    Great vid, thank you for taking the time to delve into it. Your video shows that whilst the essence of paint by numbers will get you the approximation of an image, in some areas you can go off piste and add shading, blending and add highlights where you see fit, which might be a good way to give novice painters (like me) a bit of experience and confidence in playing with the paint and seeing what happens.

    I’m currently on my first ever paint by number even as a child I never could do them. It’s a royal langnickle ocean one and it is tough. I’ve gathered quite the collection of different paints and for some reason have been terrified to use colors it didn’t come w in fear of ruining it. After seeing this video I’m going to do it and put my own spin on not only colors but also some of the color placement, specifically with the coral reefs and water. Thank you for making this.!

      The way I see it, the numbers are the template, and when it's filled in, ad can see the bigger picture and fill in new details as we please

    I think you are on to something. I agree with you.What I learn to do is too, see to over ride the numbers with the paint in a way.?

    You're right, it doesn't teach you to paint but it allows those of us with no artistic talent whatsoever to feel like we can do something artsy. I liked this video.

    Does it have to be perfect? I feel like art can be anything u want it to be. Sometimes I overthink these things and end up messing up. I just wanted to ask if my painting has to look like the cover . Im basically a beginner to painting but not drawing. Im use to drawing .

    great video! It's been YEARS since I painted, and don't have any of the kit anymore. I've been eyeing some of the lovely adult paint by number canvases, as they come with paints and brushes. Wondered though if there would be any room for self expression! Your video has convinced me to give it a go! Cheers!

    I did paint by number 50+ yrs ago when I was a kid. They have come a long way. I have since been a pro photographer, wanting to eventually try painting some of my photos. But thought I'd try paint by number to break the ice a little in my mind, just to get the hang of mixing colors and working with the canvas on a couple. Then I can move toward working on my own work, hopefully. Thanks for the input on mixing and making the work your own. It is very helpful.

      Thanks! That sounds great! The best advice I can give when you attempt your own paintings is no matter how experienced the painter is, a painting will always look terrible to start with, so don't be discouraged by it. It's patience and care that turns it into something beautiful!

      Same. That's why this time I ordered from this other company where all the colors are already mixed the way you need them and you just paint the canvas. No paint mixing needed. Can't wait for it to finally arrive

    So you wet your brush before painting, and after each color, do you put the brush in water before everytime you get more paint for a color?

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  4 роки тому

      It just depends on how much you want the paint to flow off the brush, so if you start struggling to get a couple of strokes onto the canvas before needing more paint, you probably need to wet the brush again. Although too much water can make the paint watery and transparent so there is a balance!

    • @elleemann
      @elleemann 4 роки тому

      Using product called Flow aid helps a lot. The paint spreads much more easily without diluting the paint and making it too transparent. Amazon sells it

      There is a product called Gesso...clear Gesso...to use on PBN to allow canvas/board be more receptive to paint...ie have more tooth.

    Never never never never never shake your paints. You will find in general that paint by number plates are connected by a very thin rod and sometimes they can mix so I repeat never shake your paints. What do I do is use coloured matchsticks to stir them very gently and I will take a tiny dots of the beginning of that match dick and paint with that but never shake them bad advice

    Quick question, I’d like to sell my paint by number paintings ( the colorful animals ones) and I have no idea how to price it, any advice? Cost is : frame : $10 + painting kit ~$15 = $25 THANKS SOO MUCH!!

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  4 роки тому

      Hi, pricing any kind of art is such a tricky thing as there is no right or wrong price, it's just what people are willing to pay! I guess the best advice is to simply price it at a point you are happy with, but the prices you mentioned above do seem reasonable. If you Google "how should I price my art" or words to that effect you won't get a straight answer, but you will see what a common question it is and how difficult it is to answer :p

    One feedback, it would be easier to analyse what you've painted if you could actually hold it still and not flip/tilt it to yourself non stop lol

    Regarding teaching to actually paint using a step by step instructional method.. decorative painters decades ago were doing exactly that, it was an entire industry. You would get a pattern with specific instructions on exactly what color to use, where, and in what way. The old public broadcasting shows are an example.. Bob Ross, Sue Scheewee, Terry Madden, etc. We even had magazines devoted to it with multiple projects every issue... none of which exist anymore. After a while it was easy to do your own work. I don't even know if you can still get those kind of materials, but google and give it a shot. Techniques ranged from landscapes, to very realistic florals and animals, to stroke work and folk art. Once upon a time (about twenty years ago) I found a form of watercolor by numbers which utilized multiple stencil sheets.. each would be applied to the surface in order and the paint would layer to create depth and dimension. They turned out really well surprisingly. I can find no proof those ever existed lol, but I have a couple on my walls still to this day so they did.

    I do not think that you will learn how to draw by doing painting by numbers. I love crafts and paint in genral but I do not know how to draw so I paint by numbers which will give me a much better result than if i draw free hand. Well done

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately drawing is one of those things that simply takes a lot of practice to get better at, and you might spend the first 100 hours unhappy with the results! The upside is all you need is a pencil and a scrap of paper, so I would always recommend practicing every now and then. Even it its just rough forms rather than nice polished pieces, its such a useful and transferable skill to have in your arsenal!

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 4 роки тому +2

      You don't have to draw to paint. Many professional artists work from photos as reference, resizing and transferring to a surface as needed.

    Those particular kits are garbage. Just terrible. Try a nice Dimensions/Paintworks or if you don't mind the price a Schipper. What you see on the box is what you get (they come in a variety of difficulty levels) and the quality of the paint is a thousand times better. Plaid also made beautiful kits (including Thomas Kincade exclusives) but unfortunately they are no longer producing them.. you can still find some occasionally though left in the market. Be warned regarding the knock off brands.. they steal from artists and legitimate companies.

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  4 роки тому +7

      I must admit maybe I was a bit harsh in choosing a cheap kit, no doubt you get what you pay for! I am actually working on making my own kits at the moment...a cross between painting by numbers and a more in-depth tutorial.. still work in progress but I am hopefully going to be making an announcement in an upcoming video, I just need to work the finer details out! FIngers crossed!

      @@CaryJacobsArt sounds intriguing, will sub to see what you come up with. I used to paint quite a bit over the years but my current life circumstances leave me with a shortage of time and I've fallen back on PBN's as a convenient alternative that I can start and stop at a moments notice... but still scratch that artistic itch. I typically paint them as they come, then overpaint/blend/detail, so they are substantially more "finished" by the time I'm through. People who see them have no clue they are a paint by number. I'm currently working on this one which I snatched up while they were still on the market. plaidonline.com/products/plaid-paint-by-number-thomas-kinkade-victoria

    That's also just a bad kit. There are some kits that are way better. But I'm not an artist and I have no interest in really developing any real skill. Paint by numbers is easy and the results are good enough for me.

    • @CaryJacobsArt
      @CaryJacobsArt  4 роки тому +1
