Star Wars The acolyte trailer dropped last week. It takes place 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. What were the crews thoughts? How was the tone? The news dropped that the episodes will be 30 minute episodes. Why? Why does Lucasfilm keep doing this with Star Wars? They have an opportunity to build out the lore through character and story and are choosing to do 30 minute episodes? Why the choice? Is it a Disney move? Harloff, the Russian Doll episodes lasted between 24 and 30 minutes, this is not Filoni's mandate, I know you are afraid of what he does, but not every mistake or decision is his fault. Having said that, I understand your doubts, but the point is not that a good story cannot be told in that time, of course, it is more difficult but she did it. The problem is that you don't trust Lucasfilm to be able to do it, which is understandable, animation aside, they haven't been able to prove themselves capable of doing it until now.

Episode length doesn’t matter. Leslye Headlands show Russian Doll also had 30 minute episodes and she was able to tell a complex story.
I think the problem is when it's disney making 30 min shows. They just don't seem able to tell something complete within 30 minutes so everything is always feeling rushed or just badly paced.

Filoni's newest character Chuck Leafblower really seems intent on drowning out criticism
Roadhouse was a fun streamer. We watched it at home on Saturday morning. That last part of their fight was brutal! 😂 I wish Extraction came out in theaters way back when the first one came out, instead of streaming. That was fun as hell but now that we're in the 3rd installment, makes sense to keep it there.
They want more visits to their streaming service, so eight 30-min episodes increases traffic more than four 1-hour episodes, unfortunately. They figure after people watch Star Wars for 30 minutes they stay on Disney+ and look for something else to watch. I think it's a monetary decision instead of a creative one, and that's what is frustrating. I have the creepy feeling this is 2.5 hours of story stretched out to 4 hours and sliced up 8 ways. The inevitable fan-cut "movie" version will be better.
That's how I watched the obi wan show.
I'd rather have 8 1-hr episodes...more time for development. Attention spans have gotten way too ridiculous. 🫤

I think it's much more likely that this is a Leslye Headland call, seeing as Russian Doll also had 30 minute episodes. Showrunners tend to stick to the same timeframe. Not to mention that show had great pacing.

If it's around the same runtime as most other SW/MCU shows, most likely it's a Disney call than this particular showrunner.
Mandalorian season 1 had really short episodes and no one complained then. That was one of the best usage of screen time I've seen. No filler, everything fit into the time frame of each episode.
@@Mertaranta errrr lots of people have complained about the short runtime of The Mandalorian, and it particularly shows in the second and third seasons where we grew tired of very short eps, especially the few obvious filler eps (or the ones that weren’t technically filler but felt like it).

Homecoming on Amazon with Julia Roberts 🙌🙌 The way they go from like 4:3 to full screen, great usage for a reveal. Awesome show.
The runtime is a Filoni call, man Kristian really has gone off Dave totally at this point.

lol I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mike so excited in my life. For Mike’s sake please do a road house watch along lol. But I’m right there with him, the original was awesome. Haven’t seen the new one yet.
I feel like Carrie-Ann Moss is going to be 1 of 2 things, 1 she gets Drew Barrymore'd in episode 1 or 2 she's going to be the head Sith character.
I don't care about the runtime as long as the show flows. Ahsoka was a little longer and they just stood there with their arms folded looking wistfully into the distance half the episode.
Russian Doll episodes were 30 minutes, not an hour.
There is one remedy for these short episodes. Binge-watching

I'm with Mike on the godzilla movies and discussion! I care about the franchise and really liked the introduction and tease of new titans from the King of the Monsters film. I was hoping the tease of Destroyah would come to fruition in a future film as a big bad. Monarch (the apple series) was really cool and fun and added some cool lore that made you care about the world in a new way. Wasnt a big fan of godzilla v kong. Would prefer things to get back to connecting and syncing up based on the tones of godzilla 2014, king of the monsters and Monarch the series personally.
I’m not terribly hyped or bummed about The Acolyte, but I am a little cautious. Despite it being a hundred years before TPM, it feels like it’s yet another “fall/failure of the Jedi” story.
And it’s 100 years prior, but I don’t know that it’s going to look or feel that much differently to prequel era?
Again, I don’t want to get too wound up before I’ve even seen the show.
tbh the 30 minute runtime thing isn't inherently bad. Ultimately it depends on the writing. I mean, the whole series will still be longer than a movie, and if a movie can introduce a group of characters and give you a good story in the limited time that it has, then this show should have enough time to do it too. It just depends on whether or not the writers use their time well...
Ive just decided im going to watch the two episode premiere so i can see what its about, and then binge the rest a few weeks later. These short episode shows flow better to just binge.
Is it just me- but The Acolyte seems like cosplayers ...... It just felt not lived in. Then again it's barely a trailer lol more like a teaser that shows nothing... but I completely agree it just feels like Episode 1 vibes.
I gave up on Star Wars shows for a few reasons, short episodes being one of them. Currently watching Walking Dead Ones Who Live with long episodes where a lot happens in each. It’s REAL storytelling the material deserves. (And it’s amazing)
I simply can’t do Disney+ content man. They short change it.
Russian Doll episodes were 30 minutes and sometimes less, clearly Leslye Headland is used to working with those episode lengths
I just wish the Acolyte was True Detective in the SW universe. Imagine the tone of Season 1 of TD but with Jedi instead of cops.

I don't think the 30-minute run time is a Dave Filoni thing. It's a children's TV shows thing, kids shows are 30 minutes, and at the end of the day, Star Wars is for kids.
Between Star Wars and MCU tv shows, I’m checked out and they need to win me back and the acolyte trailer didn’t do enough to win me back. I’ll probably wait for the reviews on the first two episodes. Im so much more excited for house of the dragon and the penguin

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire only had a $100M budget ,i thought it looked effects heavy so i was shocked see to the actual budget n the movie was written by the director Gil Kanon with Jason Reitman, Kanon also wrote Afterlife
Maybe because they had minimal sets, and it showed. Like, most scenes were set in rooms without many crowds or other people around.
@@alexp601 I didn't really notice til after watching it n on Campea's show they said even though the movie takes place in NY,it still felt small. Overall I still liked it hopefully they'll make enough for a third film

The Spider-Verse Short Film is absolutely timeless + adds to the Lure those Creators have established w/the 1st two movies (and why everyone's hungry for the 3rd) 🤌🏾
I think it's Disney that tries to milk as many episodes it can... With a script and shooting schedule that's not much not longer than a movie.... Just one that doesn't need to be edited as much and cut down so much to meet a feature film running time.

I totally agree with Mike's take on the Godzilla series. How do y'all watch a movie series and not remember the plots and characters in the movies? If I'm watching something, i am fully tuned in and I will remember every detail for about 3-4 years, lol.
If they are not memorable, they disappear.

People who are crying about it “breaking canon” just cause Mundi said that in the phantom menace, what do yall think the PHANTOM menace was? The prequels is about how the hubris and arrogance of the Jedi were their downfall. The Sith had been planning since Bane in secret and not to mention Plagues as well. If they do it correctly, having sith doesn’t break canon at all.
Acolytes may have been shot practically but it still looks cheap. The one scene where the Jedis were facing the forest looked so strange, almost looked like it was shot in the Volume.
I’m almost certain that some stuff was still shot in the Volume which is probably why the Acolyte has the same tone and feel as every other Star Wars show.

I think the whole point of the acolyte is that in that era the Jedi were at the high of their power aka no one had the balls to challenge them and when they did the Jedi saw them as insignificant ; I think in this series it will feel like GOT from the point where no one’s safe and by the series/season end the sith will have some mass cover up which will lead to the Jedi feeling safe and eventually the sith playing the extremely long game which leads to palpatines rise
I'm on my own but I miss cable. All the streaming including price hikes adds up to one cable bill anyway. Everything on one and commercials for cooking and piss breaks not pausing. Still like commercials sorry

If The Acolyte is well written I have hope they can get all the character development they need put into half an hour. X-Men '97 has shown has much story you can fit into half an hour and still do the characters justice. It is a bummer they're so short though. We've waited four years for this show. EDIT: Lol typed this JUST before Mike brought up X-Men.
Also we saw practical Coursucant in Andor a BUNCH. They filmed in real locations around London
Hmmmm. I get that SW isn’t having a good moment and that the spice from Dune still has Kristian’s eyes with a blue haze, but Quinlan Vos’ name drop seems to be a big hint to this “Path” storyline that also has to do with Ventress’ appearance in TBB, and all this talk about the Ki Adi Mundi thing is exactly the same as when people where upset that suddenly mandalorians didn’t take off their helmets in the series. That was later explained, and I suppose this will as well.
To be fair, Lucasfilm is to blame for this whole stink in the air.

I hated the max color change but I like this disney+ news, I like the color, I like the hulu tab. The blue color was atrocious.
Matt Serra was correct when he went on his rant about Disney Star Wars last week. It’s just not working. And they’re clearly not paying attention to any of the criticisms the fans are giving them.

Don’t know why my comment was deleted. But it works for a lot of people. A lot of KIDS. My niece grew up with the sequels. Watched Clone Wars and Rebels because of Ahsoka.
Each generation acts like Star Wars is this sacred cow of storytelling and whatever comes after is lesser than what came before. It ain’t. It’s great but it’s arguably kept the same quality throughout.
Also, they did listen to the fans.
-Look at TRoS. It was literally just a placation to the worst criticisms of TLJ
-People didn’t like the treatment of Luke, now look what did with him in the MandoVerse.
-People wanted Filoni as head of creative. You got your wish.
-People didn’t want them rushing out movies. They’ve been cooking these movies for years now.

In a vacuum, episode length doesn't need to indicate anything. However, we've been down this road with Star Wars before. Even if the show is like Mando, a fun little adventure of the week with a broad overarching narrative, 30 minutes feels short. If you're actually trying to tell a story of a time that we've not seen before (dunno if it's covered in animated or books), 30 minutes is not enough. They will skip out on character development or world building and it will feel small, the characters will feel tissue paper thin. I would love to be proven wrong.
I wonder if these shows not having any kind of angle is what's hurting them. Mando is a western, Andor is a spy thriller. Hopefully Acolyte has something interesting going on.
30 minute episodes automatically means i won't be tuning in until the day before the final episode releases. I'll acth the first 4-5 eps after work the evening before and then I'll watch the final 3-4 the next evening.

Right now with Star Wars everything feels like a one off or a kids show, this feels like a one off series like boba or obi. Mando and ahsoka are the only thing that feels like a series but it’s been so dumbed down
It’s almost as if LF doesn’t actually care about Star Wars output and is just churning it out.
I might be done with star wars. I'm just not excited anymore. And since I watched dune, i get similar themes done way better.
