This video helped me so much! I was searching through a couple videos but you explained it really well for me so thank you! Excited to use the plug in you recommended. I think it is my missing ingredient!
very helpful I found the comp placement piece to be something I haven’t been using enough of and plan on taking advantage of a lot more to better takes. Great video
I want to say thank you because I always felt like I was never to really sit my voice on instrumental and now I see that it has a lot to do with a lot of things that I never even thought of the biggest one here was the VU meter that is huge and thank you so much for sharing. Can't wait to try it when I get home today. Would you happen to have any tips on making sure that our voice doesn't overpower the sound and maybe sitting the voice on the track correctlyhas been my lifelong struggle
Great one Colin. I haven't watched your earlier videos of this series because I was busy shooting video for my latest song and my time is now very occupied in reorganising my UA-cam music channel. Thanks for the great labour you are putting into this very difficult to understand field of audio🙏.
Thanks so much for the VU meter recommendation! I just downloaded one and it has made such a difference! Before, I was only getting small waveforms and now my vocals are so much crisper and louder and the waveforms are bigger! Thanks Colin.
I hung up some blankets behind my microphone and it has made such a difference in my recordings! Thanks Colin! P.s. what do you think about the idea of having your mic in a padded box on a stand with one side open so you can sing into it? That's what I've done as a shortcut to treating the whole room. Works well with blankets behind.
What are your thoughts about using an acoustic shield such as the sE Electronics Reflexion Filter X Portable Vocal Booth to reduce the influence of the room "sound" for acoustic guitar or vocal recording?
Comping trick I use: record all your takes on one track, split it into regions, then choose whichever take for that split region you want. No copy pasting or multiple tracks involved.
Yeah, I was wondering about this Colin - why don't you use this trick that @michaelkoykka3149 refers to. I also discovered this technique a few weeks ago - that in cycle mode you can create multiple takes on one track, then just go through them, and at points where i want to use a different take, I can cut it, then in the next region choose the take i want to come in next. I'm assuming you're aware of this method but don't use it because of certain potential downsides? Thanks for all your insights! @TheBandGuide
More like comping it 20 times 😂 my memory is the size of a xmass cracker joke so I struggle with recording vocals. Need lyrics written where I can see them and securely stuck up. The amount of paper crinkles I used to get when I held the paper or the times it dropped down halfway through cos I didn’t stick it up properly. I m used to being on stage too so I have to deliberately stop myself being performer too much and moving around 😂
When I record my band mates or other musicians when they say to me they’re ready to try a first time practice along with the audio we have I always hit record without them realising m, cos more often than not that fist trial is the best take they play as it’s usually most natural, best feel, best feel. When they know they’re being recorded they’re thinking to much about playing it correctly and loses so much feel or becomes to static and rigid. Most of all the majority suffer from Red light fever and it can all go out of the window.
Ahoy Colin, quick question do you always Record Vocals in Mono (then copy them to pan them left and right) rather than recording them in Stereo?? Or when adding ghost tracks, that may or may not have added grit...lol. Another great video. Thanks for all your help. A Star you are.
If you're hitting the notes, then it's just a matter of getting better at recording & mixing it. If you're not hitting the notes... then you need to be honest with yourself and decide if you need singing lessons or an outside singer. Good luck.
The voice is an instrument. Like a guitar sometimes you might hit the wrong notes which means you shift to the next not and soon til it sound in key. You got this
I`m confused. My Shure 58 mic is recording my vocal track in mono (via scarlett 2i2). Apparently it is correct to record vocals in mono? Your vocal tracks seem to have two green bars within them so, they are stereo? Thank you (I enjoyed the video).
Hi Fred, He is using two mics because he is recording both this video and the song on the same track. Your SM 58 will record in mono. What you are doing is correct. Keep at it and best of luck.
Comping the vocal takes has had mixed results for me. On the one hand, it does help get the absolute best version you can do, but on the other, my laptop can't handle lots of tracks (even muted ones) playing at once, and I have wasted a lot of time when the recordings started spluttering and lagging, trying to work out what was wrong, when it was just that I had recorded too many takes and my computer wasn't able to keep up.

I love comping vocals. It takes so much of the pressure off trying to get a perfect take. That is one of the best tips I've got out of your videos.
that is exactly what I thought. I'd even go further, using it to glitch between different feelings
Doing gods work 🫡
Watching the comping in practice was very useful. Thanks!
very helpful, thank you so much!!
nice tutorial.
Very clear.😀
Very helpful. I'm just dabbling in recording for the first time and several of these tips are going to be used immediately. Thanks!
This is outstanding content. Informative and professional, thank you.

Excellent! Great workflow for comping vocals, will definitely be using this approach. Thanks for sharing, really appreciated. 😎😎😎
Thank you very much for this great toturial video. I am going to see from the Pt 1 now...
It was worth watching just to see you edit "maybe" getting rid of the glitch...Thanks

Dig it.. can you explain how you elongated the line or blew it up so you could get a more surgical splice? Thanks

Love the comping concept! I am definitely giving that a try. Great tutorial. Do you know if the trimming feature is available in GarageBand iOS?
Hello. Does it have a major effect if i use only dynamic mic rather than a condenser microohone?
How do you download your piano accompaniment on garage band from sibelius in order to record your voices on top of the accompaniment?

how do i save my eq and track settings so that everytime i enter garageband my settings are ready for me to record?
i thought my song sounded good until i went to record the vocals 💀 i sound absolutely horrible

When I sing high or low note or have a long note my mic doesn’t record it :/
Do someone know why ?

I'm having a hard time following you. You didn't break down how you used other external devices to do your vocal recording.
So helpful thank you. The entire guide has been great!
