CTR is still the best kart racing game and in all these years mario kart is not even remotely coming close to it because it has no real competitors

Tbh I didn't think I'd care for more gaming history videos until I found your channel, I like how you include all the technical difficulties/solutions that the original developers faced.
Keep up the good work, and DON'T eat the bugs. =)

Nice video man. i really like your deep dives into game development. its really interesting how developers had to overcome certain boudaries because of hardware limitations. i remember your first few docmentaries on your main channel and they got way more views back then than these these reuploads. So i wanna say keep up the good work, you're creating amazing content and i hope that you get the recognition you deserve with these videos

They did get more views, but the mix of anime content and video game documentaries didn't gel too well. I basically had two segregated audiences that weren't interested in what the other group wanted to see. Even though I knew I'd take a hit to views, I think having them separated like this is better in the long-term.

8:33: The game also had a dynamic difficulty curve throughout Adventure Mode. The more your progressed, the faster the AI gets and also more rubberbandy. But it will also turn the difficulty down if you lose a race too many times, giving more chances to win.
11:53: The truth is probably somewhere in between. In the game, it is intentionally locked to 30 FPS. We know this because there's an actual "switch" in the memory that we can turn into 60FPS mode. Doing this will make a lot of things going wonky (especially animations and sound). But the rest of the game still functions mostly normal, so they probably did develop the engine to work at any theoretical framerate. The problem is that on PS1 hardware, the gameplay can't never reach 60FPS only managed to 40-50 at best. So they probably decided to just lock it as the inconsistent framerate was not worth it.
High framerate in general was also not that much of a novel idea in the 90s either, many (2D) games did have it by default but most audience didn't really notice it as a "feature" yet. But in terms of 3D game development, it definitely was used as a performance metric because at the time 3D graphics on console was very costly. You can see it in something like Ridge Racer Turbo Demo Disc where they specifically developed a dedicated demo that runs at 60FPS proving it was possible on console but with some sacrifice.
13:10: there's also another two important mechanics we called "Turbo Reserves" and "Turbo Levels". The former functions as sort of a fuel tank that you fill by gaining turbos from power slides, hang times and turbo pads. It will deplete every time you are boosting. But as long as you kept gaining turbo, theoretically it can never run out and you can stay constantly boosting in all tracks with at least one turbo pad.
The latter is where there are different max speed that you could get from different levels of Turbo. Let's say the the turbo you get from single power slide is Level 1 turbo. When you get 3 consecutive slides, your turbo level changed to Level 2. When you gets a turbo item/drive through a turbo pad, your turbo will turn into Level 3, with the highest being Level 4 (only accessible via special turbo pads). As long as your turbo reserves/fuel tank is not empty, you can stay at these higher speed levels the whole race but it can get too fast to control.
14:05: Minor correction, it's still in the game but in the code they will immediately change it into another item. You can still access the Spring item via GameShark cheat.
15:00: Penta using the same stats as Polar/Pura had the same reason as the voice clip, they accidentally sent the non-final build of the game.

About the difficulty curve, wow, i though i was crazy! I did noticed it when i was younger when i first played the game.
And about the FPS, i still think the game hitting 30 FPS is so damn impressive, especially considering worst looking games both on PS1 and in other consoles have slowdowns and i think CTR never gets a single FPS drop, its a miracle. It also one of those few games where the core experience is so smooth that those 30 almost seems like 60, imo at least.
Thanks again for the info ❤

Putting aside my... passionate comment about CTR. I really love your research on the topic. Considering that you don't break open the game itself like we do, you still managed to get some important details the public haven't mentioned yet.
For the next topic, I suggest to cover the development history of Final Fantasy VII. I feel like there's a lot of info left on the table. Considering that the next Remake is coming and another Final Fantasy entry releasing, it'd be a great time for marketing synergy.
I've subscribed and can't wait for the next video. Cheers 🥰

    I loved your video.
Watch someone nerding about one of my favorite games of all time for 20+ minutes was so great. It is filled with interesting content and you voice it very nicely.
Although I'd enjoy you explaining more in-depth how the Blue Fire/Sacred Fire boosts worked, 80% of the video was new to me.

I love when game dev take the development seriously, by analyses the game they base on and upgrade it.
Nintendo should take note! I would play Crash Team Racing over Mario Kart! Heck, CTR remove remove the anti-gravity feature while MK8 include it, which make it an useless feature.
16:28 "The game will frequently crash" Is that intentional?

    • @sebastianaliandkulche
      @sebastianaliandkulche 21 день тому +1

      "Is that intentional".
No, is because Oxide size is way bigger than the rest of drivers and CTR is already pushing the ram of the PS1. Oxide model is just too big for the PS1 ram, at least with the base game, because modders were able to optimize even more the usage of ram, and make Oxide playable even on real hardware, with few graphical glitches (due to excedding poly count in few areas).
