The ibex is the king of the Alps, famed for its curved horns and extreme climbing skills. But for centuries, these mountain goats were hunted by humans - to the very brink of extinction. A royal hunting reserve in Italy saved the Alpine ibex, but is climate change now threatening them all over again? We tell the story of their remarkable comeback and ask what the future might hold.
👉🏽 Gran Paradiso National Park is on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, a program of best practice for conservation. It’s also one of the WWF’s Alpine “gemstones”, areas that have been identified as in need of urgent protection. It's amazing how one man can change the future for better or worse, in this case for better. If that king didn't hire the poachers to protect the Ibex they may b all extinct now. Thank u Terra Mater, you've succeeded again at making a great video.
A strong catholic monarchy is the only way.
Originally only for his own hunting pleisure though...
We shouldn't glorify the autocrats from the past, but this time it undoubtly had a good Outcome. At least for the ibex. :)
@@a54109 sadly the strong catholic monarchy in spain did not help the iberian ibex.....
I was in Switzerland back in 98 and had the pleasure of seeing these magnificent animals from about 30 yards away. I could have watched them for hours and never got bored. Beautiful animals that I'm glad someone had the foresight to protect so we can still see them today.
This is a wonderful story Richard - thank you for sharing it with us! I am sure this was a memorable moment for you 🏔🐐
We have the wild goat species "Capra aegagrus" here in Türkiye. It is a relative of Ibex. Thanks to effective protection initiatives, their numbers are on the rise. I'm happy to see that Alpine Ibex was saved from extinction. They are such agile and beautiful animals of mountains.
They are not a wild goat species, they are THE wild goat species. Direct ancestor to domestecated goats
That is amazing to hear, thank you for sharing that with us Kenan 🏔🐐 They truly are beautiful animals!
Apparently, the wild goat is an ibex, it is basically known as the West Asian Ibex, an ibex is any goat that belongs to the genus Capra, there are six species of ibex, the West Asian Ibex/Wild Goat (Capra aegagrus), the Himalayan Ibex (Capra himalayensis), the Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex), the Iberian Ibex (Capra pyrenaica), the Nubian Ibex (Capra nubiana), and the Walia Ibex (Capra walie), in fact, because the West Asian Ibex (aka Wild Goat) is the direct ancestor of the Domestic Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus), the domestic goat is an ibex.
Out of curiosity, can your Turkish goats climb dams? :)
@@sanjivjhangiani3243 They can, but they prefer not to take such needless risks for they have no taste for "extreme goating". Of course, from time to time they make small tricks just to amuse occasional guests from "Hindistan" ("India" in Turkish). The umbrella organization of Turkish wild goats, ARCGOT (Association of Responsible and Concerned Goats of Türkiye), regularly conducts awareness-raising events for "kids", discouraging them from taking lethal risks and from climbing man-made monuments. And they do this not by the tough way, but by giving the kids a "kid glove" treatment, informing them of the dangers of the ways of their crazy Ibex cousins.
There actually was a surviving population of Ibex outside of Italy in France during the 19th century in the Vanoise valleys. It would later become a French national park and the park is adjacent to the Gran Paradiso national park right across allowing for the two population to exchange genetics which was crucial in their recovery. I was extremely lucky to witness an Ibex on my recent stay there, they are incredible creatures!
These are such incredibly awesome creatures and I'm so glad we still have them around. They are just awe inspiring.
We are very happy to be able to share such good news with all of you 🏔🐐
I love conservation stories like this! It's heartwarming to know that there are always people trying to protect species like the Ibex
We love to hear that! We are also all about conservation and raising awareness about it 😊 Especially with a happy end 🏔🐐
Hi friends, who else loves stories, where species manage to come back against all odds? 😍🙋🏻♀

Please make a story about the successful conservation of the Indian tiger 🐅🐅
@@thecrusader6401 as well as the Indian Lion 👍
Yes, I love those stories. those are rays of light in these dark times where species go extinct by the thousands. But possibly you can also do documentations about extinct species like the Chinese yellow river dolphin to raise awareness. People generally do not like that species become extinct - so maybe such stories can cause action against species extinction :)

@@thecrusader6401 Thanks a lot! 🤗
And great suggestion, I‘ll keep it in mind for our next editorial meeting!
- So glad that *King* saved all of those precious animals. 🐐🤴 👑
The Ibex looks so amazing, just woah. Sadly it's always the animals with the most impressive looks that tend to be threatened, schools should really put in some more effort into making people aware of our beautiful planet, or maybe other institutes? This channel atleast is a good addition.
No. As a biologists this really grinds my gears. Unpopular, ugly and unknown species are also threatened with extinction but far too little people care because they don't make great poster children while they often are more important to ecosystems. Please appreciate our little, uglier organisms a little more ;)
@@wouterberings6535 thank you for going out of your way to advocate for me
@@wouterberings6535 I am very much aware of this as well, but you should know that some animals have been made so popular in popculture that nobody believes anyone is wrong with them. Like do you ever? Ever hear about the bad state lions are in? I never do? Yes I hear about Pandas and the Giraffe from time to time. But I wouldn't say their fame always helps them. It ofc gives them an edge over most other 'less' appealing species. I tho, love all life forms tbf, from frogs to lizards, anglerfishes to dolphins :)
Yes, sadly the most impressive looking animals are the ones hunters always want to shoot the most

i'm Moroccan . And I would like you to talk about the Barbary sheep a close relative to Ibex species .
Great suggestion, thanks a lot!

Wow. While watching this video I'm about to cry seeing ibex being hunt hundreds of them and being unprotected. But later on, thanks to the king who declared this animal should be protected and preserved. Astonishing to know that they are rising from the threatened extinction of their species. Great video!
That is very understandable! We are always trying to share the real situation which is often not a good one - but in this case there is hope for these beautiful creatures 🏔🐐
Oh beautiful to see the Ibex ....
What an excellent presentation and heartwarming that some are trying to help these magnificent creatures survive 🥰👍

Not entirely true because Trophy hunting is allowed .
@@shatnermohanty6678 yes allowed in an extremely controlled and very limited quantity ($50k for 1 ibex) and the money is used to breed more and enhance their security againt local poachers).

Fascinating !
I had no idea that they were 5 different ibex species.
The ibex is not the only species that has different ones among their kind - check out the other videos on our channel and you'd be surprised what our beautiful world has to offer 😊
@r-t 92, there are actually six ibex species, the West Asian Ibex (Capra aegagrus), the Himalayan Ibex (Capra himalayensis (formerly Capra sibirica)), the Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex), the Iberian Ibex (Capra pyrenaica), the Nubian Ibex (Capra nubiana), and the Walia Ibex (Capra walie), the former out of the six species is also known as the Wild Goat, in fact it is the ancestor of the Domestic Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus), meaning the Domestic Goat is actually an ibex, an ibex is any goat that belongs to the genus Capra.
@@indyreno2933 yeah
Especially here in Himalayas
There are still many species of domestic goats almost similar to native ibex
The only exception is smaller horns and half the ability of surviving harsh Himalayan winters alone
The turs and markhor are the only goats not considered ibexes since they are not part of the genus Capra, but instead two separate genera being Brachyceros and Aegoceros respectively.
like u so mach
humans change the environment around them to fit themselves but other complex life forms change themselves to adapt to the environment they are in.
IBEEEEXXXXXX. I hope that the Ibex is reintroduced in Portugal and Spain

you need to review your data... the extinct capra pyrenaica pyrenaica was only a form of Capra pyrenaica (iberian ibex) which has pupulations well established all over the peninsula
The Ibex is like, "I lived b*tch."
Are they hooved, or are they cloven?

Fun fact: A species of ibex is the first species to become, "unextincted." However, it shortly became extinct again.
Hi Indrid! Fun and sad at the same time 🥲
so cool they r in africa europe n asia
A great story is of successful conservation. The world needs to emulate this model of distribution. Especially in India, where the Gujarat government is denying to distribute or spread the population of its lions to other states like Madhya Pradesh, which proved potential habitat range for lions, despite MP state's repeated requests for the past 2 decades. The consequence, overpopulation, inbreeding, and lion population is dying with various diseases in Gujarat. What Gujarat government say to all this, they say its 'Gujarat's pride' they wouldn't like sharing or distributing their lions to other states which otherwise would have raised the chances of survival also increasing their healthy living and increased habitat range.
Every Capricorn knows their struggles. And strenghts.
