Thank-you for doing this. I have been wracking my brain to figure out how to make PBN's not look so 1950's kitsch! I knew blending and a ton of additional detail was the answer, it was just really nice to see it done. And I really like that you completely left the farm and did the leaves free form.
I just picked up a paint by number kit and your video was a great help. I haven't done a PBN kit since I was a kid and I'm really looking forward to painting it. It was a pleasure to watch you paint. Thanks again. Frank Masullo
Thank goodness I found your video! Im a beginner and found this painting and thought it would be a nice gift for my mother as well. I had no idea how to blend the background and mix the paints to get the right colors! THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video!!
I have never done one of these but I sure would love to find the one you’re doing you truly know how to paint that is gorgeous it looks natural very artistic thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for sharing this! I know now that my experience will be more fun and my results a 100 times better than if I followed the poorly written directions that came with my paint-by-number.
This is truly beautiful! It turned out so well and you are a fantastic artist. I am about to start my second PBN, but I have a lot to learn. Could you please do another one and add it to your page? You are great!
Enjoyed very much! I'm just getting into paint by numbers and don't want them looking like so. Your tutorial gave me some good tips. I had no idea you could blend with water on the edges! Cool!
Thanks! You can blend with water, just don't use too much, as you want the acrylic molecules to be able to bond together and with the surface canvas like it's supposed to.....too much water can interfere with that process ;)
Wow you did awesome that is so real looking I sure hope and pray I can do good paining I haven’t got one yet I would love to know where you got the chickadee paining
There are mediums you can buy at the craft store specifically made to thin, increase blendabilty, or increase dry time for acrylic. Much better than water which as you mentioned can break down the paint. Also be very careful mixing large quantities, sometimes it's difficult to judge how much you need vs how much is provided. I find it best to brush mix as I go. You can always mix up a bit more but it's a bear to try to find or mix a perfect match once you are half through and run out of the base colors. If you find you have issues needing more paint it's easiest to pick up a regular sized bottle of comparable color craft paint and use it from the beginning.
The problem is and maybe I should have looked for paint by numbers for beginners. I respect your talent as my sister taught art for 32 years and is in her own right very good (at EVERYTHING unfortunately) :-) I did a very good PBN that I did by the very number and has Always hung in my mothers home going on 30 years....yet I digress. I you have a video for us lowly beginners I would love to watch it. I'm in the vary early stages of something that makes my hands not as still but I still want to try.
David, you can do it....I've found even the beginner PBN and kids ones appear to be very complex, but just pick a small one, kids if you have to, and get the feel for it, seriously there is nothing better than practice and once you do one you'll be so proud of yourself you will run right out and buy one that's a little harder. Go try it David I know you can do it!
It would nice if this acrylic paint would stay the wet longer. . . I see it as a challenge in blending on PBN as some call it. It's sure a shorter name for paint by number. Sounds more sapphisscared. Thank you for sharing your abilities.
Absolutely beautiful! I have never painted and I really want to do one. Any suggestions? I want to do a small one. Not spend too much since this is my first one that I will be doing. Thank you for sharing this beautiful art. I hope your mama is enjoying this beautiful piece of art. 💕💐🌺🌹
doone shed loads of these, not flowers mainly sailing ships & naval battles ..well hard...but as it says on the box " remember YOU are the artist, once put a light grey on a leapords belly by mistake..looked even better after dried..one thing was I like to clear varnish over dried picture...wow..best o luck...
Thank you for the easy tutorial. I'm doing my first painting. Paint by number. I was wondering how long to wait for the colors to dry and should you start with light colors and go to dark?
There is no rule, it’s what’s easier for your brain to wrap around. But, usually in acrylics, it’s dark to light, highlights in White go on last. These paints dry really quickly, but you don’t have to wait for them to dry....in fact, that’s the challenge with acrylics, is getting them to blend because they dry so quickly.....Good luck, you can do it!
The dimensions paint kit I got had paint pots with clumpy paint. It was not dried out, it is just very clumpy. Did you experience that problem and if so, what did you do to get rid of the clumps?
Thank you so much for this video. This is my very first PBN. I wish I had seen this video earlier because I'm about 3/4 of the way finished. My biggest problem when I look at it is the background colors don't blend. Can you give me any tips on what to do to blend them now that they have already dried? Thank you!
Dear Anddrea, you video is very helpful for me since I'm just starting acrylic painting by numbers. I bought a few really nice painting by number but I have not started yet. I'm scared to do a bad painting so I wil practice on a smaller one. From what I understand, should I prepare all the color that have to be mixed before I start. I also notice that you started by doing all around and finish with the birds. Is that the way to make a painting by numbers. And finally, I wanted to know how long did it take you to do this really nice painting of the Chickadees and Lilacs. Thank you so much for replying to me. Manon from Quebec Canada.
Sorry this is to out of league for me it's still amazing and fab.i can barely paint the easy ones let alone this amazing masterpeice I am a subscriber good luck in the future 😃😜 I am amazed by this
Thank you! You'd be surprised though at what you can accomplish when you just try it. I say go for it.....I bet yours will look amazing (it's more of a patience thing I think...) ;)
I get mine from Amazon, but you can also Google paint by numbers and several sites will pop up. Some come folded (Amazon), which you have to iron to remove the creases, but other sites come rolled.
Just an idea and I haven't tried it so it might not work but If you are unsure and want to practice then you could try to either scan the main picture or the paper copy and print off some practice sheets for your own use . I don't think a copy place would print them as there is copyright issues but if you're desperate you could ask . Just remember to use decent art paper.
Too complicated but I am an artist who likes to do my own thing. Painting by numbers would be great for people who don't want to mess up when they paint if they have the patience to do this process.
Andrea, l really like this chickadee painting of I am a long time fine arrts and a career in graphic design. I'm 77 years young. I haven't painted for some do to life's issues. I thought I would try paint by number. I thought I would be down grading my artist ability. . . Far from the truth. . . I add my own detailing and blending. I make it my pin. Artist use grids, tracing paper, why not paint by number. Yes?
I got my paining today on chickadee and Lila I have a question I hope you know I got my paining today on chickadee and Lila I have a question I hope you know but my problem is mine is a canvas not cardboard so I’m hoping I can iron the back of it because it’s wrinkled I probably will have to get a frame to stretch it I realize yours is cardboard I wish mine was but I did not know it was a canvas I know now if you have any tips please let me know
Hi Sheila, yes I do have some suggestions for you. I’m actually working on a paint by numbers right now the same as you describe, I was sent five of them from a company and they are all on canvas and I’m going to post a video of me painting it and putting it on the frame they sell, but I don’t think the frame part will be for quite a while. But look for my existing video regarding straightening out creases in a canvas. What I would do, is spritz the back with water and then take a blowdryer to it to flatten it out. You could also spritz the back with water lightly and then put heavy books on it to let it dry, that’s what I do with my watercolour papers. Regarding painting on the canvas, it is just as easy as painting on the board although you cannot prop it up but I just painted flat on the desk which is fine. I wish you good luck, I’m sure you will do absolutely fine!
O.M.G., I've seen this PBN around and I love those chunky little birds so much. Beautiful job.
The most artistic paint by numbers I have ever seen. Well done!
I am glad you mentioned varnishing
I also paint with acrylics but starting my journey with pbn

The dimensions paint kit I got had paint pots with clumpy paint. It was not dried out, it is just very clumpy. Did you experience that problem and if so, what did you do to get rid of the clumps?
What colours are the shaded parts? The instruction sheet we got has not pot numbers for the two shaded sections on the canvas (black and grey).

Very nice! I am just getting into paint by numbers and love it so far. I'm curious as to how long it took you to finish the painting?
Oh, man....I can't remember now, but I think I did it in 3 or 4 sittings, 2 or 3 hours each? Argh, I don't know.....lol
Hey Andi this is a great video and an amazing painting! I was wondering if I could use the video as an instructional or example video on my webpage?
Hi Ruben, you can use it if you send me a link and if you somehow mention/link my channel for people to find if they would like....Thanks!
