  • In this video I try to give a detailed walk-around of a 1951 John Deere Model A. I tried to point out what each of the levers and parts of the tractor are, as well as how they are used. The Model A is an icon American tractor, so I hope many out there will this video both useful and informative.
I did this out of memory and without script, so please forgive any errors.

Dad started farming for him self in 1946. He bought his dad's1936 a. In 1951 he bought a 1950 g. His comment was this. The model g was the best of the best!

Just purchased a ‘51 A 2 days ago. Hasn’t run in 5 years. Was thinking I would change the crankcase oil, hydraulic and gear case. Glad to hare you recommend it. I know almost nothing about tractors, your video is a big help. Looking forward to getting it running.

Great video Kyle. I first watched a couple of years ago and still think your bale feeder is the best thing since sliced bread. I grew up on the old two cylinders and have 3 of my own. My pride and joy is my 1930 unstyled D on steel. My grandfather had it as long as I could remember. I just got it running after it sat in pieces for many years.

Kyle, nice video. I was young when my father bought the style 'A' like you displayed at a dealer in Lennon, Michigan and we farmed about 1400 acres near there. We had fenders. Ours was set up for 36" rows. Early on in its life, we used it to pull a 3/16" plow. We had hard clay in places. We also used it to pull a 495A John Deere planter. We'd hook up a 4 row cultivator for corn. I'd go through 600 acres every year. Our family farm bought another used 'A'. My father put a bigger block in our original 'A' to increase the horse power and we pulled 4/16". I think we got 52 horses from that block? We had the factory Roll-O-Matic. The clutch lever got my knee big time a couple of times. Had the rock stopper hooked up for the plow. The "Becareful" sign always stuck with me. Always checked the oil, water, and turned the pitcock checking for water in the gas. What stands out in my mind about our A? Reliability! I remember cultivating a field with the A. Over in the next field was a young man about a year older. His name was Alex Zsigo. He was using a John Deere 70 cultivating like hell. I asked my dad why couldn't we go faster? Well, we couldn't. Later Alex was drafted and sent to Vietnam by LBJ! He was killed in June of 1967 the same month I had to go. As he lay wounded, the NVA come along and shot about 40 of them in the head with a shotgun blast. The 173rd was wiped out. Worse than Custer. Look up Alex. I was drafted at almost age 20. I was sent to the Republic of Vietnam. I got blown up. I got back and never went back to farming. I got all those fancy degrees. I interned under the crook Governor Jimmy Carter '74. My first meeting in DC was with a drunk democRAT senator named Talmadge '75. The democRAT Congressman I worked with went to jail. These politicians hate you. All they want is to enslave you. I got out of government after 2 years. I'm very lucky. My last work year, I paid over $35,000 in taxes to the feds. Good luck pardner. Eaglegards...

Kyle, I’m like you, I’m not crazy about those automatic fuel shutoff bowls.
I prefer the manual ones that have the shutoff knobs. When I’m done running mine, I shut the gas off, and let it run until it dies and then turn the ignition off.

That's a nice straight A. They were great tractors for their time. When my grandfather started farming on his own, the first tractor he bought new was a '51 A single front wheel (vegetable model) with tall rubber and long axles. The vegetable models actually had round axle housings rather than square, even the very late ones.

The 1951 and 1952 A’s are my favorite years of the Model A.
I’ve got a 1952 A, and it runs as steady and nice as it did when it was new. It’s going to need some work someday though, as mine is 90% original.
I like the slant dash A’s too, but the square battery box seat is more comfy. lol

Yes, I should have mentioned that the wider axles (from the AW and AN models) still had the round axles... Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey Kyle, nice job on this video. My Dad bought his 1st tractor brand new when he came home from WW2. Bought both that and a 2-14's pull type plow. Traded the A off for a 630. That was quite a quantum leap from the A.

My dad had two A tractors. Both were electric start 6 speeds built before 1947. There is only one drain for the engine oil. There are at least two drain plugs for the transmission. My 60 also has a drain for the reduction gear but I didn't happen to see wether or not your A had one. Nice old tractor. She sure runs good.

Thanks, Dan! I believe you are correct. The next one back is for the transmission. I don't know why I was thinking it too was for the crank. Two plugs for the transmission, one for the crank. I had that backwards lol. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Kyle,
I really enjoyed this video as I did not know a lot of the characteristics about a John Deere A. The earliest John Deere that I grew up with was a JD 2010 gas. I enjoyed that video as well. I hope that you will do more videos about the tractors that you own as they are very educational.
    Respectfully,
    James from East Tennessee

Can you tell me what the line is that’s running from the oil bath air cleaner to the governor housing? Somehow that line for me is putting water back into the crank case. Not sure how.

How many quarts of oil does that engine hold. We changed the engine oil and added until it came out that top plug that you say is the oil pressure adjustment we must have way too much oil in ours.

what is the lever by the seat left hand side

    • @KyleWeber
      @KyleWeber  2 роки тому +1

I'm embarrassed that I forgot to mention that! That's the lever to control the hydraulics. Depending on the plugs used, it with either raise the rocker arms (gravity to pull downwards), or run the hydraulics if you have something piped into it. You can switch the lever to the left or right side. I put it on the left so I could run the clutch and raise/lower the rocker arms at the same time (which were controlling the No. 5 mower). You kind of have to hold the steering wheel with you knee...
