! I thought so, too.

I am confused. The government removed women from preforming since some were prostitutes but the male prostitutes were ok🤔 .
Loved your approach, very informative.
Cheating is also a big thing in Japan, so it fits right in with male prostitution, and love hotels. Not to mention the "don't ask don't tell don't care" thing that they got going on. Most foreigners mistake it for politeness or a cultural thing. It's not.
Well, If even the monks could use male prostitutes.
Welcome to doublestandardland
We apparently it was considered to be "training" 🙄😒
@@bellebonebag8096 Sorry, could you explain this better please? i don't understand very well...
You know you have a very precise way of presenting history in a very friendly and straight forward manner. Also one request could you do a video on Japanese swords that had no curve. I know there is a variation of the Katana that had either the very slightest of curve to being completely straight of differing lengths, and would like to more know about the time periods when they would have been used and from what regions in Japan. Also I am not talking about the "Ninjato" (or ninja swords that were popularized in media like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, other popular media of my youth.) But non curved Katana because there have been so many variations of Katana since as I understand it Katana is kinda like a catch all meaning Japanese swords. You often refer to what I would consider Wakizashi, and Tanto as Katana and just qualify them as having shorter lengths, I do admit that I am not the most knowledgeable, but I infer as much as I can reading between the lines of your videos. All great information buddy love the content.
Just a small correction. Legislation is enacted rather than dismissed. Dismissal in a legal sense is usually when a case that has been brought before the court is thrown out, or dismissed, for various reasons like lack of probable cause to arrest, improper procedure, lack of evidence, etc.
It doesn't take away from the video, which is very interesting.
The word “dismissed” is misused a few times in different erroneous ways in this video.
Thank you for letting us know!
Ah! Finally u mentioned about these! 😭 thank u.
Btw, yes, I agreed with u about that "refused desire". For me sex still sex no matter it between man and woman or man and man.🤦♀
I have a theory on this one, if the monks were to have sex with a woman, they probably didn't wanna risk get her getting pregnant (probably even with contraceptives) and thus, could probably have to do something about it. If they do have sex with other men, the risk is nonexistent if their partner can't be impregnated.
@@ElkaPME hahaha that will be into another genre, omegaverse
@@ElkaPME that is just like the Jedi not being allowed to form families, but not being actually celibate
i wonder how many force users are just bastard children of Jedi, given that force powers seems to be inheritable as Luke and Leia demonstrate
@@devforfun5618 Grogu is probably Yoda's bastard. Maybe we get more info next season.
@@ElkaPME That was my first guess. Then I remembered that a woman's period was seen an impure for a long time, so it also could be that monks were completely forbid to have relationship with women cause they are "impure by default".
I was in the train listening to this and I laughed so hard when you talked about "sacred prostitution". Really interesting video!
Good way to bring money to the Temple.
I’m not entirely sure how your videos have made their way into my recommendations, but I’m greatly appreciative of all the information I’ve learned. Regardless of how relevant it is, it’s all interesting and easy to swallow.
A brilliant video on history and culture! You have a very clear and concise way of explaining concepts! I wonder, as someone very interested in the history of fashion, if kagema had a unique style to their fashion like how oiran had extremely intricate and grand outfits which have a unique style to them.

I love your channel❤️ Quality content and another side of Japan. Very interesting! Please keep up!!
This was highly informative! I was highly interested in geisha, some years ago - and, from there, in the pleasure districts in general. However, there are details about the "floating world" that are hard to find for Westerners - especially about what our culture considers more taboo topics, such as prostitution. Oiran and other entertainers are rarely mentioned, let alone described in detail - and one almost never hears about the yūjyo and kagema. As such, I am very grateful for your concise and - above all - forthright presentation of such things. Thank you!
I absolutely love they way you explain things, your accent is so clear and easy to listen to!
No fair!! I thought I was only being entertained. I ain’t sign up for no learnings! 🤣 this was super entertaining and informative bro, keep up the awesome work 👌
I absolutely adore your approach history. With a lot of taboos around prostitution, this may not be something people look for in terms of studying. I find these anthropological topic fascinating, especially regarding the roles and impacts of westernization on traditions, values and ideology of a society. Often time, we think of westernization in the sense of modernization and modern history and did not fully understand the extend and roles it has in these aspect of society, or that may just be from my limited knowledge. But yeah, awesome presentation! Thank you for the CC as well!!
Thank you for your informative and well researched presentation. I have studied Zen, Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism for many years and when I travelled to Thailand Myanmar and Laos for many months I took the opportunity to visit temples and meditate with months. It was wonderful and even the landscapes I found intently mystical but....I met and went out with a Russian girl who had lived in Korea, Japan and Thailand and spoke these languages fluently along with Russian and English and some French. The reason I mention all this is that she mocked my going to temples and my admiration of monks...and to get my hackles up she took an upskirt shot (she had a very dynamic body) and sent it to some monks she knew and sadly within minutes several sent back salacious responses. She said that my Western view of monks and the practice of Buddhism was highly idealized.
A very well and informative presentation. Thank you Shogo for the effort of doing this specially when you mentioned that you also made your own research to make this possible. Congratulations!
Your speaking style is beautiful, as is your videography. Thanks for this amazing look into this world of the past.
