Now begins the work to get you to react to the entire Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory album. It's a magical experience that deserves to be listened to in order.
Breaking all illusions is a must! The song will melt your face off, especially the solo (which made me so emotional a few days ago that I stopped my car and shed a tear)
"Metropolis Pt.1: the Miracle & the Sleeper" was recorded in 1992 for Dream Theater's 2nd album 'Images & Words' which became a gold-selling success... The song hinted at a past love triangle between 2 men and 1 woman - the tragic story of which survived long after their deaths in the stage of a city. Years later, Dream Theater had demoed a song called 'Metropolis Pt. 2'... but in 1999, they scrapped it in favor of writing a whole concept record "Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes from a memory" ...They elaborated the story of a woman named Victoria in 1928, who is torn between her love for 2 brothers - Edward and Julian (The Miracle & the Sleeper) ... Victoria's memories & emotions are passed on to a man named Nicholas in the present, who sees a hypnotherapist to revisit what seems to be a past life. Nicholas reads the cover story about the tragedy, but his memories from Victoria reveal the truth of what happened to her...
Scenes from a Memory IMO is one of the most technically impressive Concept albums ever recorded (at this time). It is amazing. I left it in my car CD player for a full year including family road trips simply because there was so much going on in that album.
Glad to see that you're doing Dream Theater again. Nice to see you found a way around it. I wasn't sure which Mike you were referring to, probably not me even though you did respond to my comment dealing with you not playing DT anymore. You told me the record co. was giving you crap, I get it. So that was a good song, and it had a different drum player. Not Mike Portnoy. So welcome back to DT land, and if I may give a suggestion. It's a studio version, and a great story to go along with it. The songs about a journey John Petrucci took in Italy I believe. So he wrote a song about it and it is epic. Full story, as I understand it. John Petrucci, the guitarist, meets a fan while they're touring in Tuscany. The fan introduces himself as the local Count and asks John if he wants to come to visit his grounds. During the ride there, the Count explains a fun fact. The character of Hannibal Lecter as seen in Hannibal is loosely based on his brother, Sebastiano. The count introduces them, shows John his wine cellars and tells him another fun fact or two. The ones about the soldiers who hid in wine barrels only to be hammered shut and never released and the ones about what happened in the chapel. John is legitimately freaked out that he trusted the wrong guy and he'll end up like the soldiers or worse. He asks the Count about it and gets the answer you heard at the end of the song. The Count didn't mean to frighten him. He just wanted someone he admires to remember him and know his colorful story. He lets Petrucci go and years later, John writes the song about him. Not sure how much of the story is fiction and how much is true, but it still makes for one hell of a story. Many songs on Black Clouds and Silver Linings are based on dark experiences from Petrucci's life. The stories are the black clouds and the resulting songs are the silver linings. Difficult to play is an understatement. My band used to play Pull Me Under and the intro section of Metropolis. That was enough to say No Mas. Change of Seasons is one of my faves
Dream Theater has been on multiple labels. Sometimes people get strikes from Official Music Videos of theirs (depending on the label) You should be safe if you just listen to the songs (audio) off of youtube. That is what I have seen most reactors do. Love your reactions by the way! Keep up the great work
+1 for the suggestion to listen to Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory. Just listen to Part 1 about 10 times first so that you can truly appreciate all of the musical references in Part 2
Oh yes. Should also do the track "fatal tragedy" at some point, remember i was in a band once, who liked Dream theater a lot, and worked on that guitar solo for hours and hours, really difficult and insane, i learned it but can´t play it anymore, too fast for my old days...lol.
DT has been a favorite of mine for years because of the creativity and accuracy. I listen to a lot of Instrumental stuff from amazing players and there are a whole lot of albums to choose from where the music is so good it doesn't need words. If you want a long list of incredible players, I'd be glad to give some recommendations; but I think a good start would be Steven Taranto Permanence.
I knew you'd get to it eventually and knew you'd love it. This song and Pull Me Under are on their 2nd album Images And Words (1992). You should react to that full album. I saw them perform it in its entirety for the 25th anniversary in 2017 -- 4th row center -- incredible show. They were influenced by Pink Floyd, RUSH, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc. In fact, they have live recordings where they performed Pink Floyd's album Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety as well as Metallica's Master Of Puppets album, Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast album, Deep Purple's Machine Head album. I was in 12th grade when this album came out in 1992. I remember seeing the video for Pull Me Under. I went to the mall to buy the album on cassette. I've been hooked on them since. This and Pull Me Under are still my favorite Dream Theater songs and Images And Words is still my favorite DT album. So much nostalgia.
I saw that tour of their 25th anniversary in Albany NY and didn't realize thats what the tour was. My girlfriend surprised me with tickets and the whole way I was saying "I just want to seem them perform Under A Glass Moon" and when I saw it was the Images & Words tour I curled up and cried with excitement
I have a recomendation, unlike Google, The Brave Plataform doesnt have publicity in you tube videos, at least for some time...The Images and Words album was amazing, i love it in those days.
This is probably a middle of the road song for complexity from DT. I see you rocking your NY T-Shirt. Did you know the original drummer, Mike Portnoy is from Long Beach Long Island. Thats Mike Mangini in this vid. Mangini is the better drummer but to be honest, I like the songs with Portnoy better than with Mangini. For one, Portnoy was a better showman, was a founding member and named the group. And two, he contributed to the songs way more than Mangini does. And the guitarist John Petrucci and the Bassist, John Myung are High School Buddies from Kings Park Long Island. The band is still based in Long Island and at least those three still live here. They have a new album coming out in the fall. When I was playing guitar hero a lot I could Play "Pull Me Under" pretty well on the second highest level. LOL. There are tons of youtube people playing DT songs. You would be surprised.

'Metropolis part 2: scenes from a memory' full album reaction needs to happen, one of my favorite albums of all time

Wow. I LOVE DT....thank you very much for this treasure.
SRV, John Petrucci, and Steve Vai are my top 3 favs. Then prob. Malmsteen
Jordan Rudess has to be the best keyboard player on earth. His ability to match JP’s fretwork is unreal.
Incoming Kevin Moore comments!
