- How To Play Loose and Relaxed Tennis - Roger Federer Style
In order to produce effortless power and high-quality strokes, on a consistent basis, we have to be able to remain relaxed and loose with our technique. Download our FREE tennis guides here - www.top-tennis-training.com/f...
When our muscles are tight and stiff, the range of motion is extremely limited and the power capacity of our strokes will diminish greatly.
You may be able to create power with a tense and tight body for a few shots, but you definitely won't be able to maintain that for the duration of a 2-3 hour match or a tournament.
On the flip side of that, we have a player like Roger Federer who looks so relaxed with his swings, even when it's 5 all in the fifth set of a grand slam final.
It's one of the reasons Roger looks so graceful when he plays, that relaxation is poetry in motion, yet produces deadly results.
It goes against the perception that many tennis players have that in order to produce power, we need to exert more force and that typically ends up with the player becoming more tense and stiff.
So how exactly can we stay relaxed and play loose, especially when going for more power?
There are a few tricks to help you with the process, but nothing is more important than our breathing habits.
Holding our breath is one of the quickest ways to immediately make our bodies stiffer and tighter. Think about a stressful situation, the first thing that changes is our breathing patterns. Typically, we either hold our breath or take shallow breaths.
When doing meditation or yoga, breathing correctly allows us to relax the muscles, and lowers our heart rate. This results in feeling at peace, the complete opposite of when we're stressed out.
How To Breathe In Tennis For Relaxation
Many tennis players grunt when they hit their tennis forehand, backhand or serve. This is a much better method than holding our breath completely (which happens with some players) but it's not the optimum way to breathe in tennis.
The grunt typically happens after the contact point, which means that when the player made contact, they were tight and stiff as they were holding their breath.
When you study Roger Federer, one of the things he does so well is control his exhale through the point of contact. His facial muscles are relaxed, his cheeks are not puffed up (a clear sign of holding your breath is puffy cheeks) and his body looks relaxed, even when going for massive power shots.
Federer starts his exhale prior to contact, which allows him to be relaxed as he hits the ball.
This is the optimal way to breathe in tennis.
By starting your exhale prior to contact, and exhaling through the strike zone, your muscles will stay loose and relaxed and work in their longest range of motion.

Good advice. Only wish I had known about it when I started playing tennis 60 years ago.
Me too 🤣
Lol
Omg thanks for making me realize it’s 50 years for me. How did that happen??
This is very true, today I was playing tennis and the more relaxed I played the better I played and more power I could generate with ease.
👍
Super simple yet bang-on. Optimal breathing + maintaining eye contact on the ball are the cornerstones for building a solid tnns game. Everything else from technique to strategy and confidence are built on top of those.
💯
I watched this video yesterday and in my lesson today I noticed I was doing exactly as you instructed. I guess my subconscious decided to try it out 😆 It definitely helped me in my mini tennis warmup where I’m usually all over the place as it takes me quite a while to get warmed up and get going. Thanks.
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Really good tip. I used to confuse breathing and the grunt after you hit a ball, and was getting tired super fast. Until a friend mentioned it, and I get tired less faster now. Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching 👍
Ooh always wondered what I should be doing here - thank you so much!!
Good luck with the improvements 👍
This is a great tip. Never heard about breathing during strokes.Makes sense. I’m going to try it tomorrow.
Let us know how it goes
Brilliant! Never realized I was holding my breath on my swings even when I’m serving. I’m hoping this will help me maintain my energy during a match. And sweating less will be an added bonus.
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Very helpful, I will try on court.
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Excelent video!!!
ive been looking for video like this for weeks now, thank you so much! u guys r definitely the best tennis channel on UA-cam!
Thanks for the support 🙏
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial thank you for the tips!
Great. Very clearly demonstrated. Thank you.
Thanks for watching 👍
So important, thank you Simon 👍🏻❤️🎾
Thanks for watching 👍
Beautifully done extremely helpful and totally doable. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching 👍
First video I've ever seen on how to time the exhale. I think it's going to help with my swimming technique as well. Thanks, Simon!
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Thanks Simon-great tip!
Thanks for watching 👍
great point Simon. Thank you
Thanks for watching 👍
Really helpful, Simon. Thanks
My pleasure!
Breathe in, breathe out ... sublimely simple yet elusive!
Indeed, so often overlooked but breathing will give you rhythm and relaxation!
Awesome!!! thank you.
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks a lot, I’ll be paying more attention to my breath now
Good luck with the improvements
Totally agree with you...i had incorporated this & found that my consistency improved a lot...i however struggle to play at a high level every single day, there are few days where I find it difficult to concentrate or time the ball..I cant pinpoint the reason maybe you can do a video about this in future...cheers mate!!
I’ll keep that in mind for a future lesson 👍
Terrific insight ! on breathing right to stay relaxed . If the exhalation doesn’t take place through the contact and follow through there will be tightness in the chest for sure .. Thank you ! As always ! You and Alex are amazing !
Many thanks for the support Peter 🙏
Very helpful video
Many thanks 🙏
Tried this last night and it worked really well-had far more energy in the match-thanks
That’s great to hear 👍
Giant knowledge bomb! Amazing
Many thanks for the support 🙏
Gracias 🇪🇦🇪🇸
Wow superbly useful
Thanks for watching 👍
Your video is cutting our breath out 😜 Thanx for restore 👏🏼 👌🏼
Thanks for watching 👍
Nice racket! Love the all-white look.
Many thanks
I have a budding, talented player who, just a couple of lessons in, is ready for this instruction.
Tonight we addressed precisely this subject regarding how breath affects potentialities. I just sent the family your video. This is spot on. Thanks for the corroboration. 😉
Glad to hear it, good luck with the student
It's really a good advice it works a lot ,it's a key to win more and more matches a smooth process of breathing
👍
Thank you. I started playing women’s over 40 league and found myself hyper ventilating during matches. And I tense up. This will really help me. I know I have good hits, but need to have that relaxation breathing.
Nice one, will give it a go tomorrow
Let us know how you get on
After consciously giving it a go I realise my breathing is naturally fine.
One thing I am finding lately is knee pain and wondered if you guys have any techniques to improve that so I can continue match play as I get older? Nearly 41 now
Excellent tip. I will try, and i will tell you what it is happen. Tks.
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Guilty bout breathing after the whole stroke i should incorporate this on my technique to be more efficient Thank You Simon & Alex more power on your Channel..
Many thanks for the support
Excellent tip, Simon! What does the breathing look like on a serve to stay loose and relaxed, espcially when one is doing their 2nd serve?
It takes some experimenting on serve, but normally the exhale starts as you get out of the power position
Just watch when pros grunt, that is when the exhale is
Guilty as charged... Breath holder here! Great video
I think we’re all guilty at times, except Roger 🤣
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial thing is that there is so much to try and remember, breathing never seems to make the list.. at least consistently. Maybe for a rally or two but after that it's back to forgetting
It works
👍
Hey Simon great content as always. You are in my home town Alanya would love to meet and hit couple of balls when you feel like it. Kind regards, Hazar from Turgay Soysal’s Tennis Academy
I was there on Tuesday getting my rackets strung. I’m not in Turkey now, hopefully will be back later this summer
Nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is induces calm relaxation.
Interesting
I've been trying to improve my breathing for ages but I get sidetracked by concentrating on swing technique or footwork and forget to breathe.
I've got a match tomorrow and will do my best to apply your advice.
Good luck with the match 👍
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I won my match - 4/6 6/1 7/6 (11/9).
When I got my breathing right I often found I had the upper hand. Although, there were a few long intense rallies after which I realised I was holding my breath throughout. At 10/9 I was convinced that the player who's the most relaxed was going to win. I concentrated on my breathing which helped me remain lucid and finished the point (a lengthy rally) by forcing the error. I had this lesson in my head at the start of that point. 🙏
Great tip, thank you Simon! Do you recommend to focus in the breathing when I am playing in a match?
Only if you have worked on it extensively in training and can switch it on quickly. Trying to learn this in matches won’t work
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Got it! Thnks again
Nice tip! What racket is the all-white one you're using in the video?
Thank you 🙏
It’s a prototype racket 👍
In cases of both Federer and Barty the exhalation can be clearly noticed
Haven’t studied Barty but Roger is always on time

Train a lot - 3-4 hrs a day will do the magic with time 🎾🙏
Plenty of players have done that, and never reached a high level. Practice makes permanent, not perfect
good tips! what racket is that by the way?
The all white one?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial yes
Dude that Roddick face is priceless
🤣
coach are an atp pro? or do you coach atp pro? you are good!
Many thanks 🙏
Does this explain the noise some players make and which can be pretty loud and annoying, like Monica Seles did?
Yes, grunting is one way to ensure the exhale
Probably why players grunt consciously or unconsciously when hitting as they are expelling breath.
Better than holding your breath, but most grunts happen after contact meaning at contact, the player was tense
Hi Simon, i see you are in Alanya in Damlataş tenis club. I am also live in Alanya. If you want match practice, i will be glad match with you.
Hopefully I’ll be back in Turkey later this summer
Does grunting during a shot does the job too??
It helps, but it’s better to exhale prior to contact and during it, most grunts come after the ball has made contact
Interesting stuff. One would think it should be just automatic. Also can this really be done in the heat of a match? Does it really become second nature if you keep practicing it? Does it make sense to focus only on the exhale part as it’s probably easier than focusing both on inhaling and exhaling?
Definitely doesn’t happen automatically for most players. It takes lots of focus during training until it becomes a habit in matches
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks Simon. I trust your experience. If you say it’s possible with training I’ll definitely work on it. 👍
What racquet is that all-white one?
A prototype 👍
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Ok, cheers. Was thinking it might've been some custom Wilson one (they have that website/service). Looks cool.
I allways wondered why I seem to play better when i grunt
The power of the breath
Getting slimmer
Doing my best 👍
in order to play relaxed, you need to relax and, of course, play.
What a revelation
what a video
started watching a few of these gems and they are good. I'm curious why this guy seemingly plays with a different racket each time. Odd that, as he is good enough to play with anything but it will disrupt anyone's feel and precision overall...and it's not a good thing. Perhaps they are paying him to play with different rackets but I don't think so... as he has no real branding or mention of it. Odd that he does this overall.....:)
your chicks will pop up FAHAAAAA~~~~ ... yes .. this is crutial for the relxation ...... something not many people doing ....Good job Bro~~~
Thanks 🙏
This is why some females are noisy (shrieking Sharapova) when striking the ball. Nadal and Djokovic seem to be more noisy in recent years.
Then why do you think Halep ditched it completely?😀
Grunting isn’t optimal, Federer’s style is ideal
