  • The Toyota GR86 is the best drivers car on sale that you can't actually buy ! The Toyota GT86 had a reputation as a great drivers car. The GR86 has more power and importantly more torque from a larger 4 cylinder boxer engine. All going through a 6 speed manual gearbox and rear wheel drive.
A week with the car turned out to be a huge amount of fun. With European regulations changing in 2024 this car is on limited time. Only 430 units are coming to the UK and they sold out in just 90 minutes !

I ordered the then new GT86 in 2012 and had to wait 6 months for it. I spent that time on forums discussing this new model and Toyota gave me access to their site where I could follow when it actually went on the assembly line and finally when it was put on the ship for Australia. I could follow the ship online and see when it birthed in Brisbane and subsequently transported to my home town. This made the wait very exciting. I now have 150,000 kms on it after 10 years and have had many exciting adventures and still enjoy the drive.

Great review Pete and everything you commented on is exactly true . I actually just purchased one here in Australia a week ago , after originally going into an adjoining Honda dealership to test drive an FL5 CTR . After meandering through The Toyota forecourt, I spotted a little red GT spec GR86. Cloths seats,17 inch wheels and a little less safety tech , I was tempted into a quick test drive. 20 minutes later I was trading my 2019 FK8 CTR , signing paperwork like a wildman and driving home in one of the best drivers cars on sale ( previous Honda included) with an awesome sports car and $15,000 in my bank account to boot. Win win I’d say.😁

    Hi Ped
Just got round to this video, another great watch. Took me back to the 70’s when I bought a new Celica ST. From memory big on understeer, did not inspire confidence, and when the back end finally let go it resulted in an uncontrollable 180 to 369. Build quality not bad, but dealer not up to the mark, taking over 3 months to sort intermittent fuel starvation problems. Chopped it in for Fiat 124 Coupe, fabulous twin cam engine, handling for a 2+2 fantastic. Such a shame that Toyota have taken so long to produce a “drivers” car that will be denied to so many.😥

Had mines for over a year now (8.4K miles) and I ring it out at every U-turn. It’s my first manual and I feel like a pro driving this thing. Most smiles per dollar. And yeah, the primacy’s in the rain will slip if you even think of pressing the pedal too hard. I’m thinking of getting a Pedal commander to adjust the throttle response and linearity cuz it’s too sensitive on touch but kinda lazy when you really gas it. I’m going to get some Continental Extreme Contact or P4S when I buy some rims, for now I’ll enjoy sliding like mad.

There would be a massive market for this type of “drivers” car (hate that phrase by the way!) but they all seem to be obsessed with EV’s and touchscreens and too many driver aids and then the car ends up weighing almost as much as a house!!! When Subaru went looking for engines to license, only VWG would license the boxer engine from the VW, which was crap. Over the next 30 years Subaru made a lot of changes Toyota partnered with them because Toyota was trying to build a modern AE86 GT-S, and the boxer offered a lower center of gravity for drifting. No one else can license the low slung boxer engine, so no one else can copy the low center of gravity, which keeps it very stable while very nimble. Underpowered, but magnificently balanced.

@@sandersson2813I think you’re looking at it the wrong way. Driver’s car just means it’s driver-focused first, while the comforts and appliance nature of cars is second. Toyota are more often than not appliances, they’re kinda boring (if you exclude stuff from the 90s and early 2Ks). This car doesn’t have great NVH (noise/vibration/harshness). It’s definitely a driver’s car because comfort and tech isn’t why you buy this, or for it to be a commuter car (it’s not bad, but a mustang is miles better in comfort). The driver has nothing to do with it.

    Hi
I am from Canada and I’m one of the very fortunate one to have the privilege of owning one of these rare cars: GR86 MT 6 speed in silver. A real head turner!!! I receive thumbs up on the road all the time…even from people with much costlier/sportier cars…
My GR86 is suuuuch a blast to drive that I find excuses to hit the road even for silly reasons. Really by far the most fun car I’ve ever owned as it is so visceral and it makes you feel real connected to the road (and I had Golf GTI, Civic SI, BMW M2 among others).
Not perfect, a bit noisy, could use 25-50 more bhp but Ô boy is it a treat on twisty roads.
Anyway, future collectors car. Prices are already starting to significantly increase on the used market.
A real gem (beautiful, fun, reliable) and a keeper.

@Tone We have plenty of twisties in the back country and mountains area around here. And wanting more power or not is entirely a subjective and personal thing. I would like more power to get slightly better acceleration. I don’t want to turn this car into a dragster (which it was not meant to be and will never become anyway) but a slight bump of 25-50 bhp in power would be welcome. It is 100% my POV as a GR86 owner. And, interestingly the vast majority of GR86’ owners tend to agree as per forums.
That should lower the 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in the 5 sec ballpark or very close to it i.e. lower 5 sec…

Only 430, if Porsche had a 430 run made of a light weight 911, it would be flipped at twice the RRP, don’t hesitate if you missed the 90 minute slot, Electric blue is stunning if you get a chance, they are £31k RRP in manual, so what’s £5k, they won’t lose value, you could always buy a mass produced hot hatch for £36k, let’s see what’s left of your spend in 5 years time, 50% if your lucky.

I went for a paddle shift auto in Ice Silver, which might seem strange for such a vehicle as a GR86. But, not only is it cheaper insurance but it has a really good gearbox, better than the manual that was reviewed on another channel (the guy went from front to back and had it on a ramp too). It was all to do with the 4th gear, which has a different and far better synchromesh than the other forward gears. I am a driver who notices everything when driving and the change in gear would have cheesed me off. On top of that, I had a Porsche Cayman that had a DRK gearbox and a paddle shift; it was exhilarating and so sweet. My Grrrr86, already named Gabriella after my late partner, will be just as enjoyable

Evening Peter, just wanted to pretty much echo everything you've said about this car, I have owned a GT86 Areo for the past 5 odd years and puts a smile on my face every day I'm in it.
Sure it's not the fastest thing on 4 wheels and maybe the interior lacks some of the modern day creature comforts of modern day cars, but it screams JAP!!! and maybe that's not for everyone, but for smiles per mile it takes some beating.
    Merry Christmas all.

Picked up my new GTS GR86 after waiting about 8 months here in Australia. My one complaint is that unlike my 2017 86 my new GR 86 doesn’t have satellite navigation. Apple car play was long overdue but the only maps you have is those maps on your phone. This means whenever I am out of mobile phone range, which is very regular where I live, I don’t have any sat navigation ability. I bought this car for long drives in the rural countryside in Victoria exploring coffee shops and winery’s and generally enjoying life. So after spending over $50k on my new car I need to shop for an aftermarket sat nav. Such a shame Toyota. Apparently the BRZ does have sat nav as does my sones 11 year old Suzuki swift sport. Such a cheap and basic feature left off the Toyota requirement list.

I love sports car with a quirk such as the naturally aspirated Boxster engine coupled onto a manual tranny, giving it more power is the icing on the cake. This is a back to basic sports car how it used to be done in the golden years of sports cars of the 1990s to 2010ish before computers aided driving took over the driving of vehicles. Nice car front and back!

Tried to order one and failed. Already there are 3 on autotrader for 35K which are still tempting. But as a daily having done the GR Yaris thing think the new BMW 2 series coupe in either 230i or 220d although more expensive would make more sense as the GR86 is a weekend toy. Glad they made it though.

Sad state of affairs that Toyota aren't willing to develop a next gen 86. You'd think they could easily throw a couple of grand (£10K) on the asking price on the next gen car to cover the added cost of developement? Oh well.
I imagine in 3 years time, when these cars are available on the used market, these cars have fantastic residual value.

I have never driven a rear wheel car and I have owned over twenty cars and driven at least twenty others but always front or four wheel drive. I think I would need a track day to learn a new skill but to own a car that you know where the limit is and can take it just a little over is one of the greatest joys of a Petrol head in my opinion. It is funny that sometimes the car that gives the most fun is not the most expensive or most powerful but is just "sorted". That being said that looked a lot of fun but it would be the Yaris for me.
