I grew up with Fresh Direct in NYC and it is one of my fondest memories seeing those boxes on our doorstep. It really saved our family and was my first memory of online delivery anything! It was crazy to be able to shop online and receive those items to our front door every two weeks..
The logistics are mind blowing. Looks like a company with integrity. 10-15% less waste, coming direct from farms and they've actually organized so that their workers that are packing aren't overworked. Hopefully they get paid a New York living wage too.

I used to teach a case in business clases about Webvan and Homegrocer. Their downfall was a combination of insufficient demand density and over investment in expensive systems that dragged down profitability. Fresh direct has narrowed its service to a very high density area. That coupled with their good service is has likely been the key to their success. Would still be cool to see a documentary, though.
I part a night at my friend's house, when I woke up in the morning i saw food at the door, I called her to know if it was her that kept the food for me but i found out that the food was deliver to her
People don't even understand how much workers they have they even have remote workers. There are workers who haven't even seen the facility that work for the company.
I work at a comparable bussines in the Netherlands, called PicNic. PicNic at has around 300,000 customers throughout a large part of the country. They'll open their first giant automated distribution center next year. It will be able to service 150,000 new customers. PicNic is growing so fast and becoming so popular, that it has a wating list of more than 100,000 people. customers usually order two or three boxes full of groceries at a time. One or two days later the groceries will get picked and subsequently delivered on the same day. The products come in from farms and food distributors. They arrive in the distribution centers, get placed on the right location and get picked during the day. The totes with groceries get placed in steel frames, which are put on trucks and delivered to local hubs. From there, the frames with totes are placed in the smalland recognizable electric PicNic vans and they bring it to the customers.
This is another greedy rich guy who had enough money to build a facility as big as 11 football fields, He probably doesn't pay if the profit margin is anything less then 100%
FD entices you with $50 off $100, I even got offered free delivery for 2 months too on top of that. But their price is premium aka expensive. Better support the local small business in your neighborhood.
I have a new respect for freshdirect. When this company first opened in long island city I wanted to work there but heard it was like working in Siberia.. and I hate being cold so I passed.

This trend is kind of cool for those of us that remember the days of milkmen and dry cleaners that ice cream trucks and diaper services that filled the neighborhoods that diminished late in the twentieth century. It's good to see household delivery returning, Only the door to door salesmen and the knife sharpener guys are so far still not seen returning but stay tuned.

In my country's Walmart equivalent if the total you buy is more than $40, delivery is free of charge. Most people shop groceries through mobile apps.
