A.R. Rehman does not copy music, he doesn't need to. His a legend! The Urvashi song was released in 1994 and Will.Iam song was released in 2014. Facts say it all.

AR Rehman did this song in 1994 . This is Original. He has learnt Indian Classical music, got a scholarship to study Western Classical Music ( in Trinity College Oxford) from where he graduated. The rest is history. He is a composer and singer and is a two time winner ( Academy Award in 2009, Grammy in 2010) and 5 time nominee of the academy award and innumerable awards in India. He was asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to write a stage musical, where he worked with lyricist Don Black and composed the score for Bombay Dreams, a colorful satire of Bollywood films. The show opened in London’s West End in 2002. He is 55 yrs old and is a phenomenon. Berklee College of music in Boston, USA has an Indian Ensemble which has recorded 17 of his songs as a tribute to him. It is a treat to hear them ( for a music lover). He also runs a school of Music in India.

True story: My friend was a sound engineer for A R Rahman MTV India unplugged. he said... middle of a song he stops the recording and asks the 3rd violinist from the left in the last row to tune his second string while 50 other instruments are playing at the same time. A R is a genius.

I'm Tamil (but from Sri Lanka) and we grew up listening to AR Rahman, and he's still one of my most played artists ever. The influence he had not only in India, but the entire South Asia/ and South Asian diaspora is immeasurable.

This song was originally created by AR Rahman in 1994 for a movie. This is a remastered version. He has always been much ahead of the times. Songs he wrote 25 years ago, wouldn’t feel out of place even today.
And though AR Rahman won an Oscar for Slumdog, I personally feel those songs can’t hold a candle to his other Indian music

You have asked about how musicians are taught in India. With percussion musicians the beats and rhythms and songs were taught vocally first. There was nothing written down. The teacher would teach the students to make the sounds with their mouths first. Once they were memorized and learned, the students were given the percussion instruments and taught to make the drums, etc., to mimic the sounds they were making with their mouths.
That is what you heard on stage with the two guys doing "percussive scat", as you called it. It is the verbal language of the drums. 🙂
