This is by far the most information jam packed 28 and a half musical minutes I have spent EVER. I have studied classical flute for 10 years, jazz flute for one year, classical piano for five years and voice for one year. Even about 6 months ukulele. In retrospect, what I did NOT learn is truly amazing! No fault of teachers, I'm sure. Learning technique on various instruments takes lots of explanation and lots of time correcting mistakes. Still, I am floored at how much essential theory is omitted in order to get students playing something -- anything at all -- and who cares if they actually understand it or can build on it. Needless to say, I'm hooked and will be watching and studying your videos. I am 74 years young, married to a professional piano player who has been performing professionally for about 45 years and I'm sure there is stuff in some of your more advanced material that will even be of interest to him. You are a National Treasure! Thanks so much for creating such a well organized course of study. The fact that it's free is even more astounding! Many blessings to you for your dedication to music education!

I can only repeat what the other viewer above said. I had music lessons in my youth - exclusively classical - and tried many tutorials and such. I am also a highschool teacher here in Berlin (not music), and as such I can tell you that you not only have musical talent, you also have an amazing talent to explain things. Not just how the facts are, but - and this is so important - also the overlying patterns, and how everything is linked. I always try to do that in my work as well. All a bit fast for me, but as you also wonderfully explained, one can rewind, stop, watch over and over again. Perfect. So, same comment from me: One of the most valuable, music lessons ever heard or seen - and I have watched quite a few here. So much in so little time. Now as a relatively beginner in piano I have to put that into practice, but thank you so much, Sir. So helpful.
I agree with all the above statements, not only are your a skilled jazz musician, but you are excellent teacher. Teaching by application is always the way to go😀. When I come out with my album, I'm putting your name on it as one of my instructors!

I started teaching myself the piano like 15 years ago. Got pretty good, can play most things by ear, improv classical like a champ, impress non-musicians in pubs etc. but never got my head around jazz ever. Just couldn't work it out. Watched this video one time and it clicked in my head for the first time. Twice and I could do it. Unbelievable lesson. Come at me Jazz world

Sometimes I get busy by other things and leave my piano practising for a little while. But when I come back you always have a few gems to teach me. I wll be watching this video over a few times to make sure everything has sunk in before I move onto the other parts.

I studied classical piano for years and now haven't played for a long time. It's a beginner lesson and some of it 100% beginner, but I can skip over what I already know. A lot is foreign to me despite many years of lessons because I was never taught this stuff. I'm trying to unlearn reading and learn improvisation, and I'm grateful for even the most miniscule of steps here. Thank you.

Great starting place for a beginner. I am a teacher and it's hard to tell students that knowledge really is power. When you understand the theory, chords, scales and so forth you can start to do some cool stuff. There is a learning curve which is hard to get through at the beginning. Thanks for your video.

OMG the way you explain scales and chords is music to my ears. Being a classical pianist I have found it almost impossible to find a teacher who understands how to 'dumb' it down and teach the jazz piano genre as I desperately wanted to learn about the 7th's etc and be able to play freely without reading the dots on the page. Awesome video! You explained how to count up a forth and down a fifth to determine how many black keys are in a scale and blew my mind! I've always thought to determine the key of a song by looking at the number of sharps or flats on the staff at the beginning of the composition was a matter of memorization. Turns out there's is a method to the madness! Thanks so much!
Kent, this helps a lot. I can play some jazz by ear, but I feel so stuck at the same time because I tend to neglect the theory and really "learning" what's going on in what I'm playing. Your videos give me a sense of direction and how to start applying the chords and theory. Thank you.

Well, guess what? I learn a lot from you here. You're such a nice person Kent to put all these efforts for free. I've came across several other channels but their materials are messy and aren't in order. I watched part 1 but before jumping into part 2, I have to practice the seven chords in all 12 keys first. As for what scales to play in each key, I still have no clue but I am sure they are discussed in later parts. For now, I will stick with practicing the chords in the right and left hands separately then mix them together. Later, the fun will really begin when I know what scales to use for each key.
You'll find answers to questions by going to my playlists and choosing a category. I'd stay w/ the Beginner Series to start. I don't think you have to learn all the chords in every key before getting into playing songs using the chords in a few easy keys like C, F, G Bb, Eb to start. Before finding those videos, it was impossible for me to learn jazz.. I am an intermediate self taught pianist with limited knowledge on the theory of music. This was a nice review and summary. For those interested, I took away from this what to practice is (I play guitar and bass but am new to keyboard, so the theory I knew but how to best learn it on the piano was new): learn the triads for all the chords in root, closed position (e.g. c then the next e then the next g for c major) learn the 7th chords in root closed position a good drill is to play: low root note (tone that names the chord), then a closed, root position chord in the left hand, then a two octave arpeggio in the right hand. Start with C with all 7th chord types and then move to one flat and one sharp then two... etc. add the 6th and suspended chords so you know what they are
Wow this really is beginner level. Not where I need to start from but most people I see teaching "beginner" is borderline intermediate and above. Seems people tend to forget what "beginner" means.
None of us ought to feel that an occasional reminder of the basics is to abase for our musical egos. Lord knows my learning by ear has worn my lobes to nubs...lol

I don't play piano, but bass guitar (since May last year) and I play some jazz tunes from the real book. Until 15 minutes ago I hadn't found understandable and thorough lesson material about building chords, harmony and so on on You tube. But now I have :-) Even, I now understand why/how the modes of C major have been built. So why D- is part of C major etc. Thank you for this very good video tutorial!
I love the way you talk through music theory. You make it so easy to digest. As a self taught “rookie” pianist aspiring to be a jazz pianist, this is exactly what I need. Taking a quick finger rest break, want to say thank you! Using your instructions, I started working on the 5 kinds of seventh chord a day or two ago. Could not even execute a Bb Maj7th chord cleanly; found some materials on the scales and also kept practicing the chords, and now (3 days later I think), I can (near) fluently do F Maj7-BbMaj7-EbMaj7-AbMaj7. Methodical, slow, careful trying to feel specifically what's wrong, making up my own little finger exercises ... No big deal really, even though what was impossible before is not that hard now. so again, thank you for giving the structure and instruction that actually work and give results, and in a very short time. You convey confidence; I feel confident that I can do it, and then verify that by doing it :-). And I don't want to chase a million other approaches (a big problem in the past for me), and when I do try other things, (like the scales and the home-made finger exercises), it is in the service of finishing what you recommend. I am working towards playing the five types of seventh in each key moving chromatically. I have a ways to go still, but I feel I know how to get there, and I am enjoying the trip. thanks again.
Pretty incredible for a beginner's jazz tutorial! It was a great review for my decade's worth of self-taught jazz theory. Information excellent and a terrific video but soooooo much information. As you say...adjust the speed and replay.

This is truly amazing! So many other ways online to learn chord progressions but none of them are as simple and concise as this video. Fast paced yet easy to retain. I've wanted to get into jazz since I picked the piano back up again and its very easy to be overwhelmed, Ill be looking forward to spending my nights with you one session at a time!

Not just how the facts are, but - and this is so important - also the overlying patterns, and how everything is linked. I always try to do that in my work as well. All a bit fast for me, but as you also wonderfully explained, one can rewind, stop, watch over and over again. Perfect.

I started teaching myself the piano like 15 years ago. Got pretty good, can play most things by ear, improv classical like a champ, impress non-musicians in pubs etc. but never got my head around jazz ever. Just couldn't work it out. I studied classical piano for years and now haven't played for a long time. It's a beginner lesson and some of it 100% beginner, but I can skip over what I already know. A lot is foreign to me despite many years of lessons because I was never taught this stuff. I'm trying to unlearn reading and learn improvisation, and I'm grateful for even the most miniscule of steps here. Thank you.

Great starting place for a beginner. I am a teacher and it's hard to tell students that knowledge really is power. When you understand the theory, chords, scales and so forth you can start to do some cool stuff. There is a learning curve which is hard to get through at the beginning. Thanks for your video.

OMG the way you explain scales and chords is music to my ears. Being a classical pianist I have found it almost impossible to find a teacher who understands how to 'dumb' it down and teach the jazz piano genre as I desperately wanted to learn about the 7th's etc and be able to play freely without reading the dots on the page. Awesome video! You explained how to count up a forth and down a fifth to determine how many black keys are in a scale and blew my mind! I've always thought to determine the key of a song by looking at the number of sharps or flats on the staff at the beginning of the composition was a matter of memorization. Well, guess what? I learn a lot from you here. You're such a nice person Kent to put all these efforts for free. I've came across several other channels but their materials are messy and aren't in order. I watched part 1 but before jumping into part 2, I have to practice the seven chords in all 12 keys first. As for what scales to play in each key, I still have no clue but I am sure they are discussed in later parts. For now, I will stick with practicing the chords in the right and left hands separately then mix them together. Later, the fun will really begin when I know what scales to use for each key.
You'll find answers to questions by going to my playlists and choosing a category. I'd stay w/ the Beginner Series to start. I don't think you have to learn all the chords in every key before getting into playing songs using the chords in a few easy keys like C, F, G Bb, Eb to start. This was a nice review and summary. For those interested, I took away from this what to practice is (I play guitar and bass but am new to keyboard, so the theory I knew but how to best learn it on the piano was new):
learn the triads for all the chords in root, closed position (e.g. c then the next e then the next g for c major)
learn the 7th chords in root closed position
a good drill is to play: low root note (tone that names the chord), then a closed, root position chord in the left hand, then a two octave arpeggio in the right hand. Start with C with all 7th chord types and then move to one flat and one sharp then two... etc.
add the 6th and suspended chords so you know what they are

I don't play piano, but bass guitar (since May last year) and I play some jazz tunes from the real book. Until 15 minutes ago I hadn't found understandable and thorough lesson material about building chords, harmony and so on on You tube. But now I have :-) Even, I now understand why/how the modes of C major have been built. So why D- is part of C major etc. Thank you for this very good video tutorial!

Taking a quick finger rest break, want to say thank you!
Using your instructions, I started working on the 5 kinds of seventh chord a day or two ago.
Could not even execute a Bb Maj7th chord cleanly; found some materials on the scales and also kept practicing the chords, and now (3 days later I think), I can (near) fluently do F Maj7-BbMaj7-EbMaj7-AbMaj7.
Methodical, slow, careful trying to feel specifically what's wrong, making up my own little finger exercises ... No big deal really, even though what was impossible before is not that hard now.
so again, thank you for giving the structure and instruction that actually work and give results, and in a very short time.
You convey confidence; I feel confident that I can do it, and then verify that by doing it :-).
And I don't want to chase a million other approaches (a big problem in the past for me), and when I do try other things, (like the scales and the home-made finger exercises), it is in the service of finishing what you recommend.
I am working towards playing the five types of seventh in each key moving chromatically.
I have a ways to go still, but I feel I know how to get there, and I am enjoying the trip.

My brain is hurting from all this information. I don't play piano nor have one but I'm hoping to have one in the future. I'm learning this especially the chords to apply it to the ukulele.
This is a really good beginner video tho. I love that it just gets to the point no bs. I just need to take each video as slow as I need to. Thank you for putting this out for free. You're really helping people who can't afford lessons (such as myself)💖
