Zuko comforting Iroh at his son's funeral was one of my favorite moments
The fact that the 41st Division that was going to be sacrificed is actually Zuko's crew on his boat actually hit me so hard when I first watched this.
Like that's such a good plot point, makes me emotional to think he saved their lives because we never found out what happened to that division. I always assumed they went through with it and they were killed.

Assuming Aang DID have the power to defeat the firebenders that attacked his home in the Avatar state, he wouldn't have been able to control it. Meaning, he probably would have killed a lot of the airbenders as well.
When Aang met up with Monk Gyotso in the spirit world, he reassured Aang that it was not his fault. He also went on to explain that there was nothing Aang could have done to stop it. Had he been there, he would have been killed too. Aang was just too young and untrained as an Avator. To effectively stop the fire nation he had to have mastered all the others elements first. The normal age for an Avator to be reveiled is 16, not 12.
I want to tell you that your reaction was very pleasant to watch.
I have seen the animated show it is based on and had an inkling that some of the disappointment I felt with the live action was solely because of my knowledge from the original. Seeing you both enjoy it proved to me that this show is actually quite good.
It allowed me to see things from a different angle and even if not perfect, I could appreciate some changes they made.
(That being said, I highly recommend you to watch the original as many might have already said)

In regards to where did Kyoshi get the water from when she was fighting the Fire Nation soldiers: there is water everywhere.
There is water in the air we breathe, water in the soil and plants, and water in our bodies.
This is also addressed in the animated series, that we have to understand that the elements are everywhere. And also Kyoshi is a terrifying, merciless, and fierce warrior. She can definitely pull water from the air itself.

i know a lot of people are saying it would've been better to watch the cartoon first, but i actually like seeing reactions to the netflix series from those who haven't watched the original because you're more "blank slates" in a sense; the story is new to you so your perspectives will be different from those of us who have something to compare it to. that being said, i do highly recommend watching the cartoon to anyone interested in the netflix show, it's nice to watch both and compare/contrast but watch them in whatever order you want.
One thing this show highlights that is left implied in the animation is that zuko being sent to find the avatar really was a joke from Ozai. That’s like in real life telling your kid he can’t come home till he finds Jesus and he took it literally.
they made the avatar series their own, especially episode 2 where i started to cry due to kiyoshi bringing hope (i won't spoil it why). If i were someone who didn't watch avatar until now, this series would blow me away! We go to know the characters more in depth just like disney did for Ariel and the prince.
Bro Ozai vs Zuko was amazing and can’t wait to see his full potential against Aang later on

Finally a masterpiece has been launched, from the initial episode until the last I am speechless. This is a reflection of the actual animation, although there are some scenes that are not suitable but well enhanced🎉🎉
It’s not a coincidence that the ppl who enjoy it the most are the ones who didn’t see the original. A lot of ppl are turning away from it bc it’s different than the original and not going in with an open mind

i think that Netflix did many things better than the cartoon. I mean, the moment of Zuko and Iroh when Lu Ten dies, or Zuko and Aang discussing they are amazing. They managed to put one season into 8 episodes and it worked.

I genuinely love the live action adaptation of this series, yeah I have some mixed feelings, but I really enjoyed re-experiencing the retold story of Avatar and I hope they do the other two seasons

Aang become an airbender master at the age of 10. Normally, who ever is the Avator, is not told until they are 16 when they have enough maturity to handle it . Monk Gyatso wanted Aang to have a normal childhood and have more maturity before being told and argued against it. They told Aang at the age of 12 due to what was going on with the fire nation.
This is actually a really cool perspective givin you guys are the same age as me and everyone else who grew up the original. So if you really never watched i will say it is an incredibly deep and philosophical story in an incredibly complex world and it is incredible. But this is VERY IMPORTANT to note...this is an INCREDIBLE asaptation, even tho there are some things that change, and even some somewhat big things, but the changes that were made were small, fit the plot, and maintained the significance to the original story. The creators and cast for this clearly have a deep respect for the original work, and are doing an amazing job

Yes certain animals can naturally bend and skybisons were actually the first airbenders.
What other animals were the first benders? I know one of them were the first firebenders (I'm keeping it vague to avoid potential spoilers)

Aang has no control over the Avator state. He won't gain control until after mastering the other elements first. That won't happen until much later. In Episode 8, the Ocean spirit took over Aang and that is what triggered the Avator state. Aang was not in control. The Ocean spirit was channeling it's rage through Aang. Had not Yue revived the moon Spirit by giving back the life she received, Aang would have been trapped within the rage of the Ocean spirit and it would have rampage until the world was destoyed.
lmty, watching the netflix series with the emotions and experiences I’ve gained from the animated series, I’ve cried at least 5-10 times when I binged the series.
And that was mostly due to seeing my childhood come to life :,)
I would still re-watch the original animation over remakes any day, but I’m so happy to see a worthy remake opponent especially considering they had to rush through the episodes for the sake of a netflix series.

Regarding how the Fire Nation & Azula sieged Omashu
Remember not everyone in the Fire Nation is a fire bender, and not everyone in the Earth Kingdoms are earthbenders.
Along with that, the Fire Nation is a military government, so almost everyone is taught to fight and that’s not the case with the Earth Kingdom (and other elemental groups).
Also Azula is ruthless, so if anyone can capture kingdoms single-handedly without any army, it’s her.

I think it is still worth watching the animated version.
Long story short this was to to short cheapening several moments and making them hit less hard.
By no means a bad adaptation; This is a great way to enter the Avatar fandom.
Watched all 8 Episodes today. My score for the series is a 9/10 across the board. Definitely recommend, will be showing and watching with my 8yr old daughter over the weekend.
1) They show the air nomad deaths, so to adults, watch first 20 minutes before kids. Otherwise kids can watch once Aang is in ice.
2) This is not a copy of the original. 8 Live action episodes to tell story of 20 cartoon episodes. Episode 6 of original looks like it will be in season 2. Season 2 episode 2 of original is added into season 1.
3) The first episode is the first 3 episodes together with the deaths of the air nomads.
4) Original cartoon Episodes 4, 5, 7-10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 have their essential episode essence represented, in episodes 2 through 6 of the live action. A lot of things are re-ordered. Some things are expanded You will see parts of things from a recognizable episode mashed with events from other episodes.
5) Watch the entire thing before judging. Sometimes you will think something was forgotten only to learn, that the other parts or viewpoints of a given episode are in a follow-up episode. The way the episodes are mashed together means the story jumps between events of various episodes, so the representation of one episode might occur across 2 or 3 episodes; or there may be an intervening episode.
6) Do Not PreJudge. The format is different than the original cartoon, initially the order will seem odd. Just hang in with it, overall it does work.
7) Episodes 11, and 14 are not shown, but pay attention anytime Zuko, Iroh, or Zhou get a report. The events of those episodes are mentioned but it’s a one time blink, or talk and you will miss it. These episodes have indirect representation in the series. The honorable mentions in the reports made me laugh while watching.
8) The Jeong Jeong part of Episode 16 might occur in season 2, or 3 without Zhou. Jeong Jeong is not in season 1 of this live action.
9) The last 2 episodes of the Netflix Live action have been mashed together and reorder the events of original cartoon episodes 18-20. The Katara vs Paku fight is Wow!
10) Koh will appear far earlier than expected. and not when or how fans expect. He is still a creepy, freaky, and dangerous spirit. They expand Koh’s role to include some of the lore with him from the comics as well. He is voiced by George Takei (Sulu from 1966 Star Trek).
11) The original voice actor of the cabbage man, plays and is the cabbage man in this Netflix live Action series!!
12) The previous 3 avatars and ocean spirit La, at points will be given permission by Aang to use him as a channel. Kyoshi is obvious. Many people apparently missed when Roku did so. Pay attention, do not miss it by talking or by being distracted by what Roku is showing and teaching Aang. Kurik will refuse. La’s turn is OBVIOUS.
13) Azula’s machinations are definitely as evil as Ozai’s. Yes Azula learns lightning bending before the end of season 1. She is far darker than the original cartoon.

The series is amazing on every level I can't think of anything wrong with it apart from the lower grade animation the first season that got better as it gained popularity, hope to watch u guys go through that journey maybe with a hot cup of Jasmine tea, ull need something comforting after some of those epiosdes

I've only watched the first couple episodes so far but I thought it was pretty decent. Though I definitely recommend you guys watch the original Avatar The Last Airbender and later Avatar The Legend of Korra.
They watched the first 2 episodes of the animated version in a reaction video from 3 years ago.
just so you know later on others learn to bend up to 3 diffrent elements some of the bending even includes advants form of a element like lava for fire metal for earth or blood for water
mastering all 3 is very hard there baearly be able to master 2
ep 2 :kyoshi warriors can not bend there more hand to hand but it don't mean there can not block a benders energy as Tylee has been shown to do by hitting points on the body.

Love ATLA without the credits the original is like 21 minutes long and since the live is like an hour long it's reasonable to have book one in the time frame.
I saw an episode or two when it came out, but I was done with cartoons at 12. So I never watched it. But I knew about it from others talking about it. I loved this live action, more than One Piece. The hate it gets is hilarious. People forget it's an adaptation and not meant to be a shot for a shot show. It also give others an actual interest or reason to watching the original cartoon
