On 6th December 2020 we lost somebody special. This is the story of Maidy Maidy, who created the blog that became the TV show Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light.

Yoshi-P's blog post about him is so touching. Especially this last paragraph.....
"Once time passes, I'm sure there will be a day when I can see him again. When that happens, I'm sure he'll find me with a sprout on my head, not knowing my right from my left, and reach his hand out to me with allies he found on the other side, saying: "Oh, you must be a newcomer! It's okay, it's lots of fun over on this side, too. Let's go adventuring together!" And in that hand, will be the Nu Gundam."

Maidy is also the reason why it almost broke YoshiP to find out that another one of his close friends, Soken, had cancer. He just lost Maidy to cancer and back then, Soken was diagnosed with it too. That's why he couldn't stop crying during fanfest when Soken announced that his cancer was in remission.

@@KamenRiderRaiden Yeah, cancer sucks. The day a cure is found can't come fast enough. Cancer has taken so many people from all of us. Friends, family, pets, acquaintances....cancer doesn't care. But, while cancer may have claimed their lives, it will never claim the memories and time we had shared with those lost loved ones. And someday, when our own time has come, we will meet them again, and like Yoshi-P himself remarked in his post responding to Maidy's passing, when that day finally comes, we will be the ones with a sprout on our head, as they guide us into our new life.
I can't even imagine how heavy Yoshi's heart must have been in that time, carrying the burden alone of Soken's condition. Knowing that he'd already lost one friend doubling the fear of losing another. I'm so glad Soken is in remission. I'm so sad for losing Maidy. Cancer fucking sucks.
He would have loved Endwalker... Rest in peace, Maidy.
His body may be gone, but his soul and memory lives on, and in that sense you could say that he has achieved a form of immortality. He will live on in all of the people he has touched, directly or indirectly, and they in turn will pass on his memory, his light, to others. In a way, you could say that we all have a bit of Maidy in us, cheering us on, guiding us, and just savoring the journey alongside us. I may not have had a personal connection to him, but in the words of our Eorzean selves: *"For those we have lost, for those we can yet save."* Rest easy, Maidy. We'll keep that torch you kept lit going strong, and pass that torch on to newer and newer generations of Sprouts....to newer generations of Warriors of Light & Darkness.
I'm so gutted he didn't get to see the end of the Hydaelyn saga :(
Maidys character also appeared on offical artwork after their passing.
There is a female Miqote Mnk on the Isetan collaboration key art that resembles his player character.

The proper order of things is supposed to be for the child to outlive the parent, so when the reverse happens it's that much worse. That's precisely what happened with my great-grandmother & my grandfather, she outlived her own son by about a decade, with her passing shortly after reaching the age of 100, and him having passed a decade earlier to cancer in his 60s.

Their passion for Gundam was also indirectly the inspiration for how Sage ended up with nouliths (fin funnels, bits, fangs, etc). Thank you for this video and sharing his story
OMG. I had no clue. Dad of light was one of the shows that got me hooked on FFXIV and now here I am. Crying like an idiot on my desk at work. May he walk on the light of the cristal ❤️
I think the saddest thing about this is that Maidy never got to experience Endwalker, he would've loved it
I didn't know that Maidy was a real player until now. This...This is why I play FFXIV. For people like him, for stories like this. And when I started, I met so many people who were like Maidy. Kind and generous, and carrying on his spirit. I hope that wherever he is, he's not only building Gundam kits, but having just as grand of an adventure as he had in Eorzea, and the land of the living. Rest in peace, Maidy, and may you ever walk in the light of the crystal

I was blessed with meeting Maidy in game once and he took a picture with me, that I will treasure. I was also able to meet his father and some members of Giovinezza. I'll never forget his kindness to me and his love for the game he shared with everyone he could.

I lost someone back in 2018. His name was Serenold Kardon. He quit XIV back in 2015-16, he never did get past heavensward, but all the same. He was the person who got me into XIV. He was also the person that paid for my sub for over two years. And too this day I still log in and play. He was like a brother to me. He always looked out for me. We fought now and then, but we never stayed mad for long. XIV was something we shared a love for. And I hope, wherever he is now, he's watching me continue the adventure that he got me started on.

Dad of Light was a fantastic show and its so touching how this story reached so many ppl. But its not only Maidy who passed away. Also the actor of the dad in the series passed away some years ago :C
I had no idea Maidy was a real person, I loved that show, it makes it more poignant. I met my rl partner in my FC, when we married for the goodies as friends it became something more. four years later we have lived together for two years

To illustrate, plenty of people enjoy Marvel movies - But if you want to argue from that that the story of Marvel movies is good, all you'll be met with is a cacophony of laughter as people rightfully mock you.
TL;DR - You liking something doesn't make it good.

I had seen Dad of Light, but had no idea it was a true story... that's... simultaneously wholesome and tragic.

after watching this the first thing that came to my mind was yoshi p during digital fanfest when soken came up to give his speech about his fight with cancer, and seeing how it affected yoshi p. after hearing this story and yoshi p already having lost one good friend to cancer i can only imagine how everything with soken would have scared him, i feel like that whole thing is re contextualized after watching this
Mother Hydaelyn has called a soul home, I hope he rests easy knowing how loved and appreciated he still is.

Maidy and Dad of Light were what got me to finally buckle down and play FFXIV in the first place. Though I started after he had already passed, he means a lot to me.
I'm sure that would have pleased Maidy immensely.
I've loved every moment I've spent in FF XIV, and though I am currently taking a break from the game, I fully intend to return. I happen to play on the Diabolos server, and I main RDM (I just love the versatility and being able to basically save an entire run if the actual healers ever go down, where I'm basically a walking "Oh Shit!" button).
One of my favorite moments in FF XIV was during a run of Orbonne Monastery (my favorite 24-man Raid). We were fighting Ultima and we had just gotten to the brief "calm" just before Ruination started (giving about 15-20 seconds to get into the barrier). Alliances B & C were basically fine at that point, having at most one person down (who were promptly revived), but Alliance A (my Alliance) got absolutely *DECIMATED* as only two of us were left standing (myself as a RDM and our BRD). Within that brief bit of "downtime" I was able to revive our Tank, both Healers, and two of our 3 DPS in time for us to all get into the barrier for Ruination, and then during Ruination I got our final member (our NIN) back on their feet. As soon as Ruination was over, Alliance chat started lighting up with remarks from my teammates like "Red Mage Best Job" and "I think you mean rez mage". I even got 5 Commendations for my efforts once the run was over. Getting that kind of praise and recognition just felt so damn good!
I also always try to help other players who need it, particularly new players & Sprouts, and in the event that I can't help them for whatever reason (like if I'm about to log off and I just can't stay for much longer), I will at least ask people in my FC if they could help that person out in my stead (and my FC mates are friendly and nice enough that someone is pretty much certain to be willing to help).
Spending time with his father was so important to him, he faked being a mentor to do it. How could one not feel something right there.
Having come in super late to FFXIV, i honestly had no clue about any of this.
It's really heartbreaking, but hopefully Maidy is enjoying his new adventure, wherever he may be.
I lost my dad to cancer when I was still pretty young, so of course the stories of Maidy (which I didn't even know before this video) and Soken always hit me hard. I swear, cancer always gets the brightest and most passionate of us...
I loved his story so much... when I first watched Dad of Light, I cried... and still I do today... That he passed away makes me even more sad, but also smile. He had a great life, he had a great heart. R.I.P. Maidy ♥ You will never be forgotten in this Legend XIV little Son of Light ♥♥
There’s many reasons we can lose people. Positive or negative reasons. But so long as we keep their memory, they will carry on.
Honestly, that’s something I’ve learned from this game. Those lost carry on beyond through the Echo, through our memories.
I have always loved Dad of Light because it always reminded me of when I started playing. Someone saw me struggling and helped me sort things out, and before I knew it, my family had grown.

This was really sweet. I had no clue who Maidy was, the name never came across anyone's lips. I just knew that someone had died in the FFXIV community that was beloved by many. Thank you for taking the time to tell his story.
Though this is a heartbreaking tale, Warriors of Light, remember words that Maidy himself would agree with.

I actually started playing because of the show. It pains me to find out that Maidy has passed on.
At least Maidy will always be remembered, and in a sense, they have achieved a form of immortality, as their presence in FF XIV will never fade.

I watched Dad of Light 2 and a half years ago. I cried like a baby, laughed like a clown, cheered like a fan, and loved like never before. Maidy was, for lack of any better words, a hero to his dad and an inspiration to us all. Maidy, may you ever walk in the Light.

I remember this series, it was so good.I had no idea it was based on a true story.... sad that he left this world sooner then he should have. he would have loved endwalker.... may he rest in peace.
I had no idea of this story till now. I'm so glad I now know about this incredible person and the love he spread in his life time and the feelings he left behind. I hope wherever you are Maidy, you'll have a grand time adventuring and may you ever walk in the light of the crystal.

I think that everyone who plays a on line game, who make close friendships with other players has experienced the lost of a friend. It's painful but also it was also a blessing because we might not have ever met this friend any other way except through a game. It was a blessing to get to know them and call them "friend".

Ah I didnt expect to cry again today but here we are.
This video hit hard reminders again of the past, I remember back when this was announced and I cried reading Yoshi-P memorial "To My Dear Friend and Comrade"
I talked about it with my dear friend who got me into the game after some teeth pulling of "I don't wanna play a subscription game!" but here we are...almost 5 years now.
We watched the TV show together cried about it and the movies it became something treasured just like the game for me after being introduced to it.
Last Month my friend past away suddenly with no warning and its been a struggle to walk down this new path without my best friend and to opening up to having new ones.
My he ever walk in the light with maidy too...I miss you.
Maidy's story and experiences have been so touching to me. It feels like I have a nostalgia and a deep love for both him and his father despite never having met any of them, nor even played with them. Hearing about his death was so saddening, but to think just how much one man has impacted his life, the game and our own lives even in little ways? That's a hell of a life in my eyes. If there is an afterlife, I do hope that he knows just how much he's given people joy.

Final Fantasy XIV is the only MMO I've played as long as I have and Eorzea is the one place I know I can always return to when I need to vent or just reconnect with friends. Farewell, Warrior of Light. You are truly one who is worthy of the title.
So glad this was in my feed today. I remember Maidy, and their blog, and they are still missed to this day by myself and many others. We didn't know Maidy personally. But from FFXI to FFXIV, I've known and lost many close friends, who had an affect on me and how I see the world. I keep playing FFXIV for myself, and for the friends I lost who can no longer carry on the journey. And every week I go to a certain grave not far from Camp Dragonhead, to sit and talk about my adventures, as if to tell all the friends I've lost that I still remember them, and to tell them I'm doing well. And that I'll carry on in their place. Till the day I join them. It's people like Maidy that helped make this community what it is today. To keep it alive.

I am so happy you put this together. Somebody did a video about Maidy after his passing and I go back to that sometimes, but the audio on it isn't great. I first learned about Maidy from an old article from years ago (I think it was on Anime News Network), about Dad of Light. After that I followed his story on translations (sometimes not very good ones), of his blog.
It would be nice if some of the streamers like Zepla or Quazli, or even Preach or Pyro watched this on their streams as I feel that in the time after Endwalker, Maidy's story is one that should be shared with the community.
For me, in particular after Endwalker, Maidy remains a person who epitomises the idea of seeking joy, even as darkness descends.

i just recently came across this video. reminds me of a best friend i use too play final fantasy 14 with. we where best friends we where brother's sadly we fought and moved on. I met a friend in xiv that was going through cancer as well. and safe to say they are finally in remission of being cancer free. this game means a lot to me even when covid hit i will miss all the friends i met that stop playing. But at the end of every person you meet in this game always a good one or bad one. we gotta remember the good memories as well.

An FC friend recommended I watch Dad of Light tonight. Through the series, I found out about Maidy, and then was heartbroken to find out he had passed. I'm in tears.

I've been playing FFXIV for almost 6 years now. I remember the whole reason that I even started playing was because I was watching netflix and came across Dad of Light. After it was over and I dried my eyes ;---; I promptly went to my steam account and subbed to XIV. It is literally due to that show, to Maidy that I even started playing. I was devastated to learn of his passing. Thank you Maidy for everything!

I remember this back on the forums a long time ago. Still hurts to read or hear about. You know, it’s stories and things like these that make me cautious to pursue my hobby with video games any further. Anyone over 25 can tell you the amount of games, memories, and experiences that have been shared only to and eventually rise, fall and fade. It’s truly a fickle feeling.
It’s true. Though it’s one of many reasons to love ffxiv. Ultimately enjoying and making our journey good one rather than fearing it’s inevitable end is a common refrain.
Thank you for telling Maidy’s story, people like him deserved to be remembered. He’s done so much for the community and it’s sad that there will be newcomers who don’t know him but his story lives on through the people who knew him.

RIP maidy, really didn't know this and it's really crazy he did so much with so little time, really glad he was with us though because of all he did for the game and community.
Damn, now I have a sad. These kinds of stories, and those about the players, make it so I fall in love with the game and the community even more as time goes by.

I started playing FFXIV because of the show. The idea of connecting to people made me quite happy and I have good memories from it, sadly after a couple of really bad experiences I quit.

It is possible to play "offline" today if you want. The story is wonderful and I guarantee it will captivate you.
As Naoki Yoshida himself has said several times, if you just want to enjoy this and then suspend the subscription to only come back when a new expansion is released, that's fine too.

I am a ffxiv player since the very beginning.....it is a game that brought so many people together...I am so thankful that I have this game in my life......and I am sure maidy is remembered by all his ffxiv friends, and one day they will all meet again
Oi, started 9 months ago and just stumbled upon this video. And all i can say really is.

I also wanted to meet Maidy after seeing this drama, so I started playing FF14 on the same server.I couldn't meet Maidy in the end, but when I was alone, I always felt encouraged by the young lady on the same server. I was saddened by the loss for a while after she passed away, and I am sure Maidy was among the lost friends who helped me one after another in the last dungeon of Endwalker.
I just stumbled across this video because the algorithm thought I might wanna see it. And boy, am I crying right now. My boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer a few years back as well. Luckily the cancer is gone but he still suffers from the treatment side effects and the fear of the cancer suddenly coming back haunts my dreams.
Recently he pulled this show up and I didn't know there was a show about FFxiv and even called it "cute but a little bit cringe" after we watched the first episode and now I really regret saying that.
I didn't know it was based on a true story and now, after I've watched this video and heard he passed in 2020, I am literally in tears.
This was wholesome and sad at the same time and I'm so proud to be a part of this absolutely wonderful community.
FFXIV Dad of Light was a big reason why I started playing! I had some interest on/off since it came out, but after watching it on Netflix I jumped right in to the free trail and when EW was announced I ran to pre-order it. I'm so Grateful to Miady for starting me on this amazing journey through Eorzea!
13 years is a long time to play a game. In that time who knows how many similar stories have occurred? I hope wherever these lost warriors of light have found themselves, they can find a community as welcoming as this.

In a sense Maidy was all our friend even if we never met him. Hopefully he's continuing his journey in the great beyond, becoming a true Warrior of Light.

It's been a while since I've seen the show, but this really makes me think of me and my father. One of my sisters and I got him to play the game and he got through Shadowbringers and seemed to enjoy it enough that he actually made another character. I would go into his room while he was at work to do things like Main Scenario roulette to level his DRK and get moogle tomes.
And then he suddenly passed away 2 months before Endwalker and about a week before his birthday. I still remember the last time I saw him logged in, I think he was farming a mount with my sister, but I didn't join for a reason I don't remember. I always think about how he never got to see Endwalker, or how I should have played with him more, since it was really the only time we talked since the pandemic started. I named the FC airships and my BRD and NIN gearsets after his characters, just to take a little part of him along the journey still.
I feel like this is an important story to go around, you presented it very well, thank you, while I had seen some of Dad of Light, I wasn't aware of the story behind it's creation.
Watching Dad of Light and then learning how the sequal is even sadder is too much.
