slight correction on your explanation at the beginning- Loiusoix didn't transport people to another world- he transported people 5 years into the future, which is why the ARR takes place 5 years after 1.0.

@@weaponsci The reason why the entire continent wasn't nuked into oblivion by the fall of Dalamud (and Bahaumt's freedom) is hidden behind the game's first set of raids, the Binding Coils of Bahamut. Loiusoix tried to safeguard the future of Eorzea by sending the Warriors of Light into the future, away from the impending destruction. Those Warrior of Lights are all the 1.0 players, who got a special cutscene opening in ARR, one where they appear in a pillar of light. They also get a special thank you during the credits of the ARR story.

8:02 There's actually in game.lore about the lack of the spell naming. It's in the Great Gubal Library dungeon in HW. It explains that the speed at which magic was progressing in the Mhach and Amdapouran society that they were find spells that were even stronger then -aga spells. So they had to debate what to name it. But couldn't come to a consensus and decided to just adopt a number system for simplicity.

I just chalk it up to the dev team learning how to MMO as they went. Ff14 is at its worst when it tries to be a 'tick the quest boxes' kinda thing rather than focusing on its narrative and building objectives around that. Later on they get much, much better at it.

@@weaponsci ARR was very much a WoW clone with tons of stupid fetch quests, especially post ARR. The story and gameplay improve DRASTICALLY with every expansion.
You will be rewarded if you keep going. Also, even though it's boring, the ARR story becomes quite important later on. They pull small plot points from ARR 10 years ago even in the current endgame and tie them back into the main story in a major way.
The story basically just takes its time and starts out slow for a massive pay off later rather than the typical ADD approach of giving a bunch of exciting stuff up front.

I will say that while A Realm Reborn is slow because it focuses a lot on worldbuilding -- all of that is paid off very VERY majorly in later expansions, so its almost vital that the game keep that slow initial pace, which can be a turn off for people, but its absolutely worth it later on.
On your comment about the -ra, -ga, and -ja level spell suffixes: The localization team actually made the intentional choice to stay away from them. In the Japanese version of the game, the spells do have their appropriate suffixes, but the EN localization team felt that if people familiar with Final Fantasy came into ARR and those were in place, they would incorrectly assume that something like Curaga would automatically be the best spell to use when trying to heal a party member - which isn't the case, due to how the spells are designed for the MMO format.
Cure III / Curaga is actually a targeted Area of Effect heal that is definitely powerful for partywide healing, but it has a small radius that requires the party to be grouped together to maximize its effectiveness, and has a HUGE MP cost to offset that. If you use Cure III on a single party member, you're just going to be wasting MP and not getting a good heal out of it because Cure II is a more effective single target healing spell that has better MP economy.
The same goes for Fire, Fire II, and Fire III on Black Mage. Fire III is powerful but you only want to use it to set up your Astral Fire stacks because of its longer cast time + MP cost and then only use it again whenever you get your Firestarter proc from casting Fire (since it'll be free and insta-cast). Fire meanwhile is your main go to damage spell, and Fire II is your main Area of Effect damage spell. Calling them Fire, Fira, and Firaga might make seasoned FF fans incorrectly believe they should always be using the -ga level spell no matter what.

Relic Weapons are glowy but the minute the next expansion arrives they are outclassed by even the earliest subsequent weapons. Each expansion has a Relic weapon series, largely there as an optional grindfest to keep ppl busy during the stretch to the next expansion.
Lot of tidbits in ARR are placers put there that won't really come into action until a number of expansions later, like Yugiri.

There not outclassed that early. Assuming you have the Best Gear at the End of an Expansion it will be replaced usually around the lvl x5 Dungeon. With ShB the max Ilvl was 530. The lvl 83 Dungeon had ilvl 530 loot (with usually much worse Substats) and the 85 Dungeon was the first Dungeon with noticable better Gear.

Slight correction - Eorzea is not a set of continents. It is a "realm" that includes the continent of Aldenard and the surrounding islands (largest of which is Vylbrand).
You can imagine it as Eorzea being politico-social name of the area, while Aldenard is the geological location.
The other of the Three Great Continents - Othard and Islabard - are not part of the Eorzean realm.
The game eventually takes place outside of Eorzea - in the Far East belonging to the continent of Othard and eventually also in Islabard, which is the continent where the Garlean Empire originated from.

Playing through the Rogue class quests is a treat as it was written by the writer of the expansion and is like a small window into the quality story telling that is waiting for you.
Also the crafting jobs have their own story lines. Alchemist's plot is actually great. Fishing has its own raid. In which you fish.
As for the Moogle King. Its from 1.0. They were gonna release Leviathan as a boss, but Japan was hit by a tsunami, so they decided to go with king Moogle Mog. People really like it. Also the hard version of the fight is really fun to figure out. There is a great Noclip documentary that interviews the creators and gives a great overview on the behind the scenes events.
And you are right about the first Relic weapon. Its a left over from ye olden times and the only people that have them are veterans and crazy people.

Most people will agree that ARR is the slog you have to get through in oroder to play the more fun parts, and I agree. If you like what was at the very end of ARR, then it only gets better. There will still be times where you have to do 'chores' but they're usually during done at more logical times in the story rather than when a Primal is about to wreck your shit. Also, the payoffs tend to be a lot more awesome and the chores are more for world building.
Crystal Tower is not representative of all 25-man content. If you think things will just die and you can ignore mechanics, the first Heavensward 25-man will challenge that assumption and the second will destroy it. However, they're all optional after Crystal Tower, so I can see why they aren't interested in making those more of a challenge.

ARR is definately the weakest point in the storytelling but it does set a lot of important foundations for the saga that follows. In their defence they didn't have much time to iterate on the story flow. They produced ARR in about half the time it usually takes to build an MMO and they were still trying to improve and provide content for the 1.0 version while they were doing that. As others have said, if you appreciated the Trails games, you will appreciate the depth and complexity of the story as it plays out. FF14 definately has slow burn periods but almost always there is eventually a pay out that makes the slow build worth it and sometimes in ways that are suprising.
It is interesting to hear the perspective of someone coming to FF14 from a non MMO perspective as many content creators that tried FF14 in recent times come from other MMO backgrounds.

They are currently updating the dungeons in later expansions with this system with every major patch .... and by the final patch of endwalker all dungeons related to the main story will be playable solo with a group of NPCs ... the only mandatory multiplayer content will be the 8man trials - boss fights these are sown around every few levels in later parts of the story ... and the Crystal Tower Alliance raid a 24 man instance ...

Yeah ARR is definitely a mixed bag when it comes to story and a big reason why the community doesn't want people to pass up on the story is because the payoff for a lot of plot points that show up in ARR is immense in the later expansions. Fortunately, Heavensward and beyond are leagues better.

I highly suggest completing the Coils, it helps to explain some clarification as to what happened during that fateful battle at Cartineau. As well as provide a big ol' lore bomb~
The subsequent 8-man raids for each expansion afterwards are also just as intriguing and interesting story-wise. Also- I recommend completing the 24-man raid stories for the expansions, too. Those are fun! 😁
I do hope you make a video regarding your opinions of Heavensward, I'd be interested in seeing and hearing your thoughts. Also to see if you're hyped for Stormblood 😉

As a guy who started the free trial with no MMO experience in October 2021, my thoughts on the game:
Free trial - If this game's trial wasn't so generous, I wouldn't have attempted it in the first place... and I DEFINITELY would not have bought it, as I'd have stopped around the time of Good King Moggle Mog.
Story - ARR is AWFUL until you hit the Ul'dah refugee stuff, which, as you said, REALLY ramps up. Although ARR lays A LOT of great groundwork for the rest of the game in lore and character work, the core narrative is horribly paced and those characters I would come to love start off annoying the heck out of me. It is best to think of the story as a long-running TV show: it has wonderful high points and horrible low points, and the first season is pretty bad... but once it connects, the highs are so high that even a bad season or episode won't ruin it. My opinions of the highs and lows are very different from those of other people (I am the one person in the world that doesn't like Shadowbringers and considers a quest about negotiating a trade agreement to be the best thing in the game), but everyone will find something to like.
Gameplay - I thought it was really awful in ARR. As SCH main, I was stuck mainly pressing one button (healers don't have attack rotations) and the power creep has made dodging mechanics at level 50 or below kind of pointless. But the fights get more complex as you go, and by the time you reach Endwalker you'll have some pretty gnarly stuff in even the easiest content, and I fell in love with the almost rhythm game style dodge mechanics (which I gather is pretty normal for MMOs, but this is fresh for me). It is seriously addictive, wildly fun stuff.
Community - This is my first social game of any sort. People went out of their way to help me when I was on free trial, but being unable to send tells made communication difficult. I still mostly play single player, but I recently joined a free company and have had a lot of fun doing silly things like going to Halloween parties or taking pictures with Santa. (He's a hrothgar. Not many people know that.) The community is always very nice and happy to help, and I've had a lot of fun being a goof and just playing around with people, or helping newbies out in early game content. Some say that there is a "fake positivity" to the game, but sometimes I've found that it is enjoyable to just hand a minion to a newb or give them some gil and wish them luck, and that sort of mindset seems to be something that extends to the player base as a whole. I'm no stranger to being a toxic internet jerk myself, but this game and the people in it make me want to be nice, and I don't consider this to be "fake," but rather something that the players and devs have engineered to make their own time as enjoyable as possible. Even in rough raids, most people are kind and help out with tips and team communication in between wipes.
In no other game would you come to the foot of a mountain atop which stands one of the main villains of the current story and find a troupe of dancers in platinum gold shorts and tank tops performing before your brush with destiny. Little things like that are stamped indelibly into my mind as part of the story, as that is how I experienced it. And little things like that are not possible in a single player game, so I appreciate the opportunities the MMO medium affords.
Side content: There is sooooooo much and I've barely scratched most of it. Sidequests (and sidequests and sidequests and sidequests), hunts, PVP, chocobo racing, crafting, gathering, harder difficulty versions of trials and raids, lots and lots of unlockable bosses and raids in their own sidequests (many of which are among the high points of the game storywise), sightseeing - a lot of it I haven't touched at all, and that's okay. The game is a theme park with lots of attractions, and I'm enjoying the ride.
All in all, this has become arguably my favorite video game. The main content is engaging on both the story and gameplay levels, and there is a lot to do if you just want to take it easy as well.

19:27 It's really just the Crystal Tower that's super easy (and the HW alliance raids are pretty easy to an extent too). The alliance raids from Stormblood and onwards are a considerable ramp-up in difficulty in comparison to the ARR and HW alliance raids.
30:20 the relic weapons are mostly collected for glamour purposes (since they are usually the best-looking weapons by far) and you can usually impress people by showing off the final stage relics. People like Desperius FFXIV have done video showcases of each relic weapon stage from the base game and the expansions, so that you can see what the relics look like and decide if you want to do the grind for those weapons or not. It's worth noting that the ARR relics have the longest grind of all the relics, so don't feel discouraged if the ARR relic grind seems excessive; the other relic grinds aren't so bad.

The issues in 1.0 weren't bugs I think - it was the play style. There wasn't even auto attack which was pretty standard in MMO's at the time. I remember trying it and having to go to a spot and "start" a quest before mobs would appear or something (very similar to another system in ARR lower levels). It was just too weird coming from LOTRO and WoW. Then the free trial in 1.0 was only a few hours I think (or maybe 10 levels - which only equated to a few hours). Even in this period most new MMO's would give people to level 20, invite them to a "free beta" a couple of months before release, or even a whole weekend for free, mainly because they were all going up against the behemoth of WoW. The shorter period also meant people didn't have enough time to get accustomed to a different system - having a different system is okay, but most games would give players plenty of free time to try it out first. So SE pretty much did the opposite and assumed that people would flock to it from other MMO's solely based on the franchise, but MMO players are a bit different.

As a note on PvP. Its fun, but generally pretty casual. Crystal Conflict is nice 5-8 minute bursts of adrenaline. Sometimes a little shorter, sometimes a little longer, but generally short enough that you get your fun; but not long enough that you're stuck in a one sided match and can't move on. Frontlines are another beast entirely. When you first go into them it will feel like a Chaotic Mass. 3 Teams of 24 players, very objectives based. But the more you play, the more you realize that upping your chances of winning has more to do with Map Awareness and competent shot callers + Push/Pull dynamics than anything else. Fighting over nothing will earn you nothing. Overextending will only get you pinched. Ignoring the front runner to fixate on the other team you have early match bad blood with will just enhance the Frontrunner's lead. Haven't messed with the third mode Rival Wings all that much myself tbh.

I've now been aykng for a year and definitely shared your view on the ARR story. It really is slow and whilst it's great world building, that just isn't my bag. I really struggled with the story up until around about level 40 and then once the patch quests start setting up HW, it was more interesting.
The story definitely gets better, although I'm not the huge fan of it that a large part of the community is. I think it's better in hindsight. Once you finish an expansion and look back on it, the main plot and big events stand out and they are very good. Whilst actually doing it though.... Lot of fetching and dialogue and parts of each expansion do feel pretty grindy and like filler content. Saying that, it's well worth experiencing and I'd say that I'm really, really not a narrative/story focused player so my opinion needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
The world, jobs, content and characters though.... It's what has kept me completely hooked for 12 solid months. This is easily my favourite ever game and that's with me only getting about half the enjoyment from the story that a majority of others do. I don't think the story is all that essential to loving the game. I'm almost done levelling all the jobs to 90 and I love the job diversity and feel to them all. There isn't a job I don't like, though I'm luke warm on melee dps as a role. There's so, so much content, covering such a variety of tastes that you can play 14 in a ton of different ways, at a ton of different paces and get your own enjoyment and experience from it.
Always love to see new player experiences though, so I look forward to more of your videos, this was a really good watch 👍

ARR is a lot of world building, so except for peoples like me who enjoy pure or nigh pure world building it's not going to be as enjoyable of a story part as whatever follows (since what follows will use that world building to actually have a more highly paced story). That being said I still think that they should do something about the crappy parts with the company of heroes before Titan, and the silly part with the crystal needed for the ship.
For the whole "in 24 men raids everything die so fast you don't see the mechanics", it's only true for those mandatory 3. All the 24 raids you'll see later are way, way more enjoyable. You actually see and have to do mechanics; but it's not tuned hard so even if you fail the rest of the raid will usually not wipe. So you get to learn and enjoy the mechanics, the epicness of them, the fantastic music and so on, while not feeling bad or responsible for screwing up, since you'll just get rezzed and carry on. Until you're the one carrying newer players =).

Rather unfortunate about the spell names, since they have the proper FF suffixes in all non ENG language clients, so they are in the game you just have to be able to read Japanese, German or French. I really wish they'd add a toggle for the ENG client or replace it so that there is parity across all clients, it really helps in memorizing boss moves at a glance instead of having to make sure you didn't misread that II for a III mid combat.
Nice vid, was fun to watch and glad you're enjoying your time in Eorzea. Something to help out with the relic weapon quest, there's a book section that has you do specific Fates in certain zones, when you get to that part, just remember players are now able to visit other servers on their data center/cluster and being able to hop to different versions of those maps will make the FATE hunting for those books go by much quicker. In any case, hope you continue to enjoy the ride.

No chocobos etc or any way to buy from a mb, we literally had to line our retainers up in wards then go look and click them all to find items we wanted to buy from other players.. any maint knocked them all out, any poor soul at work had no chance of getting a spot, so they couldn't see on the markets, but we did have a bag on our head, maybe 10 slots, I don't recall. I played until the starting point of shadowbringers, the story is fine for a MMO but nothing special imo, gameplay wise once you learn your rotation it is pretty much on autopilot, the bosses which are praised are just like learning a dance nothing too demanding and even in higher difficulties everyone can do them if they try, lastly pvp was horrendous and this is ultimately why i stopped playing.
