I was legitimately shocked when I got older and found out that hook wasn't considered a good movie by critics and audiences. The actors are great especially Hoffman as hook and hoskins as Smee. I think the idea of Peter growing up and forgetting his past was a great idea and it still holds up today. Love your videos, thank you for making them.
I never was able to play Hook at the arcade when I was younger, well anything at the arcade, because my family was poor. But I always wanted to play Hook because I am a life long Peter Pan fan. A couple months ago I was able to get a Oneup Arcade machine that I hacked and the first game I loaded up was Hook. Let me tell you, the child in me was so ecstatic. I beat the whole thing in one sitting and was an amazing experience for me. I have since played in multiple times with friends and my own kid now.

that sega cd version looks like it plays so nice and snappy. The snes and genesis were so slow, my only gripe. Bonus for mentioning the pinball table, it was one of my favorites back in the day. I wish movies today would put in care to tell a decent story while remaining true to the source material. There was a freakin pirate baseball game FFS, that movie took chances, and came out amazing. One of my all time favorites.
I could've shown more of the pinball machine but I wasn't sure if people were interested in that or not. The Sega CD version has epic music And I got a copyright strike almost immediately for even including a 10 second clip
Dude YOU are the best! Man I LOVE this movie, got the two different Peter Pan action figures in this line, WORSHIPPED the SNES game and cried when I played the NES version lol. The arcade version I didn’t play until maybe 2018…
I’m 51 years old and I never saw the movie and was questioning watching this video….I said to myself, “Self” you know all Patmams videos are excellent so just watch it! I’m glad I did, thank you and Merry Christmas.
You must have lived the life of a true gangster if you never saw Hook. With T2 and Batman Returns, it was one of the biggest movies of that era. In 2023, I would not recommend Hook to ANYONE, it was a 90's thing. You kinda had to be there.
I love the movie Hook! It holds a special place among my favourite movies. I have played the SNES, Mega Drive and NES versions of Hook, but never finnished any of them due to that they are very difficult games. The Arcade game I would like to play!
Hook, the movie, was the film that started my appreciation of villains in a story. I guess the Peter Pan mythology offers more than one lesson about growing up. 😁
Yeah, who would have guessed that Peter Pan was actually teaching kids to run away from their parents, do whatever they want, and practice occultism? All he was missing was the pan flute and goat legs.
I remember seeing the 4-player version of the arcade game when I was a kid at a miniature golf/arcade. With this game being a side-scrolling beat-em-up it reminded me of Konami games, that had the same style of game-play, at the time. I always considered these games, quarter-munchers. I am glad that I was able to find the ROM for MAME so that I can enjoy this game once again. One thing I like to do with these types of games with MAME is MAP all of the buttons and directional movements to a single controller. (I have a USB adapter, made by MAYFLASH, which allows me to connect both NES and SNES controllers to my PC) This way I can control all 4 characters simultaneously. This is really fun for the Simpsons arcade because when you leave 2 or more characters touching each other for a few seconds, they combine forces and go on a rampage. Just imagine having the ability to control Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael at the same time. With that said, another great vid, Patman, keep them coming.
Always been a fan of the movie but never checked out the games much. Really cool to learn about the arcade version, I would have loved to play that back in the day.
I loved this movie as a kid and still love it. I only knew about the SNES version, but never played it. Now I absolutely have to find the arcade version on MAME! Thanks, Patman!
I never knew the movie was a moderate success. I loved it when I watched it. But I never knew there was an arcade game of the film. Once again, excellent vid, Patman
I knew there was an NES and SNES version of Hook, but I never knew that there was an arcade version until a few years ago when I saw footage of it on UA-cam somewhere. I played it on MAME and I loved it!
I was hoping for a *Hook* sequel, Robin Williams as Peter was one his under-rated roles; in my opinion he did an awesome job. Dustin Hoffman as Hook was also well done; some really good casting choices. I had a SNES but sadly never purchased the *Hook* game; looking back on it, I am kicking myself; looked like pretty representation of the movie.
I kind of liked the Hook game on the Amiga/ST/PC. It wasn't great, but there weren't many games like it at the time. "Dollar General Versions of the characters" - Hilarious and true!
If the Japanese version of the arcade came first, surely the recolored Captain Hook clones are because back in the day it was heavily frowned upon to show violence towards women in video games even if the game was violent. (In the US at least.) So I imagine someone replaced the lady pirates with two Hooks as a quick and dirty fix. This lead to some weird but endearing quicks like Poison in Final Fight.
Apparently, I cannot actually add a proper comment when I submit a super thanks...anyway, many thanks to your contributions to the arcade world with these wonderful histories! Even if I didn't play the game, I enjoy watching your videos! Also, Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Holy cow, that is great. I really do appreciate your generous donation. I'm glad you like my videos so much even if you don't actually play the games LOL I hope you had a Merry Christmas, thank you so much
You're the man, Pat. Hook was the second movie I ever saw in theaters and, being a boy, was awed. Game reminded me of Cutthroat Island for a variety of reasons. Rufio forever!!
This is so nice , I'm happy to see someone being positive to the SNES version, which is very underated , and gets a lot of people on youtube saying its a horrible game lol... when it's actually very good. Lovely video, thank you for covering this , it's always great to see your videos.
17:27 - Uh, actually, the music is primarily comprised of Williams' score. Only the boss theme and a couple of stages don't incorporate music from the actual movie score.
The Amiga version does have a few music tracks especially when you get to the lost boys area. It actually sounds amazing even better than the ST and DOS versions
I found this one on MAME too, and being a fan of the movie plus a big fan of Final Fight, I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed this one. I had no idea there had been so many liscensed games of this movie as it didn't seem to have been a massive success at the time. Nice choice of game to cover though, glad you did!
I decided to look up the local arcade in Parmatown Mall in Parma Ohio (think Drew Carey) Aladdin's Castle and apparently the last one of it's kind went out of business last year, 2022, and it was in Quincy, Illinois. Lots of great memories of it were had there.
The arcade game is interesting with some good brawler action combat. I forgot that was Dustin as Hook. I saw it as a kid in theaters but haven't seen it again yet. That Super Nes alternate version looks cool for a side=scroller. A helpful review. I'll try to play the home versions too. Thanks and have a great Christmas Holiday, Patman!
Loved the movie but I tend to stay away from the Video Games. Feel like the developers rush things 2 make deadlines which makes them not so great. With that said, I do rent them & I did rent the SNES version! However, I did not know about the Arcade Beat em up! How cool is that! Mind Blown or did I just lost my marbles? I did see the Hook Pinball in our Arcade & played it quite often! Each time the ball went past me I would yell, SMEEED!! Watching this makes me feel like an adult peter pan forgetting how fun it was to play these games at a younger age!
