This was a nice, clean job that results in a good tool. Something that I'd been planning on doing "soon" for a while now. Time for "soon" to be "now". Thanks for the demonstration and the motivation. Looking forward to seeing it in use.

As usual, a very nicely done video. I'm concerned, however, that you didn't stress the importance of choosing the correct piece of steel. The pop up text said that it was tool steel usually used for tooling in a metal lathe. Many, perhaps most, woodturners don't understand the different properties of steels and the infleunce of heat treating. A commenter said that he made a parting tool from a file. Very BAD idea! The topic of steel selection for shop made tools starts with old files are suitable for recycling but NOT being turned into tools. Obviously you know this, but my experience with safety is that it is not wise to assume other people understand what you consider obvious.

John ,you are right sir, I should have done that and I don't encourage viewers to use rasps or files although I learn my trade on those as they were none of the good tools here in Croatia..... Thank you for suggestion 😀

Thank you for watching, 🤗 you could do that but for me as I use scraper I find it quite easy to just round everything and cut the notch later, its a very quick process and its not nessesary to do every time while at the grinder😉 so hope that helpes a bit😀

Thank you, there are awsome scrapers already made by sorby and Henry taylor so maybe worth looking.... Some 3/8 or 10mm thick ones are on my list from sorby🤗
I made a thin (3/32-inch, 2.4mm) parting tool from a small file yesterday. I made a stepped-diameter hole in the handle, too. Works great.

Great video as always. Did you ever consider the left side only to about 1/2-3/4 of an inch from the end then you would not need to grind the additional square at the tip.

So it's taking longer than I anticipated to grind the file. My angel grinder needed a new disk before I started and it is taking a lot of punishment. I have a perfect piece of wood in mind for the handle though. I just want to get the steel done before I make the handle so I can use it right away.
@@archiehebron8944 be carefull if its from files, it can snap as files are extremely hard but brittle....just be aware of that.....

I made a bowl scraper like this but I wasn't sure is the shank was long enough so I welded about 3 to 4 inches of steel rod on so it went further in handle. Do you think it's ok to leave shorter? I am planning.on making another scraper...
Thanks for watching, well if you look at buyed version those have around 2- 2,5 inch long shanks, and they work ok... I would say nice solid ferrule and solid/proper way of attaching to the handle and you should be ok.... Just be aware this scraper I used for outside where the overhang isn't too big, for bottom of the bowls I would use 8 or 10mm thick steel
Hey, I'm following you since the collaboration project with Richard Raffan and I really enjoy your content! I'm currently also trying to use scrapers (as Richard often uses some in his videos that make it look way easier and faster than using a gouge). Right now I only have a 16 x 8 mm one (I'm still looking for a good steel 30 x 10 mm) shaped more or less like yours. Using it has been problematic to say the least 😅 I'm often getting catches and don't know why. So I'm looking forward to your next video and hope it clears up my mistakes. Keep up your good content! I'm planning on making a video on correct use as well as the next one which is more on different type of approch.... ... Richard has a tip on every video when he uses scraper and that is it has to be less then 90 degress approch.... And really light touch... but hopefully next video will help you out a bit....

Hi, nice little project. Was this steel heat treated before you started the project or is this tool made from annealed steel without heat treatment?
Its did go through heat treatman as pretty much all our woodturning tools which are already shaped to use..... 😉
Very nice....was there any trouble with overheating of the tool blank when using the hand grinder for cutting and shaping? Didn't notice you quenching the blank during that phase. Nice scraper indeed! 👍
Thank you, It did get hot a bit but I let it cool down without any help of water or oil.... My understanding is that you can even bring it up blue , and everything will be ok unless you don't dunk it in water.... For hss steel anyway.... You'll see how it perform in next video along with 5 methods I have in tehnique arsenal to get best possible surface on wood before sanding 👍

I'm in the process of rebuilding this scraper. In the meantime, the HSS steel has been cut, the handle turned and the iron hammered into the handle. Now I want to make the cutting edge. What angle did you use? I seem to remember you talking about 45 degrees in another video. Is that correct? Thanks for the answer and by the way, orange and walnut go well together 😉.

I would stay away from files , they are hard but brittle, and could snap in no time....

I don't measure it, I just go by look and I know how it will perform, but its really close to 45-50
