LG-2 overall sounded better to me. By the way, great job with the editing of these comparisons and I'm sure Quinton's ability to play at the same tempo consistently is a great help in that regard too
The melody/voice leading cuts better/pops more with the Gibson when fingerpicking. The Martin has more volume over all and sounds more hi-fi. I think this comparison really shows the inherent qualities traditionally associated with Martin (scooped mid) and Gibson (more mid-focused).
I have the Martin 00-18V. It is my favorite acoustic, just a great sounding guitar, and so fun and comfortable to play. The Gibson sounds a little bassier to me but sounds fantastic overall. Now I want both!
Great comparison! To my ear, it's a choice between a Gibson sound or a Martin sound - and they they both sound great. I'd probably tend toward the Martin, primarily because I don't need a pickup (and it seems all Gibson acoustics come with pickups)
I love and want them both. They're so radically different in sound, yet so similar in most other ways. There's a beautiful place for both of them. It would be the mood of the day to decide which one I'd pick. So cool! ❤️❤️
I own the Martin 00-18 and absolutely love it! I have a few guitars at this point, but the 00 seems to be the one I reach for the most. Now I really want an LG2 as well haha
Well, I think the Gibson sounds better in this instance. but & however, and this is not a criticism, but I think if you'd lay off the heavy picking the Martin might sound really sweet with clear ringing trebles
The midrange-focused Gibby sounds like a blues machine! The Martin is your typical all-around Martin sound… just fantastic. I’m still a -15 hog fan though, so they still aren’t for me.
Great video. Two great guitars and as you said, two different sounds. I am a Martin guy, own two, have owned others plus an L00 Gibson. I love them all but I was in Carters guitars in Nashville a few months back and got to play a true 1950’s LG2 and it was amazing. Wanted it, couldn’t afford it, but even in this video the Gibson sounds so good. Thank you for another great video
Hey guys! Does anyone happen to notice that the LG-2 headstock in this video is the old cursive "Gibson". I have the 50's LG-2 but it is the standard printed on logo. I am beginning to wonder if this particular LG-2 they are playing is a custom version that has an adirondack top. Thoughts?
I've played both Both are spruce top with mahogany back and side. The bracing is different which adds to the difference (Martin vs Gibson). The other difference is the body width. The 0018 is a thinner body so brighter sound, LG2 is a fuller sound with more low end as its wider. Both play and sound great just depends upon if you want the Martin sound or the Gibson sound.
Agreed both are good. The LG sounds somewhat glassy and trebled, more suited to bluesy stuff...the Martin is rounder and sweeter toned to me and I'm guessing the Martin is built lighter!
I hope Gibson releases a more affordable LG-2. A walnut studio LG-2 would be amazing. Such a cool guitar. I also hope They reissue an LG-1, but I’m a sucker for ladder braced blues boxes
That's the reason I just bought a 1971 mint condition Gibson B-25 Deluxe, the more narrow neck fits my hand far better. I swapped a 2010 Martin D-18 standard for it. My '71 B-25 Deluxe is at a really good luthier's shop getting a neck reset and a compensated bone saddle- $500.00. Oh well, it's worth it to me. The Martin in the video has the better sound to my ear, but it's a close call. The 1968 Gibson B-25 that I bought used in 1969 was stolen in 2000, and I'm very happy to have swapped for the '71 Deluxe. I went across town to play a '67 B-25 and a new Martin 00-18. The Martin has a fuller sound, but with a Berringer, preamp connected to a Boss VE-8, there is no difference, to my ear anyway. Plus, the Gibson is a lot easier to play for my hand. The Gibson being played in this video is the newer re-issue that has a wider neck, I think. Both the '71 Deluxe & the re-issue are both X-braced which gives more volume. $3,000 is a lot of money, so sit down and play each one of them before deciding. They are both fine guitars.
As much as I am in the Gibson Camp owning a j45 myself, I got to hand this one to the 0018. That is one sweet little guitar. Now Martin needs to do us all a favor and bring back the 0018v
If you listen to when he plays the LG2, you can hear the good amount of Bass that it exhibits! I have a new 50s LG2 and this guitar just sounds amazing! Playability is excellent and the neck reminds me a little of my 50s Les Pauls. With the Gibson 12 strings on, it is killer! The whole guitar has a certain vibe to it. I also have a new D28 that is fantastic too. The LG2 has a rounder neck. The D28 looks to be slightly higher quality. (Not by much). The tuners on the LG2 are its only real weak points. Martin tuners are much better! Also the case that comes with the LG2 is very heavy. Its nice but big and heavy, while my D28 and it's case are considerably lighter package.
Both great sounds….but my question is does Gibson have their WORKMANSHIP game back together? If not I’ll easily take Martin over a sloppy Gibson. Anybody have any thoughts?
Both are great. A tough one. I like the 00 size when I can't do the large body. As I get older, I have more days when dreads are not comfortable to play. If I had to pick up one... maybe the Gibson? Or no, the Martin? But wait...
Well, you can't hide the fact that the Martin is a Martin. The Gibson, with the right microphone, could be disguised as several other guitars. That Martin, though, just gives itself away.
The 00-18 was not the same as the 00-18v.. wimpy by comparison. I liked the Gibson a lot, but please, no pick-up. I would opt for the Gibson but, I just don't see the money/value in the guitar, I see the money/value in the Martin. But here's a however: I will no longer buy new Martins based on several unfortunate experiences with 5 out of 8 new Martins since 2000 and substandard customer service.. No longer the same company as it was pre CFM IV.
Paul, what happened to details? Nut spacing etc. Paul don’t be lazy, if you’re going to do a video for the viewing audience then please be more thorough. The comments section is you’re grading platform. Thanks
If this was my passion and my job. I would know and research every detail of the product i was trying to sell. Specefic tone woods, style of braceings, nut width, string spaceing, materials used for nut and saddle, brand name of tuners, rosette, and binding materials. Stsy to the task at hand and stop deviating from the most important topic with loose idle conversation. Condense your sales presentation quickly, and efficiently and leave time for more demonstrations in playing the instrument. Talk ,talk is talk... just play the damn instruments moreband let them sell themselves. You guys act like you are makeing a desperate attempt to keep from going under. Not good....
LG-2 overall sounded better to me.
By the way, great job with the editing of these comparisons and I'm sure Quinton's ability to play at the same tempo consistently is a great help in that regard too
How about comparing a Martin jumbo with Gibson j200? :-)
Not going to comment on the sound but instead praise you for this little run of comparison of small bodied guitars. I am enjoying it. :)
The melody/voice leading cuts better/pops more with the Gibson when fingerpicking. The Martin has more volume over all and sounds more hi-fi. I think this comparison really shows the inherent qualities traditionally associated with Martin (scooped mid) and Gibson (more mid-focused).
Now that's how you do a comparison! Fantastic job.
I have the Martin 00-18V. It is my favorite acoustic, just a great sounding guitar, and so fun and comfortable to play.
The Gibson sounds a little bassier to me but sounds fantastic overall. Now I want both!
WOW, I have been wanting a smaller guitar for just setting and picking. I love both of those. Wishing I had Both.
I have the 00-18 and I love it. The right guitar is the one that speaks to you.
Have to be the LG2 for me - absolutely love the mid range on Gibson acoustics
I have a D18 and thinking about getting either of these, or maybe a CEO-7.. hmm.
The Martin for me! It seems clearer, the LG has more overtones.
Great comparison! To my ear, it's a choice between a Gibson sound or a Martin sound - and they they both sound great. I'd probably tend toward the Martin, primarily because I don't need a pickup (and it seems all Gibson acoustics come with pickups)
Different guitar voices for different songs. Thanks Quinton and Paul.
I love and want them both. They're so radically different in sound, yet so similar in most other ways. There's a beautiful place for both of them. It would be the mood of the day to decide which one I'd pick. So cool! ❤️❤️

Yasss thank youuu for not pitting the custom Gibson vs the standard Martin this time. Appreciate it great video. Both sound awesome
It's so weird. At the beginning of the video I 100% preferred the 0018. But on the back-end comparisons I preferred the LG2. Gotta get both I guess.
Martin for me all day long. Even though they are are close
me too but the gibson was suprisingly good. I would love to have that little 00 martin!!
Thanks for this, I wouldn’t trade my CEO 7 for either. Love to see LG2 Historic 1942 in the mix.
The midrange-focused Gibby sounds like a blues machine! The Martin is your typical all-around Martin sound… just fantastic. I’m still a -15 hog fan though, so they still aren’t for me.
The LG-2 is clearer in the midrange with a bit less lowend and rounder on the top. They both sound really good - just depends on what you like.
Great video. Two great guitars and as you said, two different sounds. I am a Martin guy, own two, have owned others plus an L00 Gibson. I have a J-45 red spruce, and 00-18 Martin slope shoulder spruce/mahogany.
I have my eye on a LG2, but I'm probably just being an idiot.
Apples and oranges. Get one of each!
Hey guys! Does anyone happen to notice that the LG-2 headstock in this video is the old cursive "Gibson". I have the 50's LG-2 but it is the standard printed on logo. I am beginning to wonder if this particular LG-2 they are playing is a custom version that has an adirondack top. Thoughts?
Banner is thermally aged spruce whereas yours is stika spruce... kind of the same to be honest
gotta go with the LG-2 just sounds more focused and tighter. Martin sounds great too

Could not discern the difference in the two but both guitars will always sound great in the hands of Quinton.
@@jamesmcgraw724 I think we could all take some lessons from Quinton!! He's got magic fingers!!
LG-2 for me, though I have a bunch of Martins...LOL
Agreed both are good. The LG sounds somewhat glassy and trebled, more suited to bluesy stuff...the Martin is rounder and sweeter toned to me and I'm guessing the Martin is built lighter!

The LG-2 American Eagle is good value. I picked one up for 950usd recently. I know it doesn't have the burst and is more like an LG-3.
What about the neck shape, nut width, string spacing and feel?
That's the reason I just bought a 1971 mint condition Gibson B-25 Deluxe, the more narrow neck fits my hand far better. I swapped a 2010 Martin D-18 standard for it. Great comparison! The Gibson rings truer to me.
I have a 1946 LG-2 and a 1971 00-18 that
Has a Brazilian
Fretboard bridge and pegboard overlay. The LG-2 is my favorite
Gibson sounds more balanced in the mid range but it has a real spike around 1k?
LG-2 for me because its sunburst, I like that color.
Thank you for the video! *gotta have both!
Gibson sounds warmer…Marten sounds mid scooped but with pick played closer the bridge…looks and warm sounds goes to Gibson
The LG sounds more open to me. Nobody mentioned the LG has a larger sound hole. I think that is a big part of its voice
00-18 sounded more like what I would like while the LG2 sounded a bit boxy.
If you listen to when he plays the LG2, you can hear the good amount of Bass that it exhibits! I have a new 50s LG2 and this guitar just sounds amazing! I ordered Gotoh 510s the day I ordered the L-00 standard.
They are pretty expensive, both... so everything comes to a matter of taste and possibilities...
What about including a CEO-7 or Iris OG?
guild m40
@@646oleg i was looking at Made in USA. Is that Guild US made ?
@@texhaines9957 yes it's made in California. M20 is all mahogany M40 is spruce top.
the 00-18 is so beautiful and the sound is my choice
Both great sounds….but my question is does Gibson have their WORKMANSHIP game back together? If not I’ll easily take Martin over a sloppy Gibson. Anybody have any thoughts?

If I had to pick up one... maybe the Gibson? Or no, the Martin? But wait...
What’s the first song he plays on the LG2?
They each sound different, but both are great. I could flip a coin and be very happy with either one.
What was the song he played at the end to compare the two? Sounds so familiar but I can’t place it.
What if Gibson made an OM style acoustic? That might be cool
I would pick the one that compliments my voice the best. Since I'm in the lower registers it would probably be the 00-18.
Well, you can't hide the fact that the Martin is a Martin. The Gibson, with the right microphone, could be disguised as several other guitars. That Martin, though, just gives itself away.
Don't know why Gibson doesn't make a 000 size j-45.....
Now, double track a stereo part with one L , the other R , and it would sound heavenly
Gibson has more midrange, as Gibsons usually do.
I’m a Martin guy but that Gibson sounds fantastic! I would buy it over a 0018 if I was to choose based on this video.
Its a tie! We need both, then you have most things covered.🎉
that LG-2 sounds fantastic!
The Martin sounds brighter overall...to me.
GSP!
You can literally that LG2 have significantly more bass than the 00-18!!
Gibson
And the winner is Martin
LG2 is "bad ass"..like all Gibsons
I prefer the Martin..
The 00-18 was not the same as the 00-18v.. wimpy by comparison. I liked the Gibson a lot, but please, no pick-up.
I would opt for the Gibson but, I just don't see the money/value in the guitar, I see the money/value in the Martin.

Martin all the way
the spectrum twins
Quinton looking jacked lol
gibson >>
Martin.
More voice on Martin
So tiny for that attacks ouch
For me the Gibson.
Paul, what happened to details? Nut spacing etc. Paul don’t be lazy, if you’re going to do a video for the viewing audience then please be more thorough. The comments section is you’re grading platform. Thanks
Gibson acoustics all sound like a wet box to me, I really don’t understand the appeal. Is it just because famous people play them?
Too small. Prefer larger body. Sounds did not impress me.
This was not a video to sell you on a small bodied guitar, but a comparison of two small bodied guitars.
