Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

I’ve been listening to this band since their first album in 1989,
    “When Dream And Day Unite”
and I knew then they were
    something special. saw them
live for the first time in 1992 in
a small club in Northern Ca. and
they played that show like there
were 10K people! (In reality, it was
more like 75 people!) I’ve seen them
10 more times over the years, and
every time I saw them, they were
    consistent in their performances.

Lol as absolutely incredible as their timing and precision is, all I could think of as I was listening to this was "that sounds exactly like a Boss Fight from a Nintendo game."

Awesome thanks guys! Immediately subbed after the Big Medley vid, so happy to see this one. For his first foray into their original work with vocals, I would so highly recommend A Change of Seaosns, the live version from "Live: Scenes from NY (2000)". One of their finest moments!

@@LiteralistReactions "Pull Me Under" has the whole "fancy Shakespeare allusions" thing going for it, so that's probably a good start. I'd love to see "Lines in the Sand" get a nod at some point; an underappreciated gem of theirs (probably because it's off the _Falling into Infinity_ album which everyone has a weird hate-boner for)

The best Dream Theatre songs are all instrumentals.😄

Don't they only have 6 or 7? Unless you count the NOMAC interludes

I respectfully disagree. The lyrical content is just as moving as the instrumental sections. Check out Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (and all of their other material as well).

DT is still my favorite since 1992 when i heard Pull Me Under on the radio.
Love all these guys, LTE, Transatlantic, Neal Morse and much more.
Going to see John Petrucci at Hard Rock Orlando 10/23 for his solo tour with Portnoy on drums
JP & MP's wives are opening for them in an all female band called Meanstreak.

This video reminds me that I haven’t listened to enough Dream Theatre. I have dabbled with some of their albums, but haven’t listened to many after Metropolis. I have to fix that. Great reaction.
Another band that I would assume fits into the shoe gazer category that I just started listening to is Haken. The Cockroach King would be great for a lyric reaction I think.

Wow... I saw Mike Portnoy at a drum clinic in Memphis '96. My first DT show was 2000 on the metropolis 2000 tour. At front of stage. Then I saw them in DC twice, once at a small club (929)? then they opened for Iron maiden. Anyways, I'm a huge Dream theater fan. Glad you enjoyed Dave

The song with "Chopsticks" slipped in the middle is Manfredd Man's cover of "Blinded by the Light." I'm sure it gets worked into other songs, as well, as a joke.
Liquid Tension Experiment is a weird one. It's Mike (Drums), Jordan (Keyboards), and John (Guitar) from this video plus Tony Levin on bass/chapman stick (Levin's been in King Crimson, a bunch of Peter Gabriel records, and loads of other session work). But at the time of the first two LTE albums, Jordan wasn't a member of Dream Theater yet. He joined them AFTER their second keyboardist, Derek Sherinian, left.
And Liquid Tension experiment recently (as in, during the pandemic) put out a third album, which is wild to me. Associated with that third album is their metal cover of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." It's as wild as you think.
As for Dream Theater, honestly, their lyrics/vocals are often the weakest part of their songs, especially after Kevin left and they stopped letting Myung write his free-form-poetry lyrics. Mike wrote most of their best lyrics, and he's not in the band, anymore, either.
On the other hand, Petrucci wrote the lyrics to "Lines in the Sand," which is probably one of their best songs (seriously, that delivery of "living comes much easier/once we admit we're dying" line hits like a brick)

Not Chopsticks, it's Heart and Soul . In the movie Big with Tom Hanks, they do both on the piano.

Tony Levin plays Bass on the
    Liquid Tension albums. He also
    played Bass on John Lennon’s
Double Fantasy album, as well as
being the Bassist in King Crimson
    for the last 40 years…

If you don't know them yet I would love to see you both reaction to some "Opeth" songs :)
I'd suggest to start with "Ghost of Perdition", then "Harlequin forest", "Burden", "Deliverance", "Faith in Others" and any other song by them :D
Even though they are great live, I'd also suggest to listen to the studio version first because it's mixed and mastered really well!

Dream Theater - Another Day [OFFICIAL VIDEO] ua-cam.com/video/LYtiDCXLAcQ/v-deo.html Ok, so I checked your reaction list, since the beginning of time, and I don't see any Dream Theater. Here's something mellow to introduce you to the band that was formed in 1985 in NY. Once I know your in Love, I'll send you another. Then the Cash rolls in. Good luck guys, and strap in

Michael - I had not heard Another Day. Are you sure they didn't write that one for Journey? There's a boatload better DT out there. We'll be doing Pull Me Under, next. Won't hit the channel schedule for a few weeks, but it's coming. In introducing Dave to this phenomenal band, I started with the first song I ever heard from the band, "The Big Medley." Then we did instrumedley as you know so I could show Dave their playing ability. We're dipping his toe in. Thanks! - JD

@@LiteralistReactions I have ALL the Dream Theater they have. Been listening since 1995. Another Day is mellow, and I didn't want to scare you with there radicle stuff. Oh Yeah, there a boatload. It's all I listen too. All other seem minor in comparison. Good example of the crazy side would be Glass Prison. Then there's all the Epic songs.
