Listening because I miss my Mom. She died at age 81, from Covid, at 2:02 pm on Jan 21, 2021. Moms are magical. Spend as much time as possible with her.
Okay. He's using old records to manipulate and create new sounds which are reminiscent of genres such as post-rock with the crescendos and is making an ultimately unique and interesting song while still staying original to a song nearly everyone is familiar with, which, believe you me, is not easy. Plus the fact that this is entirely mixed live with incredible attention to detail and precise scratches that don't take away from the rhythm whatsoever takes serious talent. And it sounds good.
True art form of turntablism. No laptops (serrato) or any beat machines used for sampling. Just three turntables and a mixer. Real skill and on-the-spot mixing that not too many dj's these days do and that's why it is a classic
When we started turntabling we didn't have no fancy schmancy pitch controls. You had to spin the Schellack in the right speed. Kids these days are spoiled with their electricity and their "vinyls". If youre a real dj you only need two phonautographs a lead cylinder and some creativity.
Such a cool, happy guy. Every shot of him performing is a shot of him smiling, having a good time, playing for his audience enthusiastically. Such an artist. Koala puts the able in turntable.
I just found kid koala 4 levels down from seatching for someone else, from Ingenuity fest in Cleveland Ohio yesterday. So blessed and grateful! At 70, a Mom and G-Ma, this is one of my favorite songs. I had no idea who he is nor what he does. I was literally blown away and my heart broke open and my eyes leaked. And then, his parting verbiage, " take care of each other" put me over the top! 💜🎶 🌟 Angels all around and Miracles Never Cease! 🙏
I don't know how many times ive come back to this video over the last few years, this is one of my favorite moments on UA-cam, Thanks for capturing it Ankur!
how do you play a record like it’s an instrument? kid koala never ceases to amaze me. listening to his records always leaves me wondering how he’s doing what he does, but seeing it live only leaves me wondering even more, truly unmatched
To this day one of the greatest routines of all time. I feel so fortunate to have seen him perform this live (2013 in toronto) and to say it had an impact on the crowd is an understatement - legit a whole group of grown folk in tears. Salute Kid Koala
Koala is such a great turntablist. his stutter effect always fascinated me when i hear it on record. and hearing this is infinitely touching, as this was one of the last tunes my late cousin took the ride to at the place of rest, with a photo of beautiful photo of audrey hepburn by her coffin. a great tribute koala. thanks.
Seriously tho. Best song. I keep coming back to this. Koala, you rock! I wanna hear you do more super bittersweet mixes of oldies ... I would give my left nostril.
I don't know- the kid loves what he does, and loves his mother. He's adding a new sound to a classic song to show it to a different generation of people. I don't get how that's so hard to understand. I love my mother.
Good point taking a melodic AND slow song and mixing it is SO SO much harder, completely unforgiving... Like watch style dance, The slower it is the easier it is for people to notice your mistakes and the more it's related to Melody versus heavy beats when things don't pair it's so painfully obvious.
look at 3:45, the fascination and the joy in the man's face in the yellow shirt, how respectful and emotionally touched everybody is, this is truly a unique unique masterpiece. So beautiful to look at ..
i personally believe turntablist 'music' needs to be seen. listening their songs/albums is great and all, but when you see what they're actually doing, even if you don't fully comprehend it, it's like a hundred times better.
Jacob Collier can't be compared to this version. Koala's version is his own thing & still moves me in ways after almost a decade. One can go into a loop for days by listening to both of these improvisations back to back. In the end, it's a win for Team Music 🏆
When I saw him live, he elaborated that his mom always urged him to be a surgeon because of how steady his hands were. However, in the end she wanted him to be happy and supported him.
If anyone has doubt that there is real skill in this art form, this video should dispel it. Just amazing virtuosity, and true musicianship! Love it, and you MUST check out his 12 bit Blues record.
That's Alan this is in Madison for la Fett Musique electronique it's always a good time real good DJs every summer plus other gigs all year remain in night face book
Broadening one's horizon is generally a good idea in my opinion. Maybe you should try it before you knock it :) "With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts were getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know."
it sounds like when loneliness sing to the outerspace and I cried (sorry for my poor english I'm a fucking foreigner but try my best to connect to the world, to believe there is love and peace inside the human beings)
I just have to say that for one reason this made me cry, human being are so fucking amazing no matter whats, if the world has come to an end, god is gonna regret that no else is gonna make him happy in anyway, cause we bring to this earth the most beautiful things and also we can brings the worst but hold always what is good to you and smile even if your eyes are crying and then you will reach, may be, real happiness :D

Very sorry to hear that
Lost mine around the same time. Hope you're doing as well as possible friend
@@jaceshaffer8104 I'm so sorry. I hope the same for you.
Listening for the first time in a decade, my best friend showed it to me in highschool and passed about a year ago. Reminds me of him
@@leftovernoise I am so sorry. You must be heartbroken. My heart is with you.

I come from 10 years in the future and even today this performance stands out from anything I've ever seen from DJs.

it wasnt just 3 turntables and a mixer, he also had a reverb pedal. Still awesome though
That mixer definitely has some of the same effects
This is hands down the most beautiful and touching performance I have ever seen or heard on vinyl.
I'm literally weeping
T G T 💫 🙌🙌
110% A+greed
💫 🍃 💛💛🍃
I gave him a hug afterwards and was the best one ever
2023 and im weeping too. this was and always will be amazing@@develupa
you're so lucky
Seriously underrated. Kind of sad he isn’t mentioned in more “Best DJ’s” discussions.
becaus he is out of competition:)
i like the song, the idea but the execution leaves my to question why even scratch over it, just let it play this time
Those who know, know.
Genuinely.
Because he IS the best
Such a cool, happy guy. Every shot of him performing is a shot of him smiling, having a good time, playing for his audience enthusiastically.
Such an artist.
Koala puts the able in turntable.
this is one the greatest moments in modern music history

There are times in your life when you have to stand in awe and just enjoy the moment for what it is. This is one of them.
Just saw this live last night. Incredible... Can't stop listening now
Brings a tear, easily one of the greatest out there.

I was just blessed to see this live in Vancouver during a “music to draw to event” in November 2024. Completely mind blowing and beautiful.
Seriously tho. Best song. I keep coming back to this. Koala, you rock! I wanna hear you do more super bittersweet mixes of oldies ... I would give my left nostril.

who else you know who can remix a slow song like this? this guy is a God on the turn table

Like watch style dance, The slower it is the easier it is for people to notice your mistakes and the more it's related to Melody versus heavy beats when things don't pair it's so painfully obvious.
so dope...i listen to this at least 2x year for at least 5years now.....
Saw him perform Moon River in London in 2005...never thought I'd be listening to that at a gig! Unforgettable!
I think I was at this gig, wasn't he supporting and had none of his records, had to spend a day buying enough vinyl for a set?
This had me absolutely mesmerized... amazing.
that just brought tears to me eyes
Me too!
This is pure genius! I love this every time I watch this video!
It's still the most amazing DJ this world has ever graced us. Happy Mothers Day 2024.
He took that to a new level@that tone play solo?my head blew up!!BOOM!WOW!

Just saw this live in Victoria, astounding!
Few year later i finally found this song again
This is amazing. He has got so much talent.
One of the most musical turntable performances ever.
