This is what America is all about. This song speaks for itself. This is a beautiful piece of music. I will never forget this song. Standing Side-by-Side. Blacks and Whites as one person. As on human body.
I see comments about muddied up music, troublesome key changes, etc. but must confess, I've Never heard a better rendering of The Battle Hymn of the Republic! Not the Mormon Tabernacle Choir...not even Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's wonderful rendition at the Presidential swearing-in. I've shared it on FB & been told by others how it gave them chills...just like me! Joyful! Joyful! I Hope you'll keep this posted on UA-cam always and always. I come and find it, and share it, over and over. Thank you! And God Bless you!
I heard this choir for the first time today singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic during the inuguration. It was magnificent and impressive! By the way, they looked beautiful. I'm sure many parents were proud. Thank you to those who chose to present them to the nation.
We need to stop thinking the world is designed for our OWN personal comfort. Just because you like one style of music, that doesn't mean that everyone should feel the same way. Sometimes personal opinions should stay personal.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic is just TOO reverent, too patriotic to be treated in a modern, jazzed up, cavalier style. This song appeals to the deep felt sentiment of 150 years worth of patriotic Americans and devout people who love America and God. I wonder what kind of reaction you'd get from all the veterans of the Civil War or World War I and II? Zack....would you be okay with a new jazzed up version of Silent Night to be sung without using the original melody? Change for the sake of change is what is wrong with today's society.
This is my church, my choir, and yes, there it is very diverse. I am very proud to say they will be singing THIS SONG at President Obama inauguration ceremony. Be sure to look for them as they will be at the actual ceremony and not pre or post events!
Like many others (I think) I heard this choir for the 1st time when President Barack Obama was inauguration for his 2nd turn of presidency. WOW... this is one of the best choirs I've heard... and this arrangement of >>Battle Hymn of the Republic
Sorry to hear the orchestra has to struggle with this, because they did a magnificent job! I am no musician at all, but maybe it's the "screwed-up" manner in which it's done that makes this such an outstanding performance!!! That, and the joy on the faces of the singers. I NEED a DVD of this!
I'm sorry, but I beg to differ regarding the arrangement. It not too little change and not too much. It's just right. I used it with my adult ensemble. They killed it. Had more compliments on it than any others that we did.

I've always been a fan of BTC. It started with their version of Hallelujah Chorus for a Christmas concert shown on TV back in about 1994 or so. However, some of their arrangements - like this version of the Battle Hymn are too muddied up with conflicting key changes and modulated jazz chords and counter choruses and vocal rhythms that all dilute the original power and purity of the song's original melody. NOTHING, and let me repeat, NOTHING written in our modern, jazzed-up times can ever improve upon the original by changing the basic melody! Every single time I hear this song performed THE ORIGINAL and TRADITIONAL way, tears always well up in my eyes and I get a lump in my throat. It is truly a song anointed by God. But BTC, I am so sorry to have to admit that this version does not inspire me nor to I get choked up with tears. Since I was a small boy, there is an anointed power in the music and words of this sacred song. Unfortunately, this version left my mind wandering and and hoping and hoping the whole band and singers WOULD FINALLY GET IN THEIR BEARINGS AND RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL MELODY AND CHORD STRUCTURE TO END THE SONG WITH A BIG WONDERFUL FINALE"! But....no, the clashing minor against major chord changes kept me so distracted...and borderline BORED!!! Maybe people who don't read or play music don't care as much if THIS song is modified so drastically. I am a retired recording artist and former jazz musician. I'n all for scatting and free-form arrangements of popular old and new songs. But PLEASE....on THIS SONG, I'm so sorry to see good musicians and music arrangers think they have to prove something by "Over-cooking" the original recipe!" Please take heed, Carol Cymbala and Pastor Jim...PLEASE! I love your church and all those saints that have been saved and what your ministry has accomplished. Sometimes, "changing something as reverent and traditional as this song should not be done....just for the sake of "change".
Could not agree more with you Scott...."overcooked recipe"....great analogy. They are a tremendous choir and fulfill a great "calling", but....the content is overshadowing the message. It becomes an ego fest for the arranger.
What Orson Blake is trying to explain is the song writing technique known as a "modulation" from one key up a half step to the next key. Fine! That's great! Barry Manilow made a living doing that at the end of every ballad he wrote. BUT...when you exceed the usual limit of ONE MODULATION during a song, and in the case of add SEVERAL modulations....then you assault the ears of listeners whom love this patriotic and Holy song because the original, authentic melody inspires them. BY changing key every 4 bars (measured in 4/4 time) or monkeying around with pivot chords and triad chords where none of the notes are the same, it comes off as frenetic, and "dischordant". The Battle Hymn of the Republic is a national treasure. It is sacred to patriots just and Christians. But to chop it all up with excessive modulations destroys the wholesomeness and anointing of this music. Imagine....playing this song version in front of grade schoolers. Will they get choked up and teary eyed when they hear all the chopped up lyrics and distracting, undetectable melody lines changing key during this song? NOPE! The younger generation doesn't get it. Nor will trained and un-trained adult ears. That is because they are not being subjected to pleasing sounding music anymore. Will hearing this version of the song give them a nice tune to sing by themselves, acapella? Key changes are tricky enough with the music, let alone without. If the style of this song is so wonderful, would you then be okay with jamming a bunch of key change modulations into "How Great Thou Art" ? Or Ave Maria? OF COURSE NOT!!! These songs are deeply engrained in our souls as being Holy, sacred, and never to be mocked or made fun of. So then, why does some arranger get a free pass by butchering patriotic songs so much that the original melody is forgotten when it's played? Change for the sake of change is not always a good thing. Read my original review of this song for more specifics. @@orsonbarke8066

This is an excellent arrangment with great risks and modulations that are against classial music theoretical concepts. OUTSTANDING

Battle Hymn of the Republic
by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir
Album: High & Lifted Up
VERSE 1
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the
Coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where
The grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of
His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on!
VERSE 2
He has sounded forth the trumpet that
Shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men
Before His judgement seat
O be swift, my soul, to answer Him
Be jubilant my feet
Our God is marching on!
CHORUS:
Glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory hallelujah!
Glory, glory hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!
VERSE 3
In the beauty of the lilies
Christ was born across the sea
With the glory in His bosom that
Transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy
Let us live to make men free
While God is marching on!
CHORUS
VERSE 4
We can almost hear the trumpet sound
The Lord's return is near
There are still so many people lost
His message they must hear
Father give us one more moment
One more day, just one more year
With God we're marching on!
Repeat chorus
