I've shaved my hair tight since I was in my early 20's because of the comfort and convenience , No Thank you!
You know what, Jay, messing up and having to learn lessons the hard way is the best learning experience in my opinion. When I was a kid I bricked the family computer when I was trying to upgrade it or something and we had to get a replacement under warranty. I never made that mistake again because that screw up was traumatizing and I never forgot it. And I've repeated that my whole life. But you definitely fixed your mistake and made it work and that's all that matters.
Thanks for the words of encouragement
"Don't think, it only hurts the ball club." Crash Davis, catcher for the Durham Bulls.
The movie: Bull Durham
Kevin Costner as Crash.
Much love and blessings to all ❤️
Stay safe everyone 🤘😎
Yes!
You're doing a great job with this, Jay! I love that you're talking us through all the decisions you're making and talking through the reasons you're making them. I also love that you're willing to let us know that you are sometimes having to fudge things. Plus, showing us your mistakes is really helpful, so that you aren't the only one learning from them -- we get to learn too! (BTW, I'm building two horse barns by myself right now, and it's taking me FOREVER -- I definitely feel your pain at having to work alone most of the time!)
Good luck!
The shingles alone left on the roof would be enough they are holding it up anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 inch witch would change ur slope ,
REMEMBER EVERYONE WHEN BUILDING ALWAYYYSSS WOOD TO WOOD / FRAMING TO FRAMING !!! Always …
Uploaded 51 seconds ago! That must be some kind of personal record.
I appreciate you showing projects that non pros want to do around the house.
Stephanie…the helper we all wish we had!!
Nice it's looking good! birds mouth whatevers blow my mind too... I bet stephanie loves your imitation of her voice 🤣
Oh yeah she loved it! Ha ha
To get the angle of the birds mouth first draw a plum mark just like at the top and slid down a flat 2x6 down that line until the 2x6 first touches the bottom of the rafter
with the moss on the roof, one thing i learned YEARS ago, if you install strips of copper sheeting about a foot wide every few courses of shingles, with ha;d of the copper exposed to the elements, as it ages it will develop copper sulfate which will keep moss from growing on your roof.
Jason, thanks for being vulnerable. Simply the best kind of video. I’m with Steph, no heights for me neither. I get 10’ off the ground and I’m white knuckle both hands. I don’t even think about it either. Just happens. If I were to get up there, you would be calling the fire company to get me down. Imagine that. Can’t get past it either. Keep the humor alive my friend. Well done.
Thanks for watching! I’ll keep Stephanie on the ground
I just found your channel after watching Perkins bros. I’ve had vertigo and a fear of heights since the 1980’s so I couldn’t do the roof work you guys do. Great channel great work thanks.
Bull Durham. Great movie 👍
Yes!
46 years I cut rafters, thanks for teaching me some new ways. :)
I tell my younger people all the time “you are going to make mistakes that’s how you learn,I’ve been doing this 25+ years and I still make mistakes;you’re always learning
I love how you’re thinking and talking everything out. Birds mouths and angles confuse me and this really helps seeing how you work through it! Thanks a bunch!
I find these kinds of videos much more useful and interesting than videos that just bash everything out without any discussion of even issues they are trying to avoid. Seeing you talk and work your way to the cause and solution is great even if a little kluge in the end. It’s also funny to watch someone so close in age to me using slang from our younger days 👍
lol. Thanks!
It is almost perfect.I am sure will be perfect next time.If there is next time.
Just Stephanie ? Lol .... Your fans sit up and take notice when your beautiful wife comes to help . I love Perkins Brothers Builders but they have NO Stephanie ! We all learn by doing and you my friend are honest enough to show it . Keep buiding I love your show !
Steph followed the first and most important DIY rule… stop when you hit your skill limit or fear max tolerance and call in a professional.
Great job for showing that lesson
Thanks for having my back David. Jason just made fun of me. 😂
I was yelling at you to crown them.....nobody ever listens.........😂😂😂 Y'all take care.
I wish I would’ve heard it!
Whatever it ends up, it's closed enough to me! LOL!
I love the contrast in professionalism between this channel & Eric's. That was a nice 200 IQ play, intentionally cutting the wrong angle and then showing us how fix it. I see you out there.
How dare you imply jay is anything but an absolute professional!! 🤣🤪
I wish!!!
I’m guessing you’ve never built anything. No one intentionally cuts the wrong angle lumbers expensive
@@joegosselin2888smh
Jay, I need you to pay attention at work bud. 😂😂😂 love the videos!
I just finished a 12x10 shed a few months ago and by far the hardest thing to do was cut the bird's mouth correctly. afterwards I took the hand planer and smooth out the bows.
I subscribe just for the slow motion leaf blowing!
Sweet!
Well done Jason mate ,so you dod pay attention in school .looking good let’s do a good job cheers 👍👍👍🙏❤️😁😁🦘🇦🇺🇺🇸💪
"WELL... That's one way to do it!" You're making it too difficult for yourself. Put the board up there and scribe the line where you need to cut. If everything works, cut the others to match. Hey, buddy, you'll get it...............
You guys have the same sponsors and support each other’s work. It’s almost like you and the Perkins brothers are building a broadcasting network for building shows.
Next time, just mock up a rafter on the roof you’re piggy backing onto how it would be if it were installed. Then take a scrap board and lay it on the roof next to your rafter following the pitch of the existing roof and scribe a line. That’s your angle. No math at all.
Pro tip! Wish you were there helping me
@@Building_Jays_Way You got this! I’m a plumber anyway, that was my one good framing trick 😅
Love the comments. . . Watching you make human errors and going back to the drawing board and fixing them until their correct gives me hope for myself. Love your show!
Awesome. Thanks.
Jay loved the video. Stephanie, smart lady, not only a beautiful lady smart also. A Pharmacist very smart 👍
Love the channel❤❤❤❤
Heel cut is square to your seat cut, for your birds mouth....
More power to your channel👌👌👌
Get rid of that square . Use a framing square draw the birds mouth first and the put a nail in th high spot of the birds mouth and hook your tape on the nail and measure to the top of the plumb cut
The angle was different because the point on the roof became the pivot point that was created when you cut the birds mouth, which dropped that end, thus changing the angle ever so slightly.
jay i’m a framer tip for u is next time find the best 2x8 to be your pattern rafter and use it to mark all of the other rafters looking good though 👍🫡
Hey mate , from Australia 🇦🇺 here ...
Reminds me of some joke about raking leaves in a tree! Fun build Jay Thanks For entertaining us!
Love this! The world needs more Jays! Honest, hardworking, resilient and willing! Keep it coming!
Nice to hear! . Thanks. !!
Good work, best regards from Brazil!! Until later.
Ok, I’ve just learnt how to attain angel without scratching a big hole In my head….. oh liking this ⚒️🔨
Your employees! 😂 I think you forgot who the boss is.
In my experience, band boards run horizontal on the foundation or at the gable ends and under a soffit to divide sidings material.
In your case, it would be called a nailer or even a ridge.
Joist are used for floor system or ceilings. You are working on Rafters.
When you check your plumb in relation to the nail in the foundation check the end of the 6x6 that is horizontal to the nail in the foundation. You set the post with a 4 foot level any variation in the post outside the 4 foot level location when you plumbed them could through you bottom and top off.
In your case for establishing the rafter. Get the angle for the top. Cut the the angle set the top on the nailer at the top and tack as close to the end as you can . The bottom end can be tacked to the side of the 6x6 at what ever height and depth you decide to make the birds mouth , usually 1-1/2 deep. Then just trace around the 6x6 and determine your overall length from the 6x6 make a plumb line . Take the board down and cut the length and the birds mouth and you should be go to go. Basically what you did at the end where you placed the board on the end of your 6x6. You should have screwed the rafter to the side of the 6x6 and traced the back side ad the 6x6.
If you have any dips/ humps in the old roof your rafter lengths and angles may be off.
You get an A for all your efforts!
Great job Jason! I enjoyed watching you calculating your angles for your bird mouths! You made it work and that’s the main thing! 👍🏻
O no this guy is building your houses.. I got to see Jamie, Erik's comment's
They loved it!!!!
I
I think that will work, that is the spirit.
Oh gosh Jay that was laborious😂 but funny jeep going
When the video is sped up, Stephanie looks like she's dancing while waiting for Jay to take some measurements 😄
Lol
Ha! I thought the same thing 😂
I am also a Nuc, so I just use 'rad-con math" and that is close enough.
It's really something that you guys actually help each other to make money like your ads Perkins are helping you with your ads which is making you money that doesn't happen too many places
1/2 of a degree can make a world of difference. I think you definitely learned that in this building. Keep up the good work and you'll get it one of these days soon. Just put in your time and stay humble. We've all made these mistakes trust me. 🤟🤟🤟
This episode cracked me up. Last winter while I was preparing to build my 16X36 foot shop I built the roof trusses in my carport. My plan was a 6-12 pitch. After mutch flipping and flopping and flapping of my try square, I built 24 trusses. I was so proud of myself, even I couldn"t stand me!! They ended up 8-12 pitch!! Had a neighbor kid who works for a building contractor, along with a bunch of triends from church, help me install yhe trusses. Every time I looked over at him he was just standing there shaking his head!! I feel your pain Jay!!
Makes me feel better!! Thanks.
Looks like you guys have yourself a dingo/Carolina Dog with Charlie. Looks similar to mine and has the same mannerisms.
I'm keeping mental notes in case I have a project similar.
And this guy does framing for a living 😂
With all due respect. I don’t just frame for a living. I do everything!! I have only been doing this for about 5 years( I’m a real estate agent) and as far as my knowledge what I was doing was completely correct I just had the wrong pitch on my roof. I was having fun and trying to give cool content. Thanks for commenting!
@@Building_Jays_Way Hey Jay! I'm not sure why, but UA-cam, despite me being in Scotland, recommended the PBB channel a couple of years ago and I've been watching it since. Love just watching you guys as a team, really.
I remember your own channel being mentioned at one point but never got a chance to look it up until it appeared in a link today and I have been enjoying this series on my day off.
I just knew there'd be a comment like the one from Toady in the comments but I love the fact that you left it all in and explained to us your reasoning for it all. It was great to see the school geometry come to use and as someone who does DIY, the problem solving is invaluable.
Keep up the good work. I'm off to plough the other 5 videos now to see the finished product. Hoping for more Charlie in the vids...what a lovely pup! (and more Stephanie too, I guess. haha!)
That's definitely one way to do it! Hehe...
Awesome of you to show all of these “struggles”, will help a lot of people.!
10:19 Stephanie, thank you so much for the work you do a person Like me that relies on their medication. Because i'm Epileptic the work that pharmacists do is sometimes Overlooked Thank you so much. Sometimes people need to hear it, thank you.
I will make sure Stephanie sees this! That is very nice thank you
A ball of string is priceless for arbitrary work
Cheers from Brazil buddy I appreciate your job
You can put a piece of wood next to the board you want to birds mouth, scribe it and then cut it and it will fit.
Can’t wait to read Arlo‘s comment
The seat cut to the top of the rafter is known as height above plate. That is what must be the same on all rafters to keep them in plane.
Roof pitch math still gets me. I used a scrap piece wood, sketch, cut, repeat till I got when I had to figure it out.
Buddy need to tell perkin brothers you need a raise buddy
Yes!!!
Great build. This might help you on figuring out the cuts on the rafter with no math involved. Place your rafter on top of your band board. Then scribe a line on your rafter by holding a scrap lumber against the rafter and flat on the band board; this will give you angle for the roof cut. Do the same thing on the girder.
Pro tip!
Makes it super easy with no math
Jason--don't you remember being in this Perkins Builder Brothers video: "Tips and Tricks: Porch Roof Edition!"
Must have missed that one!! Lol
Great movie!
Gotta love fall! Blew my entire yard last week, the next morning I went outside to admire my work, and it looked like I never cleaned it, lol! DOH!!!
I saw an old timer here on youtube about 8 yrs ago, and he said i got no time to math and meassure! So i scribe my work!... built a lil shed, i bought my rafter on the side of the 4x4 post drew out the bird mouth and cut perfect.
Yeah that wood have been easier. A little harder by yourself.
Love your channel and I am showing my boys why math is important. 😂
I am a finish carpenter. So, I would have put the board in place and 'winged it'. Easier.
the struggle is real
Don’t beat yourself up, just keep in mind Arlo was once a young carpenter that struggled. With experience good or bad you learn!
Thanks!
Hope you remembered to put up the heel band board.
It wasn't up at the end of the video.😊
Yeah I forgot it! But it is going in.
To stop moss growing on roof get a 2" band of copper and fix it to the ridge. Rain washes copper off and and this kills most unwanted moss and lycan
Pro tip!!
Hey! Your garage roof is growing green stuff. Mine is too, so I got a vid that suggested White Vinegar in water to kill the moss. Also mine has mold I’m sure so using Clorox similarly is good.
on the birdsmouth cut the long side and short side are 90 deg to each other, you were cutting the short side 90 deg to the bottom of the board.
Yes I figured that out.
I like that your real and show mistakes also, most people are top round or lie about it. Looking good to be doing by yourself. Everything is 2x as hard by yourself.
bull durham "Women get wooly!"
lol!!!
SUGGESTION, PUT METAL FLASHING BEHIND THE LEDGER BOARD ON ROOF. KEEP WATER FROM RUNNING UNDER THE LEDGER. FUN VIDEO. Couldn’t you hear me yelling at you ⁉️👍🔨 Vinny 🇺🇸
Awesome video! I would recommend a little lavalier you can clip onto your shirt since you are filming yourself so we can hear a little better when you're away from the camera
Yes, I bought one but the problem is it’s not working very well, so I’m still trying to hash that all out!
Jay, I have suffered this same problem every stinking time I try to do it. The birds mouth, should be super simple but stumps me every time. Good job resolving to get it right.
It isn't just that it's a 2/12, you also have to cut it 90° off of the top line of the 6×6... I think. lol
I love that you are actually drawing with Crayola.
I love when Stephanie helps
So do I!
Bull Durham, best baseball movie ever.
Good luck with that! If told my wife to do things she would tell me to take a flying leap at the moon! I have to ask politely!
Thinking way too much, you got this! Of course I know you have already done this but I couldn't bite my tongue, disabled carpenter and I have been watching the Perkins site for a while now, mostly because it reminds me of my guys and the work we did, we were a custom home builder also and we had a 4 to 5 man grew that was very tight knit and we had a lot of fun and we even had a older gentleman that was awesome to have around just for the knowledge and experience. I was going to suggest that you nail your ledger or band board through your truss over the old roof with the caulk behind each of the fasteners. Find the first one and then you are off to the races. And you can take 5 minutes of your time and actually watch the process of figuring out the roof cuts. I like watching the two old timers that hand nail everything and they dress alike. If I find out what site it is I'll send it to you and you can see if it helps. Doesn't hurt to ask a dumb question. But good job all in all.
Yeah man!!! thanks for this big big video! Hi Steph!!!!
Hi!
At 23:50 it will be 90deg from the line not the lumber
For the bird’s mouth to line up the way you were hoping for, I would have taken one of the 6 x 6 cutoffs and sit it on end at the outside of the deepest part of your bird’s mouth so you could put lines on the joist where you want them. The difference in the overall angle up on the garage would be negligible. Regardless, it looks great. Looking forward to seeing the completed build. FYI, I’m a DIYer. I’m about to start a 12’ x 32’ storage building (lean-to style), so I’ve been watching tons of UA-cam videos on lean-to rafters/joists. I feel like I’ve learned just enough to be dangerously stupid. Good luck 👍🏻
Ha! That last line is definitely the quote of the day...I laughed out loud on that one.
Well your helper was judging you hope you give her space in the shed. I thought Joooonnnoooo!was here to help...call in a favour with cut man Arlo...😂
You really made this much harder than it had to be. But if you dont have a carpenters square or know the correct pitch makes it pure comedy.
Jayman
So far I really like your channel much, much, much better than PBB. You explain what you're going to do and you do it. No blah blah BS blah. Also, please show the finished product, you're bosses don't seem to do that.
I'm a retired engineer and don't really need all the rhetoric.
Plus, you have a really pretty helper (no not the old man, lol).
Keep it up young man
Thanks!!
Just a little observation….2.5 / 12 pitch @ 24” of. Is gonna be hell of a load when it snows….that flat of a pitch at that span, I’d be doing 12” oc. JS….
We don’t get a lot of snow but if we do I’ll just throw Steph up there to shovel! Lol
@@Building_Jays_Way , yea, let us know how that turns out!🤣
hang in there buckaroo 🤠
Your idea to use "Zip Board" is a good one it would hold everything together. Poor Steph you could see that she tried to get on the roof, some people just can't. I had a neighbor that if he was on a ladder and his feet were 4 - 5 rungs high, his knees would be knocking. I used to draw all of my plans when doing remodeling and even done some for family and friends. That way it is easier to get angles right. It's looking good Jay, once the roof is on everything else just is plain sailing 👍 Take care and be safe, regards to you and the family 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨
I'm convinced that mistakes teach far more than just observing the right way (just more expensive lol). The indomitable attitude is refreshing to see and yields much better satisfaction when complete, keep up the good work Jay.
Nice to hear thank you!
Man, you're my kind of builder!!! Love it
Love watching you Jay but the commercials are SO many and SO long, and that I cannot stay with you. Wish you the best.
The commercials are put in there by UA-cam. I really don’t control that. Sorry I know you can do a premium subscription and it will not show the commercials. I think hate to see you leave good luck to you
