These aren't rules that you'll find in a tennis rulebook, but they should be rules that you play tennis by. These seven errors are very costly for winning tennis matches, and you need to avoid these errors.
In this tennis lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will share with you the seven deadly sins in tennis, and how to avoid them.
Deadly Tennis Sin Seven:
This tennis sin is hitting approach shots crosscourt, unless you have a clear opening or are attacking a weakness. There is a time and a place for hitting your approach shot crosscourt, for example, if you want to hit into a weaker backhand of an opponent. However, in general, you want to hit 80% of your approach shots down the line, so that you can cover the down the line pass and be in a good position at the net.
Deadly Tennis Sin Six:
This tennis sin is recovering to the middle of the tennis court after every shot, instead of moving into the correct position. The only time you should recover right into the middle of the tennis court is when you've hit your shot directly into the middle of the opponent's court. At all other times, you should be recovering off centre on one half of the court, so that you're in the middle of your opponent's two best possible shots.
Deadly Tennis Sin Five:
This tennis sin is going down the line when you have no real reason to do so. Hitting down the line in tennis is something you should earn by creating space or getting a shorter ball.
When rallying, avoid going down the line unless you have the upper hand, as down the line is a higher risk shot.
Deadly Tennis Sin Four:
This tennis sin is trying to use different grips to volley with. Time is a very valuable commodity at the net, and trying to change grips between each volley will cost you time and cause you to hit many errors. We should all be using one grip at the net, the continental tennis grip. This allows you to hit every type of volley with the same grip.
Deadly Tennis Sin Three:
This tennis sin is hitting the net. When playing tennis, try to take the net out of play by lifting the ball a few feet at least over the net. Rafa Nadal often plays with 2-3 metres of net clearance, so he knows there's no chance he'll hit the ball into the net.
Deadly Tennis Sin Two:
This tennis sin is holding your breath.
Deadly Tennis Sin One:
This tennis sin is not tracking the ball.

Many thanks 🙏
Great video,Simon!
Many thanks Hans 🙏
Great video! I have started changing the approach shot as you indicated, and yes, I can see the improvement when going to the net: quicker approach and more effective volley. This video has become my reference every practice match I play. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and good luck with the improvements
Brilliant! Thanks
Thanks for watching 👍
Great coach. You have improved my game. Just the fundamentals clearing the net, breathing and tracking the ball. Also the strategy of going cross court with volleys and down the line when approaching is amazing.
I’m happy to hear that 👍
Great content Simon. Probably the best coaching video I’ve seen for the majority of players. GL in the 35s
Many thanks for the support Matt 🙏
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching 👍
this is the best teaching ever
Many thanks for the support 🙏
Danke!
Thanks for your support D! What type of content do you like to see from us?
Holding my breath is the biggest problem of my game. Well, that and lifting my head up too quickly instead of keeping my eyes on the ball.
Good luck with the improvements 👍
Wait. Are you me?
Brilliant! Super helpful. Not enough lessons on proper breathing out there. Thanks Simon
Thanks for watching 👍
Yes Simon these are solid tips bro. Especially the back to the middle one I feel. Sometimes u just have to read the ball and predict where they going once u are good at it so I agree with u there
Thanks for watching 👍
Awesome video as usual by TTT...Please make a video about sliding & footwork on clay..cheers mate
👍
Excellent content!
Many thanks 🙏
great Federer footage, good work, convincing! 🤩
🙏
Best tennis coach as always ! Are u gonna play test the new prestige line ?
Best regards
Many thanks for the support 🙏
We’ll see if we can get our hands on them to play test
Many great points made Simon thanks! Also, by far my favorite part is 13:40
Many thanks 🙏
I grinned at that too. Still, I want to point out that the racquet's position and angle at contact don't fully determine the shot yet. The racquet's momentum is also essential to spin and speed. You can't generate a fast topspin forehand or a firm smash off a soft incoming ball just by getting the racquet in the right place. It doesn't add any kinetic energy to the ball. If you want to do more than just use and redirect some of the incoming power, the racquet needs to be moving in the right way too. That's much of the reason we have all that takeback, after all.
All super recommendations. Number 5, knowing then to go down the line or go cross court is essential.
The breathing tip is huge and an uncommon tip you’ll hear as a beginner since it’s a micro technicality. Every lesson for every coach should begin with, exhale as you swing 🤣😂😅
Also all continental grip for volleys!!!!
All 7 are awesome tips. I could (probably should) watch this video 10 times. Thank you so much Coach Simon!
Many thanks 🙏
Great video. I knew all this stuff but I'm still guilty of not consistently using a Continental grip consistently at the net.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Simon, as always great stuff to improve our tennis. Please unveil where I could find this so scenic tennis-court where you train with the ballmaschine - looks like paradise!!!
That special court is in Alanya, Turkey 🇹🇷
Did you travel with your ball machine or you got to rent it there?
If the drop or shallow shot is down the middle, where do you suggest going with the approach shot? Great video by the way.
I’d look to approach into the weaker wing in that case, if the opponent has a solid backhand and forehand, I’d approach into the middle to reduce their angles
Hi simon i realize things are stylistic, but would you say most pros hit with a closed racket face at contact/strings slightly pointed down at the moment of impact for the atp forehand?
When going for more topspin, the strings will be angled slightly for sure, although it's very minimal.
When hitting flatter, the strings will be more square on to the net
Surprised about the lack of double faults on service in the list. Still great points to work with!
You can add your own too!
which grip do u use sir??
I have one problem with watching the ball at all times. Don't I also benefit from reading my opponent's shot preparation? I can obviously anticipate a lot of shots from the rally situation, but shouldn't I also take the other player's setup into account? How can I see that while watching only the ball? Or is it OK to watch the opponent briefly before contact and then quickly get back to watching the ball? That's what my coach suggested.
If you’re tracking the ball properly, you’ll see the opponent set up with your peripheral vision. That will give you clues, but ultimately they may set up and deceive you, so it’s better to wait until the strike and actually see where they hit than guess and go the wrong way
Serve&volley is a cross-court approach shot, hence it is a deadly sin
If you serve down the T, it becomes more of a centre approach shot
Hope it helps me on my first ITF match tomorrow.
How did your match go?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Well, I won, after behind 1x6 on first set. Then 7x6, 14x12.
#1 tracking the ball 💯. I work with lots of kids who are new to tennis. I like to see them throwing and catching bouncing balls before we even pick up rackets. The ones who show good instincts for finding the ball and catching it with both hands are the ones who advance quickest - not the ones with the strongest swings. Advice to parents of very young players: play catch with your kids!
100% Patrick.
Can’t hit a ball if you can’t catch it first
Thanks coach! Another mistake would be simply hitting the ball out. Maybe that's too obvious to be included in the list of tennis deadly sins.
It could be, I always feel it's a better mistake if you miss long or wide when comparing that to the net. But at the end of the day, a mistake is a mistake, so hitting long or wide has the same impact as hitting the net.
We should hate errors, I know I do haha
There are three deadly sins in Tennis imho (in my humble opinion) and not tracking the ball is one of them You are right there coach. Still a great video. Thanks!
What would you say the other two are?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial In my world of tennis the other two would be stamina and positioning. Cheers and once again thank You for a very good video.
Simon, what about the other players who grunt. Rafa, Djk, and many other players grunt as they pace up their strokes.
Works ok for them, but I still prefer Roger’s style much more
I have watched many of your videos and learned. I am self taught, and you have been very helpful. Thank you for the effort you put!!
Omg are you in Turkey🤩??
Johnny should be number one ;)
Johnny?
Hey Simon- I just purchased your $97 serve course and the videos are not playing. Pls check.
Might be text titles on screen for each sin

You have to mix up your game, so you shouldn't always hit down the line, then you are being read very easily..
You can mix up the down the line approach with variety, so will still be hard to read
Unless your opponent is a lefty
For which one?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial first
I'm not too clear what is cross court, which is down the line. And your yellow cone seens green
Cross court is to the opposite side of the center line from where you are, down the line is to the same side. And who cares? You knew what he meant and color is kinda subjective anyway.
Mark - it took me roughly 15 hours to make this lesson. If it wasn’t as clear as you would like it, sorry about that but for 99% of the viewers, they understood it clearly
It’s ok some beginners might not get it
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I'm really appreciate your time. Your video is one of the best. The breathing part really working for me . I'm just want to give you feed back. Might be my point is someone don't know what obviously for you or most your viewers, like approach shot, ground stroke. For you or most viewer know you mean ground stroke is baseline, but I thought ground stroke is the bouncing back ball, not only at baseline.

YAHweh's born again saints cannot sin because they are born of YAHweh -1 John 3:9
1 Peter 4:1 tells us all of YAHweh's born again saints have ceased from sinning.
the children of satan and his ministers continue to sin and try to convince you that you cannot stop sinning -1 John 3:8
salvation truth for you
Tennis sins are slightly different to biblical sins
#7, 80% shots should be down the line, #6,#5, down the line shots are most risky shots
80% of your APPROACH shots. Not 80% of your shots.
80 percent of approach shots, not 80 percent of groundstrokes
Mark - you’ve lost track of what I was teaching
