That stagger is called a book! When working with shingles, you can use a hook blade - it makes cutting the shingles much easier

Cut the tabs off your starter shingles and get that tar strip all the way to the bottom, especially important on that low of a pitched roof.

Looking good. What I usually do with shingles is on the next roll after applying a full sheet, is cut it half way instead of staggering them each roll. Kinda like tile work. In some cases the other half of the shingle will be used every other roll. You save material that way. Also, roofing felt would have worked just fine. The amount of nails, man. Haha, overall, awesome job!!!! Love your videos man. Keep up the great work!!!.

Roofer here 😊 1 critical mistake, shingle on a slope lower than 2/12. Guaranteed hidden leak instantly, you may see it on the underside in about 4-6 years and a urgent repair needed with 8-10 years. If using shingles, that zip ice and water would have been the way to go by using sashco to seal off all the nails. That would have lasted you 20+ years. Shout out to Charlotte, and Asheville vertical homes!

I just had a friend build his father in law a patio cover. Everything was fine up to the beams. He then placed the ceiling joists on the face of the beams on both sides. He didn't put any hangers either. No blocking in the middle. No knee braces on the post to beams. Didn't anchor the 4x4 post holding the whole thing up. And thennnnnn he puts shingles on it. Like, come on!!!!!
      Ask me for advice.

You can install a little copper, zinc, or galvanized metal strip at the ridge to combat the growth of moss. I think "Ask This Old House" has a video on it.

Great job on the addition I’m sure it won’t be an issue with how you did your stagger on the shingles but just fyi every manufacturer has their own stagger sizes and nailing patterns that they recommend and it’s on the fine print on every bundle wrapping

Jay, you are doing a great job....a suggestion maybe you spray that existing older roof area on the garage with some of that "Spray and Forget" mold and mildew shingle cleaner spray.....that "Spray and Forget" shingle cleaner works really good, but it's a bit pricey.

Great work man, little efficiency tip. There is a flat part on the top of that bostitch nailer that allows you to butt it up to the little lip on the shingle below and then place the next row above on that flat part. Let’s you line up the reveal on the next row perfect without having to put the gun down! Awesome videos, keep it up 👍👍👍

About the only thing I'd have done different is every 4-5 courses, run a length of copper sheeting so that about 2-3 inches is exposed, the copper sulfate that forms will help slow down the growth of moss that you can see on the original garage roof. It's something I picked up from a crew i was watching roof condos building in a wooded development back in the 80's when I was drywalling the same condos. I'd watch them while I was taking my breaks.

Pro tip! You want to cut the tabs off the three tab shingle starters and put the tar strip at the bottom and to the rake edge to prevent up lift on the shingles on top.
Make your reference lines always from the starting point. If you do have an accumulative error doing it your way will just move it further up the roof.
Architecture shingles- The nail that was near the seam in one of your rows probably happened because the cutoff you started with was different. That spot you need to cautious when placing that one nail.

    Hope this helps…
I know Huber states that deck protection is not required…but it actually is required by the asphalt shingle roof covering system’s manufacturer …the zip panels are an approved substrate for a asphalt shingle roof covering system but somewhere it’s been led to believe that deck protection is not required but it is…zip will get you dried in but that’s all…
Keep in mind when using asphalt shingles for your roof covering…a 2/12 is the minimum pitch…and that’s installing a leak barrier on the entire roof deck….

The starter strip is there because it has a tar strip Down so when you add the first row the starter row glues down the ends of the first row. To do that on a regular shingle you cut the tabs off straight across and flip the shingle around and have the tar side down along the bottom to stick to the shingle above and slow water from getting under the first row.
