I was born in Enniscorthy and left when I was 9 years old in the late 1960s'. I have been back about a dozen times since then and as this clip shows the town hasn't changed that much in over 40 years. Apart from the road layout (a lot of one-way systems and traffic lights) everything seems familiar but strangely different at the same time. I have many happy memories of my childhood in the town where I grew up first in Templeshannon and later in the Duffry Gate area. Greetings to kin & friends.

It badly needs to be bypassed. Just manic amounts of 24/7 traffic going through it. A total bottle neck at peak times. So it is not people or pedestrian friendly this way. The amount of exhaust fumes and especially from lorries must make the air quality very bad. It should be a lot nicer for everyone when it has been bypassed.

Eryk; there is a lot of old money in the picture, various mills and breweries, cathedrals, friaries and castles; the athenaeum, and so on. The problem is that the modern Enniscorthy person cant put these together into the real industry it could make of the area: tourism. Instead, this is too expensive, and that wont work, and sure its always going to be like that. Lack of vision. Enniscorthy is a jewel waiting to be rescued from the gurriers. There were people who had vision; Planting a row of trees on the shannon side of the river, but they have gone, in favor of the "lets do it cheaply" crowd. The new bridge is a disgrace, and they made a sh*hole out of Abbey Square. They stirred the concrete around in Market Sq. until it became a dead space, and the river is reduced to a trickle. Dont get me wrong; there are some good signs - the Waterfront pool is amazing, the Riverside hotel is nice (even if they took a chunk out of the Prom they shouldnt have), and Monart Spa is a global top ten destination. But the town planners havent a clue. What they need to do is to identify their assets - the banks, churches, old industrial stone buildings, the Antique tavern, and build on them by building more like them to fill in the gaps. Instead, they tear down the good old stuff and put up junk like they have between the river and Abbey Sq. Bennetts hotel was nice, but the replacement (while not having been set back a few feet to widen the road) is just junk. Not hideous, but certainly not complementing its position like the old hotel did.

Are our only assets really "the banks, churches, old industrial stone buildings and the Antique tavern"??? Personally, I would have started with Vinegar Hill, closely followed by the Castle (which was once, a very fine museum, until the Eileen Gray fans got hold of it )...
Come to think of it, they probably all drink in a little tavern on the end of Slaney Street...

It will be great to look back in years to come to see exactly the homogenous country we have lost through mass imigration from the third world. Just like looking at videos from London in the 60s /70s.
