One piece has some of the most amazing voice work I've ever heard in media. The Japanese voice cast are some of the best in the business, and the characters are so expressive, the story so epic and emotional (in so many directions), that it allows for some of the greatest voice performances you could find. There are scenes from this story that, even being over two decades old and knowing FULL well what is going to happen, they make me tear up every damn time. And that's due to the direction and composition of the shots, the top tier OST, and the incredible performances of the voice actors.
@sssilky3317 spoiler . . . . . . . . . My favorite arc for everything is skypiea, and ive been up to daye for 8 years. Wiper shouting to luffy to light the fire of shandora gets me EVERY time!
One thing that one piece does amazungly well is that the world feels lived in. There are pirates who have tried to sail in the grand line and it changed them, theres people who lost their crews, stuff like that
You two are very underrated, this content is very fun to watch. You deserve more subscribers. Watching you both having fun making these videos is great. Keep up the fun videos
ONE PACE, one pace is a short version of one piece more accurate to the manga that can almost half the amount of time it takes to watch (it is an unfinished fan project so it does not have all the arcs yet but they are working on adding all of one piece to make it easier for new fans to get into one piece)
Your dad has good takes. The original Japanese is incredible specifically because of how good the voice acting is. Edit: I agree that the fan made version that is trimmed down is much better, thats the one I had my wife watch so we wouldn't spend forever catching up.
One piece is a must watch even for non-anime watchers the storyline is so well written and complex with twists and turns anyone would enjoy it once you get past the “wacky looking animation” which a lot of people enjoy due to its different art style
Around the 8 minute mark, you discuss how there's a mix of both japanese and english text on things. And yes, I can confirm that in Japan, there's something called "decorative English" which is pretty much what it sounds like. Just like you said, similar to how there's english people who will get tattoos of chinese or japanese words, the same is true in Japan (though not quite for tattoos) where it's popular marketting practise to use english words and letters because the english language is seen as "trendy". You will find Japan has plenty of shirts, companies, ads, and even the lyrics in their songs will sometimes incorporate English words because it simply sounds cool to them. I mean think about the name of the show itself. "One Piece" doesn't actually have a secret Japanese name or anything it's translated from. The characters of the show will quite literally refer to the mysterious treasure as "One Piece" in english even though they're speaking japanese.
I feel that the one piece community as a hole tends to be really good with new people coming into One Piece. Personly I think it is because we all love it so much that we want others to experience it for themselves. On top of that many of the fans at one point said it is too long for me to get into or I don't have the time. At least that is the case until you start it then you get hooked.
It's absolute WONDROUS to watch The Greatest Story Ever Told. I would pay for that. His enthusiasm on the seas at the start were great. That bicycle scene is crazy when it pops out even for who is watching. 100% on the original voice and subtitles. Good video.
buildings with both Japanese and English are fairly common in japan. Japan has 2 lettering systems and both are difficult for foreigners to read or type, english is international business language so those that can't read the Japanese can usually read the English. Another major factor is that the british occupied japan after world war 2 with the job of modernizing it.
Please have him react to the openings, or upload his reactions to the series! I'm so excited for him, his smile says it all. He will definetly enjoy the series.
Regarding Japanese English wording, the Marines use "MARINE" as their designation in both manga and anime. The term is written in English. Richard observed the Japanese word "JUSTICE" written on the building. Different high-ranking individuals within the Marines have varied versions of justice as their motto, displayed on their walls. However, the entire Marine force shares the common attribute of adhering to justice, whatever its interpretation may be. As one ascends in rank, personal notions of justice become more prevalent. Examples of personalized justice mottos in Japanese for these high-ranking individuals include: - Kakageru Seigi: 掲げる正義 (Upheld Justice) - Zettai-Teki Seigi: 絶対的正義 (Absolute Justice) - Aokiji: だらけきった正義 (Lazy Justice) - Kizaru: どっちつかずの正義 (Unclear Justice) - Sakazuki: 徹底的な正義 (Thorough Justice) In all these instances, the individuals display their Japanese version of justice prominently, typically on a wall. Conversely, words meant to be universally understood are in English, such as "DEAD OR ALIVE" on wanted posters, reflecting English's status as a global language (even in the manga).
The first time I saw this video my tears of emotion fell, and I realized that I have been following this anime for 2 decades along with the manga and the visual and story content it has is incredible. Oda to created a Masterpiece.
the reason one piece fans are so nice is due to the message brought by the anime, which is why so many people love it. its adventure, friendship and kindness, like naruto.
So one of the coolest things about One Piece to me are these things called Cover Stories. Basically, Oda will take a character (alot of times a villain) from a previous arc and use the cover of each chapter to illustrate a story of what they are doing now that they're no longer relevant at the moment. You combine that with the fact that Oda is a super long term planner in his story telling and will recontextualize events or bring back a character from literally hundreds of chapters ago it really makes the world feel alive like things dont just revolve around the Strawhats.
i really need to read the manga i always have to look these up but i kinda want to buy the volumes and not pirate it, lol, and its a lot of volumes and money ive only got the first 3 volumes and also my friend went to japan and he brought me back a japanese copy of volume 1 and a copy of wanted an alternative version of the first volume that oda made and scrapped.
I think the best introduction videos to one piece would be “the appeal of one piece, where to start” & “why you should watch/read one piece” by super eyepatch wolf

Hearing someone say they see why people can watch this just for the art made me so happy!! how much hate one piece gets for the art and the art is absolutely amazing
I love the idea of an outsiders perspective on the community alone - dune people: mean, one piece people: kind :) I think it would make Oda very happy to hear this.
Neither Noah nor I enjoyed Dune. We did a video on that. I'm telling you, there's good and bad in One Piece. Some fun stuff is over the top and yes, it takes some getting used to in places. It is maybe a lot of getting used to. But once you get used to it, you see that it also unites an infinite number of cultures, has allusions to all sorts of real life events and characters. (The good the bad the ugly, etc.) Endless depth of character forms, has a complex and extraordinary narrative structure and simply offers an overall cultural experience that no other medium has ever managed. Easter eggs and references at all ends and characters and stories that go right into your heart. The best world building maybe even in all of media. It is, discounting some of the over-the-top comedy and the sometimes tiring and length of the plot, the greatest story ever told. Rightly number 1 of all manga and ingrained so deeply in the hearts of the fans that it is inseparable. A must watch. The best story ever.
The story is gorgeous happy to see you’re enjoying it. It’s definitely a commitment to get into the world. reading the manga in my eyes is the easiest way to absorb the information but I think if you just see little pieces of world building and get a general idea for the themes that’s a perfect way to lightly touch the material
9:31 my mom did the same thing. Funnily enough, in the Viz official translation for the One Piece manga they changed Zoro's name to Zolo because of Zorro. Viz does a lot of other things that are like that unfortunately so I tend to read fan translations but will sometimes read both for comparison as it can be difficult to faithfully translate Oda's intentions when there's a bunch of similar ways to say the thing but they have minor differences that have very different implications.
A lot of names in the manga are English words, sometimes written in our letters but often written in Japanese script which causes problem because it can actually take years before we find out how a word is actually written (since it's not actually a Japanese word so Japanese people or dictionaries can't help) which can have massive implications even story-wise xD
You should react to a video explaining the geography of the One Piece World as it's one of the coolest things in the manga and also filled with mysteries!
The kindness of Luffy is absolutely contagious, even/especially for the audience. At 46 years old, I wouldn’t put One Piece on par with Dune as far as world building.
really wholesome video! How about you make your dad listen to some of one piece's best osts? Here's some I recommend: The World's Number One Oden Store, The Fight Continues, To The Grand Line, the very very strongest, Luffy VS Ratchet Round 1, wano, Oden's Adventure, Travels with Whitebeard and Roger, Kyoshiro joins the fight, Depart! Nine Red Scabbards. (bonus track: Donquixote doflamingo)
the easiest way to describe One Piece world is this, imagine every popular fantasy themes, now imagine them as their own island in the world that is mainly in 18th century earth mixed with Raypunk tech.
btw for the movie, they personally ask oda to draw them and since one piece world have more than 20 million island, these are all cannon island to the story.
I absolutely love the chemistry you two have. Such a great father son duo. My dad never really took interest in my love of anime and seeing how you two discuss my favorite series I’ve followed for 17 years really made my day. Side note: if your dad would rather watch but the anime pacing is an issue, I would recommend One Pace, the condensed version that cuts filler. It chops the watch time in half and makes the experience more fluid for new viewers. Thanks again for the video, you’ve got a new subscriber!
maybe one piece or two of advice: If Gen X Dad starts watching the anime, he needs to keep in mind that the first episode of one piece is from 1999. So the graphics might not be as pretty as it looked in this video. The anime has huge pacing issues later on in the series, but it will take a while before u hit that point,so no need to worry about that yet,
“I would rather listen to the voice inflection subtleties and intensities by someone delivering the lines in their native language even if I don’t understand it” FUCKING BASED DAD!
Props to Dad for embracing subs 👍 Live action Speed Racer is sure one hell of a movie! Live action Alita could be something that he may find interesting too
There is a fan project called "OnePace" out there where fans have cut and mixed episodes together to make the viewing experience a lot more... "tolerable", I guess is the best word for it. Especially for new viewers. Because as a massive fan myself, even I think they drag out some scenes waaaaay too much. According to them they've also done the cut, mixing and all of that, without loosing any valuable information. The audio is also supposed to be really well edited and sound natural. The viewing experience is apparently 45% faster according to them. Now, I don't work for them nor have I seen the edited versions of the episodes, so I can't speak for the quality and whatnot, but instead only for what I've heard and read myself. So for new viewers, that could be a good thing. At the same thing though... I'm also in the boat of "More One Piece, the better.", but that's only because I really love the show and can "tolerate" the slow pacing that accurs at times.
From what I've seen in most major Japanese cities, they do have a lot of Japanese text and some English. But your dad is right, the creator wanted this series to feel more international, so he often went out of his way to make sure the world he build didn't just feel like Japan, so including various languages and ethnicities was part of the design philosophy.
Well, the whole message of One Piece is adventure and positivity. It's no wonder the community would be so warm. We're all Strawhats, gotta honor Captain Luffy.
I love these videos. If you ever decide to watch the original show, I recommend One Pace. Since you need time, It fixes a lot of pacing issues and will be much faster to watch.
Things being written in more than one language is actually extremely common in a lot of places. Anywhere that tourists go people try to use a lot of English. I live in South America and a lot of restaurants here either have English translations for each menu item or a completely separate menu all in English. I haven't been to Japan, but it wouldn't shock me if there are similar things there. One of my pet peeves here is that I speak fluent Spanish, but people will often go out of their way to accommodate me with English, even when it's obvious that my Spanish is much better. It's like damn it took a long time to learn this language and I'm trying to show respect by using it. Just let me use it.
Really enjoyed the reaction now. There is One Pace which is a little bit condensed fan project (it takes out non-manga scenes and adjusts timing in the fights). Of course there is also the 1 second from the first 1000 episodes, but that is too condensed to get the story and is more a tease or a nostagla hit depending on which side of being on the journey you are. The key thing is that the One Piece story is a journey, don't worry about catching up, when you have it will feel far too soon. Community advise is not to read the anime titles as they sometimes contain spoilers, as they assume watchers will have read the manga chapters concerned.
I would really love to know his thoughts on The Hidden Island's "The Greatest Usopp Theory Ever Made" and the breakdown of all of the different literature references that Usopp's character draws on
15:25 100% Haha, the majority of the one piece community agrees with you on that. Also it would probably be faster to read it, because teh anime later on does slow down in pacing a bit, but its still worth the watch in my opinion.
I can't read the manga either, because it's hard to read it backwards. lol, but My Husband and I love watching the show!! You may truly love it. I agree with your coments about the voice acting too!

There are scenes from this story that, even being over two decades old and knowing FULL well what is going to happen, they make me tear up every damn time. And that's due to the direction and composition of the shots, the top tier OST, and the incredible performances of the voice actors.

My favorite arc for everything is skypiea, and ive been up to daye for 8 years. Wiper shouting to luffy to light the fire of shandora gets me EVERY time!
One thing that one piece does amazungly well is that the world feels lived in. There are pirates who have tried to sail in the grand line and it changed them, theres people who lost their crews, stuff like that
17:35
that exists. it's called One Pace.
It will be fun doing the anime watchalong with your dad. The random remarks it will be so fun.
15:17 that's W dad. that's all i need to know from this video. Like!!
Oda pulls from cultures around our world to build his world. You'll see inspiration from all kinds of things
The face when he saw kuzan riding the bicycle was one of a kind!!!
You two are very underrated, this content is very fun to watch. You deserve more subscribers. Watching you both having fun making these videos is great. Keep up the fun videos
Thank you! - Dad
"Decorative English." That's an interesting concept. - Dad
Another major factor is that the british occupied japan after world war 2 with the job of modernizing it.
it was an allied occupation by i think britian, new zealand, australia, and the US occupied it and modernized it.
Please have him react to the openings, or upload his reactions to the series! I'm so excited for him, his smile says it all.
He will definetly enjoy the series.
seconded id like to hear his perspective on the openings as well.
Examples of personalized justice mottos in Japanese for these high-ranking individuals include:
- Kakageru Seigi: 掲げる正義 (Upheld Justice)
- Zettai-Teki Seigi: 絶対的正義 (Absolute Justice)
- Aokiji: だらけきった正義 (Lazy Justice)
- Kizaru: どっちつかずの正義 (Unclear Justice)
- Sakazuki: 徹底的な正義 (Thorough Justice)
In all these instances, the individuals display their Japanese version of justice prominently, typically on a wall. Conversely, words meant to be universally understood are in English, such as "DEAD OR ALIVE" on wanted posters, reflecting English's status as a global language (even in the manga).
Really loved the reaction by the way, just wanted to let you guys know :D
Of course your point of how it feels unique for the audience is absolutely true too
We really appreciate the input. - Dad
OMG YES! all I ever wanted!
DESNES!!!!
The first time I saw this video my tears of emotion fell, and I realized that I have been following this anime for 2 decades along with the manga and the visual and story content it has is incredible. Oda to created a Masterpiece.
the reason one piece fans are so nice is due to the message brought by the anime, which is why so many people love it. its adventure, friendship and kindness, like naruto.
dont forget Freedom. very important.
Been waiting for this! As long as your dad is enjoying it keep giving us One Piece videos lol
'I like the artwork.' richard is king
If time is an issue, I highly recommend "One Pace".
Eeeyyy, more “dad discovers one piece” content! So, 3 hour reaction to all one piece openings next?👀
I think the best introduction videos to one piece would be “the appeal of one piece, where to start” & “why you should watch/read one piece” by super eyepatch wolf
The worldbuilding in one piece of so unique and creativity that it will blow mind. If you haven't seen it already. Watch it immediately. You will regret missing it.
Hearing someone say they see why people can watch this just for the art made me so happy!! how much hate one piece gets for the art and the art is absolutely amazing
I love the idea of an outsiders perspective on the community alone - dune people: mean, one piece people: kind :)
I think it would make Oda very happy to hear this.
Neither Noah nor I enjoyed Dune. We did a video on that. In fact, I think I commented that the adventure of my car breaking down on the way to his apartment was more entertaining than watching the movie angered a lot of Dune fans. Their comments were intense. The OP community has been wonderful. - Dad
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches i dont want to speak poorly of a movie and anger fans but i mean dune wasnt very good. i didnt like it. thanks appreciate the kind words. we are all Nakama.
I'm telling you, there's good and bad in One Piece.
Some fun stuff is over the top and yes, it takes some getting used to in places. It is
maybe a lot of getting used to.
But once you get used to it, you see that it also unites an infinite number of cultures, has allusions to all sorts of real life events and characters.
(The good the bad the ugly, etc.)
Endless depth of character forms, has a complex and extraordinary narrative structure and simply offers an overall cultural experience that no other medium has ever managed.
"The breathtaking world of One Piece" is probably my favorite youtube video EVER, thanks for the reaction!
Much thanks for indulging us with this request, much love!!
Our pleasure!
A lot of names in the manga are English words, sometimes written in our letters but often written in Japanese script which causes problem because it can actually take years before we find out how a word is actually written (since it's not actually a Japanese word so Japanese people or dictionaries can't help) which can have massive implications even story-wise xD
It is SIGNIFICANTLY faster to read One Piece, than it is to watch. So crunched for time, it is definitely the better option.
We were close to getting him! If he watches more videos like "Why you should watch/read One Piece" by Eyepatched Wolf, maybe then he'll join us. :)
You should react to a video explaining the geography of the One Piece World as it's one of the coolest things in the manga and also filled with mysteries!
seconded thats actually a great video and i dont think it has any spoilers.
The kindness of Luffy is absolutely contagious, even/especially for the audience. At 46 years old, I wouldn’t put One Piece on par with Dune as far as world building.
Would you say Dune's world building is better or worse?
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeachesmuch better
@@TheRockerX personally i dont think dune is even comparable to one piece, one piece's world building is much better
really wholesome video!
There is a shortened version of the One Piece anime called “One Pace” where they shorten the anime to the manga’s pacing
About his question regarding western pirates, there is a pirate named Blackbeard, so there are some inspirations from western pirates.
btw for the movie, they personally ask oda to draw them and since one piece world have more than 20 million island, these are all cannon island to the story.
Hawaii, especially the city of Oahu, have a lot of signs with both English and Japanese written on them.
Thanks again for the video, you’ve got a new subscriber!
maybe one piece or two of advice:
If Gen X Dad starts watching the anime, he needs to keep in mind that the first episode of one piece is from 1999. So the graphics might not be as pretty as it looked in this video. The anime has huge pacing issues later on in the series, but it will take a while before u hit that point,so no need to worry about that yet,
"Maybe one piece or two of advice..." Well played! - Dad
“I would rather listen to the voice inflection subtleties and intensities by someone delivering the lines in their native language even if I don’t understand it” FUCKING BASED DAD!
I will assume being a fucking based dad is a good thing. Now, it's off to the urban dictionary! - Dad
Props to Dad for embracing subs 👍
Live action Speed Racer is sure one hell of a movie! Live action Alita could be something that he may find interesting too
for sure the subs are the best imo. the english dub isnt bad either though.
You had me grinning at my screen like some kind of idiot. Absolutely love your reaction
now we need to see him react to at least the 1st episode of Netflix One Piece Live Action! 😂
PEOPLE'S DREAM, NEVER END. man, thats such a great quote to end vid.
The fact that each and every one of these places is not just shown but all go fully in depth to each island and location.
great video. this was awesome. highly recommend a good read.
Yes One Piece has both the Quality and Quanity 🔥🔥🔥😍
Speed Racer is a awesome classic anime and kudos to your dad for being a anime fan and not knowing it😂
17:30 there's something called one pace that edits the anime to the manga only material and it cuts half of the show if you'd like to watch it
Make ur Dad react to this 2 video.= ''The Appeal of One Piece: Where to Start'' and ''Why You Should Watch/ Read One Piece''
The One Piece - unleashed vídeo by STRAWHAT V is fantastic too you guys Will love
Wholesome AF. And don't worry Mr. Dad, we get it if you don't have the time, you are already an honorary member of the one piece community either way.
Much appreciated! I will make time. - Dad
I love how you were immediately laughing at 10:35 expecting his reaction 😂😂
I won't be able to make when it goes live, but looking forward to watching this once it is out.
“One piece the greatest story ever told” next please! 😁
I would really love to know his thoughts on The Hidden Island's "The Greatest Usopp Theory Ever Made" and the breakdown of all of the different literature references that Usopp's character draws on
you guys are so wholesome and so cute 🧡
Thanks!

Love your dad reacting
And this is a perfect thing to
React to
15:25 100% Haha, the majority of the one piece community agrees with you on that.
Him listening to all the one piece openings would be great.
Would probably need like three episodes though with there being 24 of them.
Round of Applause !!!! Only us Hardcore Fans Spot The 3 swords
I cant wait to see the reaction for onepiece live action
there is a guy named 'explained with bad doodles' , he made 3 or 4 super funny one piece vids. very entertaining and great opinions. maybe you can check out 1 or 2 of them, would love to see your reactions
they are usually 10-15 minutes long and are summaries of the story so richard could get a good impression of the important moments and characters without spending to much time ! :)
much love from germany
