Sweetgreen is the Starbucks of salads. Overpriced, unoriginal and fast-food like. It’s more about the vibe, the status and the aesthetic than about good-quality, tasty products.
The vibe and status and all that are built on the back of a high quality product. I can say from my experience that it has the best tasting and most satisfying salads out of the rest of the chains. Because it’s so popular and so good, people laud about it. You don’t hear about chopt and sweatleaf as much because their food tastes is lower quality but comes at the same price.
I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced. The whole video basically says that it’s not overpriced but to put out the product their offering in the way they offer it, it just costs more to make it increasing the cost. The food is healthy and it tastes good, name me another salad place that’s better.

John Gable Smith Coming from a midwestern household that didn’t eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies - this is sadly what I thought salad was until I went to college and discovered a wider variety of foods.
I love how he begins the video with a clump of lettuce and FOUR croutons and essentially says these were the only "salads" available before sweetgreen.
Thai and Vietnamese salads are among my favorite. Get a little mango in there, some shrimp, some chili, lemon, a variety of different nuts and and seasonings, etc. It's just so good. The best part? Like 3$ per bowl at a sit-down place.
There's a new chain in Arizona called "Salad and Go" that has been growing like crazy. Full sized salads for $6. All natural, organic, locally sourced. And they been lowering prices too!

You're right. Here I am bringing lunches to work. I've had to google how to make salads that don't wilt and shelf stable when having no fridge and outside. It is insane a salad or budget costs an hour or more of work. What about breakfast and dinner?

I had the same conclusion when I moved to the US. In those days, they seemed to treat veggies like “chore food”, some after thought that obviously led to no one eating them.
Cos the rest of the world did not have the luxury to be able to afford the calorically dense food options like meats ... they had to work with what they had that was affordable and nutritious... this piece to me is kinda implying that a vegan lifestyle is justifiably “expensive” and worth our USD12 ... Sweetgreen is so overrated, they're trying to be the cool millennial brand but their prices are prohibitive for most people from the ages of 18 to 25, and it's not even that tasty - one could easily make it at home. There's no innovation with Sweetgreen as there are a ton of similar salad chains, however I applaud Everytable and their founders because what they're doing is truly innovative and unique - bringing healthy food at cheap and affordable prices, I really wish them all the success and I hope it spreads across the US because everyone deserves to eat healthy food at affordable prices, not only the rich and wealthy that Sweetgreen and the other salad chains target.
you would think but a. millenials are now in their 30s, and b. millenials are known to waste more money than any other generation eating out and as seen by other chains i think the aesthetic for millenials is what makes them buy. Also the fakeness of just eat salad and you are healthy is so annoying but anyways it also works. in fact some people value things more if they are overpriced. so yeah i totally agree, why pay so much for the cheapest items in the grocery store and the easiest to prepare at home...you cant overcook salad XD

while that’s true, a lot of produce sold at grocery stores at least where i am go bad very fast. like i could buy vegetables and they’ll be fresh for 1-2 days and go bad quick. cause of an injury i have to rely on grocery stores with delivery so i’m sure that plays a factor. but if u have access to better stores, farmers markets, etc, it’s absolutely cheaper and sustainable to make ur own salads
You don't need to pay $14 for a hipster salad, no matter your income level. It's a total rip off. Just get a bagged salad kit at the grocery store, and put it together yourself. Aldi has a pretty good caesar salad kit, that comes with everything you need.

However, I live within walking distance of a Giant Eagle, and I go there every now and then for specialty items. Their salad bar is $8 a pound. However, they shut down to salad bar due to coronavirus. Something I don't understand, because eating healthy improves your ability to fight diseases. But hey, at least they sell ice cream and frozen french fries, because those are so much safer for you, right?
I love sweet green because I get to browse their websites and get great ideas for my lunch. An organic replica of their salad litlery cost me 4 dollars. I went the no organic route and my salad cost me 2.50... did I mention the size was bigger also? Sweet green is a great place to learn how to make your own salad

Sweetgreens isn't selling salad, it's selling an "I'm rich and trendy" badge. You can buy 5 Casio watches for 1 Rolex or 3 Xiaomi phones for 1 iPhone but people still choose the more expensive brand.
As a cruise ship chef of 12 years. It takes me one look at a sweet green bowl to conclude that the ingredients are probably less than $1. Vegetables are the cheapest ingredients in the kitchen, and since the salad is served raw. They have less labor costs than say a restaurant that has to sautee the vegetables. The whole business model is basically shark businessmen who want 90% profits. And gullible milleneals who are more than happy to let them do it. Learn to cook if you truly want your greens!
vegetable are not the cheapest ingredients in the kitchen, they are always more expensive than starches. Very high quality vegetables are actually quite pricey, though I don't think this salad chain use the most premium ingredients. But yeah, crazy profit margin either way.
My experience was in industrial food, but i too was very suspect of the idea that there are thin margins at sweetgreen. (or any trendy retail environment for that matter) I mean do you need to scout local farms or are you just washing corporate profits through people you trust? Farmers have phones and some even have websites, but you cant put a phone call about beat yields into a commercial.
They're actually organic ingredients from farms that they own and have to manage. That means the agricultural costs of hiring farmers, harvesters, equipment, refrigeration, transportation, etc. also have to be built into their salads. That's not factoring in the high rent costs of their salad shops in affluent neighborhoods, employee salaries, marketing, supply costs, utilities, etc. Being a chef on a cruise ship isn't the same as running an entire business. Do you honestly believe that their only costs are salad ingredients? There's alot of upstart costs, overhead, maintenance, franchising & scaling, etc. And that's not factoring in that their business model relies on fresh ingredients, which means there's alot of shrink from all the food that gets thrown out each night. We can criticize these kinds of inflated costs, but let's not be myopic and unreasonable in our arguments.

Well what’s the breakdown? Salad ingredients, wages, overhead & a profit margin (it would be a 25% markup to profit $3 from $15). Fast food & a lot of fast casual meals typically come in under $10 & can even most formal places have a lot of meals under $15. Very cost-inhibitive and out of reach for most, so it seems very niche-y.

I actually worked at one of these places for over 8 months- quit recently for school.. honestly a great job cause like everything’s easy and good pay usually. But yeah I have made like $25 salads cause they add everything imaginable

The companies know that, plus places like Sweetgreen are now a pseudo symbol of status so they upcharge because they can, not because all the ingredients are that expensive

It really is the prep and wasted food if you want a nice salad you're going to have to find five vegetables if you want a nice salad example; cucumber, tomatoes, onions, carrots leafy greens lettuce. Then wash and cut them. Assuming its just for you you'll only use half to a quarter of each veggie and a little lettuce. The leftover veggies you just cut will go back into the fridge with the leftover lettuce and unless you want the same salad for the next two to three days the cut veggies and open lettuce will rot and go bad. Its why people rather pay 7$+ for a salad then go threw the pain of making it.

Sweetgreen operates similarly to subway too, where they initially provide healthy choices and popular dishes, people then douse those dishes with extra meat, corn, and sauces. It's still definitely more healthy than say, McDonald's or Wendy's, but eating a salad with 67 garnishes is not the same thing as a chicken caesar. Conclusively, as someone born and raised in NY, I always knew that the main issue with Sweetgreen is the price point. Because only poor people, as per usual have to deal with the repercussions
There’s still a void there. Eating out is very popular. There’s a massive demand for healthy & tasty food and yet it feels as if most menus are loaded with cheat meals. I could let subway get away with its mediocrity if they were at least healthy, plus as a Louisianian why settle for that when we have poboys (it’s a wonder that subway even has a footing here but that’s besides the fact). If someone ever achieves good quality, healthy meals at McDonald’s price point I think it’d be a hit, although the marginal revenue would take a massive hit and they’d depend on high volume
Sweetgreen has “that” atmosphere. It’s like the Whole Foods of supermarkets. Very particular about their ingredients, and in turn it is quite expensive but it does taste really good
4:50 I got food poisoning from a McDonald's salad in about August/September 2018. I seriously almost died. After I made recovery about 2 weeks later. I did internet search and found many reports McDonald's had a national food poisoning crisis from the lettuce in the salads. The worst part is they knew this and continued to sell the salads. I went back to the McDonald's I purchased the killer salad from to speak with manager and asked him to please stop selling the salad because they are giving food poisoning to people. I showed him my emergency department documents and gave him printout of the news reports. I just couldn't believe he told me that he can't stop selling them. McDonald's knew they were giving people food poisoning and only cared about selling their killer salad. I will never eat a salad from McDonald's again. I don't even go anymore.

Mcdonalds recives leddace from the same suppliers as many other fast food chains. All Mcdonalds are owned independently, and are not run exactly the same. My Mcdonalds had a salmonella case with their leddace and stopped selling salads immediately. Not to say Mcdonalds is perfect or great because it's not but not all McDonald's are equal.
@Jeff Webb Beef is high in saturated fat and is detrimental to your cardiovascular health. I wouldn't advise on having it on a regular basis, whereas chicken meat it's fine. The only thing which beef excels at over chicken is that it is high in iron and some zinc, but you can easily supplement this with dark green vegetables (which you should be eating anyway)
@@angellover02171 Steam them, add salt and pepper then lightly fry them. Eat with boiled rice with sauce of your choice. Maybe add an egg. There are many other recipes like "Mataar Alo Gajar" what I gave is a very simple example.

The salad I got is $12 at a deli restaurant. But the salad is humongous. I can't finish half of the salad. They put a ton of chicken, variety of lettuce and cabbage, plus the Amazing dressing and wonton crisp. I rarely go out to eat, so order a $12 is not absurd
I had an Every Table at my college in LA. It was actually super affordable and tasted good! Was one of the only places on campus I felt comfortable spending money at rather than the Carl’s Jr. or El Pollo Loco on campus.
Not everyone has the time or realises that this is something they can do. The entire problem with eating away from home is that the vast majority of people have nowhere to prepare food from scratch
As someone that used to order from Sweetgreens relatively often working in downtown Boston (before getting laid off due to covid)- I can say without a doubt that a large part of the appeal is the ease of fresh, varied meals. When you work in an office 5 days a week, with social/life/work events throughout the week & weekend, fresh veggies you get on a Saturday might go bad before the next week is over, and its also nice to have the variety they offer at Sweetgreens. I can get a kale Caesar one day, an arugula & spinach salad the next, etc. I’d definitely agree that it’s a city thing & a thing largely popular in areas with young-middle aged individuals looking for something healthy, easy, and with lots of options. I could easily pack a basic garden salad every day, but thats not what I want nor what I’m ordering y’know? Also, it might just be a Boston thing, but you’d be hard pressed to find lunch for under $12- whether you got a burger & fries, taco plate, etc. So when salads are on the same price level as unhealthy stuff, its doesn’t feel that crazy to pick the healthier option since you’d be spending the same regardless.
NYC here, and I agree. $12 salad for lunch is pretty cheap. It’s basically the same price as Chipotle and far cheaper than the vast majority of decent restaurants in the neighborhood. Do people consider Chipotle a restaurant only the rich could afford? If not, why does Sweetgreen get this label of being expensive? Sure, you could make your own salad at home for less money, but you would have to buy all the ingredients and make them yourself, assuming they don’t go bad in the fridge before you could finish them. I tried to do that, but the ingredients were no longer fresh after two days in the fridge, so I ended up having to throw them out. When you are a young, busy person living by yourself in a big city, Sweetgreen is actually an affordable and healthy spot for a quick lunch. $12 is nothing in 2022. Many fast food meals cost more than $12.
@@edwink1467 NYC here and I disagree. There are plenty of delis and hole-in-the-wall restaurants in every neighborhood where you can eat for $10 or less. Going to chains and sit down restaurants will always be more expensive. That being said, I don’t judge anyone for their $12+ salad - it’s a nice treat.
My school sold salad at the price of the normal food they give, with like 3 times the amount. It was probobly for teachers, but when I learned I could have it... It was so good! Had chicken, boiled eggs, and large packs of dressing too!
I worked near a Sweetgreen in NYC and had no kitchen. The salads are so big and filling that I would eat half at lunch and eat half for dinner. They do not allow tipping so knock 2 dollars off the price. 5 dollars a meal in NYC for quick healthy mostly organic food is fine. I would ask for extra bread and it was always givin with a smile. The employees are always cheerful, they must be treated well.
I tried sweet green once Because it was next to work ..... honestly it was worth every penny. They gave me free focaccia bread, the recipes changed frequently and half the ingredients I would’ve never thought of mixing together & introduced me to parm crisps !! So good. I make my own at home now I’ll go there for flavor inspiration once in a while.
You toss those same ingredients in between bread = sandwich. You cook those same ingredients in a pot = soup. You put the same ingredients in a tortilla = burrito.

This compares thE salad price to fast food but it's all about convenience. You can also make salad at home fpr a more affordable price. Obviously if your just making one it uneconomical, but if ur having salad 5 times in 3 days it makes sense. (FYI, I was eating salad before salad became cool)
Growing up broke, I was always confused why a salad cost so much but I could get 5 cheeseburgers for a lil over $5 at Mcdonalds. I think they just want us to die faster.

As someone who's gluten intolerant, it's a lot easier to get salads, so I'm glad their an option, and believe it or not, when it comes to finding things that won't make me sick, they're actually more medium priced. But it would be nice to be able to get a meal for under $15 at some point. So far, in Canada, the only options for that are Thai Express, Taco Bell, and A&W.

The reason people pay for this is because it’s “healthy fast food” and they don’t want to get anything from an unhealthy chain like McDonald’s. If it’s fast and healthy, then it definitely won’t be cheap.

I eat something very similar every work night. They’re called “California Bowls” and in 2017, when I was first getting into workout/CrossFit culture, these were ubiquitous. They’re 1 cup of grains or rice, 2/3cup main protein, 2 cups cookable slaw, 1/2 cup of roasted veg, nuts and seeds plus a dressing; I also add 1.5 cups of cooked lentils since I can’t stand nor afford protein powder. I can feel my muscles being nourished when I eat it. It’s exactly what anybody who is active and healthy could need after a long day

I remember when I traveled to Miami in transit to Asia. My family decided to take a break outside in the city. We didn't have a lot of money. We were walking on the sidewalks where there was absolutely no people. Just a bunch of cars. And I remember waiting a good amount of time for the light to turn green so we can cross the street. Instead of realizing we had to press the button. We than entered a McDonald's needing something to eat. And we were already worried about the prices. But I remember the joy we all felt when we saw 1$ burgers. Plus the owners gave us coke drinks for free. When they saw with our traveling bags. McDonald's was a life saver back then for all of us because of its prices. But I highly doubt that salad chains will have the same impact for people that we were back then because salads just can't get affordable enough.
Im really glad this video brought up the economics around healthy food. A major factor in obesity that I don’t see many people addressing is poverty. When you don’t have time to cook because you’re working multiple jobs to pay bills, you can’t afford a $10+ salad so that $6 combo at McDonald’s is where you go. Healthy fresh foods in the grocery store are more expensive too. It’s very hard to consistently afford fresh produce if you’re low income, and even harder still if you rely on social services. Eating healthy is a luxury because you can afford to do so.
I hear you, but rice, beans, some frozen or canned veg cooked in a crock pot can translate into affordable and healthy soups, chilis, and stews that are ready when you walk in the door.

This has nothing to do with poverty, poor people eat healthier than rich people across the globe and historically too. Almost all the protein you can get in a salad comes canned, beans and lentils, or easily cooked meats, people have been eating vegetables since the beginning of time without refrigeration, having to go shopping twice a week for 15 minutes is a non issue.
Salads & healthy diets I think is strongly correlated with the economy. When economic downturn hits more people will turn to unhealthy comfort food especially if you don’t need to or can’t meet people.
When i was young there was a salad store in my country called "Salad Days", it was ahead of its time. It had a good run but i think they'll do better nowadays.

Thai and Vietnamese salads are among my favorite. Get a little mango in there, some shrimp, some chili, lemon, a variety of different nuts and and seasonings, etc. It's just so good. The best part? Like 3$ per bowl at a sit-down place.
There's a new chain in Arizona called "Salad and Go" that has been growing like crazy. Full sized salads for $6. All natural, organic, locally sourced. And they been lowering prices too!

Sweetgreen is so overrated, they're trying to be the cool millennial brand but their prices are prohibitive for most people from the ages of 18 to 25, and it's not even that tasty - one could easily make it at home. There's no innovation with Sweetgreen as there are a ton of similar salad chains, however I applaud Everytable and their founders because what they're doing is truly innovative and unique - bringing healthy food at cheap and affordable prices, I really wish them all the success and I hope it spreads across the US because everyone deserves to eat healthy food at affordable prices, not only the rich and wealthy that Sweetgreen and the other salad chains target.

As a cruise ship chef of 12 years. It takes me one look at a sweet green bowl to conclude that the ingredients are probably less than $1. Vegetables are the cheapest ingredients in the kitchen, and since the salad is served raw. They have less labor costs than say a restaurant that has to sautee the vegetables. The whole business model is basically shark businessmen who want 90% profits. And gullible milleneals who are more than happy to let them do it. Learn to cook if you truly want your greens!

My experience was in industrial food, but i too was very suspect of the idea that there are thin margins at sweetgreen. (or any trendy retail environment for that matter) I mean do you need to scout local farms or are you just washing corporate profits through people you trust? Farmers have phones and some even have websites, but you cant put a phone call about beat yields into a commercial.
They're actually organic ingredients from farms that they own and have to manage. That means the agricultural costs of hiring farmers, harvesters, equipment, refrigeration, transportation, etc. also have to be built into their salads. That's not factoring in the high rent costs of their salad shops in affluent neighborhoods, employee salaries, marketing, supply costs, utilities, etc. Being a chef on a cruise ship isn't the same as running an entire business. Do you honestly believe that their only costs are salad ingredients? There's alot of upstart costs, overhead, maintenance, franchising & scaling, etc. And that's not factoring in that their business model relies on fresh ingredients, which means there's alot of shrink from all the food that gets thrown out each night. We can criticize these kinds of inflated costs, but let's not be myopic and unreasonable in our arguments.

Well what’s the breakdown? Salad ingredients, wages, overhead & a profit margin (it would be a 25% markup to profit $3 from $15). Fast food & a lot of fast casual meals typically come in under $10 & can even most formal places have a lot of meals under $15. Very cost-inhibitive and out of reach for most, so it seems very niche-y.

How hard is it to just toss vegetables and protein into a bowl with dressing? It takes literally 1 minute.
It really is the prep and wasted food if you want a nice salad you're going to have to find five vegetables if you want a nice salad example; cucumber, tomatoes, onions, carrots leafy greens lettuce. Then wash and cut them. Assuming its just for you you'll only use half to a quarter of each veggie and a little lettuce. The leftover veggies you just cut will go back into the fridge with the leftover lettuce and unless you want the same salad for the next two to three days the cut veggies and open lettuce will rot and go bad. Its why people rather pay 7$+ for a salad then go threw the pain of making it.

Sweetgreen operates similarly to subway too, where they initially provide healthy choices and popular dishes, people then douse those dishes with extra meat, corn, and sauces. It's still definitely more healthy than say, McDonald's or Wendy's, but eating a salad with 67 garnishes is not the same thing as a chicken caesar.

There’s still a void there. Eating out is very popular. There’s a massive demand for healthy & tasty food and yet it feels as if most menus are loaded with cheat meals. I got food poisoning from a McDonald's salad in about August/September 2018. I seriously almost died. After I made recovery about 2 weeks later. I did internet search and found many reports McDonald's had a national food poisoning crisis from the lettuce in the salads. The worst part is they knew this and continued to sell the salads. I went back to the McDonald's I purchased the killer salad from to speak with manager and asked him to please stop selling the salad because they are giving food poisoning to people. I showed him my emergency department documents and gave him printout of the news reports. I just couldn't believe he told me that he can't stop selling them. McDonald's knew they were giving people food poisoning and only cared about selling their killer salad. I will never eat a salad from McDonald's again. I don't even go anymore.

Mcdonalds recives leddace from the same suppliers as many other fast food chains. All Mcdonalds are owned independently, and are not run exactly the same. My Mcdonalds had a salmonella case with their leddace and stopped selling salads immediately. Not to say Mcdonalds is perfect or great because it's not but not all McDonald's are equal.

@Jeff Webb Beef is high in saturated fat and is detrimental to your cardiovascular health. I wouldn't advise on having it on a regular basis, whereas chicken meat it's fine. The only thing which beef excels at over chicken is that it is high in iron and some zinc, but you can easily supplement this with dark green vegetables (which you should be eating anyway)

The salad I got is $12 at a deli restaurant. But the salad is humongous. I can't finish half of the salad. They put a ton of chicken, variety of lettuce and cabbage, plus the Amazing dressing and wonton crisp. I rarely go out to eat, so order a $12 is not absurd
I had an Every Table at my college in LA. It was actually super affordable and tasted good! Was one of the only places on campus I felt comfortable spending money at rather than the Carl’s Jr. or El Pollo Loco on campus.
For those prices, you could literally just buy the ingredients and make 5x the amount

Not everyone has the time or realises that this is something they can do. The entire problem with eating away from home is that the vast majority of people have nowhere to prepare food from scratch
As someone that used to order from Sweetgreens relatively often working in downtown Boston (before getting laid off due to covid)- I can say without a doubt that a large part of the appeal is the ease of fresh, varied meals. When you work in an office 5 days a week, with social/life/work events throughout the week & weekend, fresh veggies you get on a Saturday might go bad before the next week is over, and its also nice to have the variety they offer at Sweetgreens. I can get a kale Caesar one day, an arugula & spinach salad the next, etc. I’d definitely agree that it’s a city thing & a thing largely popular in areas with young-middle aged individuals looking for something healthy, easy, and with lots of options. I could easily pack a basic garden salad every day, but thats not what I want nor what I’m ordering y’know? Also, it might just be a Boston thing, but you’d be hard pressed to find lunch for under $12- whether you got a burger & fries, taco plate, etc. So when salads are on the same price level as unhealthy stuff, its doesn’t feel that crazy to pick the healthier option since you’d be spending the same regardless.

NYC here, and I agree. $12 salad for lunch is pretty cheap. It’s basically the same price as Chipotle and far cheaper than the vast majority of decent restaurants in the neighborhood. Do people consider Chipotle a restaurant only the rich could afford? If not, why does Sweetgreen get this label of being expensive?
Sure, you could make your own salad at home for less money, but you would have to buy all the ingredients and make them yourself, assuming they don’t go bad in the fridge before you could finish them. I tried to do that, but the ingredients were no longer fresh after two days in the fridge, so I ended up having to throw them out.
When you are a young, busy person living by yourself in a big city, Sweetgreen is actually an affordable and healthy spot for a quick lunch. $12 is nothing in 2022. Many fast food meals cost more than $12.
@@edwink1467 NYC here and I disagree. There are plenty of delis and hole-in-the-wall restaurants in every neighborhood where you can eat for $10 or less. Going to chains and sit down restaurants will always be more expensive. That being said, I don’t judge anyone for their $12+ salad - it’s a nice treat.
My school sold salad at the price of the normal food they give, with like 3 times the amount. It was probobly for teachers, but when I learned I could have it... It was so good!

I worked near a Sweetgreen in NYC and had no kitchen. The salads are so big and filling that I would eat half at lunch and eat half for dinner. They do not allow tipping so knock 2 dollars off the price. 5 dollars a meal in NYC for quick healthy mostly organic food is fine. I would ask for extra bread and it was always givin with a smile. The employees are always cheerful, they must be treated well.
Currently eating my Chopt salad leftovers fro, last night that’s how big and filling their salads are lol
I tried sweet green once Because it was next to work ..... honestly it was worth every penny. They gave me free focaccia bread, the recipes changed frequently and half the ingredients I would’ve never thought of mixing together & introduced me to parm crisps !! So good. I make my own at home now I’ll go there for flavor inspiration once in a while.

The rent is huge part of why the salad costs so much. They could open up in a low income area and sell salads for less. They choose not to do that.

This compares thE salad price to fast food but it's all about convenience. You can also make salad at home fpr a more affordable price. Obviously if your just making one it uneconomical, but if ur having salad 5 times in 3 days it makes sense.

In Indonesia, you can get a similar dish for a dollar. It's called 'gado-gado' which is a vegetable salad with peanut sauce.
As someone who's gluten intolerant, it's a lot easier to get salads, so I'm glad their an option, and believe it or not, when it comes to finding things that won't make me sick, they're actually more medium priced. But it would be nice to be able to get a meal for under $15 at some point. So far, in Canada, the only options for that are Thai Express, Taco Bell, and A&W.

I eat something very similar every work night. They’re called “California Bowls” and in 2017, when I was first getting into workout/CrossFit culture, these were ubiquitous. They’re 1 cup of grains or rice, 2/3cup main protein, 2 cups cookable slaw, 1/2 cup of roasted veg, nuts and seeds plus a dressing; I also add 1.5 cups of cooked lentils since I can’t stand nor afford protein powder. I can feel my muscles being nourished when I eat it. It’s exactly what anybody who is active and healthy could need after a long day

(I don't go to NY to eat salad though. lol) But I think of Panera as a sandwich place, not a salad place. In Michigan we have some salad chains, like Freshii, one of the ones shown in this video. But no Sweet Green.

It's because the markets outside urban areas wouldn't bear the prices.
I remember when I traveled to Miami in transit to Asia. My family decided to take a break outside in the city. We didn't have a lot of money. We were walking on the sidewalks where there was absolutely no people. Just a bunch of cars. And I remember waiting a good amount of time for the light to turn green so we can cross the street. Instead of realizing we had to press the button.
We than entered a McDonald's needing something to eat. And we were already worried about the prices.
But I remember the joy we all felt when we saw 1$ burgers. Plus the owners gave us coke drinks for free. When they saw with our traveling bags.
McDonald's was a life saver back then for all of us because of its prices. But I highly doubt that salad chains will have the same impact for people that we were back then because salads just can't get affordable enough.

Fat is actual good for you as long as you staw away from the most famous corn, soy, and canola.
Im really glad this video brought up the economics around healthy food. A major factor in obesity that I don’t see many people addressing is poverty. When you don’t have time to cook because you’re working multiple jobs to pay bills, you can’t afford a $10+ salad so that $6 combo at McDonald’s is where you go. Healthy fresh foods in the grocery store are more expensive too. It’s very hard to consistently afford fresh produce if you’re low income, and even harder still if you rely on social services. Eating healthy is a luxury because you can afford to do so.
I hear you, but rice, beans, some frozen or canned veg cooked in a crock pot can translate into affordable and healthy soups, chilis, and stews that are ready when you walk in the door.
@@Camelliavintage I think that many people straight up just don't know how to cook. I mean how to balance flavors and season things and make food you actually like. Doesnt help that classes like Home Ec. were removed from school so kids have to rely on these skills being passed down.
This has nothing to do with poverty, poor people eat healthier than rich people across the globe and historically too. Almost all the protein you can get in a salad comes canned, beans and lentils, or easily cooked meats, people have been eating vegetables since the beginning of time without refrigeration, having to go shopping twice a week for 15 minutes is a non issue.
Crazy how in my parents country a bowl of vegetables is poor people food but McDonalds is a luxury.

Salads & healthy diets I think is strongly correlated with the economy. When economic downturn hits more people will turn to unhealthy comfort food especially if you don’t need to or can’t meet people.
When i was young there was a salad store in my country called "Salad Days", it was ahead of its time. It had a good run but i think they'll do better nowadays.
I'm from California and I've literally never heard of any of these chains.
