      Also a header goes above a window or doorway. A beam is what they are holding up with the jack studs.

      @jbeutell 2 місяці тому

      Did I miss something or is he talking about some load bearing beams parallel to joists? At another point he correctly points out a partition wall. Guess I am just having trouble picturing it. And now he is in basement talking header size as if it should ever be sized to only carry 1 floor worth of load.

    I want to draw attention to the fact that the first words out of Cole's mouth split seconds after the beam fell were "you okay?" It was not expletive, or a comment concerning the board, or trying to assign blame. It's those moments when a person doesn't have time to formulate their thoughts that you see what a person is really like and what they really care about. That is an admirable quality in any person.

    Roman is correct. A jack stud is what is under a header/beam. A cripple stud is what fills in under or over a window, or over a doorway (between the header and the top plate, to provide a nailer).

    • @briancassiday3342
      @briancassiday3342 2 місяці тому +21

      I've always known them as jack studs as they perform the job of holding (or jacking up) the header. A quick google: "The king studs are the same length and size of regular studs in a wall; the only difference is that they are positioned at the ends of a header so they don’t necessarily land at regular on-center stud locations. Jacks, sometimes called trimmers, are studs cut to length to fit under each end of a header and down to the bottom plate." Learned something new today

      Instead of 'cripple' we always figured if you had 'kings' that were the biggest, 'jacks' doing the work, then the ridiculous little ones should be 'jokers' or 'fools', depending on if you prefer card- or court-based nomenclature.

    • @byronmill
      @byronmill 2 місяці тому +11

      Cole, Don't go all west coast on us now. In the Midwest I've always heard them called jack studs, not trimmers. The only time I heard them called trimmers was on the cable tv shows building out in California.

My suggestions, I would change the floor plan to include adding a washroom/shower room (with an outside entry), so you can remove your shoes, clothes and wash up when you come in from working to protect the family from the chemicals (and dirt) from farming. The kitchen will be so big, with so many cabinets, that you won't need such a large pantry. Maybe you can reduce the size of the pantry a bit to make room for a tub/shower in the bathroom for when you come in dirty from work and don't want to walk through the house dirty to get to the shower upstairs. Just a thought. =)

    Roman, when you cut that miter on the edge of the 2x4 jack stud at +49:10, you positioned the fence on the wrong side of the blade (with the blade titled towards the left, and the fence on the left side of the blade, to cut off the top right corner of the stud). Setting up the fence that way is actually dangerous. You had the stud trapped underneath the blade. When the stud tries to lift upward (because you didn't have anyone helping you support the far end of the stud) it will cut too deeply into the stud, and the stud can easily kick back towards you (and/or jam the saw blade). Even with proper in-feed and out-feed support that's a very dangerous way to position the fence.
    When using a left-tilting table saw for miter cuts like that, you should always position the fence on the right side of the blade, and cut off the bottom left corner of the stud (and stand to the right of the blade so when the cutoff kicks back at the end of the cut it doesn't hit you). That way the stud doesn't get trapped between the blade and the fence, and if the stud lifts away from the blade it just makes your miter a bit too shallow rather than ruining the cut or ruining you.
    Also, it's sometimes easier to manage miter cutting a 2x4 stud if you stand the stud on its edge (with the 4-inch face against the fence) and the blade set for a 3/4-inch wide miter cut rather than putting the stud face down (with the 2-inch edge against the fence) and trying to make a 2.75-inch wide miter cut. But that's a personal choice.

      Also, use a push stick, or two. A board can kick or jolt on the most experienced woodworkers even when the cut is set up correctly and you don't want to have your fingers that close to the saw blade when it does.

    • @MrFugasi
      @MrFugasi 2 місяці тому

      I felt my stomach drop as I saw him sliding his fingers past that blade to keep the 2x4 positioned in the cut. A kick back of the wood could have easily pulled his fingers into the path of the blade. Very important to have the back end of the 2x4 supported and to use a push tool instead of your fingers. I'm glad that Roman still has his fingers.

    I know a few people who have cut the bed opened to access the fuel pump and then made a removeable cover.
    When you take the bed off, pressure wash the bottom of the bed and the frame and also wire brush the frame. Then use bed liner spray, or other quality, spray on material, and do the bottom of the bed and the frame. Will look nice when it's done, and will last for years.

    Cole, those springy support walls should have either
    A. bridging/blocking between each stud (2x8x14.5 blocks turned sideways and installed halfway up from the floor), or
    B. diagonal braces, or
    If you're going to install wall-mounted cabinets in the pantry then bridging blocks at multiple heights (base cabinet height, and upper cabinet height) would solve two problems at once. They will stiffen the springy support wall, and provide strong mounting surface for all the cabinetry.

      In New Zealand old English we call its a Jack Stud to support the header also known as (lintel). King Stud it beside the Jack Stud from bottom plate to top plate. Cripple is between header and top plate or sill to bottom plate. We also have double top plate. Some refer as Jack Studs or half Studs. Or Sill cripples top crippers or half studs.
      Also unde our building code noggins and dwangs aka nogs I believe Americans refer to as blocks or fire blocks are installed at every 600mm between studs. But here we call them dwangs. Unlike some US codes routing hole for cables don't have to be fire corked. Some also refer to Jack's to be sitting on top of (window) sill plate etc.
      Some new codes require 6inch 120mm outer wall with dwangs. Plus treated ply as bracing glued and screwed. For earthquakes etc, With double to triple glazing. And higher R-ratings for insulation.

    Here's another tip for y'all: When installing the joist hangers on the LVLs, where drywall is going over them, cut about a 3/16" (the thickness of the hanger metal) 'relief cut' in the bottom of the LVL to create a pocket for the bottom of the joist hanger to fit into. That way the bottom of the hanger is flush with the bottom of the LVL and there won't be a bump in the drywall when it gets installed.

    In your pantry I would highly recommend putting a deep countertop and then a bunch of electrical plugs so say for example you want your blender and all that your toaster. You can put that there and then you could have sliding doors or a roll up door that comes down onto that. So that your countertop does not look cluttered. Also I would stick a trash system in there. Maybe even in your countertop or you can make it that there's some type of cover for the trash so that the countertop is flush. I wish I could describe it as I see it. Just so that you don't have to pull the trash can out and slide stuff off onto the countertop into the trash. You can just slide it all into the hole. And inside your house I would think about doing like an outside door that comes into a shower unit and sink so that if you have to rinse some of your clothes off or God forbid your dog sprayed by a skunk. You could go into that room and deal with those situations. And if you have to strip down for whatever reason instead of bringing all that into the house you could do it there. I personally would make that my washroom but my home would have been a different layout

    a good building practice is to place blocking/backing brackets where thing heavy will be mounted, such as handrail supports, light fixtures, fans etc. these also double as horizontal braces between load bearing wall studs. Plan for the furniture length and width and turning space. Some framers call it SHIM-FACE.

  • @jamespenn5788
    @jamespenn5788 2 місяці тому +5

    In Oregon we always blocked the upright studs in the walls for strength, it keeps the studs from bowing. Also blocking makes a good nailing surface behind the drywall. Lathe and plaster gives strength to the walls, without the lathe and plaster you need something to strengthen the upright studs. Especially to nail cabinets too. When drywall first came out, they always used to put plywood up first then put the drywall over top of the plywood. But they decided not use plywood as a backer for drywall to cut construction costs. All the houses I owned had all wood walls. I absolutely hate dry wall alone. It is a nightmare to decorate especially if you have something heavy you want to hang on the wall like mirrors or large oil paintings. My house had 12' ceilings and believe me when you decorate and have high ceilings it takes large pieces to make any kind of impression. Pocket doors are a must wherever possible.

    While a jack stud is used to support the weight of the header, a cripple stud is cut to add additional framing above the door or window opening, and below a window. Though cripple studs are not load-bearing, they’re important parts of a building’s framing because they serve as blocks for other building materials, such as plywood or drywall, to attach.
