Thank you for including dimensions! I’m new at this and it makes me crazy when creators say “just arrange it the way you like“. You’ve given me somewhere to start, at least.
Really cool cutting board w/ excellent directions on how to build it! I hope you water raised it before oiling it as it will get really fuzzy the first time it's washed.
One thing I didn’t quite understand. In the first glue up are you putting glue on the faces of the boards so that when you put them together the edges are exposed? Or vice versa?
Hi, great job, is it possible to post your dimensions you are cutting your stock? It looks like it could be 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" for the Walnut and 1 3/4 x 1" for the Maple. Thanks, Alistair. I love your work!!!!
Thanks, Great video. I'm just starting out in woodworking since I retired. Where can I purchase hardwoods and exotic woods in sizes to start making cutting boards. I have only found 3/4" x 2" x 14"
I used a 2in spiral bit router bit. The exact one i used can be found on Amazon through the following affiliate link: amzn.to/2SjLpok, hope this helps!
I’m new at all of this so please excuse the question. This is a face grained cutting board if I’m understanding so the end grains are glued up. I’m hoping to make this for my first board. Thank you for sharing and great video
I used titebond III for the glue ups. I haven't noticed any problems with the glue up yet, but because they are end grain joints they won't be as strong. It is something to be careful about. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I noticed you glued the endgrain together and I thought it would be more stable and stronger if you glued the edge grain together. Otherwise it's a cool looking board.
Very nice cutting board. Question, on your second glue up, it appears that you glued up end-grain to end-grain (sort of). Any concerns with this glue up eventually failing?
Thanks! That's right, it was an end to end glue up which isn't the strongest joint. I made sure to use lots of glue since much of it would be absorbed. Even so the glue up failing is a possibility. I haven't noticed any problems yet, but it will be something to watch out for.
The actual measurements of the rough lumber don't really matter too much so long as you can get the pieces from them. I used 8/4 walnut and 4/4 maple. Hope this helps and good luck!
Before gluing I lined them all up and staggered them at a 35 degree angle. This is because it's the same angle I cut all my strips at in the next step, so it will result in the least amount of waste. Hope this helps!
Bonjour, j'ai admiré votre travail! pourriez vous, s'il vous plaît, me donner les dimensions métriques? je voudrais asseyes de le faire! salutation de la France
When you're finished sanding, mist the entire piese with water ina spray bottle and allow it to dry. Sand one last time with 320 and then do the oil treatment. This extra step keeps the cutting board perfectly smooth the first time it gets washed.
Mineral oil does NOT dry. If you want the base finish to dry and seal the end grain, consider using tung oil or boiled linseed oil. Top off with a beeswax-based cutting board finish. This top coat will have to be renewed occasionally depending on use.
Gorgeous work. I see you made this video about a year ago. How’s the board holding up? I’ve heard a lot of concern over edge grain glue ups but have seen some videos comparing the relative strength and it seems that the concern is unwarranted. Wondering what your experience has been?
Thanks! While the board hasn't been used very much it doesn't show signs of coming apart. I haven't noticed any new gaps forming and it and still feels solid. So far so good. Hope this helps.
@nstickmd I dont think thats specific to all (or most) edge grain glue ups. But i think that would apply in this case when you essentially make a "multiple cuts" like this where to get the desired patttern, you're gluing end grain to end grain. This is still not recommended. There are some tips that say to basically "pre-glue" the end grain a few minutes before doing the actual glue up to try and get a little bit of a seal on that end grain, but i would only feel comfortable doing that on end grain to edge grain. Edge and face grain are the ideal gluing surfaces. I personally would not recommend doing an end grain to end grain glue up like this to get this pattern. If you really like the pattern, you should just make the board an end grain board.
An excellent piece of work! But the video was spoilt by the addition of unnecessary music, which was an intrusive annoyance - especially when you were talking over it.
I took some pictures from your video and went out and showed the shop 🏬 owner he also makes wood 🪵 stuff 🚪🪑🪟🪞but he refused saying it is very difficult not working always. He said it is very difficult, we cannot do such a thing. ☹️

What was the finished size?
During first glue up are you gluing the end grain or the face grain together? It’s hard to tell. Thanks for the video.

Very beautiful work, thanks for sharing it with us 🙏🏼
Thanks!
Caleb, I was just wondering why you didn't make the board end grain?
Excelente trabajo, te pasaste Maestro 👏👏👏
Felicitaciones 🤠😇😎

¡Muchas gracias!
Thank you for the tutorial, well done!
Much appreciated!
Number of clamps needed for a given project: Every clamp you own - plus 1.

great project and tutorial! turned out stunning! 😍👏
Thank you, much appreciated!
Beautiful work.
Thanks!
When you say quarter is it inch?
Nice looking board what size strips did you start with?
Great job again.
Thank you!
And can i use cherry instead of maple?
Absolutely! Any woods of contrasting color will work.
You said "edge grain board to you rotated the pieces at 1:38 so the edge is up". But you glued the edges. Were those edge up or face up? Thanks
I’m with you. They are still face up.

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't have any written dimensions, Although the dimensions I used should be provided in the video.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Just blew my mind that you use your router as a jointer. Amazing idea! What kind of bit is that?
Can't take credit for it but it certainly does work the edges of shorter boards! I used a spiral bit.
Question, what is the thickness of the board?
Thanks, Great video.
I'm just starting out in woodworking since I retired. Where can I purchase hardwoods and exotic woods in sizes to start making cutting boards. I have only found 3/4" x 2" x 14"
Thanks! I buy my hardwoods from a local hardwood dealer. I'd recommend googling and try to find one in your area.
Amazon
at what degrees did you saw the bevel of the board?thank U 4 your Answer 🙏😊
It was cut at a 35 degree angle.
Can I buy one..
What bit did you use on the router to do the jointing?
I used a 2in spiral bit router bit. The exact one i used can be found on Amazon through the following affiliate link: amzn.to/2SjLpok, hope this helps!

That is correct about the grain. Good luck making it!
C’est excellent j’adore ton travail et c’est super beau bravo 👍👍👏👍
Merci beaucoup!
What glue do you use?
Are the end grain joints strong enough?
Great presentation and verble is good and thank you for not including machine noise

How long does it stay in the mineral oil?
I let mine sit for a couple minutes.
@@CalebsFineWoodworking thank you😀
Hi, congrats for your video and your work of course! I just wanna know in what liquid you put it in the Wood piece. Thank u!
Thank you! I used a mineral oil. The one I use can be found here, mineral oil: amzn.to/2RSjEmk. Hope this helps!
@@CalebsFineWoodworking thanks

how long did you soak it in mineral oil? And did you let it naturally dry or wipe dry before applying cutting board conditioner? TIA
I let it sit a couple of minutes in the oil and then let it air dry after wiping off all the extra.

I plan to make this for a school project, would you happen to know the original measurements of the wood?
The actual measurements of the rough lumber don't really matter too much so long as you can get the pieces from them. I used 8/4 walnut and 4/4 maple. Hope this helps and good luck!
@@CalebsFineWoodworking After cutting your stock, what were the dimensions you cut your individual pieces into?

muito obrigado!
Great Job..Caleb.
What was the final dimensions of the board after all was done..
Thanks
Thanks! The cutting board measures approximately 11.5 inches wide by 18 inches long and 1.75 inches thick.
Thank you
Prior to glue up, what method was used when staggering the strips

One of my favorite parts: busting out the gallon jug of glue! 😆
Ay congrats on hitting 1k 😄
Thanks man!

You can never have enough wood glue
P.S. how much did it cost you for all of the wood
Beautiful
Has the glue up failed to date?
It's still holding up well!
What kind of wood please???
He mentioned he used walnut & maple
Beautiful!!!

what is the exact degree achieve the 3d Chevron
Any degree should work, it will just affect how steep or shallow the 3d effect is.
Looks good. Gluing end grain to end grain won't last tho

Ur work is superb just try a bit of more better editing and u will start getting more views and likes
And try to make video quality 1080 p and aspect ratio a bit bigger
The thumb nail was cool tho
Thanks for the feedback!
Editing and video quality both seemed fine to me. Watched several vids for this style of cutting board, easily the best presentation so far.
