    Hey Alan. Just received my Southern Edge Whiting lures today. Jason was brilliant and helpful. The hooks arrived in record time. I am going to have Jason make up some Stinger hooks for me for Flathead but he asked me for the hook and Jig head size and lure size. I am going to be able to give him the lure size but am going to have to nut out the jighead and hook sizes. BTW mate; is it possible to fish for Whiting from jetties as I cannot afford a Kayak at this time. Thanks for all your help mate.

    Hi Allan. They say no run no fun for KG whiting. How do you get these down to the bottom without sinker and running tide? Fish closer to slack tide? Will certainly give it a go.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 місяці тому

      Yeah, that's exactly right, This technique can be very difficult in very tidal waters. I plan my day to fish an hour on each side of the slack tide in tidal waters, Thankfully where I fish in PPB there is bugger all tidal flow so you don't have to worry about that too much.

    It’s so frustrating, it’s winter, I spent a whole afternoon launching from Altona boat ramp down to Point Cook, also stopped half way there in 2.5m of water in sandy/weedy. Had mussels and chicken and had no touch on despite a burley bucket. Still has some fun with 20 undersize pinkies, 10-15 undersize flatties and just 3 keepers. But no glimpse of KGW.

    Thanks a lot for this video! Ive tried fishing around with top waters in shallow waters but had no luck. Would this setup work land based at beaches? Your very welcome, yeah i have found this strategy very successful even in areas that looks good for top water fishing in the shallows, just drop the jig head weight to as low as you can go that gives you ok casting distance and I'm sure you'll catch plenty. Cheers

    Hi Al, finally got around to picking up my rigs from Jason at Southern Edge Lures. Amazing he lives just around the corner from me. This video has been such an inspiration and demonstration to try things outside of the norm and step away from what we are traditionally comfortable with. Can't wait to give it a go and highly recommend people get in touch with Jason with the understanding he is a one-man operation so give him a some time with orders as everything is hand made. Hi Alan
    Stinger hooks! Great idea but I had a problem buying the swimlockz. Only available in monster sizes and no good for small jigheads.
    My fix was to feed one end of a leader through the small eye on the jig head and then feed it back through the same hole. This gave you a loop on one side and two free ends on the other. I used fluro but your choice.
    Take the loop and form a simple Palomar knot over the jig head. Result is a solid knot which won't move. Take one of the free ends and tie a stinger to it and to the other end tie a loop knot or a swivel. You can have this end as long as you want.
    Most informative vids you have here Alan.
    Cheers
    Alan H

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  Рік тому

      Hi Al, yeah i also found the swimlockz jigheads to be way to big. That's why i had the guys at Southern edge lures custom make them for me and im also making and expiramenting with some of my own now. You can certainly experiments with the length of the stinger and positioning of the hooks and knots. I always found most consistent for catch rates was 6 to 8 cm down from the top of the jig head which also didnt seem to impact the plastics swimming action to much.

    • @fishingmad

      Occasionally you will get snagged, but getting it down to the bottom in those areas are important to catch rates. If you get snagged you can often free it by moving over the area that its stuck.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  2 роки тому

      Its a great question. Its much more challenging in parts of West Port this technique because of the very strong currents. You either need to do this during slack tide 30 minutes each side of tide change or pick an area that's sheltered and shallow where your jig head has a chance of hitting the bottom. Get those things right and you can catch plenty with this techniques.

    I reckon them other blokes, like damn why you keep releasing them. 😂😂 Where not catching them. We want to eat them. You keep catching them just releasing As you don't want to eat them. It's not all about fishing, and bringing them home to eat it's all about the experience. Even catching them in just releasing them is the best bit about fishing, too.

    • @fishingmad

      @fishingmad I love releasing them but when I'm hungry I would take at home. Ecspecially when I love going out there in just throwing out a whole pile of food for the fish and just watching them just go for the food it's fascinating how I see the little ones to the bigger one's are eating.

      Thanks !! Yeah its been a work in progress to get the technique right and to dedicate some time to filming it, but it works great. Hi Alan, new to fishing. Can you setup the soft plastics in advance and how long to they stay good for. Just conscious that it would take me about 20 minutes on the kayak to setup with the jig etc.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  Рік тому +1

      Yes you can setup everything in advance before you hit the water. The only exception is scented soft plastics like the berkley stuff as they dry up and go hard very quickly. Other brands like zmans are no problems

    First cast trying this technique and it came back as if something had eaten around the hooks with big human teeth. Damn leatherjackets. That said if I put a hook sticking out of a sinker I'd probably catch the cheeky things - they were chasing my sinker later after they'd eaten all the bait 🙃

      99% of the catches for whiting are done with the small assist hook pinned in the side of the mouth which is the easiest to remove and minimal damage to the fish. We do lots of catch and release and this is important to us.
