Cordless Drill Conversion - With Laptop Batteries??

  • In this episode I will convert my cordless drill battery from ni-cd to lithium ion cells salvaged from laptop batteries. It's very popular on UA-cam and I want to see what the fuss is all about. In reality it's very dangerous... so be careful if you try it.

    Very comprehensive. Your clear instructive expressions were understandable. I often wondered about the purpose of BMS boards in reconstructed battery packs. The technical information made clear the inherent problems with Li- ion cells. Thanks.

    I’m glad you actually know what you are doing, unlike some other DIYers on UA-cam. Also, you’re the first one that actually solders the cells quickly 😁. I use a DIY spotwelder, but I always see people mentioning that you shouldn’t sink much heat into the cells and then they proceed to solder on them for 5 seconds 🤦🏼‍♂️.

    There are also shops which offer battery cases and PCBs for cordless tools which run already on LI-Ion batteries, for example the Makita LXT sytem. Combined with salvaged high current cells from tool batteries with broken PCBs (can also be packs from other brands) you can get extremely powerful packs, which are on the same high power level as the original battery packs. It is important to use high current cells in this case, because only them can deliver the currents tools like angle grinders or cordless chain saws need.

    Nice tutorial. But often, it is those cheap BMS and controllers that goes out first. It is usually why laptop batteries are dead in the first place. Instead of soldering all the components in the battery, just extend the balancing cable out. You can make a small magnet door on the battery to hide it if you want to look neat. Then modify the charger to connect to balance charger like Tenergy or Imax B6. And just connect the balancing cable.

    Nice summary of others videos,
    1-But are you sure the BMS make the full charging process : Constant current until 4.2V/S, then Constant voltage untill current goes to 1/10th the charging current then stop charge ? Because for what i've seen these BMS are mainly made to avoid under and over voltage and disconnect the battery from charger or charge when it happens (needing to remove the charge or the battery to reset)
    2-how and where do you set the charging current ?
    3-what is the usage of the 2A step down converter you put in links

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  5 років тому +2

      hi. in the BMS specifications it says CC/CV. when the battery pack is getting almost fully charged, the charging current decreases from 0.60A to 0.25A. so theoretically it should have some kind of CC/CV charging. to be sure, you need to connect a volt/ammeter to a single cell, and monitor the entire charging process. the charging current is set by the BMS. if you want to limit the current, you can use a step up/down converter with current limiting potentiometer, added to a 12V or 24V charger. if you don't have a 12V charger, you can use the standard power drill 24V charger + step down converter from the link.

    1:30 I experience the same issue with my DIY dremel, when I connected it to my ATX Lab Power Supply (thx, I used your "Gorgeous" ATX Lab Power Supply project). Additionaly, I added a XL6019 LM2596S (Amazing StepUp & StepDown Module) to get some variable feature other than 3.3v/5v/12v. Sometime I need less than 3v, to test 3mm Led for example.
    My DIY dremel is build with an old 555 motor, it was for a drill I guess.
    So alternative is to connect it to 5v, then step up voltage till reaching the speed desire!
    Thx for the explanation, why ATX is shutting down... I did not use the trick with dummy load as you cause I do not have access to a variety of those ceramic resistor. But after learning, how useful they are, I started to collect some of them...
    But wait , at the end you are charging the battery pack with an ordinary 12v charger! this white charger you are using is not for litium cells. What about when the battery are fully charged?? This charger will not cut off?? Is it not dangerous for the cells to be constantly chaged??
    Because I learned that BMS is not actually a proper charging board, it is a protection DISCHARGING board!! yeah some BMS got over charge protection, but still they are not proper charging board for litium cells...

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  3 роки тому +1

      hi. it depends on the BMS board. if you have a CC/CV charger or converter + a good BMS board with balancing feature and decent voltage values for the overcharge protection and the other features, it should charge the li-ion cells good enough and not damage the cells. the charging modules for one cell (4.2V) are better, because they are more precise and it's easier to apply all the protection features to only one cell. it's difficult to do the same think with several cells in series.

    • @DrZipZwan
      @DrZipZwan 3 роки тому

      @@Sorin_DIY yes you are right, though, I think it is easier to use 12v charger for Lithium battery, like you used with your first Router UPS.
      ua-cam.com/video/IlEnEn7ptmc/v-deo.htmlm54s
      You right it is much easier charging a single 18650, but when you switch to 2 or 3 especially in series, thats when things start to be tricky and complicated.

I could use a voltage stabilizer if needed. Can you pleas explain this part as nobody on the whole internet (a little exaggerated maybe) is able to explain that

    • @Sorin_DIY
