- This is Dr. Neufeld's keynote from the Tenth Annual Vancouver Neufeld Conference, held in April 2018.
Our need for insight as parents and teachers has never been greater. Ironically, the information age has flooded us with information and simultaneously blinded us to its meaning. Knowledge without insight can be dangerous.
For over a century now, social scientists have applied themselves to making sense of adults with the assumption that the dynamics would be the same for children. Paradoxically, it turns out that the key to making sense of ourselves lies in making sense of our children. Even more importantly, making sense of kids enables us to become the parents and teachers our children need. The better we see, the less reactive and more effective we are. Insight tends to bring out the best in us.

Beautiful! Especially the differences between 'insight', 'instinct', 'instruction', and 'intuition'.
As well as the difference between urgency and importance.
There are talks that are overlapping and there are talks like this one. This likeable gentleman says things which one doesn’t hear many others elucidate so clearly.

Are there any special situations to look for when the father is the one telling the "I'd like to understand better what makes you tick" (and follows up with action and practice), and the mother is the one who shows no interest? Common sense would seem to say that it is enough if it as least coming from one parent, but I'm not so sure. Culture seems to suggest that this script needs to come from the mother.
As long as they have one relationship that they can depend on for unconditional well regard and for being emotionally available it can make a world of a difference.
I didn't quite answer your question, but those are my 2 cents.

Did he actually have any practical advice though? If kids need to see their parents more then we probably have to overthrow capitalism? There's no way it'll be livable to half our productivity to look after our own kids now that the norm has been set.
I agree that diminishing the power of capitalism is needed but instead of a political revolution, i think it is about minimising our desires and living more simply. I work and my wife looks after our two children, and to afford her to do that we live in a small house, and live frugally. For example we don't drink alcohol, don't eat meat, don't have a TV because those things are all expensive.
But you do not get kids to leave them to others to take care off. You cannstill have capitalism. It is you that choose if you want money and stuff or if you want time with your children. You know you dont have to follow the norm. Thats how weak men live. Strong men take care of their family spiritualy, economically, physical, psychological and so on its you that choose dont blame it on shit.
@@nursifulable I think a big part of it is where you live, like sure you have a choice in what you spend money on to a degree. But in a lot of places you literally can't afford to feed your kids or send them to school unless you have two parents working full time. Aren't strong men supposed to improve the world for others?
There are plenty of ways to live self-sustainably and break the system. Just enlighten yourself and focus on the individual.
