Day 8 of solo hiking the Coast to Coast, my mum dropped me off in Kirkby Stephen and I made my way to Keld (I discuss at around 8:25 why I missed the section between Shap & Kirkby Stephen as I believe it was the right choice to make).
On my way to Keld I come across so many funny sheep, loud birds, and some intriguing sights.
I had an awesome night as I met up with several other hikers and we all spent the night in Keld chatting, drinking & playing games!:)

Also, my brother and I hiked Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for Mind, we got 55 miles in before we were forced to cut it short due to food poisoning from The Twice Brewed Inn on our third night! We're better now, and will continue the walk soon, so if you’d like to donate and support Mind I’ll add the link below! It’d mean so much, and for a good cause!

Keld and Stone Barns brings back many happy memories for me, not only from my two crossing on the Coast to Coast but also two hikes along the Pennine Way and one of my John OGroats to Lands Ends hikes. While the C2C will always be my most favourite Hike, my first encounter of Keld was on my First Pennine Way Prior to joining the Army in 1976, I returned to Keld again in my second Pennine Way Hike in 1979 at the grand old age of 23 after leaving the Army, now I am spending my first year of retirement enjoying others doing hikes I have done in the Past and hopefully leaving KIND COMMENTs and Memories of my Hiking Days. Enjoy your Coast to Coast and all future Hike you undertake. Tony in Essex

@@Orenjen Not sure if I have told you of my Longest Hike ever, its one hike that few others finish. Starting at John OGroats head south ALONG THE COAST, if you come across a stretch of water (River) you can not jump across follow the River / Stream until you can jump accross it, continue along the coast until you return to your starting Place (ie Walk the Complete Coastline of Great Britian) distance walked approx 5,000 MILES, time taken nearly 6 years, and NO I did not reverse the route to say I had walked the "Complete Coastline of the Main Island in both directions". After that hike I took a rest from Hiking and got a job for 10 yrs before taking smaller hikes. Now I am retired I am getting restless so I think another trip to Ennerdale will take place this year 2023. Just for shorter day hikes and maybe bag a few Munros. Keep Hiking while you enjoy it, then you too can look back in 50 or 60 yrs time with the same memories I have. All the Best for 2023, Tony in Essex.

Nine standards CAN be a very nice place to visit in the good weather but not so nice if its raining or foggy as it was on my first Pennine Way Hike. On my last visit to Nine Standards in 2010 (aged 50+), I was blessed with clear blue skys and no wind, that was a holiday I took to revisit some of the places I really enjoyed, I caught a coach from Essex to Darlinton then walked to Barnard Castle in the rain, next was Low Force to Dufton, Dufton down to Appleby, onward to Keld via Kirkby Stephens then over to Richmond following the River Swale to see all the Waterfalls before catching a local bus back to Darlington for my overnigh coach trip back to Essex. I only wish I could still do those long distance Hike but Age finally caught up with me and the knees will no longer cope with the milage, still I have my memories and thank to the Younger Generation like yourself I get to revisit them through you Eyes. Thank You Tiny Pine for covering this Hike. With reference to you question about tree size on the East side of the Pennines that is all down to rainfall, as most of our UK Rain comes via the West to East most of it falls in the Lake District and Pennines, by the time it gets to the Yorkshire Moors there is very little rain left to drop. I remember in my 20's going a year and a half without seeing my mum due to work. I was a right mums boy. I can still remember seeing her for the first time after that year and a half. That was 20 year ago. Sadly both my mum and dad died recently. I miss and think of them every single day. What you do is amazing. These hikes. But feel no shame in missing the ones you love the most. It must be a real challenge, the desire to walk solo mixed with the anxiety of camping alone / missing your family, so I'm not surprised you sometimes find it difficult, and being open about it does help the greater conversation about anxiety and depression, so thank you for being so honest in your videos.

If only AW had known what he had started. I used to suffer from Homesickness when I was young so I know the feeling well. What you need is a Cocker Spaniel they stick to you like glue and cheer you up when you are down they are so aware of your feelings they love the outdoors. This is another wonderfully shot episode, just enjoying this series so much. Apparently, the trees were all cleared by Neolithic farmers, and the land has been used for grazing since much of it is in private ownership and the use has never changed. Moss has taken hold and has probably created a hard pan which stops any trees from growing.

So much to speak about. Again I admire your courage to carry on despite you really feeling highly emotional and feeling acutely homesick. I really hope you’ve given yourself the credit it deserves to actually carry on. And I love how you listen to your gut instincts and do what you feel rather than what might be the done thing at times. Very impressive. I think the stripes in the land that you said could be lettering is where someone has dug up peat which can be used to burn. Not 100% but it looks like it. And I’m afraid that some of the outbuildings you come across on the moors are for sinister purposes regarding lambs etc. I’ll say no more. And how thoughtful of the man to check to see if you needed water. I love that. Lastly how do I find out what the music is at the start of your videos, the piano tune ? I absolutely love it. The stripes on the hillside relate to Grouse shooting. Grouse feed and nest on the moors and need different ages of heather at different times. The landowners burn patches in the landscape to kill the heather and encourage new growth so the game bird populations stay high.
The lack of trees is caused by sheep farming. Sheep are destructive grazers and will use their small
mouths to cherry pick the tastiest shoots which means less diversity in terms of wild flowers, shrubs and even trees. Sheep grazing leads to monocultures, cattle and horse farming is better for diversity as they’re much less picky eaters (due to the size of their mouths
The Dales, like the lakes, is a working environment but like you I think some rewilding and more sensitive land management would be good. Grouse shooting is a blot on the landscape

Thank you for letting me know! Though that’s awful, a reminder that humans can be cruel. I despise hunting for sport.
