- In a previous video ( • How To Peel & Cut A Wa... ), I demonstrated how to peel and slice a watermelon. In this video, we'll take the left over watermelon rind and pickle them using three different flavor approaches. Finally somebody else making veriations on this recipe. Every recipe calls for clove and cinnamon. I've been toying around with my own recipes and yours give me some great ideas. Thank you!
Man you did a great job coming up with new ideas for an old recipe. It does help to have a locally sourced old heritage watermelon from a farmer, instead of the commercial store bought melons. The rinds on them are too thin. You can cut a thick rind melon in half or thirds. Then turn flat cut side down. Use sharp knife to pare off the rind cutting downward toward board. Then cut rind off. When all rind is removed place a bowl over the melon. Invert the board melon and bowl. That gives a bowl with a single piece of melon shaped in a dome. Clean cut rind. And green shavings for compost or livestock. Thin rind melons just don't have quality rind. You can then make pickles any shape you desire from the rinds. This is a super old southern thing to use every rind of the summer. A guy named Donald Porta has a channel with some very authentic rind recipes. Back in the day when melon season came around, we made pickles, preserves, jam, syrups and candy. But the recipes are way older than me. Who knows if I will ever make videos about our recipes. I am too busy. I guess I should so they don't disappear. I can't live forever. Mr. Porta does a great job. As do these quick pickles. And I saw a lady do a pickled ferment but can't recall her channel name. Sorry.
I am going to try this today. My husband grew watermelons this summer and the heat has destroyed some of them and your recipe gave me an idea to use the rind so he doesn't lose to much profit from the sun damage watermelons, thank you and I will let you know how well it sells.
EPIC!!! I was watching the first example thinking "why wouldn't you use watermelon juice instead of water? And honey would probably be better than sugar..." Skip to example #two....BAM!!! Thanks so much...GREAT video!!!
yes. i dont like sugar. but too late. next time honey and its juice for sure.
I made this today with balsamic vinegar and honey. I love it! A lot of recipes call for too much sugar. This is the best recipe!
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed melon all summer, now I will enjoy the rind as well.
TOTALLY doing this and using it as a replacement for kimchi in a Korean shortrib dish...
Pretty great video, I've never heard of pickled watermelon rind before, seems great!
In Texas I was told they boil the find to.make a healthy sweet natural treat! Anyone know any healthy organic tastey vinegar to try making this pickled watermelon rind recipe?
Nice twist!
My mom made the sweet watermelon preserves - and as much as I loved sugar, they were too sweet for me!
I was looking at the rind from my local farmers market 🍈and thinking of something more like Kim Chi - Viola! May add a thinly sliced red shisho leaf or two - the Perilla aldehyde adds flavor and acts as preservative.
And the one with watermelon juice looks intriguing - thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
that was awesome!!!
Awesome. Thanks, Jacob.
Jacob, would you recommend using soy sauce at all in the asian inspired pickle? Or is there something in soy sauce that doesn't work well with that?
I can't believe how much we wasted .....ingenious .....I never thought of this...
Can you water bath jars to preserve longer?
What are you serving this with at the restaurant? Or is this a demo?
Based on your given recipes is there enough acidic quality to hot water bath these in jars?
J
Good ideas
just wondering if someone could tell me if the pickles are crunchy when finished? thanks

Nice.
These pickles are really good with fried chicken.
Do I Need to boil the watermelon rinds first?
Why.
@@monikas4656 so it can be on the shelf for a while?
To safely remove the meat from the rind could just use a spoon?
Is that a Vaynerchuck reference?
You really don't need to cut toward yourself. Just say'in.
Some people just like to live dangerously ...
Indeed they do!
