Several things....#1. ME, I can be the biggest distraction to the school day, now that my last child is doing more independent work.I have to keep myself quiet & on task. I also have to be firm with myself & not get caught up visiting - inner discipline is a tough thing in this type of life. Especially when you also REALLY value people & want to keep the peace. And my MOTHER. She will stop by at random times in the a.m. KNOWING we are doing school. Often she is using my house as a way station & its hard to deal with this. If I let her stay, or use my facilities it interrupts the day, my daughter slinks off never to return to focus. If I try to wrap it up & move her along, she will act put out & the silent "treatment" can go on & on. And unexpected company. YIKES! In the spring-fall our house can feel like grand central station as it is a farm & we have folks coming & going doing work, partnering with us, etc...Most people understand if I just tell them, "Nope, its school hours. I can't visit today." But it is hard when it is ME who wants to talk. I have never had seasoned teachers be 'cheerleaders' for homeschooling where I live. So consider yourself very lucky. There are often very rude & condescending remarks about how homeschoolers are just parents who can't 'let go' or the district just needs to find a way to 'make them come back to public school, because they are losing $ for our kids', or that 'there is no way parents know what they are doing'. So I ignore all of this. My kids went to public school. I KNOW what its all about. In NY, they spend $14,000 avg a year on students & many of them are not proficient in reading or math. and if my kids are not in their buildings the district doesn't get state aid. I NEVER feel guilty. I offer my kids all sorts of opportunities in a safe & loving environment. My kids have not missed out on anything & say they never want to go back to school. The best way to realize that you are doing a great job is to tutor some public schoolers, look at the standardized test results, and look at the reading material @ grade level. I tutored during covid (incorporating some kids into our homeschool days for several months). The things they did NOT know at their grade level & their lack of enthusiasm for learning was mind boggling. One teacher only required reading for 10 minutes - a DAY! This was for an upper middle schooler. The high schoolers could not tell me basic vocab definitions, didn't know when the Civil War, Great Depression, or WWI occurred (even tho the one assured me that they had just finished learning about WWI & didn't need to sit thru our lesson). these kids quickly admitted that our 'schooling' was way harder for them & had no interest in continuing it. LOL. They had previously thought that what we did was some easy-peasy lounge around in our pjs type work. I look at the reading material for high schoolers & it is NOTHING that I would ever want my kid reading, or discussing with another adult & kids of the other gender. I never feel guilty, I feel vindicated & confident. Just graduated one & she aced cosmetology school, with the teacher telling her she was the most prepared independent learner she had had in a while. She did 4 hours of school every night while working 40 hours a week.
Maybe she would be willing to read to the children when she stops by? Or ask if she can drop in at lunch or after? I bet she would love to help you if you ask
Thank you so much for coming here to comment! Comments help my videos so much! Please remember to keep comments kind and respectful. Although all comments and interaction help my video, disparaging and disrespectful comments are not approved in order to keep this a safe, positive place.
You are totally calling me out on “promptly” starting homeschool or the whole day is derailed 😂 Also, your willpower not to get the chicks is astounding haha thanks so much for collabing! It’s awesome that I’ve watched you so long and got to connect with you in such an awesome and fun way!
Awe, Tabitha! What works for us there is just what works best for us, since I and some of the kids have ADHD we are like farts in a whirlwind if we don't have structure, lol! You have found your groove too though, and are thriving! That's what it's all about! You are amazing!
I totally agree with what you said at 5:00 about how watching other mothers can recharge your battery! I often come to your channel for encouragement and a recharge. It's so valuable when it's from a more experienced mother, like Paul said in Timothy (maybe?) about how older women should raise up and mentor the younger women. Your channel really does shine a light into people's hearts
I grew up without a mom (she passed when I was 10), so I thank God when he shows me generous and lovely people like you, those who share wisdom and love. I learn so much spiritually and emotionally from you. This video was especially touching. 💕 Thank you, thank you for ministering to me, and others. May God bless you and your family. 🕊️
Oh my goodness you are like hanging out with my best friend. ❤ Thank you for being a light. Such a blessing to this momma while washing late night dishes.
I so enjoy your videos. First I listen while getting things done around the house, then I watch them on the TV in segments and it’s like a whole new video to me to watch and read the subtitles! Thank you for sharing this and putting so much valuable content out there…you are a blessing and an encouragement! God bless you and your family. ❤
I always find all your content very encouraging, and I loved this particular episode, it was realistic whilst also being very uplifting, so thank you ❤❤
It varies greatly because we discuss rewards meaningful to the individual child. Sometimes it's a small pack of legos, sometimes a sweet treat. If they did a really good job the reward might be even more special.
Ha ha I started crying when you got to eyelashes...❤what a beautiful perspective on your children. Also your chicken story was a great example to me of just not living in fear. I get this thing in my head "I have to do..." or "if I don't do...." and that doesn't lend itself well to taking care of my own. Thank you for this video!
You are the sweetest momma! I can see your love for your children! Thank you so much for sharing these great reminders. I really appreciate your channel and I think you are doing a wonderful job!
I love how you keep it real in this video! I homeschool my 4 kids under age 11 (and i have 2 kids in their 20s). I let them choose their outfits for the day, too. Lol sometimes one kid is wearing a superhero costume 🦸🏽♀️ and sometimes one kid is wearing mix match clothes. 🤭😂 They're all clean, well taken care of, and happy! 🥰💜🙏🏽
The discipline with schooling is something that I struggle with. With my own health and several kids with special needs I tend to shorted a lot. I always look back and know that if I would do better with planning more. I find it hard to plan the way I want to. I stand in my own way with this! It is my job and I would take the time if I were out of the home. This is something that I see in myself and know I have to work really hard to protect that planning time. Thanks for talking about it and sharing your own struggles. Wondering how long of a break do you take for lunch? Is it predicable? I have thought about setting a timer for hour and that would making lunch, eating, and cleaning up. Our lunch time isn't predictable and I know it would really help.
Hello Alesha! So I didn't share it in this video, I did in last years, but we use an Alexa for reminders! Since we've been doing this awhile the kids are used to the routine, however it took awhile. It probably took 6 months or more! Every time we get off the normal schedule it takes a bit of effort to get back on too. I've spoken with teachers about this, and they have noticed the same thing as I, it seems to take almost as long as the break was to get the kids back into and used to the routine sometimes. If the routine remains the same with very little changes though it's easier to get back into. I put a lot of thought and prayer into our routines, and they consistently do need adjustments especially with the seasons, so there's a degree of flexibility, but having checklists helps very much, especially if there is an adjustment. Finding a good routine for the family though is a POWERHOUSE! It's amazing what can be accomplished, especially in school, once the routine is down! Yes, lunch is pretty predictable, almost always at noon. The kids may need to be reminded to start their school, chores etc....but snack and lunch time, lol? Nope, they are on the ball with those times, hehe! The Alexa makes an announcement to start lunch at 11:40 so that helps to keep it structured. Before Alexa, I used my phone. It wasn't as effective but it helped some. I'm sure you are doing better than you realize though, Alesha. And God has a way of filling in for our weakness too, especially when we have answered His callings.
I'm from Tabitha's channel. I love her and have followed her for years now. I loved this video. I wish I had known a lot of these things when I was young with my kids at home. I'm going to go watch some of your older videos. Ty for sharing. This was so encouraging. Ty for sharing Jesus.
I just wanted to say that your videos are so very encouraging. I appreciated your word at the end about waiting…and not feeling abandoned by the Lord. It can be so hard to wait, but if we embrace the season that we’re in, it can bring a lot of growth, too. Thriving, not just surviving. That’s been a theme for me this year. Also, I love that you don’t show your children’s faces. 💛
You are speaking to me and my situation right now. As a homeschool mom, it drives me insane when people who know that we homeschool, call during school and expect to have long conversations that aren't really important, mostly small talk. I have been praying a lot lately and God has really placed Proverbs 31 and Titus 2 on my heart recently. The fact that it keeps popping up everywhere feels like confirmation. I totally get a house being under construction and trying to keep the house clean with kids and construction. I keep reminding myself, our needs are met and this too shall pass. I am needed by my younger children and there will always be messes somewhere. One day, I will look back and long for the noise and messes when our house is empty. We also gather the whole family together for science projects. I love that my older ones can help teach the younger ones. A lot of times, they will ask siblings for help and when I offer, they say I've got this mom.
Hello, thank you for your comment! I didn't share it here, but one thing I did to cure the people that wouldn't stop calling during school hours is I put an auto responder on my phone to take calls. It told people school was in session, and that I'd get back to them after school. It also gave the times they could call back that I wouldn't be doing lessons. It worked!
I love this video! Wish I could have had your wisdom when I was homeschooling my boys. Those years are a blur in my memory now. But that's why God gives us grandbabies! I'm slowing down and enjoying every moment with my grandson ❤️
Awe, thank you for telling me! One of the reasons I started my channel and blog was because I saw a lack of people sharing practical solutions to the problems we all face in this journey. What you said about it all being a blur.....that is what happens once we are out of a phase of life, and I saw a need for people in the phases, actively sharing solutions and encouragement. Thank you for sharing this, Nancy!
love the new library/music room/living room set ups! so glad for you! thanks for sharing how you do your family life. neat to watch. all Gods best blessings to you and the family. ps. great story with waiting for the chickens instead of rushing off to pick them up, love the real life stories they're so helpful
What online subjects besides math do your older kids use? House work is a big distraction for me. A REALLY big distraction. lol at tacos aren’t a snack!!! That sounds like something my youngest would ask for at snack time… or breakfast! He’ll eat left over supper for breakfast sometimes 😂 He’s a growing boy 🤷🏻♀️ 💚
Hello! One of my high schoolers is doing online Gov & Civics, Art History, English, and World History. Some of my younger children supplement with Night Zookeeper.
I love all your videos, Shayla, but your homeschool vlogs are my personal favorite!! I loved this so much! Your wisdom on how you spend quality time with each kid was such a great reminder when the days are long. We use a lot of the same curriculums as you do, and I just feel like we have a lot in common. 😊 Love your library room too! We just painted our living room a dark green and love it!
I'm loving your channel❤ I'm in New Zealand and my son is 12 he's been continually stood down at school due to his behaviour, he has adhd and mild asd/sensory struggles. We just faced the school board which was horrible. I'm considering home school as dealing with the school is very stressful for us all, but I'm so scared of failing him and not being able to help him learn, he's not up to level for his age and has a very short attention span and gets angry when he doesn't understand, do you have any advice, I have been praying but I don't know what to do😒
Love your channel I came over from This mama's house i have been watching her for a while I just truly Love watching inspiring videos and people and i have found other channel i will continue to watch.
Love your channel ❤️ I'm a soon to be young wife and we are moving off grid on his parents land. Im excited and nervous to start homesteading and I also hope to homeschool when that time comes for me so I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep it up! Much love from Texas
Thank you soo much for this video and all the effort you put in to your content, I am also a second generation homeschooling mama who is homesteading as well….although my baby is only in the preschool years, I still need this wisdom and input from a mama who’s farther along in this journey….thank you for being a great role model and Titus 2/Proverbs 31 Woman…I appreciate YOU, Shayla. Also, so exciting your son is so ambitious in getting a jumpstart on high school! I was the same way and it paid off big time for me 😊
Shayla, Looking for some advice from a seasoned, Christian, Homeschooling mama of many. Ive been Homeschooling on and off since 2012. I am currently pregnant with our 7th child. At the moment I have two high-schoolers homeschooling strickly via online school, one grade 8 middle-schooler in their second year at public school, two elementary home-schoolers I am teaching full time, and a toddler running around. My question for you is, do you ever receive feedback from your husband that the home homeschool environment is too tense and that with toddlers and babies on the way, things will only get harder, so maybe public school should be considered, even though we both feel very compationatly about the benefits of homeschooling? The tense environment he is talking about is the children giving mom kickback about completeling certain assignments or subjects, as well as the toddler getting restless when im preoccupied with teaching and they are no longer interested in the different activities I have in place for them. I was under the impression that this is a normal homeschool environment vibe that comes with schooling large familes. Am I missing something here? Is this normal, or is this a sign that an adjustment needs to be made as its not fair or healthy for the children? I feel torn and conflicted on the matter, like I'm somehow failing or not capable of providing the environment they need and or deserve. Any feedback and or advice would be much appreciated. ♡
Mama, you’re making a wise choice! Me not too long ago, I would have rushed to get them, putting off all things… and our world would have been in turmoil for making a decision in haste. The Lord is good and faithful, and His slow and steady way is so right!!! ❤❤❤❤
Your videos are always so beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, inspirational and just a little piece of wonderful to look at in such a crazy world. Thank you for sharing your wisdom in being a wife, mother, home maker, homesteader and woman of God. You set such a wonderful example for us women. God bless you and you family. Thanks for sharing good wholesome content. And nevermind the naysayers.
(This is JusticePirate with a new username) Wow so much snow! It is good that you have chores for your kids to do things. I liked seeing the supplements you take. So many!!! Ahh. I enjoyed seeing your kids doing their schoolwork. I wish that I homeschooled my two oldest for high school rather than deciding to put them into public school for high school :: sigh :: but they like going and we have lots of conversations about what they are learning. Why would we judge you about the clothes your kids wear? If they were filled with holes and dirt, we might question it. They seem fine. I am glad you are someone who goes to therapy and is not afraid to share that you go. That is really cool. candy rewards Mmm!! "I don't know what you mean." Kids don't understand that saying and writing helps them learn things better. Hopefully in time your son will understand. I used so many of the books shown or mentioned in this video for when I homeschooled my kids. I can't wait to start again in a few years. I feel a lot of homeschooliing moms teach way more thoroughly than a lot of professional teachers, honestly. It is nice you go to some teachers to see about that. I think for myself, it helps that I retained all the things I learned in school with my photographic memory. The room your husband was painting, personally, I would make it a lighter color because there is not a lot of window light in that room, so it will open the room better to keep it light, while rooms that have lots of light can work with darker colors. Just something I have learned from one of my friends who is a designer. I had that same green color in my bedroom for a few years (now it is white with green accents). I love that green! Unfolded clothes gives me stress just looking at it. Ahh! I hope things work out with your chickens and meat birds. Have a great rest of your week!
I’ve been watching your channel for a while now and had no idea about your herbology degree! Do you think you would ever consider a workshop teaching? My kids and I would love to learn 😁
Hello Elizabeth! Thank you for being here! Here is the review of the math program and where you can learn more about it, ua-cam.com/video/I4kGbO68qEY/v-deo.html
So do they have to take tests with you or do you have to take them somewhere to do that? Also, do you get to give them their diploma or do they have to go somewhere to test out?
6:19 I would prefer having human beings working alongside me to machines. The sense of companionship and shared labor is far more valuable and lightens the load for me than a cold, definitely indifferent and often dysfunctional hunk of plastic like a vacuum. That’s probably just me though. I don’t mind hard work, I just mind doing it alone.
Today is a COLLABORATION withTabitha over at This Mama's House! ua-cam.com/video/ootX5AvZyKM/v-deo.html

Hello Crystal! Thank you for coming over and for the kind words! God Bless you too!
I just love love all the homeschool videos you do ❤
Hello Friend! Thank you for letting me know!
I was the same way and it paid off big time for me 😊
Thank you so much ☺
Shayla,
Looking for some advice from a seasoned, Christian, Homeschooling mama of many.
Yes, I agree about the pre readers....it's so true! And the high school part.
Thank you so much for this encouragement! Blessings to you.
@@mountainmamashomeyes ma’am. Absolutely 🌻

Yes you can!
Love the sunflower and bees kitchen towel, where did you get them?
It was a gift, I don't have a resource, I'm sorry!
Hola q bello video saludos desde uruguay 🇺🇾 ❤
I found your channel through Tabitha
Welcome!! Thank you for coming over!!
New subscriber, over from Tabitha’s channel! What is the math program you use for your children? I didn’t see it in the description.

Thank you for being here!!
So do they have to take tests with you or do you have to take them somewhere to do that? Also, do you get to give them their diploma or do they have to go somewhere to test out?
This depends on the state one lives in, each state has it's own rules and regulations. :-)
Thank you for sharing your opinions! 🙂
I was wondering what online math program your kids do? Thanks!
I'm hoping she shares this too! I didn't see it in the description but feel my kids would enjoy it!
Oh goodness I said I would share it in the description and forgot! Here it is! ua-cam.com/video/I4kGbO68qEY/v-deo.html
