I think the vast majority of manufacturers place negative reviews about cars and trucks like this because they are affordable and all the manufacturers want to do anymore is rip people off. There is a huge market for small affordable vehicles that are good on gas but don't have a lot of power, but you can't sell that for $50,000 dollars or $100,000 dollars so they won't offer it to people. It's a great car, ignore the negative reviews, it's just the greedy corporate elite trying to stick it to you again.
@palebeachbum They haven’t gone up in price at all 12,000 in 2014 is about 16,000 today and they MSRP for about 17,500 and if you factor in all the new regulations the government has added in the last 10 years it makes sense for example all cars made after 2018 now require a backup camera despite the fact it makes you a more careless driver that gets into more accidents. If your going to blame someone blame the government.

My first car was a 2014 mirage (under 10k at the time), and last year I bought a new 2023 one! At first I was embarrassed about my car because it looks pretty small but I love them now! You will save a ton on gas, my average mpg has gone over 50 on highways! The older one definitely made me feel the road more than my new one. Also parking is so easy!
I daily drive a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, and it's the same yellow color. I never seen another yellow Mirage on the road. Nice to see it! I really like the car. It's gotten 4,600 miles on it so far. I also need to add, the door panels are plastic, which is good. Just be aware they scratch very easy. Also the plastic steering wheel is alright, but when I was going on a long 8 hour drive in the mountains, my hands got worn out a bit. So I put a cheap soft steering wheel cover on it. And it fixed the problem, even on the long 10-12 hour drives I've done in it.
@@micahwilliams1826 I rarely go over 55 MPH. But I have gone 70 MPH in it once, it seemed happy. About 2,300 RPM when the road was flat, and about 3,500 RPM up a 6% grade (that is the steepest grade you will ever find on an interstate highway). The MPG does go down at those higher speeds. At 55 MPH, you get about 60 MPG. At 70 MPH, you get about 45 MPG. So you lose about 1 MPG for every 1 MPH gain.
I just bought this car last night, love this color too. Hands down this is the best commuter car on the market. My husband and I both have long daily commutes (I'm day shift, he's night shift) and this car is EXACTLY what we were looking for. It gets great mileage, fantastic warranty and it doesn't have a bunch of unnecessary stuff that can malfunction. Too many car makers sacrifice durability for the sake of fancy flashy crap. We still have our weekend getaway SUV with all the creature comforts but for day to day driving this car rocks! Bravo Mitsubishi 👏
I own a 2015 Mirage with 102k miles. I've had it for six years. I love it. It's been very reliable. It gets-- still-- over 53 mpg on the highway. And it only costs $25 to fill. The only time it broke down was bc it needed a new battery and alternator in January 2024. I plan to get another one in a few years.
P.S. I drive on the highway regularly, and never have trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic. I've gotten it up to 90 mph with no apparent strain. It doesn't accelerate quickly from a stop. But once you get used to the CVT, it's fine.
I just ordered one from the local dealer, bought a "base" ES in Titanium Grey, here in Canada they don't sell the base one with the steel wheels anymore, but come standard with the 14" Alloy Wheels, got it for a tick over 20K taxes in out the door, this is my second Mirage, my only disappointed is to hear by 2025 this car will be discontinued and not being replaced!
4 reasons I would buy this car. 1. Ugly and slow. Less apt to be stolen. 2. Best gas mileage. 3. Warranty is better than most others. 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper. 6 year 100,000 mile power train warranty. 4. The total cost. For a daily driver around town it can't be beat.
I am thinking of leasing one with the option to buy. All I need is air conditioning and a 5 speed gearbox if they have one. More for local errands along surface roads..
This is my personal car and I love it. Mirage hatchback 2017 model. Purchased this car in the Philippines way back 2017 for at least Php 621,000.oo philippine pesos which roughly $ 11,000.oo at that point. Almost 7 yrs and did not have any problem whatsoever. Minor accidents and that's it😁 The real plus in this car is the gas mileage. So fuel efficient and being a small car have some perks to it. Many people hates it, but for me it's a good car. Good review sir
Im a mechanic and i wanted a cheap new fuel efficient 4 door car. I bought a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage. 5 speed, 1.2L 78hp 3 cylinder. It was voted the worst car in america by car and driver. I didnt understand why. It went 0-60 in about 8 seconds and i would drive it at 80mph with no fear, it also got 50mph. I put 50k on it in 2 years with zero issues. I paid $9800 out the door for it. The only issue i had with it was its traction control system, if it was raining with standing water on the road it would violently dip when the system cut power. So everytime i got in i just turned taction control off and powered through hydroplanes. Its simple, cheap, reliable, safe, easy to maintain. I would buy it again if i needed a commuter.
You briefly mentioned the warranty. These Mitsubishi Motors cars have one of the longest warranties in the business. While the Mirage might not be the most enjoyable driving experience, it certainly is good affordable transportation.
@@jayraider521614My dad is a car guy but he had an old, low mileage Festiva back in the early 2000s and it was a fun, economical little car to drive around. It was boxy, white, and had a utilitarian Suzkuki Samurai vibe that I liked. He ended up giving it to my uncle and he ran it into the ground. Wish he gave me the car to learn on instead.
I still watch Mirage reviews from time to time even though it's been 5yrs since having my Mirage. I kind of miss it. I probably won't buy another though because I just don't feel safe in it with the maniacs on the road where I live.
Same, it was honestly the best first car ever! However I starred to travel more for my job and it gets windy where I need to go. That was the only con, fighting the damn strong winds lol.
@@Snake-ms7sj I used to ride a motorcycle and I was injured in an accident. I still don't feel safe in a Mirage having been in an accident in mine and seeing the crash test footage.
I rented one for a few days and l really liked it. Before returning it, I filled the gas ⛽️ up, it was maybe 11 bucks and it just sipped gas. Anyone tight on cash or on a strict budget who doesn’t do a lot of freeway 🛣️ driving it’s perfect for city and suburb driving.
This seems perfect for my first car. Also as someone who is 4'11 and 3 quarters us tiny ppl appreciate a small car lol. I am in love with the color and the manuel key
Wait… I had to do a double-take only seconds in because I got my Mitsubishi Mirage from a dealership called “Southtowne” in Newnan, GA. It was a trade-in that was nearly new but they were a GM and Hyundai dealer back then (24 years ago!).
Very unfortunate that Mitsubishi decided to discontinue the Mirage for 2025. A car that many in America need.... and more will need in the near future. Now, the only choice is the Nissan Versa since even the American car-makers have already discontinued their budget offerings.
Great car. That is for 1 or 2 people only. Rented one with Enterprise last year and gas mileage was great. With just the driver and some groceries the acceleration to highway speed (60) was about 10 seconds. I would buy one as a cheap city commuter car.
Oh man, great review! I love economy class cars. It's sad the really cheap ones don't sell well. The sales numbers seem to point to everyone wants the step up. It's like when you go to a restaurant and you order a bottle of wine. You never get the cheapest bottle, you get the next step up. Meanwhile that cheap bottle was just as good. I drove this, a Versa, and a Rio back to back. I liked the Rio the most and ended up buying it. It easily had the most power. It sucks the kia boys thing is driving up insurance prices, at least the 2023 models are fixed, hopefully that fad dies down and I can save some money. But still, I really wanted something new to replace our second car, and something that is super cheap to repair. It was replacing a 20 year old car that I was fed up with the expensive parts. I've driven it on several 4+ hour road trips and was pleasantly surprised by it. I genuinely have no complaints about the car for the price. Heck I even got some money off which is wild considering how cheap it is. If I had to nitpick, the only thing that annoys me is I have to remove the headrest in the back seat to fit both the car seats. So whenever I remove those to drive someone else, I have to pull them out of the trunk and re-install them. My EV6 doesn't have this problem, I guess the headrests on the Rio are tilted forward or the back seat slopes weird? Who knows, it's just a nitpick.
so far ownership? Thinkingof getting one myself too with tech package. How's fuel economy? Any steering issues like the Mirage steering SUCKS! Even their new cars!
@@dbzownz12345 I have no complaints. I live deep in the city and we get 35+ mpg. Which is wild. My Nissan rogue would get 16 and my Buick encore would never get above 17. On the highway, the Rio is getting at least 44 depending on the trip. It’s really similar mileage to the ford fusion hybrid we had. No complaints about the steering. It seems average. I’ll say though, being pot hole season, the suspension can be a little rough. The car has only developed on squeak so far on the drivers door. I just unclipped it a little and then pressed it back on and that seems to have resolved it. I do wish I got the tech package for push button start. Mainly because you can buy a cheap car starter that’s easy to install yourself. Mine had a key so I have to get a more expensive and harder to install remote starter. I’ll probably just skip it.
@@boborambow I agree & I think w/o tech pakage you mis out on Kia Connect which can be used to track car like GPS. Free for 1yr, then pay annually. Worth it if you live in not best area or visit not good area sometimes. Great safety feature. I was close to getting a Hyundai Venue SEL cause sunroof for MSRP, but stopped myself cause I do food delivery & didnt think it practical to use like a Rio would have been smarter even though I'll lose sunroof, but mpg is so much nicer & will have KIA connect whereas Venue doesnt have "Bluelink" on SEL package onlu Limited which goes for 26k with shipping - taxes, fees, etc. Can get the rio OTD price around 23k max.
@@boborambow Also, to answer you question, I worked @ mechanic shop and it' not hard at all to get push to start. My boss & I wired one to the battery on a 98' Corvette cause the key was malfunctioning think the immoblizer or something was messing with it so we by-passed it & ran red/blk wire to the terminals through the firewall barrier & worked like a charm. Maybe it's easier cause old tech, but should still be same for key'ed cars unless Kia Immobilzer is safisticated then I'd prob pass as to not ruin your warranty mileage.
This is what I’m looking for, maybe even a base model. Nearest dealer is 104 miles away, not bad except for any warranty work - which seems not to be a big issue for this car.
Uwagghhhh this car is kinda my dream car 😭 it’s so cute and I have a very sentimental attachment to Mitsubishi so hopefully I can get myself a 2022 one 🤞
Ben: great review!!! I wonder if you could do a review of the Rockford-Fosgate audio system available as an option with the higher level versions of the Mirage. I know it's available with the S4 sedan top of the model line but I'm not sure if it's optional with the top version of the hatchback. Anyway, it's good to finally see a review of this little beast that's a positive one. So many haters for this small machine. Thanks! Looking forward...🙏♐
Rockford Fosgate is not standard nor included for the SE. it an added on accessory installed either by dealership or port…RF is starting to be discontinued, at least for the hatchback.
I love the chevy spark.. this looks like a fun little toy. It's cheap but dealerships don't like cash so if you finance this with bad credit a 10,000 dollar car will cost you 80,000 later
It's easy to make fun of the Mirage but think of this, these are things that are standard on the Mirage but were optional (or not available) on even large expensive Buicks Mercurys and Dodges not that many years ago: Power windows, power brakes, power steering, keyless power locks, automatic transmission, air conditioning, dual power side mirrors, AM FM radio, tachometer, cruise control, delay wipers, many airbags, (rear view camera and touch screen obviously would not have even been optional about 10 years ago on most cars). All of this while getting 40mpg , and probably faster than most cars built between 1975 and 2010. How far standard options have come, even if styling is... Meh. But economy cars normally aren't pretty. So when you start making fun of how "basic" this car is you should look and see what an actual basic car was like not that long ago, try driving a VW Beetle, Chevette, Pinto, Escort, Fiesta, Festiva, Neon, Geo, Fiat or Civic with crank windows no power steering and no air conditioning , no adjustable steering wheel, no tach, no body colored bumpers or maybe even no gas guage (Beetle), and usually not even a manual passenger side view mirror, any number of cars were truly that basic in 70s, 80s, 90s, even in 2000s. Even big cars like an Impala, Fury, Galaxie, and "luxury" coupes like Monte Carlos and most imports would lack many of these features. In many ways this car has every luxury feature that most people need other than the name plate and obviously not a lot of room, but as far as comfort and luxury features, it's really hard to be critical in any way of what this car offers for the price!
I was impressed with all of the creature comforts the '24 had. The only things I might add is remote start and heated seats. Anything additional would just be something that could break. US needs more cars like the Mirage.
You said it right. These are great cars. I owned 3 all purchased new a 2015 Mirage ES, 2017 Mirage G4 SE, 2021 Mirage SE and now own a 23 Nissan Kicks SR Premium. I loved all l3 of my Mirages and not 1 issue with any of them. I would have purchased a 4th but there were no more updates or redesigns planned for the USA and 2025 the Mirage will be gone. So unfortunately if I owuld have bought a 2023-2024 Mirage SE it would have been identical to my 21 Mirage SE with a few more features like auto on/off headlight lights, rain sensing wipers and such. However I am very pleased with my new Kicks and love it as much as I loved all my Mirages.
Crazy af, new ones are 18k in Tampa FL and used basically new are within the 10-15k range, just slightly more miles 60-100k you can find them for 5-7k around here. Very cheap for what you get. I found one for 7995 with low miles and was a 2018. So I’d shop around but paying more than 20 is asinine lmao you could get a civic or a much better car for that price. Hell my bmw x3 from 2015 that I just got over 100k miles with I only paid 16 for years back. Just got offered 12,000 cash for it. You gotta know what to look for
I think there should be way more of these types of cars.. but the issue is this should be a 12-4kCar for 18K you can go get a way nice car if you just spend another 2K
The Mitsubishi Mirage, faster than a bicycle, safer and cleaner than public transport, and offers more functionality than a scooter. What’s not to like about that?
Harvard University says a 155-pound person riding a bicycle at 12 mph will burn roughly 576 calories per hour. To replenish that, it will take approximately two medium-sized avocados at $1.62 per unit, according to the most recent Hass Avocado Board retail sales figures. Consequently, biking is roughly $0.27 per mile in avocados, with or without the toast. Fortunately, the Mitsubishi Mirage is much kinder to the environment. The American Automotive Association reports that as of May 22, 2023, nationwide average fuel prices are sitting at $3.54 per gallon for 87-octane pump gas. Given the Mirage’s EPA-rated 39 combined mpg, driving to work is just $0.09 per mile in the Japanese hatchback. And with the NHTSA’s (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) four-star crash safety rating, it’s a lot safer than your Cannondale.
Nice review. Love the punchy colors on the Mirage. Wish other brands offered them. I got an Uber ride in the sedan version recently including highway travel and it wasn't bad. I've read the Mirage will be dropped in the US by 2025. "Future classic"? Thailand is the Detroit of SE Asia. They build all kinds of cars and trucks there including BMW, Toyota, etc.
These were fantastic 4 years ago when they were commonly discounted under $10,500. Not at over $14,000. I’d recommend a used vehicle, like a low mileage Toyota Corolla. If you can get a base Mirage under $13,000 OTD, worth Buying. $18,000 is base Corolla. This dealer is on something.
yeah i agree 18k is not affordable. Poor people do not just have 18k lying around so the ones who can get 18k are not gunna save to buy a mirage. They made a big mistake selling this for that much. Not to mention they built this car for at most 4k
@@shinski8114 with 18k, there’s so many better options for less or a couple grand more, for sure. So many snatched up a new Mirage for $9500-13000 3-4 years ago. I came close to a new 18 close of the year for under $10,000. I still chose a 15 Scion XB manual with 31k miles for $1500 more. Seeing a Mirage for 18 grand further confirms new cars aren’t really worth considering. .
We purchased new in 20 and insurance now more than the car payment;( USAA said most dangerous vehicle made for a reasonable answer. No help from Mitsubishi on something else;(
This is so refreshing to see, a decent cheap car lol. It's sad that when I was a teenager in the early 90's there was a plethora of these small and economical cars around. Now Americans are obsessed with crossovers and trucks with high tech features and $1000+ car payments. Doesn't leave many options for people with lower income. Owning a car here is becoming a luxury.
Honestly I think a used Toyota would be better, these would be more appealing if they had a larger dealer network but where I'm from you have to drive close to 2 hours to get to a Mitsubishi dealer, which would really be a pain in the butt for WHEN this thing eventually breaks on you and you have to do warranty work. Kinda defeats the point of buying new, when you have to really go out of your way to use the warranty.
This is more reliable than any other brand new car for under $20k in the USA. Mitsubishi don't have reliability issues, so a breakdown is not the inevitability you pose it to be. This isn't the "cheapest car to buy in the USA", but it is the "cheapest car in the USA" due to the fact that it will be cheaper to own than any of its competitors when including all the factors that go into a total cost of ownership like fuel mileage, scheduled maintenance, and base price are combined. I wouldn't buy cars in this segment because of the lack of crash protection.

I never drove one, but I love me a crappy little hatchback that's reliable and cheap to run. The color palette that Mitsubishi uses is also a breath of fresh air. Not all black, white, and every shade in between.
It is a car. In this day and age, with the economy going down the drain, it does what it has to do. It’s sad, boring, but it costs way less than most cars. As a biker, I plan on buying this for the winter and just ride the bike in the summer.
With a manual, yes. With the CVT, I'd run the other way. I owned a new 2012 Versa and the car was good overall except the CVT was trash. Definitely drove nicer than the 2014 Mirage I replaced it with.

Another one bites the dust in lieu of the attack of the electric movement. Man, starting it with an actual key, the simplicity with hardly any features which keeps the focus on the car and the drive, and the sound of an engine all make Me want to drive this so bad. I don’t care about power. I would rather have a car that I can feel like I’m going fast in when I’m going 65 than be in a car that when you’re going 85 feels like nothing. Any recommendations on what new cars I should look into that would possibly still be left that I’m unaware of that would give me the same experience? Anyone?
Mitsubishi needs to make a actual 20k mini truck to compete against the maverick at 20k it would sell great considering the new maverick is 26k base just make it manual seats basic cruise control nothing fancy just a simple truck
I love this car. My only wish is that they added an electric portion to aid in acceleration and around the town driving and this vehicle would be the only car I’d drive until I die
The mirage is almost cool. But the wheels and tires are comically small. It would be a really nice looking car if not for that. It looks like it’s too big for the wheels
It’s very Japanese! That’s the kind of car most Japanese drive. Not the bulky Toyota Camry Americans love to drive. Interesting, had a Kia Optima before. Seems to be similar except a better warranty and proven to last pass 100,000 miles.
Thanks for the Review. I'm kind of disappointed in the Mirage's price considering I could get an entry level Nissan Versa for about the same price or less with manual shift. It's way more car than this is. My Brother bought one in 2022 and we drive from Ut to the Oregon Coast every year and it doesn't seem nearly as small, I think it's more comfortable than this little guy seems to be, and it gets 40mph + on the highway. I wonder which one depreciates the fastest, because I might look into a gently used one.

Sadly the Kia Rio is already gone, and there are rumors that this along with the Nissan Versa may not be long for this world much longer (at least here in the US).
Given it’s a Nissan, you’re probably going to need that warranty.
I am thinking of leasing one with the option to buy. All I need is air conditioning and a 5 speed gearbox if they have one.
More for local errands along surface roads..
not a Nissan. It’s a Mitsubishi. Deff different makers
@@gsmurph08 - Ha, easy to get those two mixed up in my brain. I actually didn’t even know Mitsubishi still made cars.
Isn't it a 10 yr 160,000 km powertrain warranty?
Also, tech stuff is only warranties for 2 years if I remember correctly
My lil brother is getting his license soon and I keep telling him to just get a used mirage. They’re cheap used and they’ll be really low on mileage.
I'd crack jokes but years ago I dated a girl that owned a Ford Fiesta. My clothes were worth more than that car. But it was great on gas lol
I have a 2016 Fiesta and love it. 45 MPG

It was boxy, white, and had a utilitarian Suzkuki Samurai vibe that I liked. He ended up giving it to my uncle and he ran it into the ground. Wish he gave me the car to learn on instead.
Oh a really old one. That’s before ford bought Aston and made the cool looking fiestas. The Aston grill fiestas are super nice. Way nicer than this
I still watch Mirage reviews from time to time even though it's been 5yrs since having my Mirage. I kind of miss it. I probably won't buy another though because I just don't feel safe in it with the maniacs on the road where I live.
for real haha in big trucks too forget about it
I guess the way you have to look at it is the Mirage is safer than being on a motorcycle.
I rented one for a month, and then rented it again for another month. It was reliable and spunky. I would buy one.
18,315.00 USD, I can’t afford the “cheapest” car in America. 😂
Did you say $18,000??
That seems like it's nearly double the price they were just a few years ago.
yeah everything doubled in price magically
Yup, I almost bought one new for $9500. I could see $12,500, even $13,000. 18 grand?!??? Get a a Corolla, for less Base!
This seems perfect for my first car. Also as someone who is 4'11 and 3 quarters us tiny ppl appreciate a small car lol. I am in love with the color and the manuel key
I own one wine red. Love it.😊
Wait… I had to do a double-take only seconds in because I got my Mitsubishi Mirage from a dealership called “Southtowne” in Newnan, GA.
@@dbzownz12345 oh cool! That is good to know!
I owned a 2017 mirage g4 and loved how gas efficient it was! It is very slow though so that was one thing I always complained about 😂😂😂
I love the chevy spark.. this looks like a fun little toy. It's cheap but dealerships don't like cash so if you finance this with bad credit a 10,000 dollar car will cost you 80,000 later
$15,000 is never dirt cheap!
people beat up on these cars but owners love them and they cost next to nothing to run
It's easy to make fun of the Mirage but think of this, these are things that are standard on the Mirage but were optional (or not available) on even large expensive Buicks Mercurys and Dodges not that many years ago:
Power windows, power brakes, power steering, keyless power locks, automatic transmission, air conditioning,
dual power side mirrors, AM FM radio, tachometer, cruise control, delay wipers, many airbags, (rear view camera and touch screen obviously would not have even been optional about 10 years ago on most cars).
Many people hate this vehicle. But for me it's a good. This is my personal car btw.
It’s fun driving slow cars fast , idk I always had fun throwing this car around, it’s so narrow and small , you can never run out of land
Where I live, Mirages are anything but cheap. My sister bought one for $25k when a Yaris at that time was for less than $20k
You gotta know what to look for
Over $13,000 base, I would not bother. 25k is a Subaru Impreza with several options.
I just got one. Take out the spare tire and get a tire repair kit with inflator. I’m getting 44.5 mpg going to work. 9 miles, all city.
I have the same color Mirage 💛 Thailand also builds some cars for Mazda for the Australian market.
Well said.

So many snatched up a new Mirage for $9500-13000 3-4 years ago. more small cars are wanted in North America ! Just needs more ponies, minimum 90hp !
They don’t sell. Americans want larger trucks and suvs. Hell I drove a smart for two and recently bought a 2023 Prius instead.

We purchased new in 20 and insurance now more than the car payment;( USAA said most dangerous vehicle made for a reasonable answer. No help from Mitsubishi on something else;(
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@jordanimatedstreamingTrue! The Mirage has been around since 2013. It been 10 years and sadly gonna be discontinued, supposedly speaking. The Mirage is a no BS car. Non owners hate it for silliest non-sense reason.

I have a 2008 Lancer manual with 274,000 kms on it and have never had any problem with engine or transmission and I have beaten the shit out of it. This car will probably last a long time if it's a manual.
I never drove one, but I love me a crappy little hatchback that's reliable and cheap to run. The color palette that Mitsubishi uses is also a breath of fresh air. Not all black, white, and every shade in between.
I would say the Nissan Versa S 5 Speed manual is actually the cheapest new car in the USA MSRP 18250 but I've seen them offer lightly below that.

It is a car. In this day and age, with the economy going down the drain, it does what it has to do. It’s sad, boring, but it costs way less than most cars.
As a biker, I plan on buying this for the winter and just ride the bike in the summer.
Honestly i was expecting a lower price for this. The nissan versa is a better option in my opinon especially the manual.
With a manual, yes. With the CVT, I'd run the other way. I owned a new 2012 Versa and the car was good overall except the CVT was trash. Definitely drove nicer than the 2014 Mirage I replaced it with.

You should follow the trend and tell the price first
Thanks for the Review.

I LOVE cheap cars. While this may be a little too cheap even for me, the more people make fun of it the more I kind of want one. Sadly the Kia Rio is already gone, and there are rumors that this along with the Nissan Versa may not be long for this world much longer (at least here in the US). If all of those cars go away, then really cheap sub-compacts like this might be a thing of the past. That makes me kind of sad!
