This video documents the process of excavating and laying out the footings for a house foundation. The crew uses a laser level to ensure all footings are dug to the proper depth. They mark out the footing locations, dig with an excavator, and square up the corners by hand. Reinforcing rebar is cut and bent into shape. Grade stakes are installed to lay out the wall locations. Some footings need extra soil removed to properly center the walls. By catching errors in the layout, extra work is avoided. Once the footings are fully excavated, the site is prepared for laying the concrete.

6 months ago you made WE BUILT IT.. and it PAID!!! 1:10:49 that film film editing was❤❤❤ Please use it now and then In every video. Even drive in a nail looks cool. And great for funny segments trying to look amazing 😅 love your crew and personality
working with the old school method is better than the gym 🤣
Believe it or not i learned to build.my own 1300 sq foot house from watching all of your videos. Designed it and built completely by myself
woah, nice job! I hope they see this
Massive respect Eric.
Damn good job! Did you record your experience?
I have never seen anyone like the Perkins bros. they are awe inspiring and always right on the money. I too have learned tons from watching these guys.
Did you use the zip system and lexel? :)
Flour is a genius idea. It’s so visible. This house is going to be awesome! As a 22 year old general contractor, I can’t wait for the day I get to take on a project this size!
It's not a genious idea, it's dumb. They could have used lime, it's very visible and it's not a food ingredient.
I always get jealous when I see you only go down 12" for footings instead of 44" here in Montana. Then I remind myself that we don't have termites and that makes me happy again.
Normally 6ft in the uk !
Can you not go even less in Montana with shallow frost protected foundation?
@@J_Money1 16 inches below grade insulated plus 32 inches lateral insulation works everywhere in Montana according to the charts.
FYI, next time you want to see if something fits, place a 4x8 sheet on the ground and do an aerial photo with your drone. Then you can photoshop that known dimension around to see if it all fits before you set pins and such. This helps on uneven terrain as all you have to do is make sure the face of the 4x8 sheet is level.
Unless you know exactly what you are doing, lenses induce distortion. There are methods of making things appear completely flat so that one can trace in CAD.
Great idea... would there be any problems with the viewing angle?
@@d3lsl0w I do CAD for a living, I know...
@hebdschnure This is for the initial layout, not for actual locations.. Take the picture from high enough, and right over the center should be just fine.
Brilliant idea! Saved to memory bank.
What a revealing shot at 25:00. Who are the two guys correcting the footing trench with shovels?. THE TWO OWNERS of the company. That tells you a whole lot about ownership and leadership!! Max, you couldn't have picked a better company than PBB to intern with. Keep up the good work. With much respect to the brothers. Wrote my Certification for General Carpenter in 1976.
Wow, what an opportunity to have a client with his own excavation/earthworks company. Not only do you have experts doing all of the very complex earthworks and footing for that incredibly complex house layout (even clearing out all the soil to get it our of your way), you get to watch and learn sooo much from true pros! Man...if you could even find that kind of training somewhere you couldn't afford to put your entire crew through the training. What a gift. That apprentice is truly getting his summer's worth of learning and experience! And of course you're building a relationship with someone who will be an amazing contact for both subbing out complex jobs to and consulting with on excavation and footing jobs you're doing yourselves.
What an exciting project. That house with that view is going to be absolutely amazing...
That's a great point about the training cost.
This house and that view are what dreams are made of! GORGEOUS! 😍
My father built swimming pools for 20 years and he used flour to layout the pools before digging so home owners could have a visual of what it would look like. It was a great way to help them see it.
Jonno coked up. Priceless.
You know how them boys get when they get a little flour in ‘em!
I love that Jamie said doing sound.
I do sound at my church and people look at me crazy when I say that but I knew exactly what he was talking about. #letjamietalk 😂
Yes sir! I have two church gigs and also mix for a local sound company. General contractor for my day job. Small world
Having just dug my own footings recently for the first time I can really appreciate watching a pro work. It's one thing to understand what needs to happen, it's a completely different thing to get the machine to do it, and then a whole other level to get it to do it smoothly and efficiently.
So excited for your new project.
I am a Contractor and i enjoy your videos. Good job Boys 👏👏
Another cool home owner for this build. It’s awesome to watch the heavy equipment crew working on site alongside you guys. The house plan look amazing and challenging, you will raise to the occasion. ❤
Looks like a BIG house. In the southern UK, most footings have to be 3 feet / 1 metre deep. I was managing my friends non-conforming building repurposing. The contractors were there for 4 days and I dismissed them, for only going down 1 foot to avoid them moving a drain. Daft thing was they put a piece of wood panelling over it in an attempt to hide it. Once again in the UK we had to check the noise on our gearboxes, using a sound meter. At that time we had to be 1.5 metres from the gearbox to record the noise level. Take care and be safe 👍
Thanks for your videos. I’m a disabled veteran homebound and I really enjoyed watching your videos. Makes me feel like I’m back at the job. Keep it up.
Man. This is going to be such an amazing thing to see come together guys!!!
As an ex-builder here in Oz, we always used lime for mark outs. Even if it got wet it was still easily visible (not sure if Johno would survive lime though🤣) I sure miss my building days & even though I am near retirement (& currently unemployed) I've been considering pulling the nail bag back on even if it is just part time building maintenance. Been looking forward to this build since seeing the plans, I love different stuff! 👍
99% of our houses are slab on grade here in Phoenix, Arizona. We just drop our grades on the outside of buildings, patios are poured 4-6” lower than top of interior slab, grading drops a couple inches off of that. We mostly have stucco though, so as long as the weep screed is not buried we dont have to worry as much. Very dry climate as well. In most buildings this ends up as having 6- 12” of stem wall or side of the slab (if monolithic) showing above grade before you hit weep screed for the stucco. As long as the grade flows away from the house we rarely have issues.
Isn’t Jason now the oldest guy on site? “We need you to bend 165 rebar poles” 😂
He likes to joke that he's not but he's clearly in pretty good shape. He can handle it 💪
Terrific video guys, and I know many folks will love this build. And kudos to the Perkins brothers for bringing on some summer help and teaching real world skills to an aspiring builder/engineer/architect…. Terrific. I’ll watch it twice!
It doesn't matter of course but, I just don't understand why I love this channel so much. Whatever you guys are doing please never stop!!
And a shout-out to Eric for creating everything, but also Jason. I feel he doesn't get enough credit for all his silliness, jokes, dancing etc. This just wouldn't be what it is without him, or anyone else on the team of course :). So thank you guys so much!
Jason is a tank. Might take a minimum 2 guys to replace the muscle he brings to the job. Always doing the toughest jobs. I know they don't 'make' him and would all gladly do it themselves, but he always seems willing and is just so much more capable.
He brings a lot to the site with his strength and spirit lol.
Just in case you're not aware, he does have his own channel you can check out where he does his own projects with his wife as well as behind the scenes of PBB projects. It's called Building Jays Way.
Welcome onboard Max , Max you need to get into the habit of protecting your face , head and neck from the sun it is brutal more care you take early in your career less hassle you have later on Carcinoma is not fun and can be prevented. Keep trucking guys
Liking the slightly longer reel, the home owner being a earth works contractor certainly made short work and a excellent job of digging out the footings. Swish work Perkins Crew, cheers for the reel Eric.
I always tell clients that it never hurts to spend extra money on footings, especially when you’re building a house on engineered fill or on a hill like this one. Another way to really make the house bulletproof is to drill small caissons in the footings down to bedrock, and then tie those in with the footing steel. But some clients don’t understand the complexities of building a home in the hills. You should invest in a lenker rod with a sliding cut and fill tape on it that way you can carry the elevations around with you on the rod. Just makes it easier, instead of always having to figure out finish floor, sub grade, etc, it’s all right there. Great video guys, thanks! 💪👊👍
Very excited for this series!
The way you guys feel watching those expert excavators is how us viewers feel watching you guys!
Great job Guys !! I think this will be a long process.Nothing You can't handle !! I LOVE YOU ALL @ P.B.B. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Happiness is having a customer who is a dirt contractor. Two machinists running while your setting up layouts and his crew is also doing erosion mitigation i.e. planning grass.
I'm only half way through, but got to say the descriptions of how the laser level works was well described! 👍 Although I found that knocking the legs has just as much an impact on a laser as an optical level, you just won't notice the potential change in the laser level as it's automatically adjusted.... It just might not have adjusted itself to the same level, probably not much difference, but could make a difference. Great work gents!
Just something about building a home or whatever and being apart of it from start to finish, very self rewarding feeling
I dream of working with an efficient crew like this. Last cpl months I've been building alone and miss the jokes and fun.
so stoked for this build!!
This is going to be such an incredible series. And dang, sure makes life easier when the expert excavators are on site 🤣
So excited for your new project
Built many foundations for modular homes in SW Virginia and NW Tennessee and our man who does our excavation has a hell of a time digging through all the slate rock and it beats his equipment to death. The hardest muddy part of the job, after that it all seems like cake.
My mistake NE Tennessee we work around about a hundred mile radius of Bristol TN.
Footings dug in 1 day, that's awesome guys. Thanks for sharing.
Jono talks the least and does the most. I like him
Good afternoon my friends. Watching from Darlington, South Carolina. This going to be a beautiful home. Love watching you guys creat amazing homes. Thank you for being awesome guys. Hugs
Great to see the team work and the thought that's gone into the work and looking forward beyond the footings. Looking forward to the build. Great video
I love your crew. Their demeanor, and craftsmanship are at a level that other contractors/builders should strive to be. Looking forward to more content.
Just wish I could have you do my next build in Florida.
That view is absolutely breath taking!!
Construction of a MEGA sized Modern Home. AMAZING
So much to take in on this episode. The view ❤ the amazing help (from the client) with earth work is such a bonus and hopefully your getting some great hints on how to work the earth. Hope Max realises just how fortunate he is and is taking it all in, I'm sure there are lots who would like to be in his place 😉 thanks Eric for another great episode 🎉
Amazing, awesome layout work.
Can't wait to see the end result! That site location is amazing!!
I so enjoy your videos, Brings back memories of when I was a carpenter in the trades.
Thank you for sharing
I’m so excited for this build!
Beautiful scenery
this gonna be a long ass series. good luck boys
I love watching you guys build.
Thanks for the show guys 🍻
Wish everyone builds houses with as much thought and caution as you guys. Thanks for building.
Man, this build is going to be so awesome! Can't wait for the next episode!
21:55 Saint Jaime got his halo on! 😄
Gosh this place is going to be awesome with majestic views. Ready to do some more learning.
Loving the new build, it may be an idea to get this chap to do all of your digging. In the future. The time you would save in having a professional digging, the footings against the hire of a digger for a week may be advantageous unless of course you use Jasons bulldozer shuffle, Move, LOL. Like everybody else I’m watching your channel from the UK it’s just bloody different how you guys do it over there?
Trick for bucket down smoothing: set the bucket height and bladed perfectly using the leading edge, then simply back up gently.
Fun job. Hope we get to see the whole thing.
You guys continue to inspire and amaze. The way you have the determination to follow the path that you know to be the best in construction. Simply awe inspiring to this old dreamer.
The shape of building so interesting 👍
Just love you guys lots of jokes missing arlo like crazy but just love the jokes great team 😂
I miss Arlo too. I hope he makes a guest appearance from time to time if he misses the guys.
@jamie it’s really cool watching the RTA and see how the octaves correspond into other frequency’s. That RTA app has been the best one since it came out. Best 10 bucks ever!
Jamie, not unheard of. Down in south Florida everything is CMU unfortunately in the older house it’s either plaster or just 3/4 strips up the cmu on the interior for drywall. Some new houses will be kind enough to put the treated furring strips along with the treated 1x6 down low so you have something to nail into.
This is gonna be one beautiful house!
Tim from awesome framers orders pre-bent corners from his supplier. I think he said it doesn’t cost that much more and saves a lot of time. Maybe something to think about on bigger houses like this if the cost is negligible.
Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
this is the earliest i have ever been!
For edging those trenches I like an Ace Hardwear "Ace 41.5 in. Steel Garden Spade Wood Handle" that I sharpen with a bastard file. Cuts straight lines like butter. Fabulous for cutting grass out during irrigation work, and other edging tasks.
Great video and work. Can’t say I like the home design with a weird hallway bottleneck/chokepoint in the middle, but to each their own.
Love the new build 👍
This promises to be an epic project!
The sad thing about fresh uploads is i cannot BINGE watch the entire process in one sitting, Hell am I hyped for this boys - Stay safe!
That is exactly correct! Love binging an entire build start to finish.
Going to be another great series
I love watching these videos so much
With how its cut into the hillside, it looked like that outline was superimposed onto the video rather than actually outlined.
Thought about using fiberglass rebar for grade sticks so you don't get rust creeping up in the concrete from below over time ?
Could you get a striper for ball fields and just fill it with flour? I just took a look and not very expensive.
Fun to watch you work as a fun team.
this house is gonna turn out sick!
North Carolina is a beautiful state based on these mountain views. Can’t wait to visit someday.
I've always used upside down paint for ground work but I am liking the flower. It shows better to the eye.
This is going to be an awesome build! As they usually are!
it feels like the project is "done" as soon as the chalk(flour?) line is down and we get the aerial view :x
That is gonna be one huge house!
Love the drone shots
Your intern has my *exact* kind of curly hair. That's a sure sign of professional success.
Pretty cool guys! fun to watch, informative and great optics. A dream house to own- not to build??
Flour marking idea is a killer!😂
I'm surely going to like this house🏠 house build👍
I am glad to see you guys working on another project.
In Kashmir, we use POP
instead of flour to mark because it is inexpensive and doesn't wash away when it rains
What is pop? I’m assuming it’s not soda pop
@@remodz6385 man it's plaster of Paris
A bag of 20kg costs less than $2 here in kashmir
@@remodz6385plaster of Paris called in USA?
Plaster of Paris is de-hydrated gypsum
A bag of lime and a plastic water bottle lasts for days. A string line with decent sized plumb bob also gives you straight lines not matter the site conditions.
Need to hear more of that 5 string picking!
I have that rebar cutter and it’s amazing. I’ve used it to cut large bolts, rebar, etc.
The Captain Morgan reference was perfect. ; ) All the best you guys!
I just love you guys and love watching your videos it always give me a great feeling
This should be a fun one.
You definitely know saying sir is a sign of respect. Respect his respect
These guys are so interesting and entertaining I could watch them all day! I actually have. Also Jamie's early 2000s Silverado looks to be in immaculate condition. It's my favorite generation, and I never see them anymore because they've all rusted to powder by now in upstate NY.
