  • 2024 Nissan Versa.
Buyers once had a wide selection of subcompact cars to choose from. But most entry-level sedans and hatchbacks have vanished from the market in recent years as automakers focus on building small crossover SUVs instead.
    2024 Mitsubishi Mirage.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage is all about value. One of just two vehicles on the market with a base price below $20,000, the Mirage offers high value, low cost of ownership, and impressive fuel economy.
    2024 Kia Forte.
Value is the 2024 Forte's forte. The compact Kia offers a great warranty and plenty of standard features for an attractive price. But its performance doesn't match its sporty good looks. Kia's playbook is simple:
    2024 Nissan Sentra.
The Sentra has been a staple of the Nissan lineup since the 1980s. Slotting between the subcompact Versa and the midsize Altima, the five-seat econobox has always been long on value.
    2024 Volkswagen Jetta.
The Jetta deserves praise for its overall comfort and spacious interior, but we're turned off by the frustrating capacitive-touch controls and prevalent hard interior plastics.
    2024 Hyundai Elantra.
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra continues to be a leader among compact sedans; it has a comfortable and roomy interior, a growing list of safety features, and a solid warranty. It also has a wide range of trims from hybrid to high-performance, so there’s a version to suit many types of drivers. The Hyundai Elantra was already a standout in the compact sedan segment for its features and value. And this year, the 2024 Elantra gets enhancements in infotainment, safety, and style that make it even more appealing. Hyundai discontinued its small Accent in 2022, leaving the Elantra as the entry-level gas-powered sedan in the Hyundai lineup, below the larger Sonata sedan. The Elantra has a surprisingly roomy interior for a compact sedan, with a wide range of trims that include everything from hybrids to the high-performance N for those who crave a more spirited driving experience. A starting price of $22,500 makes it appealing to drivers with modest budgets, and yet this year's interior enhancements, including soft-touch front door panels, make it look and feel like a more expensive car. Factor in Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, and the Elantra is a strong entry in a competitive segment.
    2024 Toyota Corolla.
The Corolla gets nearly 40 mpg on the highway with its standard gas engine, and up to 50 mpg in hybrid form. The roomy interior is trimmed in high-quality materials, the infotainment system is more sophisticated than you'd expect for the price, and it comes with useful driver-oriented features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. It's also the only compact hybrid sedan with all-wheel drive, a combination that gives it a little extra performance boost. It's even available as a hatchback (reviewed separately). A staple of Toyota's lineup for nearly 60 years, the Corolla remains one of the best-selling compacts in the U.S. thanks to a combination of reliability, utility, and value. Toyota continues to refine the formula with the 2024 Toyota Corolla. But the Corolla isn't especially inspiring to drive. It's not quick, not particularly dynamic, and it won't tickle your heart rate in a tight turn. For that, you want a competitor like the Honda Civic or Mazda 3. The Corolla also falls short in trunk space, trailing rivals such as the Civic or Hyundai Elantra, although the Corolla hatchback option makes this less of an issue. The Nissan Sentra and Subaru Impreza are also worth a look. Still, the Corolla remains competitive for good reason. Buyers today, like before, will find it offers a compelling mix of features and price to suit their needs. A staple of Toyota's lineup for nearly 60 years, the Corolla remains one of the best-selling compacts in the U.S. thanks to a combination of reliability, utility, and value.
